Abstract: XML is becoming a de facto standard for online data exchange. Existing XML filtering techniques based on a publish/subscribe model are focused on the highly structured data marked up with XML tags. These techniques are efficient in filtering the documents of data-centric XML but are not effective in filtering the element contents of the document-centric XML. In this paper, we propose an extended XPath specification which includes a special matching character '%' used in the LIKE operation of SQL in order to solve the difficulty of writing some queries to adequately filter element contents using the previous XPath specification. We also present a novel technique for filtering a collection of document-centric XMLs, called Pfilter, which is able to exploit the extended XPath specification. We show several performance studies, efficiency and scalability using the multi-query processing time (MQPT).
Abstract: The purposes of this study are 1) to study the frequent
English writing errors of students registering the course: Reading and
Writing English for Academic Purposes II, and 2) to find out the
results of writing error correction by using coded indirect corrective
feedback and writing error treatments. Samples include 28 2nd year
English Major students, Faculty of Education, Suan Sunandha
Rajabhat University. Tool for experimental study includes the lesson
plan of the course; Reading and Writing English for Academic
Purposes II, and tool for data collection includes 4 writing tests of
short texts. The research findings disclose that frequent English
writing errors found in this course comprise 7 types of grammatical
errors, namely Fragment sentence, Subject-verb agreement, Wrong
form of verb tense, Singular or plural noun endings, Run-ons
sentence, Wrong form of verb pattern and Lack of parallel structure.
Moreover, it is found that the results of writing error correction by
using coded indirect corrective feedback and error treatment reveal
the overall reduction of the frequent English writing errors and the
increase of students’ achievement in the writing of short texts with
the significance at .05.
Abstract: One of the most important areas of knowledge management studies is knowledge sharing. Measured in terms of number of scientific articles and organization-s applications, knowledge sharing stands as an example of success in the field. This paper reviews the related papers in the context of the underlying individual behavioral variables to providea direction framework for future research and writing.
Abstract: Nowadays, computer worms, viruses and Trojan horse
become popular, and they are collectively called malware. Those
malware just spoiled computers by deleting or rewriting important
files a decade ago. However, recent malware seems to be born to earn
money. Some of malware work for collecting personal information so
that malicious people can find secret information such as password for
online banking, evidence for a scandal or contact address which relates
with the target. Moreover, relation between money and malware
becomes more complex. Many kinds of malware bear bots to get
springboards. Meanwhile, for ordinary internet users,
countermeasures against malware come up against a blank wall.
Pattern matching becomes too much waste of computer resources,
since matching tools have to deal with a lot of patterns derived from
subspecies. Virus making tools can automatically bear subspecies of
malware. Moreover, metamorphic and polymorphic malware are no
longer special. Recently there appears malware checking sites that
check contents in place of users' PC. However, there appears a new
type of malicious sites that avoids check by malware checking sites. In
this paper, existing protocols and methods related with the web are
reconsidered in terms of protection from current attacks, and new
protocol and method are indicated for the purpose of security of the
web.
Abstract: Graph rewriting-based visual model processing is a
widely used technique for model transformation. Visual model
transformations often need to follow an algorithm that requires a
strict control over the execution sequence of the transformation steps.
Therefore, in Visual Model Processors (VMPs) the execution order
of the transformation steps is crucial. This paper presents the visual
control flow support of Visual Modeling and Transformation System
(VMTS), which facilitates composing complex model
transformations of simple transformation steps and executing them.
The VMTS Visual Control Flow Language (VCFL) uses stereotyped
activity diagrams to specify control flow structures and OCL
constraints to choose between different control flow branches. This
paper introduces VCFL, discusses its termination properties and
provides an algorithm to support the termination analysis of VCFL
transformations.
Abstract: Embedded hardware simulator is a valuable computeraided
tool for embedded application development. This paper focuses
on the ARM926EJ-S MMU, builds state transition models and
formally verifies critical properties for the models. The state transition
models include loading instruction model, reading data model, and
writing data model. The properties of the models are described by
CTL specification language, and they are verified in VIS. The results
obtained in VIS demonstrate that the critical properties of MMU are
satisfied in the state transition models. The correct models can be
used to implement the MMU component in our simulator. In the
end of this paper, the experimental results show that the MMU can
successfully accomplish memory access requests from CPU.
Abstract: The application of the synchronous dynamic random
access memory (SDRAM) has gone beyond the scope of personal
computers for quite a long time. It comes into hand whenever a big
amount of low price and still high speed memory is needed. Most of
the newly developed stand alone embedded devices in the field of
image, video and sound processing take more and more use of it. The
big amount of low price memory has its trade off – the speed. In
order to take use of the full potential of the memory, an efficient
controller is needed. Efficient stands for maximum random accesses
to the memory both for reading and writing and less area after
implementation. This paper proposes a target device independent
DDR SDRAM pipelined controller and provides performance
comparison with available solutions.
Abstract: The authors present optimization parameters of rotary
positioner controller in hard disk drive servo track writing process
using coefficient diagram method; CDM. Due to estimation
parameters in PI Positioning Control System by expected ratio
method cannot meet the required specification of response
effectively, we suggest coefficient diagram method for defining
controller parameters under the requirement of the system. Finally,
the simulation results show that our proposed method can improve
the problem in tuning parameter of rotary positioner controller. It is
satisfied specification of performance of control system. Furthermore,
it is very convenient as a fast adjustment damping ratio as well as a
high speed response.
Abstract: Wikis are promoted as collaborative writing tools that
allow students to transform a text into a collective document by
information sharing and group reflection. However, despite the
promising collaborative capabilities of wikis, their pedagogical value
regarding collaborative writing is still questionable. Wiki alone
cannot make collaborative writing happen, and students do not
automatically become more active, participate, and collaborate with
others when they use wikis. To foster collaborative writing and active
involvement in wiki development there is a need for a systematic
approach to wikis. Themain goal of this paper is to propose and
evaluate a co-writing approach to the development of wikis, along
with the study of three wiki applications to report on pedagogical
implications of collaborative writing in higher education.
Abstract: MRAM technology provides a combination of fast
access time, non-volatility, data retention and endurance. While a
growing interest is given to two-terminal Magnetic Tunnel Junctions
(MTJ) based on Spin-Transfer Torque (STT) switching as the
potential candidate for a universal memory, its reliability is
dramatically decreased because of the common writing/reading path.
Three-terminal MTJ based on Spin-Orbit Torque (SOT) approach
revitalizes the hope of an ideal MRAM. It can overcome the
reliability barrier encountered in current two-terminal MTJs by
separating the reading and the writing path. In this paper, we study
two possible writing schemes for the SOT-MTJ device based on
recently fabricated samples. While the first is based on precessional
switching, the second requires the presence of permanent magnetic
field. Based on an accurate Verilog-A model, we simulate the two
writing techniques and we highlight advantages and drawbacks of
each one. Using the second technique, pioneering logic circuits based
on the three-terminal architecture of the SOT-MTJ described in this
work are under development with preliminary attractive results.
Abstract: This paper reports on an effort to address the issue of
inequality in girls- and women-s access to science, engineering and
technology (SET) education and careers through raising awareness on
SET among secondary school girls in South Africa. Girls participated
in hands-on high-tech rapid prototyping environment of a fabrication
laboratory that was aimed at stimulating creativity and innovation as
part of a Fab Kids initiative. The Fab Kids intervention is about
creating a SET pipeline as part of the Young Engineers and Scientists
of Africa Initiative. The methodology was based on a real world
situation and a hands-on approach. In the process, participants
acquired a number of skills including computer-aided design,
research skills, communication skills, teamwork skills, technical
drawing skills, writing skills and problem-solving skills. Exposure to
technology enhanced the girls- confidence in being able to handle
technology-related tasks.
Abstract: Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is a stochastic method
which has been used in various signal processing and character
recognition. This study proposes to use HMM to recognize Javanese
characters from a number of different handwritings, whereby HMM
is used to optimize the number of state and feature extraction. An
85.7 % accuracy is obtained as the best result in 16-stated vertical
model using pure HMM. This initial result is satisfactory for
prompting further research.
Abstract: To analyze the behavior of Petri nets, the accessibility
graph and Model Checking are widely used. However, if the
analyzed Petri net is unbounded then the accessibility graph becomes
infinite and Model Checking can not be used even for small Petri
nets. ECATNets [2] are a category of algebraic Petri nets. The main
feature of ECATNets is their sound and complete semantics based on
rewriting logic [8] and its language Maude [9]. ECATNets analysis
may be done by using techniques of accessibility analysis and Model
Checking defined in Maude. But, these two techniques supported by
Maude do not work also with infinite-states systems. As a category
of Petri nets, ECATNets can be unbounded and so infinite systems.
In order to know if we can apply accessibility analysis and Model
Checking of Maude to an ECATNet, we propose in this paper an
algorithm allowing the detection if the ECATNet is bounded or not.
Moreover, we propose a rewriting logic based tool implementing this
algorithm. We show that the development of this tool using the
Maude system is facilitated thanks to the reflectivity of the rewriting
logic. Indeed, the self-interpretation of this logic allows us both the
modelling of an ECATNet and acting on it.
Abstract: Most file systems overwrite modified file data and
metadata in their original locations, while the Log-structured File
System (LFS) dynamically relocates them to other locations. We
design and implement the Evergreen file system that can select
between overwriting or relocation for each block of a file or metadata.
Therefore, the Evergreen file system can achieve superior write
performance by sequentializing write requests (similar to LFS-style
relocation) when space utilization is low and overwriting when
utilization is high. Another challenging issue is identifying
performance benefits of LFS-style relocation over overwriting on a
newly introduced SSD (Solid State Drive) which has only
Flash-memory chips and control circuits without mechanical parts.
Our experimental results measured on a SSD show that relocation
outperforms overwriting when space utilization is below 80% and vice
versa.
Abstract: Transliteration is frequently used especially in writing geographic denominations, personal names (onyms) etc. Proper names (onyms) of all languages must sound similarly in translated works as well as in scientific projects and works written in mother tongue, because we can get introduced with the nation, its history, culture, traditions and other spiritual values through the onyms of that nation. Therefore it is necessary to systematize the different transliterations of onyms of foreign languages. This paper is dedicated to the problem of making the project of transliterating Kazakh onyms into Arabic. In order to achieve this goal we use scientific or practical types of transliteration. Because in this type of transliteration provides easy reading writing source language's texts in the target language without any diacritical symbols, it is limited by the target language's alphabetic system.
Abstract: This study explores perceptions of English as a Foreign
Language (EFL) learners on using computer mediated communication
technology in their learner of English. The data consists of
observations of both synchronous and asynchronous communication
participants engaged in for over a period of 4 months, which included
online, and offline communication protocols, open-ended interviews
and reflection papers composed by participants.
Content analysis of interview data and the written documents listed
above, as well as, member check and triangulation techniques are the
major data analysis strategies. The findings suggest that participants
generally do not benefit from computer-mediated communication in
terms of its effect in learning a foreign language. Participants regarded
the nature of CMC as artificial, or pseudo communication that did not
aid their authentic communicational skills in English. The results of
this study sheds lights on insufficient and inconclusive findings, which
most quantitative CMC studies previously generated.
Abstract: Peer review is an activity where students review their
classmates- writing and then evaluate the content, development, unity
and organization. Studies have shown that peer review activities
benefit both the reviewer and the writer in developing their reading
and writing skills. Furthermore, peer review activities may also
enhance students- soft skills. This study was conducted to find out the
benefits of peer review activity in a technical writing class based on
engineering students- perceptions. The study also highlights how
these benefits could improve the students- soft skills. A set of
questionnaire was given to 200 undergraduate students of a technical
writing course. The results of the study indicate that the activity could
help improve their critical thinking skills, written and oral
communication skills, as well as team work. This paper further
discusses how the implications of these benefits could help enhance
students- soft skills.
Abstract: Walking as a type of non-motorized transportation has
various social, economical and environmental privileges. Also, today
different aspects of sustainable development have been emphasized
and promotion of sustainable transportation modes has been
considered according to this approach. Therefore, the objective of
this research is exploring the circumstance of relationship between
walking and sustainable urban transportation. For writing this article,
the most important resources related to the traits of walking have
been surveyed via a documentary method and after explaining the
concept of sustainable transportation and its indicators, benefiting
from the viewpoints of transportation experts of Tehran, as the capital
and greatest city of Iran, different modes of urban transportation have
been compared in proportion to each criterion and to each other and
have been analyzed according to AHP method. The results of this
study indicate that walking is the most sustainable mode of inner city
transportation.
Abstract: In a handwriting recognition problem, characters can
be represented using chain codes. The main problem in representing
characters using chain code is optimizing the length of the chain
code. This paper proposes to use randomized algorithm to minimize
the length of Freeman Chain Codes (FCC) generated from isolated
handwritten characters. Feedforward neural network is used in the
classification stage to recognize the image characters. Our test results
show that by applying the proposed model, we reached a relatively
high accuracy for the problem of isolated handwritten when tested on
NIST database.
Abstract: The ARMrayan Multimedia Mobile CMS (Content
Management System) is the first mobile CMS that gives the
opportunity to users for creating multimedia J2ME mobile
applications with their desired content, design and logo; simply,
without any need for writing even a line of code. The low-level
programming and compatibility problems of the J2ME, along with
UI designing difficulties, makes it hard for most people –even
programmers- to broadcast their content to the widespread mobile
phones used by nearly all people. This system provides user-friendly,
PC-based tools for creating a tree index of pages and inserting
multiple multimedia contents (e.g. sound, video and picture) in each
page for creating a J2ME mobile application. The output is a standalone
Java mobile application that has a user interface, shows texts
and pictures and plays music and videos regardless of the type of
devices used as long as the devices support the J2ME platform.
Bitmap fonts have also been used thus Middle Eastern languages can
be easily supported on all mobile phone devices. We omitted
programming concepts for users in order to simplify multimedia
content-oriented mobile applictaion designing for use in educational,
cultural or marketing centers. Ordinary operators can now create a
variety of multimedia mobile applications such as tutorials,
catalogues, books, and guides in minutes rather than months.
Simplicity and power has been the goal of this CMS. In this paper,
we present the software engineered-designed concepts of the
ARMrayan MCMS along with the implementation challenges faces
and solutions adapted.
