Abstract: In this research work, neural networks were applied to
classify two types of hip joint implants based on the relative hip joint
implant side speed and three components of each ground reaction
force. The condition of walking gait at normal velocity was used and
carried out with each of the two hip joint implants assessed. Ground
reaction forces’ kinetic temporal changes were considered in the first
approach followed but discarded in the second one. Ground reaction
force components were obtained from eighteen patients under such
gait condition, half of which had a hip implant type I-II, whilst the
other half had the hip implant, defined as type III by Orthoload®.
After pre-processing raw gait kinetic data and selecting the time
frames needed for the analysis, the ground reaction force components
were used to train a MLP neural network, which learnt to distinguish
the two hip joint implants in the abovementioned condition. Further
to training, unknown hip implant side and ground reaction force
components were presented to the neural networks, which assigned
those features into the right class with a reasonably high accuracy for
the hip implant type I-II and the type III. The results suggest that
neural networks could be successfully applied in the performance
assessment of hip joint implants.
Abstract: We present a dedicated video-based monitoring
system for quantification of patient’s attention to visual feedback
during robot assisted gait rehabilitation. Two different approaches for
eye gaze and head pose tracking are tested and compared. Several
metrics for assessment of patient’s attention are also presented.
Experimental results with healthy volunteers demonstrate that
unobtrusive video-based gaze tracking during the robot-assisted gait
rehabilitation is possible and is sufficiently robust for quantification
of patient’s attention and assessment of compliance with the
rehabilitation therapy.
Abstract: When insulation and rehabilitation of structures is important to use quality building materials with high utility value. One potentially interesting and promising groups of construction materials in this area are advanced, thermally insulating plaster silicate based. With the present trend reduction of energy consumption of building structures and reducing CO2 emissions to be developed capillary-active materials that are characterized by their low density, low thermal conductivity while maintaining good mechanical properties.
The paper describes the results of research activities aimed at the development of thermal insulating and rehabilitation material ongoing at the Technical University in Brno, Faculty of Civil Engineering. The achieved results of this development will be the basis for subsequent experimental analysis of the influence of thermal and moisture loads developed on these materials.
Abstract: It was expected to benefit patient with hemiparesis after stroke by extensive arm rehabilitation, to partially regain forearm and hand function. This paper propose a robotic rehabilitation arm in assisting the hemiparetic patient to learn new ways of using and moving their weak arms. In this study, the robotic arm was driven by a somatosensory stimulated brain computer interface (BCI), which is a new modality BCI. The use of somatosensory stimulation is not only an input for BCI, but also a electrical stimulation for treatment of hemiparesis to strengthen the arm and improve its range of motion. A trial of this robotic rehabilitation arm was performed in a stroke patient with pure motor hemiparesis. The initial trial showed a promising result from the patient with great motivation and function improvement. It suggests that robotic rehabilitation arm driven by somatosensory BCI can enhance the rehabilitation performance and progress for hemiparetic patients after stroke.
Abstract: Non-invasive Brain Computer Interface like Electroencephalography (EEG) which directly taps neurological signals, is being widely explored these days to connect paralytic patients/elderly with the external environment. However, in India the research is confined to laboratory settings and is not reaching the mass for rehabilitation purposes. An attempt has been made in this paper to analyze real time acquired EEG signal using cost effective and portable headset unit EMOTIV. Signal processing of real time acquired EEG is done using EEGLAB in MATLAB and EDF Browser application software platforms. Independent Component Analysis algorithm of EEGLAB is explored to identify deliberate eye blink in the attained neural signal. Time Frequency transforms and Data statistics obtained using EEGLAB along with component activation results of EDF browser clearly indicate voluntary eye blink in AF3 channel. The spectral analysis indicates dominant frequency component at 1.536000Hz representing the delta wave component of EEG during voluntary eye blink action. An algorithm is further designed to generate an active high signal based on thoughtful eye blink that can be used for plethora of control applications for rehabilitation.
Abstract: Background: Occupational standing is associated with low back pain (LBP) development. Yet, trunk and gluteus-medius muscles’ fatigability has not been extensively studied during occupational standing. This study examined and correlated the rectus abdominus (RA), erector-spinae (ES), external oblique (EO), and gluteus-medius (GM) muscles’ fatigability on both sides while standing in a confined area for 30min Methods: Median frequency EMG data were collected from 15 female clinical instructors with chronic LBP (group A) and 15 asymptomatic controls (group B) (mean age 29.53±2.4 vs 29.07±2.4years, weight 63.6±7 vs 60±7.8kg, and height 162.73±4 vs 162.8±6cm respectively) using a spectrum analysis program. Abstract: Ageing population is a global trend; therefore the need of care service has been increasing dramatically. There are three basic forms of service delivered to the elderly: institution, community, and home. Particularly, the institutional service can be seen as an extension of medical service. The nursing home or so-called care home which is equipped with professional staff and facilities can provide a variety of service including rehabilitation service, short-term care, and long term care. Similar to hospital and other health care service, care home service do need to provide quality and cost-effective service to satisfy the dwellers. The main purpose of this paper is to show how lean thinking and service innovation can be applied to care home operation. The issues and key factors of implementing lean practice are discussed.
Abstract: Urban planning is the need of the hour in a rapidly developing county like India. In essence, urban planning enhances the quality of land at a reasonable cost. Naya (New) Raipur is the new planned capital of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, and is one of India’s few planned cities. Over the next decade it will drastically change the landscape of the state of Chhattisgarh. This new planned development is quintessential in growing this backward region and providing for future infrastructure. Key questions that arise are: How are people living in the surrounding region of New Raipur affected by its development? Are the affected people satisfied with compensation and rehabilitation that has been provided by the New Raipur Development Authority? To answer these questions, field research study in the form of questionnaires, interviews and site visits was conducted. To summarize the findings, while a majority of the surveyed population was dissatisfied with the rehabilitation and compensation provided by the New Raipur Development Authority, they were very positive about the success of the new development. Most thought that the new city would help their careers, improve job opportunities, improve prospects for their future generations, and benefit society as a whole.
To improve rehabilitation schemes for the future, the reasons for the negative sentiment brewing amongst the villagers regarding the monetary compensation was investigated. Most villagers deemed the monetary compensation to be lacking as they had squandered their financial windfall already. With numerous interviews and site visits, it was discovered that the lump sum form of monetary compensation was to blame. With a huge sum of money received at once and a lack of financial education, many villagers squandered this newly gained money on unnecessary purchases such as alcohol and expensive vehicles without investing for the long run in farmland and education for their children. One recommendation proposed to the New Raipur Development Authority (NRDA) for future monetary compensation design in times of rehabilitating people was to provide payments in installments rather than lump sums and educate the people about investing the compensation money wisely. This would save them from wasting money they receive and the ensuing dissatisfaction of squandering that money.
Abstract: Background: With the perceived pain and poor function experienced following knee arthroplasty, patients usually feel un-satisfied. Yet, a controversy still persists on the appropriate operative technique that doesn’t affect proprioception much.
Purpose: This study compared the effects of Cruciate Retaining (CR) and Posterior Stabilized (PS) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and uni-compartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) on dynamic balance, pain and functional performance following rehabilitation.
Methods: Fifteen patients with CRTKA (group I), fifteen with PSTKA (group II), fifteen with UKA (group III) and fifteen indicated for arthroplasty but weren’t operated on yet (group IV) participated in the study. The mean age was 54.53±3.44, 55.13±3.48, 52.8±1.93 and 55.33±2.32 years and BMI 35.7±3.03, 35.7±1.99, 35.6±1.88 and 35.73±1.03 kg/m2 for group I, II, III and IV respectively. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS), WOMAC pain subscale and Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) and Stair-Climbing (SC) tests were used for assessment. Assessments were conducted four and eight weeks pre- and post-operatively with the control group being assessed at the same time intervals. The post-operative rehabilitation involved hospitalization (1st week), home-based (2nd-4th weeks), and outpatient clinic (5th-8th weeks) programs.
Results: The Mixed design MANOVA revealed that group III had significantly higher BBS scores, and lower pain scores and TUG and SC time than groups I and II four and eight weeks post-operatively. In addition, group I had significantly lower pain scores and SC time compared with group II eight weeks post-operatively. Moreover, the BBS scores increased significantly and the pain scores and TUG and SC time decreased significantly eight weeks post-operatively compared with the three other assessments in group I, II and III with the opposite being true four weeks post-operatively.
Interpretation/Conclusion: CRTKA is preferable to PSTKA with UKA being generally superior to TKA, possibly due to the preserved human proprioceptors in the un-excised compartmental articular surface.
Abstract: Steel bracing members are widely used in steel
structures to reduce lateral displacement and dissipate energy during
earthquake motions. Concentric steel bracing provide an excellent
approach for strengthening and stiffening steel buildings. Using these
braces the designer can hardly adjust the stiffness together with
ductility as needed because of buckling of braces in compression. In
this study the use of SMA bracing and steel bracing (Mega) utilized
in steel frames are investigated. The effectiveness of these two
systems in rehabilitating a mid-rise eight-storey steel frames were
examined using time-history nonlinear analysis utilizing seismostruct
software. Results show that both systems improve the strength and
stiffness of the original structure but due to excellent behavior of
SMA in nonlinear phase and under compressive forces this system
shows much better performance than the rehabilitation system of
Mega bracing.
Abstract: In recent years, Japanese society has been aging, engendering a labor shortage of young workers. Robots are therefore expected to perform tasks such as rehabilitation, nursing elderly people, and day-to-day work support for elderly people. The pneumatic balloon actuator is a rubber artificial muscle developed for use in a robot hand in such environments. This actuator has a long stroke and a high power-to-weight ratio compared with the present pneumatic artificial muscle. Moreover, the dynamic characteristics of this actuator resemble those of human muscle. This study evaluated characteristics of force control of balloon actuator using a predictive functional control (PFC) system with disturbance observer. The predictive functional control is a model-based predictive control (MPC) scheme that predicts the future outputs of the actual plants over the prediction horizon and computes the control effort over the control horizon at every sampling instance. For this study, a 1-link finger system using a pneumatic balloon actuator is developed. Then experiments of PFC control with disturbance observer are performed. These experiments demonstrate the feasibility of its control of a pneumatic balloon actuator for a robot hand.
Abstract: In this article, a study of employee’s opinion to the factors that affect to the flood preventive and the corrective action plan in an electronic industry at the Sharp Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. has been investigated. The surveys data of 175 workers and supervisors have, however, been selected for data analysis. The results is shown that the employees emphasize about the needs in a subsidy at the time of disaster at high levels of 77.8%, as the plan focusing on flood prevention of the rehabilitation equipment is valued at the intermediate level, which is 79.8%. Demonstration of the hypothesis has found that the different education levels has thus been affected to the needs factor at the flood disaster time. Moreover, most respondents give priority to flood disaster risk management factor. Consequently, we found that the flood prevention plan is valued at high level, especially on information monitoring, which is 93.4% for the supervisor item. The respondents largely assume that the flood will have impacts on the industry, up to 80%, thus to focus on flood management plans is enormous.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to survey the incidence, prevalence, types and associated impairments of CP in children at the Tripoli children hospital (T.C.H). The study covered all the cases the hospital had diagnosed in the period between (1.1.2009) and (31.12.2010), during which 38 cases of ages between 2 months to 3 years were diagnosed in the mentioned period. The incidence of CP was (17.42 per one thousand) out of (2143) of different neurological cases and came with a result of 23 cases of spastic CP which represented about (60.53%) out of the total number of cases, and the most associated impairment is convulsion. Medical information was collected from the patients’ files at the registration department from the neurology department. The data has been collected by a questionnaire, which had been set to finely organize the patient’s files.
Abstract: The myoelectric signal (MES) is one of the Biosignals
utilized in helping humans to control equipments. Recent approaches
in MES classification to control prosthetic devices employing pattern
recognition techniques revealed two problems, first, the classification
performance of the system starts degrading when the number of
motion classes to be classified increases, second, in order to solve the
first problem, additional complicated methods were utilized which
increase the computational cost of a multifunction myoelectric
control system. In an effort to solve these problems and to achieve a
feasible design for real time implementation with high overall
accuracy, this paper presents a new method for feature extraction in
MES recognition systems. The method works by extracting features
using Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) applied on the MES from
multiple channels, and then employs Fuzzy c-means (FCM)
algorithm to generate a measure that judges on features suitability for
classification. Finally, Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is
utilized to reduce the size of the data before computing the
classification accuracy with a multilayer perceptron neural network.
The proposed system produces powerful classification results (99%
accuracy) by using only a small portion of the original feature set.
Abstract: Haptics has been used extensively in many applications especially in human machine interaction and virtual reality systems. Haptic technology allows user to perceive virtual reality as in real world. However, commercially available haptic devices are expensive and may not be suitable for educational purpose. This paper describes the design and development of a low cost haptic knob, with only one degree of freedom, for use in rehabilitation or training hand pronation and supination. End-effectors can be changed to suit different applications or variation in hand sizes and hand orientation.
Abstract: This paper discusses the issue of tribal development,
displacement, rehabilitation and resettlement policies, and
implementation in the agency (scheduled / tribal) areas of the West
Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh State, India. This study is based
on action anthropological approach, conducted among the displaced
tribal communities i.e. Konda Reddis and Nayakapods of this region,
under the 'Kovvada Reservoir' Project. These groups are
traditionally shifting cultivators and popularly known as the
Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs) in the government records. This
paper also focuses on the issues of tribal displacement and land
alienation due to construction of the Kovvada reservoir, without
proper rehabilitation and resettlement, although there are well
defined guidelines, procedures and norms for the rehabilitation of
Project Affected Persons (PAPs). It is necessary to begin with, to
provide an overview of the issues in tribal development and policies
related to displacement and rehabilitation in the Indian context as a
background to the Kovvada Reservoir Project, the subject of this
study.
Abstract: According to the European laws, there is the
possibility of reusing the washing wastes for the environmental
requalification of quarry lakes. The paper deals with the
hydrogeological aspects involved in this possibility, as the
introduction of finest wastes in the quarry lakes can generate
alterations of the hydrogeological setting of the area, and problems
for the future accessibility of the zone. To evaluate the
hydrogeological compatibility of the washing wastes reuse in quarry
lakes a groundwater numerical model was carried out, pointing out
both the hydrogeological feasibility of this intervention and some
guide lines for its optimization, in terms of inflow point with regard
the groundwater flow direction and loss of volume in the quarry lake.
Abstract: The paper is concerned with the state examination as
well as the problems during the post surgical (orthopedic)
rehabilitation of the knee and ankle joint. An observation of the
current appliances for a passive rehabilitation devices is presented.
The major necessary and basic features of the intelligent
rehabilitation devices are considered. An approach for a new
intelligent appliance is suggested. The main advantages of the device
are: both active as well as passive rehabilitation of the patient based
on the human - patient reactions and a real time feedback. The basic
components: controller; electrical motor; encoder, force – torque
sensor are discussed in details. The main modes of operation of the
device are considered.
Abstract: Within dental-guided surgery, there has been a lack
of analytical methods for optimizing the treatment of the
rehabilitation concepts regarding geometrical variation. The purpose
of this study is to find the source of the greatest geometrical variation
contributor and sensitivity contributor with the help of virtual
variation simulation of a dental drill- and implant-guided surgery
process using a methodical approach. It is believed that lower
geometrical variation will lead to better patient security and higher
quality of dental drill- and implant-guided surgeries. It was found
that the origin of the greatest contributor to the most variation, and
hence where the foci should be set, in order to minimize geometrical
variation was in the assembly category (surgery). This was also the
category that was the most sensitive for geometrical variation.
Abstract: Young patients suffering from Cerebral Palsy are
facing difficult choices concerning heavy surgeries. Diagnosis settled
by surgeons can be complex and on the other hand decision for
patient about getting or not such a surgery involves important
reflection effort. Proposed software combining prediction for
surgeries and post surgery kinematic values, and from 3D model
representing the patient is an innovative tool helpful for both patients
and medicine professionals. Beginning with analysis and
classification of kinematics values from Data Base extracted from
gait analysis in 3 separated clusters, it is possible to determine close
similarity between patients. Prediction surgery best adapted to
improve a patient gait is then determined by operating a suitable
preconditioned neural network. Finally, patient 3D modeling based
on kinematic values analysis, is animated thanks to post surgery
kinematic vectors characterizing the closest patient selected from
patients clustering.
