Abstract: It is the living conditions in the cities that determine the future of our livelihood. “To change life, we must first change space"- Henri Lefebvre. Sustainable development is a utopian aspiration for South African cities (especially the case study of the Gauteng City Region), which are currently characterized by unplanned growth and increasing urban sprawl. While the reasons for poor environmental quality and living conditions are undoubtedly diverse and complex, having political, economical and social dimensions, it is argued that the prevailing approach to layout planning in South Africa is part of the problem. This article seeks a solution to the problem of sustainability, from a spatial planning perspective. The spatial planning tool, the urban development boundary, is introduced as the concept that will ensure empty talk being translated into a sustainable vision. The urban development boundary is a spatial planning tool that can be used and implemented to direct urban growth towards a more sustainable form. The urban development boundary aims to ensure planned urban areas, in contrast to the current unplanned areas characterized by urban sprawl and insufficient infrastructure. However, the success of the urban development boundary concept is subject to effective implementation measures, as well as adequate and efficient management. The concept of sustainable development can function as a driving force underlying societal change and transformation, but the interface between spatial planning and environmental management needs to be established (as this is the core aspects underlying sustainable development), and authorities needs to understand and implement this interface consecutively. This interface can, however, realize in terms of the objectives of the planning tool – the urban development boundary. The case study, the Gauteng City Region, is depicted as a site of economic growth and innovation, but there is a lack of good urban and regional governance, impacting on the design (layout) and function of urban areas and land use, as current authorities make uninformed decisions in terms of development applications, leading to unsustainable urban forms and unsustainable nodes. Place and space concepts are thus critical matters applicable to planning of the Gauteng City Region. The urban development boundary are thus explored as a planning tool to guide decision-making, and create a sustainable urban form, leading to better environmental and living conditions, and continuous sustainability.
Abstract: One of the most growing areas in the embedded community is multimedia devices. Multimedia devices incorporate a number of complicated functions for their operation, like motion estimation. A multitude of different implementations have been proposed to reduce motion estimation complexity, such as spiral search. We have studied the implementations of spiral search and identified areas of improvement. We propose a modified spiral search algorithm, with lower computational complexity compared to the original spiral search. We have implemented our algorithm on an embedded ARM based architecture, with custom memory hierarchy. The resulting system yields energy consumption reduction up to 64% and performance increase up to 77%, with a small penalty of 2.3 dB, in average, of video quality compared with the original spiral search algorithm.
Abstract: Neoclassical and functionalist explanations of self
organization in multiagent systems have been criticized on several accounts including unrealistic explication of overadapted agents and
failure to resolve problems of externality. The paper outlines a more
elaborate and dynamic model that is capable of resolving these dilemmas. An illustrative example where behavioral diversity is
cobred in a repeated nonzero sum task via evolutionary computing is
presented.
Abstract: This research paper designs a unique motion planner
of multiple platoons of nonholonomic car-like robots as a feasible
solution to the lane changing/merging maneuvers. The decentralized
planner with a leaderless approach and a path-guidance principle
derived from the Lyapunov-based control scheme generates collision
free avoidance and safe merging maneuvers from multiple lanes to a
single lane by deploying a split/merge strategy. The fixed obstacles
are the markings and boundaries of the road lanes, while the moving
obstacles are the robots themselves. Real and virtual road lane
markings and the boundaries of road lanes are incorporated into a
workspace to achieve the desired formation and configuration of the
robots. Convergence of the robots to goal configurations and the
repulsion of the robots from specified obstacles are achieved by
suitable attractive and repulsive potential field functions,
respectively. The results can be viewed as a significant contribution
to the avoidance algorithm of the intelligent vehicle systems (IVS).
Computer simulations highlight the effectiveness of the split/merge
strategy and the acceleration-based controllers.
Abstract: In order to supplement the brittle property of concrete,
fibers are added into concrete mixtures. Compared to general concrete,
various characteristics such as tensile strength, bending strength,
bending toughness, and resistance to crack are superior, and even
when cracks occur, improvements on toughness as well as resistance
to shock are excellent due to the growth of fracture energy. Increased
function of steel fiber reinforced concrete can be differentiated
depending on the fiber dispersion, and sand percentage can be an
important influence on the fiber dispersion. Therefore, in this research,
experiments were planned on sand percentage in order to apprehend
the influence of sand percentage on the bending properties and direct
tension of SFRC and basic experiments were conducted on bending
and direct tension in order to recognize the properties of bending
properties and direct tension following the size of the aggregates and
sand percentage.
Abstract: In this paper, a new method is proposed to find the fuzzy optimal solution of fuzzy assignment problems by representing all the parameters as triangular fuzzy numbers. The advantages of the pro-posed method are also discussed. To illustrate the proposed method a fuzzy assignment problem is solved by using the proposed method and the obtained results are discussed. The proposed method is easy to understand and to apply for finding the fuzzy optimal solution of fuzzy assignment problems occurring in real life situations.
Abstract: This paper describes a novel approach for deriving
modules from protein-protein interaction networks, which combines
functional information with topological properties of the network.
This approach is based on weighted clustering coefficient, which
uses weights representing the functional similarities between the
proteins. These weights are calculated according to the semantic
similarity between the proteins, which is based on their Gene
Ontology terms. We recently proposed an algorithm for identification
of functional modules, called SWEMODE (Semantic WEights for
MODule Elucidation), that identifies dense sub-graphs containing
functionally similar proteins. The rational underlying this approach is
that each module can be reduced to a set of triangles (protein triplets
connected to each other). Here, we propose considering semantic
similarity weights of all triangle-forming edges between proteins. We
also apply varying semantic similarity thresholds between
neighbours of each node that are not neighbours to each other (and
hereby do not form a triangle), to derive new potential triangles to
include in module-defining procedure. The results show an
improvement of pure topological approach, in terms of number of
predicted modules that match known complexes.
Abstract: The winding hot-spot temperature is one of the most
critical parameters that affect the useful life of the power
transformers. The winding hot-spot temperature can be calculated as
function of the top-oil temperature that can estimated by using the
ambient temperature and transformer loading measured data. This
paper proposes the estimation of the top-oil temperature by using a
method based on Least Squares Support Vector Machines approach.
The estimated top-oil temperature is compared with measured data of
a power transformer in operation. The results are also compared with
methods based on the IEEE Standard C57.91-1995/2000 and
Artificial Neural Networks. It is shown that the Least Squares
Support Vector Machines approach presents better performance than
the methods based in the IEEE Standard C57.91-1995/2000 and
artificial neural networks.
Abstract: Organizational communication is an administrative
function crucial especially for executives in the implementation of
organizational and administrative functions. Executives spend a
significant part of their time on communicative activities. Doing his or her daily routine, arranging meeting schedules, speaking on the telephone, reading or replying to business correspondence, or
fulfilling the control functions within the organization, an executive typically engages in communication processes.
Efficient communication is the principal device for the adequate implementation of administrative and organizational activities. For
this purpose, management needs to specify the kind of
communication system to be set up and the kind of communication
devices to be used. Communication is vital for any organization.
In conventional offices, communication takes place within the hierarchical pyramid called the organizational structure, and is known as formal or informal communication. Formal communication
is the type that works in specified structures within the organizational rules and towards the organizational goals. Informal communication, on the other hand, is the unofficial type taking place among staff as
face-to-face or telephone interaction.
Communication in virtual as well as conventional offices is
essential for obtaining the right information in administrative
activities and decision-making. Virtual communication technologies
increase the efficiency of communication especially in virtual teams.
Group communication is strengthened through an inter-group central
channel. Further, ease of information transmission makes it possible
to reach the information at the source, allowing efficient and correct decisions. Virtual offices can present as a whole the elements of information which conventional offices produce in different
environments.
At present, virtual work has become a reality with its pros and
cons, and will probably spread very rapidly in coming years, in line
with the growth in information technologies.
Abstract: In this paper, we study the formation control problem
for car-like mobile robots. A team of nonholonomic mobile robots navigate in a terrain with obstacles, while maintaining a desired
formation, using a leader-following strategy. A set of artificial potential field functions is proposed using the direct Lyapunov
method for the avoidance of obstacles and attraction to their designated targets. The effectiveness of the proposed control laws to verify the feasibility of the model is demonstrated through computer simulations
Abstract: A prime cordial labeling of a graph G with vertex set V is a bijection f from V to {1, 2, ..., |V |} such that each edge uv is assigned the label 1 if gcd(f(u), f(v)) = 1 and 0 if gcd(f(u), f(v)) > 1, then the number of edges labeled with 0 and the number of edges labeled with 1 differ by at most 1. In this paper we exhibit some characterization results and new constructions on prime cordial graphs.
Abstract: The paper presents a new hybridization methodology involving Neural, Fuzzy and Rough Computing. A Rough Sets based approximation technique has been proposed based on a certain Neuro – Fuzzy architecture. A New Rough Neuron composition consisting of a combination of a Lower Bound neuron and a Boundary neuron has also been described. The conventional convergence of error in back propagation has been given away for a new framework based on 'Output Excitation Factor' and an inverse input transfer function. The paper also presents a brief comparison of performances, of the existing Rough Neural Networks and ANFIS architecture against the proposed methodology. It can be observed that the rough approximation based neuro-fuzzy architecture is superior to its counterparts.
Abstract: In this paper, four carbazole-based D-D-π-A organic
dyes code as CCT2A, CCT3A, CCT1PA and CCT2PA were reported.
A series of these organic dyes containing identical donor and
acceptor group but different π-system. The effect of replacing of
thiophene by phenyl thiophene as π-system on the physical
properties has been focused. The structural, energetic properties and
absorption spectra were theoretically investigated by means of
Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent Density
Functional Theory (TD-DFT). The results show that nonplanar
conformation due to steric hindrance in donor part (cabazolecarbazole
unit) of dye molecule can prevent unfavorable dye
aggregation. By means of the TD-DFT method, the absorption
spectra were calculated by B3LYP and BHandHLYP to study the
affect of hybrid functional on the excitation energy (Eg). The results
revealed the increasing of thiophene units not only resulted in
decreasing of Eg, but also found the shifting of absorption spectra to
higher wavelength. TD-DFT/BHandHLYP calculated results are
more strongly agreed with the experimental data than B3LYP
functions. Furthermore, the adsorptions of CCT2A and CCT3A on the
TiO2 anatase (101) surface were carried out by mean of the chemical
periodic calculation. The result exhibit the strong adsorption energy.
The calculated results provide our new organic dyes can be
effectively used as dye for Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSC).
Abstract: Silver/polylactide nanocomposites (Ag/PLA-NCs) were
synthesized via chemical reduction method in diphase solvent. Silver
nitrate and sodium borohydride were used as a silver precursor
and reducing agent in the polylactide (PLA). The properties of
Ag/PLA-NCs were studied as a function of the weight percentages
of silver nanoparticles (8, 16 and 32 wt% of Ag-NPs) relative to
the weight of PLA. The Ag/PLA-NCs were characterized by Xray
diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM),
electro-optical microscopy (EOM), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis)
and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). XRD patterns
confirmed that Ag-NPs crystallographic planes were face centered
cubic (fcc) type. TEM images showed that mean diameters of Ag-NPs
were 3.30, 3.80 and 4.80 nm. Electro-optical microscopy revealed
excellent dispersion and interaction between Ag-NPs and PLA films.
The generation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed from the UVvisible
spectra. FT-IR spectra showed that there were no significant
differences between PLA and Ag/PLA-NCs films. The synthesized
Ag/PLA-NCs were stable in organic solution over a long period of
time without sign of precipitation.
Abstract: In this paper we propose a method for modeling the
correlation between the received signals by two or more antennas
operating in a multipath environment. Considering the maximum
excess delay in the channel being modeled, an elliptical region
surrounding both transmitter and receiver antennas is produced. A
number of scatterers are randomly distributed in this region and
scatter the incoming waves. The amplitude and phase of incoming
waves are computed and used to obtain statistical properties of the
received signals. This model has the distinguishable advantage of
being applicable for any configuration of antennas. Furthermore the
common PDF (Probability Distribution Function) of received wave
amplitudes for any pair of antennas can be calculated and used to
produce statistical parameters of received signals.
Abstract: This paper describes the design process and the realtime validation of an innovative autonomous mid-air flight and landing system developed by the Italian Aerospace Research Center in the framework of the Italian national funded project TECVOL (Technologies for the Autonomous Flight). In the paper it is provided an insight of the whole development process of the system under study. In particular, the project framework is illustrated at first, then the functional context and the adopted design and testing approach are described, and finally the on-ground validation test rig on purpose designed is addressed in details. Furthermore, the hardwarein- the-loop validation of the autonomous mid-air flight and landing system by means of the real-time test rig is described and discussed.
Abstract: In this work a software simulation model has been
proposed for two driven wheels mobile robot path planning; that can
navigate in dynamic environment with static distributed obstacles.
The work involves utilizing Bezier curve method in a proposed N
order matrix form; for engineering the mobile robot path. The Bezier
curve drawbacks in this field have been diagnosed. Two directions:
Up and Right function has been proposed; Probability Recursive
Function (PRF) to overcome those drawbacks.
PRF functionality has been developed through a proposed;
obstacle detection function, optimization function which has the
capability of prediction the optimum path without comparison
between all feasible paths, and N order Bezier curve function that
ensures the drawing of the obtained path.
The simulation results that have been taken showed; the mobile
robot travels successfully from starting point and reaching its goal
point. All obstacles that are located in its way have been avoided.
This navigation is being done successfully using the proposed PRF
techniques.
Abstract: This study investigated the effect of cross sectional
geometry on sediment transport rate. The processes of sediment
transport are generally associated to environmental management,
such as pollution caused by the forming of suspended sediment in the
channel network of a watershed and preserving physical habitats and
native vegetations, and engineering applications, such as the
influence of sediment transport on hydraulic structures and flood
control design. Many equations have been proposed for computing
the sediment transport, the influence of many variables on sediment
transport has been understood; however, the effect of other variables
still requires further research. For open channel flow, sediment
transport capacity is recognized to be a function of friction slope,
flow velocity, grain size, grain roughness and form roughness, the
hydraulic radius of the bed section and the type and quantity of
vegetation cover. The effect of cross sectional geometry of the
channel on sediment transport is one of the variables that need
additional investigation. The width-depth ratio (W/d) is a
comparative indicator of the channel shape. The width is the total
distance across the channel and the depth is the mean depth of the
channel. The mean depth is best calculated as total cross-sectional
area divided by the top width. Channels with high W/d ratios tend to
be shallow and wide, while channels with low (W/d) ratios tend to be
narrow and deep. In this study, the effects of the width-depth ratio on
sediment transport was demonstrated theoretically by inserting the
shape factor in sediment continuity equation and analytically by
utilizing the field data sets for Yalobusha River. It was found by
utilizing the two approaches as a width-depth ratio increases the
sediment transport decreases.
Abstract: This paper describes a method of signal process applied
on an end effects of Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) to provide an
improvement in the reality of spectrum. The method is based on
back-propagation network (BPN). To improve the effect, the end
extension of the original signal is obtained by back-propagation
network. A full waveform including origin and its extension is
decomposed by using empirical mode decomposition (EMD) to obtain
intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) of the waveform. Then, the Hilbert
transform (HT) is applied to the IMFs to obtain the Hilbert spectrum of
the waveform. As a result, the method is superiority of the processing
of end effect of HHT to obtain the real frequency spectrum of signals.
Abstract: To assess the effects of functional protein on osteoblast, Large quantity of high-purity osteoblasts had been cultivated successfully by adopting sequential enzyme digestion. The growth curve of osteoblasts was protracted by cell counting. Proliferation of osteoblasts was assessed by MTT colorimetry. The experimental results show the functional protein can enhance proliferation, the properties of adhesion and discuss the effect of osteopontin on osteoblast.
