Abstract: Bubble columns have a variety of applications in
absorption, bio-reactions, catalytic slurry reactions, and coal
liquefaction; because they are simple to operate, provide good heat
and mass transfer, having less operational cost. The use of
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for bubble column becomes
important, since it can describe the fluid hydrodynamics on both local
and global scale. Euler- Euler two-phase fluid model has been used to
simulate two-phase (air and water) transient up-flow in bubble
column (15cm diameter) using FLUENT6.3. These simulations and
experiments were operated over a range of superficial gas velocities
in the bubbly flow and churn turbulent regime (1 to16 cm/s) at
ambient conditions. Liquid velocity was varied from 0 to 16cm/s. The
turbulence in the liquid phase is described using the standard k-ε
model. The interactions between the two phases are described
through drag coefficient formulations (Schiller Neumann). The
objectives are to validate CFD simulations with experimental data,
and to obtain grid-independent numerical solutions. Quantitatively
good agreements are obtained between experimental data for hold-up
and simulation values. Axial liquid velocity profiles and gas holdup
profiles were also obtained for the simulation.
Abstract: Although lighting systems powered by Photovoltaic
(PV) cells have existed for many years, they are not widely used,
especially in lighting for buildings, due to their high initial cost and
low conversion efficiency. One of the technical challenges facing PV
powered lighting systems has been how to use dc power generated by
the PV module to energize common light sources that are designed to
operate efficiently under ac power. Usually, the efficiency of the dc
light sources is very poor compared to ac light sources. Rapid
developments in LED lighting systems have made this technology a
potential candidate for PV powered lighting systems. This study
analyzed the efficiency of each component of PV powered lighting
systems to identify optimum system configurations for different
applications.
Abstract: Thermal conductivity is an important characteristic of
a nanofluid in laminar flow heat transfer. This paper presents an
improved model for the prediction of the effective thermal
conductivity of nanofluids based on dimensionless groups. The
model expresses the thermal conductivity of a nanofluid as a function
of the thermal conductivity of the solid and liquid, their volume
fractions and particle size. The proposed model includes a parameter
which accounts for the interfacial shell, brownian motion, and
aggregation of particle. The validation of the model is verified by
applying the results obtained by the experiments of Tio2-water and
Al2o3-water nanofluids.
Abstract: One of the major causes of voltage instability is the reactive power limit of the system. Improving the system's reactive power handling capacity via Flexible AC transmission System (FACTS) devices is a remedy for prevention of voltage instability and hence voltage collapse. In this paper, the effects of SVC and STATCOM in Static Voltage Stability Margin Enhancement will be studied. AC and DC representations of SVC and STATCOM are used in the continuation power flow process in static voltage stability study. The IEEE-14 bus system is simulated to test the increasing loadability. It is found that these controllers significantly increase the loadability margin of power systems.
Abstract: This article gives a short preview of the new software
created especially for palletizing process in automated production
systems. Each chapter of this article is about problem solving in
development of modules in Java programming language. First part
describes structure of the software, its modules and data flow
between them. Second part describes all deployment methods, which
are implemented in the software. Next chapter is about twodimensional
editor created for manipulation with objects in each
layer of the load and gives calculations for collision control. Module
of virtual reality used for three-dimensional preview and creation of
the load is described in the fifth chapter. The last part of this article
describes communication and data flow between control system of
the robot, vision system and software.
Abstract: The tubes in an Ammonia primary reformer furnace
operate close to the limits of materials technology in terms of the
stress induced as a result of very high temperatures, combined with
large differential pressures across the tube wall. Operation at tube
wall temperatures significantly above design can result in a rapid
increase in the number of tube failures, since tube life is very
sensitive to the absolute operating temperature of the tube. Clearly it
is important to measure tube wall temperatures accurately in order to
prevent premature tube failure by overheating.. In the present study,
the catalyst tubes in an Ammonia primary reformer has been modeled
taking into consideration heat, mass and momentum transfer as well
as reformer characteristics.. The investigations concern the effects of
tube characteristics and superficial tube wall temperatures on of the
percentage of heat flux, unconverted methane and production of
Hydrogen for various values of steam to carbon ratios. The results
show the impact of catalyst tubes length and diameters on the
performance of operating parameters in ammonia primary reformers.
Abstract: A two-parameter fatigue model explicitly accounting for the cyclic as well as the mean stress was used to fit static and fatigue data available in literature concerning carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates subjected tension-tension fatigue. The model confirms the strength–life equal rank assumption and predicts reasonably the probability of failure under cyclic loading. The model parameters were found by best fitting procedures and required a minimum of experimental tests.
Abstract: In this paper back-propagation artificial neural
network (BPANN) is employed to predict the limiting drawing ratio
(LDR) of the deep drawing process. To prepare a training set for
BPANN, some finite element simulations were carried out. die and
punch radius, die arc radius, friction coefficient, thickness, yield
strength of sheet and strain hardening exponent were used as the
input data and the LDR as the specified output used in the training of
neural network. As a result of the specified parameters, the program
will be able to estimate the LDR for any new given condition.
Comparing FEM and BPANN results, an acceptable correlation was
found.
Abstract: This paper discusses the approach of real-time
controlling of the energy management system using the data
acquisition tool of LabVIEW. The main idea of this inspiration was
to interface the Station (PC) with the system and publish the data on
internet using LabVIEW. In this venture, controlling and switching of
3 phase AC loads are effectively and efficiently done. The phases are
also sensed through devices. In case of any failure the attached
generator starts functioning automatically. The computer sends
command to the system and system respond to the request. The
modern feature is to access and control the system world-wide using
world wide web (internet). This controlling can be done at any time
from anywhere to effectively use the energy especially in developing
countries where energy management is a big problem. In this system
totally integrated devices are used to operate via remote location.
Abstract: Blind Signature were introduced by Chaum. In this
scheme, a signer can “sign” a document without knowing the
document contain. This is particularly important in electronic voting.
CryptO-0N2 is an electronic voting protocol which is development of
CryptO-0N. During its development this protocol has not been
furnished with the requirement of blind signature, so the choice of
voters can be determined by counting center. In this paper will be
presented of implementation of blind signature using RSA algorithm.
Abstract: There are several approaches in trying to solve the
Quantitative 1Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) problem.
These approaches are based either on statistical methods or on
predictive data mining. Among the statistical methods, one should
consider regression analysis, pattern recognition (such as cluster
analysis, factor analysis and principal components analysis) or partial
least squares. Predictive data mining techniques use either neural
networks, or genetic programming, or neuro-fuzzy knowledge. These
approaches have a low explanatory capability or non at all. This
paper attempts to establish a new approach in solving QSAR
problems using descriptive data mining. This way, the relationship
between the chemical properties and the activity of a substance
would be comprehensibly modeled.
Abstract: In this research, a systematic investigation was carried out to determine the optimum conditions of HDS reactor. Moreover, a suitable model was developed for a rigorous RTO (real time optimization) loop of HDS (Hydro desulfurization) process. A systematic experimental series was designed based on CCD (Central Composite design) and carried out in the related pilot plant to tune the develop model. The designed variables in the experiments were Temperature, LHSV and pressure. However, the hydrogen over fresh feed ratio was remained constant. The ranges of these variables were respectively equal to 320-380ºC, 1- 21/hr and 50-55 bar. a power law kinetic model was also developed for our further research in the future .The rate order and activation energy , power of reactant concentration and frequency factor of this model was respectively equal to 1.4, 92.66 kJ/mol and k0=2.7*109 .
Abstract: The objective of this work was to investigate flow
properties of powdered infant formula samples. Samples were
purchased at a local pharmacy and differed in composition. Lactose
free infant formula, gluten free infant formula and infant formulas
containing dietary fibers and probiotics were tested and compared
with a regular infant formula sample which did not contain any of
these supplements. Particle size and bulk density were determined
and their influence on flow properties was discussed. There were no
significant differences in bulk densities of the samples, therefore the
connection between flow properties and bulk density could not be
determined. Lactose free infant formula showed flow properties
different to standard supplement-free sample. Gluten free infant
formula with addition of probiotic microorganisms and dietary fiber
had the narrowest particle size distribution range and exhibited the
best flow properties. All the other samples exhibited the same
tendency of decreasing compaction coefficient with increasing flow
speed, which means they all become freer flowing with higher flow
speeds.
Abstract: The new architecture for quantum cellular
automata is offered. A QCA cell includes two layers nc-Si,
divided by a dielectric. Among themselves cells are connected
by the bridge from a conductive material. The comparison is
made between this and QCA, offered earlier by C. Lent's
group.
Abstract: Mining frequent tree patterns have many useful
applications in XML mining, bioinformatics, network routing, etc.
Most of the frequent subtree mining algorithms (i.e. FREQT,
TreeMiner and CMTreeMiner) use anti-monotone property in the
phase of candidate subtree generation. However, none of these
algorithms have verified the correctness of this property in tree
structured data. In this research it is shown that anti-monotonicity
does not generally hold, when using weighed support in tree pattern
discovery. As a result, tree mining algorithms that are based on this
property would probably miss some of the valid frequent subtree
patterns in a collection of trees. In this paper, we investigate the
correctness of anti-monotone property for the problem of weighted
frequent subtree mining. In addition we propose W3-Miner, a new
algorithm for full extraction of frequent subtrees. The experimental
results confirm that W3-Miner finds some frequent subtrees that the
previously proposed algorithms are not able to discover.
Abstract: Managers as the key employees have a very important role in maintaining the workforce performance which is critical to the
construction companies- success in the future. If motivated employees start with motivated managers probably it would seem
plausible if the de-motivated ones start with de-motivated managers. This study aims to analyze the importance of motivated managers to
their successes and construction companies- successes. In this study,
a quantitative method was used and the study area was in Medan, North Sumatera. Questionnaire survey was distributed directly to
construction companies in Medan which are listed in the
Construction Services Development Board. A total of 60 managers responded and the completed questionnaires were analyzed using the
descriptive analysis. The results indicated that the respondents acknowledge the importance of motivation among themselves to the
projects and construction companies- success, implying that it is vital o maintain the motivation and good performance of the workforce.
Abstract: Checkpointing is one of the commonly used techniques to provide fault-tolerance in distributed systems so that the system can operate even if one or more components have failed. However, mobile computing systems are constrained by low bandwidth, mobility, lack of stable storage, frequent disconnections and limited battery life. Hence, checkpointing protocols having lesser number of synchronization messages and fewer checkpoints are preferred in mobile environment. There are two different approaches, although not orthogonal, to checkpoint mobile computing systems namely, time-based and index-based. Our protocol is a fusion of these two approaches, though not first of its kind. In the present exposition, an index-based checkpointing protocol has been developed, which uses time to indirectly coordinate the creation of consistent global checkpoints for mobile computing systems. The proposed algorithm is non-blocking, adaptive, and does not use any control message. Compared to other contemporary checkpointing algorithms, it is computationally more efficient because it takes lesser number of checkpoints and does not need to compute dependency relationships. A brief account of important and relevant works in both the fields, time-based and index-based, has also been included in the presentation.
Abstract: We present a new algorithm for nonlinear dimensionality reduction that consistently uses global information, and that enables understanding the intrinsic geometry of non-convex manifolds. Compared to methods that consider only local information, our method appears to be more robust to noise. Unlike most methods that incorporate global information, the proposed approach automatically handles non-convexity of the data manifold. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm and compare it to state-of-the-art methods on synthetic as well as real data.
Abstract: Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) is a popular herb used in
many regions, including Baltic countries. Dill is widely used for
flavoring foods and beverages due to its pleasant spicy aroma. The
aim of this work was to determine the best blanching method for
processing of dill prior to microwave vacuum drying based on
sensory properties, color and volatile compounds in dried product.
Two blanching mediums were used – water and steam, and for part of
samples microwave pretreatment was additionally used. Evaluation of
dried dill volatile aroma compounds, color changes and sensory
attributes was performed. Results showed that blanching significantly
influences the quality of dried dill. After evaluation of volatile aroma
compounds, color and sensory properties of microwave vacuum dried
dill, as the best method for dill pretreatment was established
blanching at 90 °C for 30 s.
Abstract: This paper introduces our first efforts of developing a
new team for RoboCup Middle Size Competition. In our robots we
have applied omni directional based mobile system with omnidirectional
vision system and fuzzy control algorithm to navigate
robots. The control architecture of MRL middle-size robots is a three
layered architecture, Planning, Sequencing, and Executing. It also
uses Blackboard system to achieve coordination among agents.
Moreover, the architecture should have minimum dependency on low
level structure and have a uniform protocol to interact with real
robot.
