Abstract: In this numerical study, natural convection of Cu–water nanofluid in a cavity submitted to different heating modes on its vertical walls is analyzed. Maxwell-Garnetts (MG) and Brinkman models have been utilized for calculating the effective thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of nanofluid, respectively. Influences of Rayleigh number (Ra = 103−106), nanoparticle volume concentration (f = 0-0.04) and Hartmann number (Ha = 0-90) on the flow and heat transfer characteristics have been examined. The results indicate that the Hartmann number influences the heat transfer at Ra = 106 more than other Raleigh numbers, as the least effect is observed at Ra = 103. Moreover, the results show that the solid volume fraction has a significant influence on heat transfer, depending on the value of Hartmann, heat generation or absorption coefficient and Rayleigh numbers.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to develop a theoretical model to study the dynamic thermal behavior of a flat plate solar collector integrated with a phase change material (PCM). The PCM acted as a heat source for the solar system during low intensity solar radiation and night. The energy balance equations for the various components of the collector as well as for the PCM were formulated and numerically solved using MATLAB computational program. The effect of natural convection on heat during the melting process was taken into account by using an effective thermal conductivity. The model was used to investigate the effect of inlet water temperature, water mass flow rate, and PCM thickness on the outlet water temperature and the melt fraction during charging and discharging modes. A comparison with a collector without PCM was made. Results showed that charging and discharging processes of PCM have six stages. The adding of PCM caused a decrease in temperature during charge and an increase during discharge. The rise was most enhanced for higher inlet water temperature, PCM thickness and for lower mass flow rate. Analysis indicated that the complete melting time was shorter than the solidification time due to the high heat transfer coefficient during melting. The increases in PCM height and mass flow rate were not linear with the melting and solidification times.
Abstract: In this study, it was aimed to determine the thermophysical properties of two different magnetic nanofluids (NiFe2O4-water and CoFe2O4-water). Magnetic nanoparticles were dispersed into the pure water at different volume fractions from 0 vol.% to 4 vol.%. The measurements were performed in the temperature range of 15 oC-55 oC. In order to get better idea on the temperature dependent thermophysical properties of magnetic nanofluids (MNFs), viscosity and thermal conductivity measurements were made. SEM images of both NiFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were used in order to confirm the average dimensions. The measurements showed that the thermal conductivity of MNFs increased with an increase in the volume fraction as well as viscosity. Increase in the temperature of both MNFs resulted in an increase in the thermal conductivity and a decrease in the viscosity. Based on the measured data, the correlations for both the viscosity and the thermal conductivity were presented with respect to solid volume ratio and temperature. Effective thermal conductivity of the prepared MNFs was also calculated. The results indicated that water based NiFe2O4 nanofluid had higher thermal conductivity than that of the CoFe2O4. Once the viscosity values of both MNFs were compared, almost no difference was observed.
Abstract: When sinters are filled into the cooler from the sintering machine, and the non-uniform distribution of the sinters leads to uneven cooling. This causes the temperature difference of the sinters leaving the cooler to be so large that it results in the conveyors being deformed by the heat. The present work applies CFD method to investigate the thermo flowfield phenomena in a sinter cooler by the Porous Media Model. Using the obtained experimental data to simulate porosity (Ε), permeability (κ), inertial coefficient (F), specific heat (Cp) and effective thermal conductivity (keff) of the sinter packed beds. The physical model is a similar geometry whose Darcy numbers (Da) are similar to the sinter cooler. Using the Cooling Index (CI) and Uniformity Index (UI) to analyze the thermo flowfield in the sinter packed bed obtains the cooling performance of the sinter cooler.

Abstract: To practically apply vacuum insulation panels (VIPs)
to buildings or home appliances, VIPs have demanded long-term
lifespan with outstanding insulation performance. Service lives of
VIPs enveloped with Al-foil and three-layer Al-metallized envelope
are calculated. For Al-foil envelope, the service life is longer but edge
conduction is too large compared with the Al-metallized envelope. To
increase service life even more, the proposed double enveloping
method and metal-barrier-added enveloping method are further
analyzed. The service lives of the VIP to employ two enveloping
methods are calculated. Also, pressure increase and thermal insulation
performance characteristics are investigated. For the metalbarrier-
added enveloping method, effective thermal conductivity
increase with time is close to that of Al-foil envelope, especially, for
getter-inserted VIPs. For double enveloping method, if water vapor is
perfectly adsorbed, the effect of service life enhancement becomes
much greater. From these methods, the VIP can be guaranteed for
service life of more than 20 years.
Abstract: The effect of waste ceramic powder on the thermal properties of lime-pozzolana composites is investigated. At first, the measurements of effective thermal conductivity of lime-pozzolan composites are performed in dependence on moisture content from the dry state to fully water saturated state using a pulse method. Then, the obtained data are analyzed using two different homogenization techniques, namely the Lichtenecker’s and Dobson’s formulas, taking into account Wiener’s and Hashin/Shtrikman bounds.
Abstract: A high thermal dissipation performance polyethylene terephthalate heat pipe has been fabricated and tested in this research. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is used as the container material instead of copper. Copper mesh and methanol are sealed in the middle of two PET films as the wick structure and working fluid. Although the thermal conductivity of PET (0.15-0.24 W/m·K) is much smaller than copper (401 W/m·K), the experiment results reveal that the PET heat pipe can reach a minimum thermal resistance of 0.146 (oC/W) and maximum effective thermal conductivity of 18,310 (W/m·K) with 36.9 vol% at 26 W input power. However, when the input power is larger than 30 W, the laminated PET will debond due to the high vapor pressure of methanol.
Abstract: The LHP is a two-phase device with extremely high
effective thermal conductivity that utilizes the thermodynamic
pressure difference to circulate a cooling fluid. A thermodynamics
analytical model is developed to explore different parameters effects
on a Loop Heat Pipe (LHP).. The effects of pipe length, pipe
diameter, condenser temperature, and heat load are reported. As pipe
length increases and/or pipe diameter decreases, a higher temperature
is expected in the evaporator.
Abstract: Thermal conductivity is an important characteristic of
a nanofluid in laminar flow heat transfer. This paper presents an
improved model for the prediction of the effective thermal
conductivity of nanofluids based on dimensionless groups. The
model expresses the thermal conductivity of a nanofluid as a function
of the thermal conductivity of the solid and liquid, their volume
fractions and particle size. The proposed model includes a parameter
which accounts for the interfacial shell, brownian motion, and
aggregation of particle. The validation of the model is verified by
applying the results obtained by the experiments of Tio2-water and
Al2o3-water nanofluids.
Abstract: Heat pipes are two-phase heat transfer devices with
high effective thermal conductivity. Due to the high heat transport
capacity, heat exchanger with heat pipes has become much smaller
than traditional heat exchangers in handling high heat fluxes. With
the working fluid in a heat pipe, heat can be absorbed on the
evaporator region and transported to the condenser region where the
vapour condenses releasing the heat to the cooling media. Heat pipe
technology has found increasing applications in enhancing the
thermal performance of heat exchangers in microelectranics, energy
saving in HVAC systems for operating rooms, surgery centers, hotels,
cleanrooms etc, temperature regulation systems for the human body
and other industrial sectors. Development activity in heat pipe and
thermosyphon technology in asia in recent years is surveyed. Some
new results obtained in Australia and other countries are also
included.
Abstract: A measurement apparatus is designed and fabricated to
measure the effective thermal conductivity (keff) of a VIP (vacuum
insulation panel) core specimen under various vacuum states and
external loads. The apparatus consists of part for measuring keff, and
parts for controlling external load and vacuum condition. Uncertainty
of the apparatus is validated by measuring the standard reference
material and comparing with commercial devices with VIP samples.
Assessed uncertainty is maximum 2.5 % in case of the standard
reference material, 10 % in case of VIP samples. Using the apparatus,
keff of glass paper under various vacuum levels is examined.
Abstract: The effect of streamwise conduction on the thermal
characteristics of forced convection for nanofluidic flow in
rectangular microchannel heat sinks under isothermal wall has been
investigated. By applying the fin approach, models with and without
streamwise conduction term in the energy equation were developed
for hydrodynamically and thermally fully-developed flow. These two
models were solved to obtain closed form analytical solutions for the
nanofluid and solid wall temperature distributions and the analysis
emphasized details of the variations induced by the streamwise
conduction on the nanofluid heat transport characteristics. The effects
of the Peclet number, nanoparticle volume fraction, thermal
conductivity ratio on the thermal characteristics of forced convection
in microchannel heat sinks are analyzed. Due to the anomalous
increase in the effective thermal conductivity of nanofluid compared
to its base fluid, the effect of streamwise conduction is expected to be
more significant. This study reveals the significance of the effect of
streamwise conduction under certain conditions of which the
streamwise conduction should not be neglected in the forced
convective heat transfer analysis of microchannel heat sinks.
Abstract: Radial flow reactor was focused for large scale
methanol synthesis and in which the heat transfer type was cross-flow.
The effects of operating conditions including the reactor inlet air
temperature, the heating pipe temperature and the air flow rate on the
cross-flow heat transfer was investigated and the results showed that
the temperature profile of the area in front of the heating pipe was
slightly affected by all the operating conditions. The main area whose
temperature profile was influenced was the area behind the heating
pipe. The heat transfer direction according to the air flow directions. In
order to provide the basis for radial flow reactor design calculation, the
dimensionless number group method was used for data fitting of the
bed effective thermal conductivity and the wall heat transfer
coefficient which was calculated by the mathematical model with the
product of Reynolds number and Prandtl number. The comparison of
experimental data and calculated value showed that the calculated
value fit the experimental data very well and the formulas could be
used for reactor designing calculation.
