Abstract: This paper presents a new approach for the protection
of Thyristor-Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) line using
Support Vector Machine (SVM). One SVM is trained for fault
classification and another for section identification. This method use
three phase current measurement that results in better speed and
accuracy than other SVM based methods which used single phase
current measurement. This makes it suitable for real-time protection.
The method was tested on 10,000 data instances with a very wide
variation in system conditions such as compensation level, source
impedance, location of fault, fault inception angle, load angle at
source bus and fault resistance. The proposed method requires only
local current measurement.
Abstract: Real-time measurement of applied forces, like tension, compression, torsion, and bending moment, identifies the transferred energies being applied to the bottomhole assembly (BHA). These forces are highly detrimental to measurement/logging-while-drilling tools and downhole equipment. Real-time measurement of the dynamic downhole behavior, including weight, torque, bending on bit, and vibration, establishes a real-time feedback loop between the downhole drilling system and drilling team at the surface. This paper describes the numerical analysis of the strain data acquired by the measurement tool at different locations on the strain pockets. The strain values obtained by FEA for various loading conditions (tension, compression, torque, and bending moment) are compared against experimental results obtained from an identical experimental setup. Numerical analyses results agree with experimental data within 8% and, therefore, substantiate and validate the FEA model. This FEA model can be used to analyze the combined loading conditions that reflect the actual drilling environment.
Abstract: There-s a lack in understanding the indoor climate of Malaysian residential. The assumption of traditional house could
provide the best indoor environment is too good to be true. This research is to understand indoor environment in three types of
Malaysian residential and thermo recorder TR72Ui were placed in
indoor spaces for measurement. There are huge differences of indoor
environment between housing types, and building material helps to control indoor climate. Traditional house indoor climate was similar to
the outdoor. Temperature in the bedroom of terrace and town houses were slightly higher than the living room. Indoor temperature was 2oC
lower in the rainy season than the hot season. It was hard to control
indoor humidity level in traditional house compared with terrace and
town house. As for conclusion, town house provides the best thermal
environment to the building occupants and can be improved with good
roof insulation.
Abstract: This paper is aimed to give an illustration on the
application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) as a tool to assess
Quality Management (QM) efficiency. A variant of DEA, slack based
measure (SBM) is used for this purpose. From this study, it is found
that DEA is suitable to measure QM efficiency and give
improvement suggestions to the inefficient QM.
Abstract: This paper presents how the real-time chatter
prevention can be realized by feedback of acoustic cutting signal, and
the efficacy of the proposed adaptive spindle speed tuning algorithm is
verified by intensive experimental simulations. A pair of
microphones, perpendicular to each other, is used to acquire the
acoustic cutting signal resulting from milling chatter. A real-time
feedback control loop is constructed for spindle speed compensation
so that the milling process can be ensured to be within the stability
zone of stability lobe diagram. Acoustic Chatter Signal Index (ACSI)
and Spindle Speed Compensation Strategy (SSCS) are proposed to
quantify the acoustic signal and actively tune the spindle speed
respectively. By converting the acoustic feedback signal into ACSI,
an appropriate Spindle Speed Compensation Rate (SSCR) can be
determined by SSCS based on real-time chatter level or ACSI.
Accordingly, the compensation command, referred to as Added-On
Voltage (AOV), is applied to increase/decrease the spindle motor
speed. By inspection on the precision and quality of the workpiece
surface after milling, the efficacy of the real-time chatter prevention
strategy via acoustic signal feedback is further assured.
Abstract: In the present work, an attempt has been made to
understand the feasibility of using UHF technique for identification
of any corona discharges/ arcing in insulating material due to water
droplets. The sensors of broadband type are useful for identification
of such discharges. It is realised that arcing initiated by liquid droplet
radiates UHF signals in the entire bandwidth up to 2 GHz. The
frequency content of the UHF signal generated due to corona/arcing
is not much varied in epoxy nanocomposites with different weight
percentage of clay content. The exfoliated/intercalated properties
were analysed through TEM studies. It is realized that corona
initiated discharges are of intermittent process. The hydrophobicity
of the material characterized through contact angle measurement. It
is realized that low Wt % of nanoclay content in epoxy resin reduces
the surface carbonization due to arcing/corona discharges. The results
of the study with gamma irradiated specimen indicates that contact
angle, discharge inception time and evaporation time of the liquid are
much lower than the virgin epoxy nanocomposite material.
Abstract: This paper investigates vortex shedding processes
occurring at the end of a stack of parallel plates, due to an oscillating
flow induced by an acoustic standing wave within an acoustic
resonator. Here, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is used to quantify
the vortex shedding processes within an acoustic cycle
phase-by-phase, in particular during the “ejection" of the fluid out of
the stack. Standard hot-wire anemometry measurement is also applied
to detect the velocity fluctuations near the end of the stack.
Combination of these two measurement techniques allowed a detailed
analysis of the vortex shedding phenomena. The results obtained show
that, as the Reynolds number varies (by varying the plate thickness
and drive ratio), different flow patterns of vortex shedding are
observed by the PIV measurement. On the other hand, the
time-dependent hot-wire measurements allow obtaining detailed
frequency spectra of the velocity signal, used for calculating
characteristic Strouhal numbers. The impact of the plate thickness and
the Reynolds number on the vortex shedding pattern has been
discussed. Furthermore, a detailed map of the relationship between the
Strouhal number and Reynolds number has been obtained and
discussed.
Abstract: The electrolyte stirring method of anodization etching
process for manufacturing porous silicon (PS) is reported in this work.
Two experimental setups of nature air stirring (PS-ASM) and
electrolyte stirring (PS-ESM) are employed to clarify the influence of
stirring mechanisms on electrochemical etching process. Compared to
traditional fabrication without any stirring apparatus (PS-TM), a large
plateau region of PS surface structure is obtained from samples with
both stirring methods by the 3D-profiler measurement. Moreover, the
light emission response is also improved by both proposed electrolyte
stirring methods due to the cycling force in electrolyte could
effectively enhance etch-carrier distribution while the electrochemical
etching process is made. According to the analysis of statistical
calculation of photoluminescence (PL) intensity, lower standard
deviations are obtained from PS-samples with studied stirring methods,
i.e. the uniformity of PL-intensity is effectively improved. The
calculated deviations of PL-intensity are 93.2, 74.5 and 64,
respectively, for PS-TM, PS-ASM and PS-ESM.
Abstract: In this paper, the detection of a fault in the Global Positioning System (GPS) measurement is addressed. The class of faults considered is a bias in the GPS pseudorange measurements. This bias is modeled as an unknown constant. The fault could be the result of a receiver fault or signal fault such as multipath error. A bias bank is constructed based on set of possible fault hypotheses. Initially, there is equal probability of occurrence for any of the biases in the bank. Subsequently, as the measurements are processed, the probability of occurrence for each of the biases is sequentially updated. The fault with a probability approaching unity will be declared as the current fault in the GPS measurement. The residual formed from the GPS and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) measurements is used to update the probability of each fault. Results will be presented to show the performance of the presented algorithm.

Abstract: A thin layer on the component surface can be found
with high tensile residual stresses, due to turning operations, which
can dangerously affect the fatigue performance of the component. In
this paper an analytical approach is presented to reconstruct the
residual stress field from a limited incomplete set of measurements.
Airy stress function is used as the primary unknown to directly solve
the equilibrium equations and satisfying the boundary conditions. In
this new method there exists the flexibility to impose the physical
conditions that govern the behavior of residual stress to achieve a
meaningful complete stress field. The analysis is also coupled to a
least squares approximation and a regularization method to provide
stability of the inverse problem. The power of this new method is
then demonstrated by analyzing some experimental measurements
and achieving a good agreement between the model prediction and
the results obtained from residual stress measurement.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to develop a cost-effective WBGT heat stress monitor which provides precise heat stress measurement. The proposed device employs SHT15 and DS18B20 as a temperature and humidity sensors, respectively, incorporating with ATmega328 microcontroller. The developed heat stress monitor was calibrated and adjusted to that of the standard temperature and humidity sensors in the laboratory. The results of this study illustrated that the mean percentage error and the standard deviation from the measurement of the globe temperature was 2.33 and 2.71 respectively, while 0.94 and 1.02 were those of the dry bulb temperature, 0.79 and 0.48 were of the wet bulb temperature, and 4.46 and 1.60 were of the relative humidity sensor. This device is relatively low-cost and the measurement error is acceptable.
Abstract: In this paper, we proposed a method to classify each
type of natural rock texture. Our goal is to classify 26 classes of rock
textures. First, we extract five features of each class by using
principle component analysis combining with the use of applied
spatial frequency measurement. Next, the effective node number of
neural network was tested. We used the most effective neural
network in classification process. The results from this system yield
quite high in recognition rate. It is shown that high recognition rate
can be achieved in separation of 26 stone classes.
Abstract: In this paper, a fiber based Fabry-Perot interferometer
is proposed and demonstrated for a non-contact displacement
measurement. A piece of micro-prism which attached to the
mechanical vibrator is served as the target reflector. Interference
signal is generated from the superposition between the sensing beam
and the reference beam within the sensing arm of the fiber sensor.
This signal is then converted to the displacement value by using a
developed program written in visual Cµ programming with a
resolution of λ/8. A classical function generator is operated for
controlling the vibrator. By fixing an excitation frequency of 100 Hz
and varying the excitation amplitude range of 0.1 – 3 Volts, the
output displacements measured by the fiber sensor are obtained from
1.55 μm to 30.225 μm. A reference displacement sensor with a
sensitivity of ~0.4 μm is also employed for comparing the
displacement errors between both sensors. We found that over the
entire displacement range, a maximum and average measurement
error are obtained of 0.977% and 0.44% respectively.
Abstract: Unsatisfactory effectiveness of software systems
development and enhancement projects is one of the main reasons
why in software engineering there are attempts being made to use
experiences coming from other engineering disciplines. In spite of
specificity of software product and process a belief had come out that
the execution of software could be more effective if these objects
were subject to measurement – as it is true in other engineering
disciplines for which measurement is an immanent feature. Thus
objective and reliable approaches to the measurement of software
processes and products have been sought in software engineering for
several dozens of years already. This may be proved, among others,
by the current version of CMMI for Development model. This paper
is aimed at analyzing the approach to the software processes and
products measurement proposed in the latest version of this very
model, indicating growing acceptance for this issue in software
engineering.
Abstract: The breakdown strength characteristic of Low Density
Polyethylene films (LDPE) under DC voltage application and the
effect of water absorption have been studied. Mainly, our experiment
was investigated under two conditions; dry and heavy water
absorption. Under DC ramp voltage, the result found that the
breakdown strength under heavy water absorption has a lower value
than dry condition. In order to clarify the effect, the temperature rise of
film was observed using non contact thermograph until the occurrence
of the electrical breakdown and the conduction current of the sample
was also measured in correlation with the thermograph measurement.
From the observations, it was shown that under the heavy water
absorption, the hot spot in the samples appeared at lower voltage. At
the same voltage the temperature of the hot spot and conduction
current was higher than that under the dry condition. The measurement
result has a good correlation between the existence of a critical field
for conduction current and thermograph observation. In case of the
heavy water absorption, the occurrence of the threshold field was
earlier than the dry condition as result lead to higher of conduction
current and the temperature rise appears after threshold field was
significantly increased in increasing of field. The higher temperature
rise was caused by the higher current conduction as the result the
insulation leads to breakdown to the lower field application.
Abstract: The article deals with pneumatic and hot wire
anemometry measurement on subsonic axi-symmetric air ejector.
Performances of the ejector with and without pulsations of primary
flow are compared, measuring of characteristic pressures and mass
flow rates are performed and ejector efficiency is evaluated. The
pulsations of primary flow are produced by a synthetic jet generator,
which is placed in the supply line of the primary flow just in front of
the primary nozzle. The aim of the pulsation is to intensify the
mixing process. In the article we present: Pressure measuring of
pulsation on the mixing chamber wall, behind the mixing chamber
and behind the diffuser measured by fast pressure transducers and
results of hot wire anemometry measurement. It was found out that
using of primary flow pulsations yields higher back pressure behind
the ejector and higher efficiency. The processes in this ejector and
influences of primary flow pulsations on the mixing processes are
described.
Abstract: The pressure drag from a cam shaped tube in cross flows have been investigated experimentally using pressure distribution measurement. The range of angle of attack and Reynolds number based on an equivalent circular tube are within 0≤α≤360° and 2×104< Reeq < 3.4 ×104, respectively. It is found that the pressure drag coefficient is at its highest at α=90° and 270° over the whole range of Reynolds number. Results show that the pressure drag coefficient of the cam shaped tube is lower than that of circular tube with the same surface area for more of the angles of attack. Furthermore, effects of the diameter ratio and finite length of the cam shaped tube upon the pressure drag coefficient are discussed.
Abstract: Measurement of the COD of a spent caustic solution involves firstly digestion of a test sample with dichromate solution and secondly measurement of dichromate remained by titration by ferrous ammonium sulfate [FAS] to an end point. In this paper we study by a potentiometric end point with Ag/AgCl reference electrode and gold rode electrode. The potentiometric end point is sharp and easily identified especially for the samples with high turbidity and color that other methods such as colorimetric in this type of sample do not result in high precision. Because interim of titration responds quickly to potential changes within the [Cr+6/Cr+3& Fe+2/Fe+3] solution producing stable readings that is lead to accurate COD measurement. Finally results are compared with data determined using colorimetric method for standard samples. It is shown that the potentiometric end point titration with gold rode electrode can be used with equal or better facility
