Abstract: Active power filter continues to be a powerful tool to control harmonics in power systems thereby enhancing the power quality. This paper presents a fuzzy tuned PID controller based shunt active filter to diminish the harmonics caused by non linear loads like thyristor bridge rectifiers and imbalanced loads. Here Fuzzy controller provides the tuning of PID, based on firing of thyristor bridge rectifiers and variations in input rms current. The shunt APF system is implemented with three phase current controlled Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) and is connected at the point of common coupling for compensating the current harmonics by injecting equal but opposite filter currents. These controllers are capable of controlling dc-side capacitor voltage and estimating reference currents. Hysteresis Current Controller (HCC) is used to generate switching signals for the voltage source inverter. Simulation studies are carried out with non linear loads like thyristor bridge rectifier along with unbalanced loads and the results proved that the APF along with fuzzy tuned PID controller work flawlessly for different firing angles of non linear load.
Abstract: In realizing devices using ZnO, a key challenge is the
production of p-type material. Substitution of oxygen by a group-V
impurity is thought to result in deep acceptor levels, but a candidate
made up from a complex of a group-V impurity (P, As, Sb) on a Zn
site coupled with two vacant Zn sites is widely viewed as a candidate.
We show using density-functional simulations that in contrast to such
a view, complexes involving oxygen interstitials are energetically
more favorable, resulting in group-V impurities coordinated with four,
five or six oxygen atoms.

Abstract: Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are multi-hop
wireless networks in which all nodes cooperatively maintain network
connectivity. In such a multi-hop wireless network, every node may
be required to perform routing in order to achieve end-to-end
communication among nodes. These networks are energy constrained
as most ad hoc mobile nodes today operate with limited battery
power. Hence, it is important to minimize the energy consumption of
the entire network in order to maximize the lifetime of ad hoc
networks. In this paper, a mechanism involving the integration of
load balancing approach and transmission power control approach is
introduced to maximize the life-span of MANETs. The mechanism is
applied on Ad hoc On-demand Vector (AODV) protocol to make it
as energy aware AODV (EA_AODV). The simulation is carried out
using GloMoSim2.03 simulator. The results show that the proposed
mechanism reduces the average required transmission energy per
packet compared to the standard AODV.
Abstract: A new data fusion method called joint probability density matrix (JPDM) is proposed, which can associate and fuse measurements from spatially distributed heterogeneous sensors to identify the real target in a surveillance region. Using the probabilistic grids representation, we numerically combine the uncertainty regions of all the measurements in a general framework. The NP-hard multisensor data fusion problem has been converted to a peak picking problem in the grids map. Unlike most of the existing data fusion method, the JPDM method dose not need association processing, and will not lead to combinatorial explosion. Its convergence to the CRLB with a diminishing grid size has been proved. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
Abstract: The flow filed around a flatted-roof compound has
been investigated by means of 2D and 3D numerical simulations. A
constant wind velocity profile, based both on the maximum reference
wind speed in the building site (peak gust speed worked out for a 50-
year return period) and on the local roughness coefficient, has been
simulated in order to determine the wind-induced loads on top of the
roof. After determining the influence of the incoming wind directions
on the induced roof loads, a 2D analysis of the most severe load
condition has been performed, achieving a numerical quantification
of the expected wind-induced forces on the PV panels on top of the
roof.
Abstract: A considerable amount of energy is consumed during
transmission and reception of messages in a wireless mesh network
(WMN). Reducing per-node transmission power would greatly
increase the network lifetime via power conservation in addition to
increasing the network capacity via better spatial bandwidth reuse. In
this work, the problem of topology control in a hybrid WMN of
heterogeneous wireless devices with varying maximum transmission
ranges is considered. A localized distributed topology control
algorithm is presented which calculates the optimal transmission
power so that (1) network connectivity is maintained (2) node
transmission power is reduced to cover only the nearest neighbours
(3) networks lifetime is extended. Simulations and analysis of results
are carried out in the NS-2 environment to demonstrate the
correctness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Abstract: Supersonic open and closed cavity flows are investigated experimentally and computationally. Free stream Mach number of two is set. Schlieren imaging is used to visualise the flow behaviour showing stark differences between open and closed. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to simulate open cavity of flow with aspect ratio of 4. A rear wall treatment is implemented in order to pursue a simple passive control approach. Good qualitative agreement is achieved between the experimental flow visualisation and the CFD in terms of the expansion-shock waves system. The cavity oscillations are shown to be dominated by the first and third Rossister modes combining to high fluctuations of non-linear nature above the cavity rear edge. A simple rear wall treatment in terms of a hole shows mixed effect on the flow oscillations, RMS contours, and time history density fluctuations are given and analysed.
Abstract: This paper presents a fuzzy control system for a three degree of freedom (3-DOF) stabilized platform with explicit decoupling scheme. The system under consideration is a system with strong interactions between three channels. By using the concept of decentralized control, a control structure is developed that is composed of three control loops, each of which is associated with a single-variable fuzzy controller and a decoupling unit. Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy control algorithm is used to implement the fuzzy controller. The decoupling units design is based on the adaptive theory reasoning. Simulation tests were established using Simulink of Matlab. The obtained results have demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Simulation results are represented in this paper.
Abstract: Power System Security is a major concern in real time
operation. Conventional method of security evaluation consists of
performing continuous load flow and transient stability studies by
simulation program. This is highly time consuming and infeasible
for on-line application. Pattern Recognition (PR) is a promising
tool for on-line security evaluation. This paper proposes a Support
Vector Machine (SVM) based binary classification for static and
transient security evaluation. The proposed SVM based PR approach
is implemented on New England 39 Bus and IEEE 57 Bus systems.
The simulation results of SVM classifier is compared with the other
classifier algorithms like Method of Least Squares (MLS), Multi-
Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA)
classifiers.
Abstract: This paper presents a multiband CPW-fed slot antenna
with L-slot bowtie tuning stub. The proposed antenna has been
designed for PCS 1900, UMTS, WLAN 802.11 a/b/g and bluetooth
applications, with a cost-effective FR4 substrate. The proposed
antenna still radiate as omni-directional in azimuth plane and
sufficient bandwidth for all above mentions. The proposed antenna
works as dual-wideband, bandwidth at low frequency band and high
frequency are about 45.49 % and 22.39 % respectively. The
experimental results of the constructed prototype are presented and
also compared with simulation results using a commercial software
tool.
Abstract: Due to rapid economic growth, Indonesia's energy needs is rapidly increasing. Indonesia-s primary energy consumption has doubled in 2007 compared to 2003. Indonesia's status change from oil net-exporter to oil net-importer country recently has increased Indonesia's concern over energy security. Due to this, oil import becomes center of attention in the dynamics of Indonesia's energy security. Conventional studies addressing Indonesia's energy security have focused on energy production sector. This study explores Indonesia-s energy security considering energy import sector by modeling and simulating Indonesia-s energy-related policies using system dynamics. Simulation result of Indonesia's energy security in 2020 in Business-As-Usual scenario shows that in term of supply demand ratio, energy security will be very high, but also it poses high dependence on energy import. The Alternative scenario result shows lower energy security in term of supply demand ratio and much lower dependence on energy import. It is also found that the Alternative scenario produce lower GDP growth.
Abstract: In this paper, a direct torque control - space vector
modulation (DTC-SVM) scheme is presented for a six-phase speed
and voltage sensorless induction motor (IM) drive. The decoupled
torque and stator flux control is achieved based on IM stator flux field orientation. The rotor speed is detected by on-line estimating of
the rotor angular slip speed and stator vector flux speed. In addition, a simple method is introduced to estimate the stator resistance.
Moreover in this control scheme the voltage sensors are eliminated
and actual motor phase voltages are approximated by using PWM
inverter switching times and the dc link voltage. Finally, some simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the
effectiveness and capability of the proposed control scheme.
Abstract: In this paper, numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of disturbance block on flow field of the classical square lid-driven cavity. Attentions are focused on vortex formation and studying the effect of block position on its structure. Corner vortices are different upon block position and new vortices are produced because of the block. Finite volume method is used to solve Navier-Stokes equations and PISO algorithm is employed for the linkage of velocity and pressure. Verification and grid independency of results are reported. Stream lines are sketched to visualize vortex structure in different block positions.
Abstract: The use of 3D computer-aided design (CAD) models
to support construction project planning has been increasing in the
previous year. 3D CAD models reveal more planning ideas by
visually showing the construction site environment in different stages
of the construction process. Using 3D CAD models together with
scheduling software to prepare construction plan can identify errors
in process sequence and spatial arrangement, which is vital to the
success of a construction project. A number of 4D (3D plus time)
CAD tools has been developed and utilized in different construction
projects due to the awareness of their importance. Virtual prototyping
extends the idea of 4D CAD by integrating more features for
simulating real construction process. Virtual prototyping originates
from the manufacturing industry where production of products such
as cars and airplanes are virtually simulated in computer before they
are built in the factory. Virtual prototyping integrates 3D CAD,
simulation engine, analysis tools (like structural analysis and
collision detection), and knowledgebase to streamline the whole
product design and production process. In this paper, we present the
application of a virtual prototyping software which has been used in
a few construction projects in Hong Kong to support construction
project planning. Specifically, the paper presents an implementation
of virtual prototyping in a residential building project in Hong Kong.
The applicability, difficulties and benefits of construction virtual
prototyping are examined based on this project.
Abstract: A simple analytical model has been developed to
optimize biasing conditions for obtaining maximum linearity among
lattice-matched, pseudomorphic and metamorphic HEMT types as
well as enhancement and depletion HEMT modes. A nonlinear
current-voltage model has been simulated based on extracted data to
study and select the most appropriate type and mode of HEMT in
terms of a given gate-source biasing voltage within the device so as
to employ the circuit for the highest possible output current or
voltage linear swing. Simulation results can be used as a basis for the
selection of optimum gate-source biasing voltage for a given type
and mode of HEMT with regard to a circuit design. The
consequences can also be a criterion for choosing the optimum type
or mode of HEMT for a predetermined biasing condition.
Abstract: In a metal forming process, the friction between the
material and the tools influences the process by modifying the stress
distribution of the workpiece. This frictional behaviour is often taken
into account by using a constant coefficient of friction in the finite
element simulations of sheet metal forming processes. However,
friction coefficient varies in time and space with many parameters.
The Stribeck friction model is investigated in this study to predict
springback behaviour of AA6061-T4 sheets during V-bending
process. The coefficient of friction in Stribeck curve depends on
sliding velocity and contact pressure. The plane-strain bending
process is simulated in ABAQUS/Standard. We compared the
computed punch load-stroke curves and springback related to the
constant coefficient of friction with the defined friction model. The
results clearly showed that the new friction model provides better
agreement between experiments and results of numerical simulations.
The influence of friction models on stress distribution in the
workpiece is also studied numerically
Abstract: The problem of incompressible steady flow simulation around an airfoil is discussed. For some simplest airfoils (circular, elliptical, Zhukovsky airfoils) the exact solution is known from complex analysis. It allows to compute the intensity of vortex layer which simulates the airfoil. Some modifications of the vortex element method are proposed and test computations are carried out. It-s shown that the these approaches are much more effective in comparison with the classical numerical scheme.
Abstract: One of the most attractive and important field of chaos theory is control of chaos. In this paper, we try to present a simple framework for chaotic motion control using the feedback linearization method. Using this approach, we derive a strategy, which can be easily applied to the other chaotic systems. This task presents two novel results: the desired periodic orbit need not be a solution of the original dynamics and the other is the robustness of response against parameter variations. The illustrated simulations show the ability of these. In addition, by a comparison between a conventional state feedback and our proposed method it is demonstrated that the introduced technique is more efficient.
Abstract: Com Poisson distribution is capable of modeling the count responses irrespective of their mean variance relation and the parameters of this distribution when fitted to a simple cross sectional data can be efficiently estimated using maximum likelihood (ML) method. In the regression setup, however, ML estimation of the parameters of the Com Poisson based generalized linear model is computationally intensive. In this paper, we propose to use quasilikelihood (QL) approach to estimate the effect of the covariates on the Com Poisson counts and investigate the performance of this method with respect to the ML method. QL estimates are consistent and almost as efficient as ML estimates. The simulation studies show that the efficiency loss in the estimation of all the parameters using QL approach as compared to ML approach is quite negligible, whereas QL approach is lesser involving than ML approach.
