Abstract: The use of 3D computer-aided design (CAD) models
to support construction project planning has been increasing in the
previous year. 3D CAD models reveal more planning ideas by
visually showing the construction site environment in different stages
of the construction process. Using 3D CAD models together with
scheduling software to prepare construction plan can identify errors
in process sequence and spatial arrangement, which is vital to the
success of a construction project. A number of 4D (3D plus time)
CAD tools has been developed and utilized in different construction
projects due to the awareness of their importance. Virtual prototyping
extends the idea of 4D CAD by integrating more features for
simulating real construction process. Virtual prototyping originates
from the manufacturing industry where production of products such
as cars and airplanes are virtually simulated in computer before they
are built in the factory. Virtual prototyping integrates 3D CAD,
simulation engine, analysis tools (like structural analysis and
collision detection), and knowledgebase to streamline the whole
product design and production process. In this paper, we present the
application of a virtual prototyping software which has been used in
a few construction projects in Hong Kong to support construction
project planning. Specifically, the paper presents an implementation
of virtual prototyping in a residential building project in Hong Kong.
The applicability, difficulties and benefits of construction virtual
prototyping are examined based on this project.
Abstract: Internet Access Technologies (IAT) provide a means
through which Internet can be accessed. The choice of a suitable
Internet technology is increasingly becoming an important issue to
ISP clients. Currently, the choice of IAT is based on discretion and
intuition of the concerned managers and the reliance on ISPs. In this
paper we propose a model and designs algorithms that are used in the
Internet access technology specification. In the proposed model, three
ranking approaches are introduced; concurrent ranking, stepwise
ranking and weighted ranking. The model ranks the IAT based on
distance measures computed in ascending order while the global
ranking system assigns weights to each IAT according to the position
held in each ranking technique, determines the total weight of a
particular IAT and ranks them in descending order. The final output
is an objective ranking of IAT in descending order.
Abstract: This communication is intended to provide some issues for thought on the importance of implementation of Blended Learning in traditional universities, particularly in the Spanish university system. In this respect, we believe that virtual environments are likely to meet some of the needs raised by the Bologna agreement, trying to maintain the quality of teaching and at the same time taking advantage of the functionalities that virtual learning platforms offer. We are aware that an approach of learning from an open and constructivist nature in universities is a complex process that faces significant technological, administrative and human barriers. Therefore, in order to put plans in our universities, it is necessary to analyze the state of the art of some indicators relating to the use of ICT, with special attention to virtual teaching and learning, so that we can identify the main obstacles and design adaptive strategies for their full integration in the education system. Finally, we present major initiatives launched in the European and state framework for the effective implementation of new virtual environments in the area of higher education.
Abstract: The trend in the world of Information Technology
(IT) is getting increasingly large and difficult projects rather than
smaller and easier. However, the data on large-scale IT project
success rates provide cause for concern. This paper seeks to answer
why large-scale IT projects are different from and more difficult than
other typical engineering projects. Drawing on the industrial
experience, a compilation of the conditions that influence failure is
presented. With a view to improve success rates solutions are
suggested.
Abstract: Accurate demand forecasting is one of the most key
issues in inventory management of spare parts. The problem of
modeling future consumption becomes especially difficult for lumpy
patterns, which characterized by intervals in which there is no
demand and, periods with actual demand occurrences with large
variation in demand levels. However, many of the forecasting
methods may perform poorly when demand for an item is lumpy.
In this study based on the characteristic of lumpy demand patterns
of spare parts a hybrid forecasting approach has been developed,
which use a multi-layered perceptron neural network and a
traditional recursive method for forecasting future demands. In the
described approach the multi-layered perceptron are adapted to
forecast occurrences of non-zero demands, and then a conventional
recursive method is used to estimate the quantity of non-zero
demands. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed
approach, their forecasts were compared to those obtained by using
Syntetos & Boylan approximation, recently employed multi-layered
perceptron neural network, generalized regression neural network
and elman recurrent neural network in this area. The models were
applied to forecast future demand of spare parts of Arak
Petrochemical Company in Iran, using 30 types of real data sets. The
results indicate that the forecasts obtained by using our proposed
mode are superior to those obtained by using other methods.
Abstract: We present an Electronic Nose (ENose), which is
aimed at identifying the presence of one out of two gases, possibly
detecting the presence of a mixture of the two. Estimation of the
concentrations of the components is also performed for a volatile
organic compound (VOC) constituted by methanol and acetone, for
the ranges 40-400 and 22-220 ppm (parts-per-million), respectively.
Our system contains 8 sensors, 5 of them being gas sensors (of the
class TGS from FIGARO USA, INC., whose sensing element is a tin
dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor), the remaining being a temperature
sensor (LM35 from National Semiconductor Corporation), a
humidity sensor (HIH–3610 from Honeywell), and a pressure sensor
(XFAM from Fujikura Ltd.).
Our integrated hardware–software system uses some machine
learning principles and least square regression principle to identify at
first a new gas sample, or a mixture, and then to estimate the
concentrations. In particular we adopt a training model using the
Support Vector Machine (SVM) approach with linear kernel to teach
the system how discriminate among different gases. Then we apply
another training model using the least square regression, to predict
the concentrations.
The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed
multiclassification and regression scheme is effective in the
identification of the tested VOCs of methanol and acetone with
96.61% correctness. The concentration prediction is obtained with
0.979 and 0.964 correlation coefficient for the predicted versus real
concentrations of methanol and acetone, respectively.
Abstract: The demands of taller structures are becoming imperative almost everywhere in the world in addition to the challenges of material and labor cost, project time line etc. This paper conducted a study keeping in view the challenging nature of high-rise construction with no generic rules for deflection minimizations and frequency control. The effects of cyclonic wind and provision of outriggers on 28-storey, 42-storey and 57-storey are examined in this paper and certain conclusions are made which would pave way for researchers to conduct further study in this particular area of civil engineering. The results show that plan dimensions have vital impacts on structural heights. Increase of height while keeping the plan dimensions same, leads to the reduction in the lateral rigidity. To achieve required stiffness increase of bracings sizes as well as introduction of additional lateral resisting system such as belt truss and outriggers is required.

Abstract: The advent of modern technology shadows its impetus repercussions on successful Legacy systems making them obsolete with time. These systems have evolved the large organizations in major problems in terms of new business requirements, response time, financial depreciation and maintenance. Major difficulty is due to constant system evolution and incomplete, inconsistent and obsolete documents which a legacy system tends to have. The myriad dimensions of these systems can only be explored by incorporating reverse engineering, in this context, is the best method to extract useful artifacts and by exploring these artifacts for reengineering existing legacy systems to meet new requirements of organizations. A case study is conducted on six different type of software systems having source code in different programming languages using the architectural recovery framework.
Abstract: Later marine propeller is the main component of ship
propulsion system. For a non-series propeller, it is difficult to
indicate the open water marine propeller performance without an
experimental study to measure the marine propeller parameters.
In the present study, the open water performance of a non-series
marine propeller has been carried out experimentally. The
geometrical aspects of a commercial non-series marine propeller
have been measured for a propeller blade area ratio of 0.3985. The
measured propeller performance parameters were the thrust and
torque coefficients for different propeller rotational speed and
different water channel flow velocity, then the open water
performance for the propeller has been plotted.
In addition, a direct comparison between the obtained
experimental results and a theoretical study of a B-series marine
propeller of the same blade area ratio has been carried out. A
correction factor has been introduced to apply the operating
conditions of the experimental results to that of the theoretical study
for the studied marine propeller.
Abstract: This paper presents how the real-time chatter
prevention can be realized by feedback of acoustic cutting signal, and
the efficacy of the proposed adaptive spindle speed tuning algorithm is
verified by intensive experimental simulations. A pair of
microphones, perpendicular to each other, is used to acquire the
acoustic cutting signal resulting from milling chatter. A real-time
feedback control loop is constructed for spindle speed compensation
so that the milling process can be ensured to be within the stability
zone of stability lobe diagram. Acoustic Chatter Signal Index (ACSI)
and Spindle Speed Compensation Strategy (SSCS) are proposed to
quantify the acoustic signal and actively tune the spindle speed
respectively. By converting the acoustic feedback signal into ACSI,
an appropriate Spindle Speed Compensation Rate (SSCR) can be
determined by SSCS based on real-time chatter level or ACSI.
Accordingly, the compensation command, referred to as Added-On
Voltage (AOV), is applied to increase/decrease the spindle motor
speed. By inspection on the precision and quality of the workpiece
surface after milling, the efficacy of the real-time chatter prevention
strategy via acoustic signal feedback is further assured.
Abstract: Run-offs are considered as important hydrological factors in feasibility studies of river engineering and irrigation-related projects under arid and semi-arid condition. Flood control is one of the crucial factor, the management of which while mitigates its destructive consequences, abstracts considerable volume of renewable water resources. The methodology applied here was based on Mizumura, which applied a mathematical model for simple tank to simulate the rainfall-run-off process in a particular water basin using the data from the observational hydrograph. The model was applied in the Dez River water basin adjacent to Greater Dezful region, Iran in order to simulate and estimate the floods. Results indicated that the calculated hydrographs using the simple tank method, SCS-CN model and the observation hydrographs had a close proximity. It was also found that on average the flood time and discharge peaks in the simple tank were closer to the observational data than the CN method. On the other hand, the calculated flood volume in the CN model was significantly closer to the observational data than the simple tank model.
Abstract: People nowadays love to travel around the world.
Regardless of their location and time, they especially Muslims still need to perform their five times prayer. Normally for travelers, they
need to bring maps, compass and for Muslim, they even have to bring Qibla pointer when they travel. It is slightly difficult to
determine the Qibla direction and to know the time for each prayer. In this paper we present a new electronic device called Universal Qibla and Prayer Time Finder to locate the Qibla direction and to determine each prayer time based on the current user-s location. This device use PIC microcontroller equipped with digital compass and
Global Positioning System (GPS) where it will display the exact Qibla direction and prayer time automatically at any place in the world. This device is reliable, user friendly and accurate in
determining the Qibla direction and prayer time.
Abstract: Software reuse can be considered as the most realistic
and promising way to improve software engineering productivity and
quality. Automated assistance for software reuse involves the
representation, classification, retrieval and adaptation of components.
The representation and retrieval of components are important to
software reuse in Component-Based on Software Development
(CBSD). However, current industrial component models mainly focus
on the implement techniques and ignore the semantic information
about component, so it is difficult to retrieve the components that
satisfy user-s requirements. This paper presents a method of business
component retrieval based on specification matching to solve the
software reuse of enterprise information system. First, a business
component model oriented reuse is proposed. In our model, the
business data type is represented as sign data type based on XML,
which can express the variable business data type that can describe the
variety of business operations. Based on this model, we propose
specification match relationships in two levels: business operation
level and business component level. In business operation level, we
use input business data types, output business data types and the
taxonomy of business operations evaluate the similarity between
business operations. In the business component level, we propose five
specification matches between business components. To retrieval
reusable business components, we propose the measure of similarity
degrees to calculate the similarities between business components.
Finally, a business component retrieval command like SQL is
proposed to help user to retrieve approximate business components
from component repository.
Abstract: Lacking an inherent “natural" dissimilarity measure
between objects in categorical dataset presents special difficulties in
clustering analysis. However, each categorical attributes from a given
dataset provides natural probability and information in the sense of
Shannon. In this paper, we proposed a novel method which
heuristically converts categorical attributes to numerical values by
exploiting such associated information. We conduct an experimental
study with real-life categorical dataset. The experiment demonstrates
the effectiveness of our approach.
Abstract: This research seeks to investigate the frequency and
profitability of index arbitrage opportunities involving the SET50
futures, SET50 component stocks, and the ThaiDEX SET50 ETF
(ticker symbol: TDEX). In particular, the frequency and profit of
arbitrage are measured in the following three arbitrage tests: (1)
SET50 futures vs. ThaiDEX SET50 ETF, (2) SET50 futures vs.
SET50 component stocks, and (3) ThaiDEX SET50 ETF vs. SET50
component stocks are investigated. For tests (2) and (3), the problems
involve conic optimization and quadratic programming as subproblems.
This research is first to apply conic optimization and
quadratic programming techniques in the context of index arbitrage
and is first to investigate such index arbitrage in the Thai equity and
derivatives markets. Thus, the contribution of this study is twofold.
First, its results would help understand the contribution of the
derivatives securities to the efficiency of the Thai markets. Second,
the methodology employed in this study can be applied to other
geographical markets, with minor adjustments.
Abstract: A numerical solution of the initial boundary value
problem of the suspended string vibrating equation with the
particular nonlinear damping term based on the finite difference
scheme is presented in this paper. The investigation of how the
second and third power terms of the nonlinear term affect the
vibration characteristic. We compare the vibration amplitude as a
result of the third power nonlinear damping with the second power
obtained from previous report provided that the same initial shape
and initial velocities are assumed. The comparison results show that
the vibration amplitude is inversely proportional to the coefficient of
the damping term for the third power nonlinear damping case, while
the vibration amplitude is proportional to the coefficient of the
damping term in the second power nonlinear damping case.
Abstract: In the last years numerous applications of Human-
Computer Interaction have exploited the capabilities of Time-of-
Flight cameras for achieving more and more comfortable and precise
interactions. In particular, gesture recognition is one of the most active
fields. This work presents a new method for interacting with a virtual
object in a 3D space. Our approach is based on the fusion of depth
data, supplied by a ToF camera, with color information, supplied
by a HD webcam. The hand detection procedure does not require
any learning phase and is able to concurrently manage gestures of
two hands. The system is robust to the presence in the scene of
other objects or people, thanks to the use of the Kalman filter for
maintaining the tracking of the hands.
Abstract: The paper is included within the framework of a
complex research program, which was initiated from the hypothesis
arguing on the existence of a correlation between pineal indolic and
peptide hormones and the somatic development rhythm, including
thus the epithalamium-epiphysis complex involvement. At birds,
pineal gland contains a circadian oscillator, playing a main role in the
temporal organization of the cerebral functions. The secretion of
pineal indolic hormones is characterized by a high endogenous
rhythmic alternation, modulated by the light/darkness (L/D)
succession and by temperature as well. The research has been carried
out using 100 chicken broilers - “Ross" commercial hybrid,
randomly allocated in two experimental batches: Lc batch, reared
under a 12L/12D lighting schedule and Lexp batch, which was photic
pinealectomised through continuous exposition to light (150 lux, 24
hours, 56 days). Chemical and physical features of the meat issued
from breast fillet and thighs muscles have been studied, determining
the dry matter, proteins, fat, collagen, salt content and pH value, as
well. Besides the variations of meat chemical composition in relation
with lighting schedule, other parameters have been studied: live
weight dynamics, feed intake and somatic development degree. The
achieved results became significant since chickens have 7 days of
age, some variations of the studied parameters being registered,
revealing that the pineal gland physiologic activity, in relation with
the lighting schedule, could be interpreted through the monitoring of
the somatic development technological parameters, usually studied
within the chicken broilers rearing aviculture practice.
Abstract: The rapid expansion of the web is causing the
constant growth of information, leading to several problems such as
increased difficulty of extracting potentially useful knowledge. Web
content mining confronts this problem gathering explicit information
from different web sites for its access and knowledge discovery.
Query interfaces of web databases share common building blocks.
After extracting information with parsing approach, we use a new
data mining algorithm to match a large number of schemas in
databases at a time. Using this algorithm increases the speed of
information matching. In addition, instead of simple 1:1 matching,
they do complex (m:n) matching between query interfaces. In this
paper we present a novel correlation mining algorithm that matches
correlated attributes with smaller cost. This algorithm uses Jaccard
measure to distinguish positive and negative correlated attributes.
After that, system matches the user query with different query
interfaces in special domain and finally chooses the nearest query
interface with user query to answer to it.
