Abstract: One of the causes of water pollution is the presence of heavy metals in water. In the present study, an adsorbent prepared from the raw bark of the Pongamia pinnata tree is used for the removal of ferrous or ferric ions from aqueous and waste water containing heavy metals. Adsorption studies were conducted at different pH, concentration of metal ion, amount of adsorbent, contact time, agitation and temperature. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were applied for the results. The Langmuir isotherms were best fitted by the equilibrium data. The maximum adsorption was found to 146mg/g in waste water at a temperature of 30°C which is in agreement as comparable to the adsorption capacity of different adsorbents reported in literature. Pseudo second order model best fitted the adsorption of both ferrous and ferric ions.
Abstract: New complexes of nickel (II) have been synthesized in the reaction mixture of nickel (II) acetate and 4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxamide. Bis(4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxamidato-O,O)nickel (II) and diaquabis(4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxamidato-O,O)nickel (II) were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry. Elemental analysis and mass spectrometry data of the complexes suggests the stoichiometry of 1:2 (metal-ligand).
Abstract: An optical chemical sensing film based on
immobilizing of 1,1′- diethyl 2,2′-cyanine (pseudocyanine iodide) in
nafion film was developed for the determination of Fe(III). The
sensing film was homogeneous, transparent, and mechanically stable.
Decrease of the absorbance measured at 518 nm was observed when
the sensing film was immersed in a solution of Fe(III). The optimum
response of the sensing film to Fe(III) was obtained in a solution with
pH 4.0. Linear calibration curve over an Fe(III) concentration range
of 1-30 ppm with a limit of detection of 0.71 ppm was obtained.
Cd(II) is the major interference. The sensing film exhibited good
stability for 2 months and high reproducibility. The proposed method
was applied for the determination of Fe(III) in water samples with
satisfactory results.
Abstract: Magnetic carbon nanotubes composites were obtained
by filling carbon nanotubes with paramagnetic iron oxide particles.
Detailed investigation of magnetic behaviour of resulting composites
was done at different temperatures. Measurements indicate that these
functionalized nanotubes are superparamagnetic at room temperature;
however, no superparamagnetism was observed at 125 K and 80 K.
The blocking temperature TB was estimated at 145 K. These magnetic
carbon nanotubes have the potential of being used in a wide range of
applications, in particular, the production of nanofluids, which can be
controlled and steered by appropriate magnetic fields.
Abstract: An electrical apparatus for measuring moisture
content was developed by our laboratory and uses dependence of
electrical properties on water content in studied material. Error
analysis of the apparatus was run by measuring different volumes of
water in a simplified specimen, i.e. hollow plexiglass block, in order
to avoid as many side-effects as possible. Obtained data were
processed using both basic and advanced statistics and results were
compared with each other. The influence of water content on
accuracy of measured data was studied as well as the influence of
variation of apparatus' proper arrangement or factual methodics of its
usage. The overall coefficient of variation was 4%. There was no
trend found in results of error dependence on water content.
Comparison with current surveys led to a conclusion, that the studied
apparatus can be used for indirect measurement of water content in
porous materials, with expectable error and under known conditions.
Factual experiments with porous materials are not involved, but are
currently under investigation.
Abstract: This work investigated the steady state and dynamic
simulation of a fixed bed industrial naphtha reforming reactors. The
performance of the reactor was investigated using a heterogeneous
model. For process simulation, the differential equations are solved
using the 4th order Runge-Kutta method .The models were validated
against measured process data of an existing naphtha reforming plant.
The results of simulation in terms of components yields and
temperature of the outlet were in good agreement with empirical data.
The simple model displays a useful tool for dynamic simulation,
optimization and control of naphtha reforming.
Abstract: Noble metal participation in nanostructured
semiconductor catalysts has drawn much interest because of their
improved properties. Recently, it has been discussed by many
researchers that Ag participation in TiO2, CuO, ZnO semiconductors
showed improved photocatalytic and optical properties. In this
research, Ag/ZnO nanocomposite particles were prepared by
Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis(USP) Method. 0.1M silver and zinc
nitrate aqueous solutions were used as precursor solutions. The
Ag:Zn atomic ratio of the solution was selected 1:1. Experiments
were taken place under constant air flow of 400 mL/min at 800°C
furnace temperature. Particles were characterized by X-Ray
Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and
Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The crystallite sizes of Ag
and ZnO in composite particles are 24.6 nm, 19.7 nm respectively.
Although, spherical nanocomposite particles are in a range of 300-
800 nm, these particles are formed by the aggregation of primary
particles which are in a range of 20-60 nm.
Abstract: Tea has several types of essential elements. Potassium,
magnesium and phosphorus are some examples of these elements.
Tea is widely used drink in Turkey, also some people puts a lemon
wedge to tea for different taste. In this study potassium, magnesium
and phosphorus contents after the hot water brewing of black and
green tea were determined by Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICPOES).
Furthermore, how the lemon addition to teas affects the
concentrations of the potassium, magnesium and phosphorus
amount are investigated.
From the results, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus
concentrations are found as 3003.3, 597.1, 1167.2 ppm in black tea
and 3718.0, 3830.5, 376.4 ppm in green tea, respectively. After
lemon addition potassium, magnesium and phosphorus
concentrations are changed to 14930, 830.4, 1113.5 ppm in black tea
and 15460.0, 909.5, 1152.5 ppm in green tea, respectively.
It is seen that lemon addition affects some essential elements in
black and green Turkish teas.
Abstract: Propranolol is worldwide hypertension drug that is active in S-isomer. Patients must use this drug throughout their lives, and this action employsa significant level of expenditure. A simpler synthesis and lower cost can reduce the price for the patient. A sis pathway of S-propranolol starting from protection of (R,S)-propranolol with di-t-butyldicarbonate and then the product is oxidized with pyridiniumchlorochromate. The selective reduction of ketone occurrs with sodiumborohydride in the presence of metal chloride provided S-propranolol.
Abstract: IFP Group Technology “Sulfrex process" was used in
Iran-s South Pars Gas Complex Refineries for removing sulfur
compounds such as mercaptans, carbonyl sulfide and hydrogen
sulfide, which uses sulfonated cobalt phthalocyanine dispersed in
alkaline solution as catalyst. In this technology, catalyst and alkaline
solution were used circularly. However the stability of catalyst due to
effect of some parameters would reduce with the running of the unit
and therefore sweetening efficiency would be decreased. Hence, the
aim of this research is study the factors effecting on the stability of
catalyst.
Abstract: Nanoemulsions are a class of emulsions with a droplet
size in the range of 50–500 nm and have attracted a great deal of
attention in recent years because it is unique characteristics. The
physicochemical properties of nanoemulsion suggests that it can be
successfully used to recover the residual oil which is trapped in the
fine pore of reservoir rock by capillary forces after primary and
secondary recovery. Oil-in-water nanoemulsion which can be formed
by high-energy emulsification techniques using specific surfactants
can reduce oil-water interfacial tension (IFT) by 3-4 orders of
magnitude. The present work is aimed on characterization of oil-inwater
nanoemulsion in terms of its phase behavior, morphological
studies; interfacial energy; ability to reduce the interfacial tension and
understanding the mechanisms of mobilization and displacement of
entrapped oil blobs by lowering interfacial tension both at the
macroscopic and microscopic level. In order to investigate the
efficiency of oil-water nanoemulsion in enhanced oil recovery
(EOR), experiments were performed to characterize the emulsion in
terms of their physicochemical properties and size distribution of the
dispersed oil droplet in water phase. Synthetic mineral oil and a series
of surfactants were used to prepare oil-in-water emulsions.
Characterization of emulsion shows that it follows pseudo-plastic
behaviour and drop size of dispersed oil phase follows lognormal
distribution. Flooding experiments were also carried out in a
sandpack system to evaluate the effectiveness of the nanoemulsion as
displacing fluid for enhanced oil recovery. Substantial additional
recoveries (more than 25% of original oil in place) over conventional
water flooding were obtained in the present investigation.
Abstract: The mesoporous MoO3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared
by incipient wetness impregnation method aiming to investigate the
effect of drying method and molybdenum content on the catalyst
property and performance towards the oxidation of benzothiophene
(BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyle dibenzothiophene
(4,6-DMDBT) with H2O2 for deep oxidative desulfurization of diesel
fuel. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, BET, BJH and SEM
method. The catalyst with 10wt.% and 15wt.% Mo content represent
same optimum performance for DBT and 4,6-DMDBT removal, but
a catalyst with 10wt.% Mo has higher efficiency than 15wt.% Mo for
BT conversion. The SEM images show that use of rotary evaporator
in drying step reaches a more homogenous impregnation. The
oxidation reactivity of different sulfur compounds was studied which
followed the order of DBT>4,6-DMDBT>>BT.
Abstract: Fly ash is one of the residues generated in
combustion, and comprises the fine particles that rise with the flue
gases. Ash which does not rise is termed bottom ash [1]. In our
country, it is expected that will be occurred 50 million tons of waste
ash per year until 2020. Released waste from the thermal power
plants is caused very significant problems as known. The fly ashes
can be evaluated by using as adsorbent material.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of use of
Tuncbilek fly ash like low-cost adsorbents for heavy metal
adsorption. First of all, Tuncbilek fly ash was characterized. For this
purpose; analysis such as sieve analysis, XRD, XRF, SEM and FT-IR
were performed.
Abstract: Prediction of viscosity of natural gas is an important parameter in the energy industries such as natural gas storage and transportation. In this study viscosity of different compositions of natural gas is modeled by using an artificial neural network (ANN) based on back-propagation method. A reliable database including more than 3841 experimental data of viscosity for testing and training of ANN is used. The designed neural network can predict the natural gas viscosity using pseudo-reduced pressure and pseudo-reduced temperature with AARD% of 0.221. The accuracy of designed ANN has been compared to other published empirical models. The comparison indicates that the proposed method can provide accurate results.
Abstract: Measurement of the COD of a spent caustic solution involves firstly digestion of a test sample with dichromate solution and secondly measurement of dichromate remained by titration by ferrous ammonium sulfate [FAS] to an end point. In this paper we study by a potentiometric end point with Ag/AgCl reference electrode and gold rode electrode. The potentiometric end point is sharp and easily identified especially for the samples with high turbidity and color that other methods such as colorimetric in this type of sample do not result in high precision. Because interim of titration responds quickly to potential changes within the [Cr+6/Cr+3& Fe+2/Fe+3] solution producing stable readings that is lead to accurate COD measurement. Finally results are compared with data determined using colorimetric method for standard samples. It is shown that the potentiometric end point titration with gold rode electrode can be used with equal or better facility
Abstract: The aim of this research was to calculate the thermal
properties of Au3Ni Nanowire. The molecular dynamics (MD)
simulation technique was used to obtain the effect of radius size on
the energy, the melting temperature and the latent heat of fusion at
the isobaric-isothermal (NPT) ensemble. The Quantum Sutton-Chen
(Q-SC) many body interatomic potentials energy have been used for
Gold (Au) and Nickel (Ni) elements and a mixing rule has been
devised to obtain the parameters of these potentials for nanowire
stats. Our MD simulation results show the melting temperature and
latent heat of fusion increase upon increasing diameter of nanowire.
Moreover, the cohesive energy decreased with increasing diameter of
nanowire.
Abstract: A group of Stellite alloys are studied in consideration
of temperature effects on their hardness and wear resistance. The
hardness test is conducted on a micro-hardness tester with a hot stage
equipped that allows heating the specimen up to 650°C. The wear
resistance of each alloy is evaluated using a pin-on-disc tribometer
with a heating furnace built-in that provides the temperature capacity
up to 450°C. The experimental results demonstrate that the hardness
and wear resistance of Stellite alloys behave differently at room
temperature and at high temperatures. The wear resistance of Stellite
alloys at room temperature mainly depends on their carbon content and
also influenced by the tungsten content in the alloys. However, at high
temperatures the wear mechanisms of Stellite alloys become more
complex, involving multiple factors. The relationships between
chemical composition, microstructure, hardness and wear resistance of
these alloys are studied, with focus on temperature effect on these
relations.
Abstract: The adsorption properties of CO and H2 on iron-based
catalyst with addition of Zr and Ni were investigated using
temperature programmed desorption process. It was found that on the
carburized iron-based catalysts, molecular state and dissociative state
CO existed together. The addition of Zr was preferential for the
molecular state adsorption of CO on iron-based catalyst and the
presence of Ni was beneficial to the dissociative adsorption of CO. On
H2 reduced catalysts, hydrogen mainly adsorbs on the surface iron
sites and surface oxide sites. On CO reduced catalysts, hydrogen
probably existed as the most stable CH and OH species. The addition
of Zr was not benefit to the dissociative adsorption of hydrogen on
iron-based catalyst and the presence of Ni was preferential for the
dissociative adsorption of hydrogen.
Abstract: Sulfide ion (S2-) is one of the most important ions to be
monitored due to its high toxicity, especially for aquatic organisms. In
this work, [Ca(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+-intercalated montmorillonite was
prepared and used as a sensor to construct a potentiometric electrode to
measure sulfide ion in solution. The formation of [Ca(2,2'-
bipyridine)3]2+ in montmorillonite was confirmed by Fourier Transform
Infrared spectra. The electrode worked well at pH 4-12 and 4-10 in
sulfide solution 10-2 M and 10-3 M, respectively, in terms of Nernstian
slope. The sensor gave good precision and low cost.
Abstract: Titanium oxide hollow microspheres were synthesized from organic precursor titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) using continuous spray pyrolysis reactor. Effects of precursor concentration, applied voltage and annealing have been investigated. It was observed that the annealing of the as-synthesized TiO2 hollow microspheres at 2500C, which had an average external diameter of 200 nm, leads to an increase in the size and also more spherical shape. The precursor concentration was found to have a direct impact on the size of the microspheres, which is also evident in the absorption spectrum. The as-prepared TiO2 hollow microspheres exhibited good photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MO.
