Abstract: Searching the “Island of stability” is a topic of
extreme interest in theoretical as well as experimental modern
physics today. This “island of stability” is spanned by superheavy
elements (SHE's) that are produced in the laboratory. SHE's are
believed to exist primarily due to the “magic” stabilizing effects of
nuclear shell structure. SHE synthesis is extremely difficult due to
their very low production cross section, often of the order of pico
barns or less. Stabilizing effects of shell closures at proton number
Z=82 and neutron number N=126 are predicted theoretically. Though
stabilizing effects of Z=82 have been experimentally verified, no
concluding observations have been made with N=126, so far. We
measured and analyzed the total evaporation residue (ER) cross
sections for a number of systems with neutron number around 126 to
explore possible shell closure effects in ER cross sections, in this
work.
Abstract: This paper presents the advantages of fuzzy control use in technological processes control. The paper presents a real application of the Linguistic Fuzzy-Logic Control, developed at the University of Ostrava for the control of physical models in the Intelligent Systems Laboratory. The paper presents an example of a sensitive non-linear model, such as a magnetic levitation model and obtained results which show how modern information technologies can help to solve actual technical problems. A special method based on the LFLC controller with partial components is presented in this paper followed by the method of automatic context change, which is very helpful to achieve more accurate control results. The main advantage of the used system is its robustness in changing conditions demonstrated by comparing with conventional PID controller. This technology and real models are also used as a background for problem-oriented teaching, realized at the department for master students and their collaborative as well as individual final projects.
Abstract: Biodiesel production from vegetable oil will produce
glycerol as by-product about 10% of the biodiesel production. The
amount of glycerol that was produced needed alternative way to
handling immediately so as to not become the waste that polluted
environment. One of the solutions was to process glycerol to
polyglycidyl nitrate (PGN). PGN is synthesized from glycerol by
three-step reactions i.e. nitration of glycerol, cyclization of 13-
dinitroglycerine and polymerization of glycosyl nitrate. Optimum
condition of nitration of glycerol with nitric acid has not been known.
Thermodynamic feasibility should be done before run experiments in
the laboratory. The aim of this study was to determine the parameters
those affect nitration of glycerol and nitric acid and chose the
operation condition. Many parameters were simulated to verify its
possibility to experiment under conditions which would get the
highest conversion of 1, 3-dinitroglycerine and which was the ideal
condition to get it. The parameters that need to be studied to obtain
the highest conversion of 1, 3-dinitroglycerine were mol ratio of
nitric acid/glycerol, reaction temperature, mol ratio of
glycerol/dichloromethane and pressure. The highest conversion was
obtained in the range of mol ratio of nitric acid /glycerol between 2/1
– 5/1, reaction temperature of 5-25oC and pressure of 1 atm. The
parameters that need to be studied further to obtain the highest
conversion of 1.3 DNG are mol ratio of nitric acid/glycerol and
reaction temperature.
Abstract: The sea waves carry thousands of GWs of power
globally. Although there are a number of different approaches to
harness offshore energy, they are likely to be expensive, practically
challenging, and vulnerable to storms. Therefore, this paper considers
using the near shore waves for generating mechanical and electrical
power. It introduces two new approaches, the wave manipulation and
using a variable duct turbine, for intercepting very wide wave fronts
and coping with the fluctuations of the wave height and the sea level,
respectively. The first approach effectively allows capturing much
more energy yet with a much narrower turbine rotor. The second
approach allows using a rotor with a smaller radius but captures
energy of higher wave fronts at higher sea levels yet preventing it
from totally submerging. To illustrate the effectiveness of the first
approach, the paper contains a description and the simulation results
of a scale model of a wave manipulator. Then, it includes the results
of testing a physical model of the manipulator and a single duct, axial
flow turbine in a wave flume in the laboratory. The paper also
includes comparisons of theoretical predictions, simulation results,
and wave flume tests with respect to the incident energy, loss in wave
manipulation, minimal loss, brake torque, and the angular velocity.
Abstract: Pipe failure and leakage is a problematic issue and the
traditional solution of replacing the pipes is costly and time
consuming. Rehabilitation by relining materials based on polymer
composites is an alternative solution towards the degradation problem
of the old piping. This paper provides a brief summary of advances in
technology, methods and materials for relining as well as a summary
of the degradation analyses of the two main composite materials used
for relining, rubber filled epoxy and reinforced polyester baltoflake
when they are exposed in deionized water and elevated temperature
up to 80°C for a duration of 2-14 months in the laboratory.
Abstract: Electric machines are driven nowadays by static system popularly known as soft starter. This paper describes a thyristor based static frequency converter (SFC) to run a large synchronous machine installed at a short circuit test laboratory. Normally a synchronous machine requires prime mover or some other driving mechanism to run. This machine doesn’t need a prime mover as it operates in dual mode. In the beginning SFC starts this machine as a motor to achieve the full speed. Thereafter whenever required it can be converted to generator mode. This paper begins with the various starting methodology of synchronous machine. Detailed of SFC with different operational modes have been analyzed. Shaft voltage is a very common phenomenon for the machines with static drives. Various causes of shaft voltages in perspective with this machine are the main attraction of this paper.
Abstract: Dynamicity of stream channels along with environmental concern is the key issue to address in lowland rivers like Jamuna in Bangladesh. The groins are important structures in attaining the improved river environment, but their effective functioning is not evident yet with the present design. Considering the present demands, an approach through modification of groin configurations is planned to function more natural way in dynamic lowland rivers. Four different configurations including the conventional one are considered in the study, and the changes in hydro- and morpho-dynamics affected by various structures are investigated in the laboratory. Results show that the modified combined groin favors gradual deceleration of flow towards the channel side and minimizes local scour noticeably. This favors stable regular channel and improve environmental functions.
Abstract: To improve the water quality of lakes and control algae blooms, the effects of Vallisneria asiatica which is one of aquatic plants spread over Lake Taihu, with different biomasses on the water quality and algae communities were researched. The results indicated that V. asiatica could control an excess of Microcystis spp. when the V. asiatica biomass was larger than 50g in the tank with 30L solution in the laboratory. Planktonic and epiphytic algae responded differently to V. asiatica. The presence of macrophyte V. asiatica in eutrophic waters has a positive effect on algae compositions because of different sensitivities of algae species to allelopathic substances released by macrophyte V. asiatica. That is, V. asiatica could inhibit the growth of Microcystis spp. effectively and was benefited to the diatom on the condition in the laboratory.
Abstract: A typical flexible pavement structure consists of the surface, base, sub-base and subgrade soil. The loading traffic is transferred from the top layer with higher stiffness to the layer below with less stiffness. Under normal traffic loading, the behaviour of flexible pavement is very complex and can be predicted by using the repeated load triaxial test equipment in the laboratory. However, the nature of the repeated load triaxial testing procedure is considered time-consuming, complicated and expensive, and it is a challenge to carry out as a routine test in the laboratory. Therefore, the current paper proposes a numerical approach to simulate the repeated load triaxial test by employing the discrete element method. A sample with particle size ranging from 2.36mm to 19.0mm was constructed. Material properties, which included normal stiffness, shear stiffness, coefficient of friction, maximum dry density and particle density, were used as the input for the simulation. The sample was then subjected to a combination of deviator and confining stress and it was found that the discrete element method is able to simulate the repeated load triaxial test in the laboratory.
Abstract: This paper features the trajectory planning design of a indigenously developed 4-Axis SCARA robot which is used for doing successful robotic manipulation task in the laboratory. Once, a trajectory is being designed and given as input to the robot, the robot's gripper tip moves along that specified trajectory. Trajectories have to be designed in the work space only. The main idea of this paper is to design a continuous path trajectory model for the indigenously developed SCARA robot arm during its maneuvering from one point to another point (during pick and place operations) in a workspace avoiding all the obstacles in its path of motion.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present the design and
instrumentation of a new benchmark multivariable nonlinear control
laboratory. The mathematical model of this system may be used to
test the applicability and performance of various nonlinear control
procedures. The system is a two degree-of-freedom robotic arm with
soft and hard (discontinuous) nonlinear terms. Two novel
mechanisms are designed to allow the implementation of adjustable
Coulomb friction and backlash.
Abstract: This study is concerned with pH solution detection
using 2 × 4 flexible sensor array based on a plastic polyethylene
terephthalate (PET) substrate that is coated a conductive layer and a
ruthenium dioxide (RuO2) sensitive membrane with the technologies
of screen-printing and RF sputtering. For data analysis, we also
prepared a dynamic measurement system for acquiring the response
voltage and analyzing the characteristics of the working electrodes
(WEs), such as sensitivity and linearity. In this condition, an array
measurement system was designed to acquire the original signal from
sensor array, and it is based on the method of digital signal processing
(DSP). The DSP modifies the unstable acquisition data to a direct
current (DC) output using the technique of digital filter. Hence, this
sensor array can obtain a satisfactory yield, 62.5%, through the design
measurement and analysis system in our laboratory.
Abstract: The cables in a nuclear power plant are designed to be
used for about 40 years in safe operation environment. However, the
heat and radiation in the nuclear power plant causes the rapid
performance deterioration of cables in nuclear vessels and heat
exchangers, which requires cable lifetime estimation. The most
accurate method of estimating the cable lifetime is to evaluate the
cables in a laboratory. However, removing cables while the plant is
operating is not allowed because of its safety and cost. In this paper, a
robot system to estimate the cable lifetime in nuclear power plants is
developed and tested. The developed robot system can calculate a
modulus value to estimate the cable lifetime even when the nuclear
power plant is in operation.
Abstract: Soil mechanics is a traditional course in any
university. Management of lab classes is one of the main issues to
deliver a proper outline. In Curtin University, different methods
applied to check the efficiency of these methods. One of them was
mainly rely on demonstration and the other one mainly on involving
students in running tests. Comparison between these delivery
methods also are outlined in summary section. The recommendation
also made that the more satisfaction is reachable while the students
engaged.
Abstract: Plasma plume will be produced and arrive at spacecraft when the electric thruster operates on orbit. It-s important to characterize the thruster plasma parameters because the plume has significant effects or hazards on spacecraft sub-systems and parts. Through the ground test data of the desired parameters, the major characteristics of the thruster plume will be achieved. Also it is very important for optimizing design of Ion thruster. Retarding Potential Analyzer (RPA) is an effective instrument for plasma ion energy per unit charge distribution measurement. Special RPA should be designed according to certain plume plasma parameters range and feature. In this paper, major principles usable for good RPA design are discussed carefully. Conform to these principles, a four-grid planar electrostatic energy analyzer RPA was designed to avoid false data, and details were discussed including construction, materials, aperture diameter and so on. At the same time, it was designed more suitable for credible and long-duration measurements in the laboratory. In the end, RPA measurement results in the laboratory were given and discussed.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of preexercise glycerol hyperhydration on endurance performance in a heat chamber designed to simulate the World Championship Distance (WCD) duathlon (10km run, 40km ride, 5 km run). Duathlons are often performed in hot and humid conditions and as a result hydration is a major issue. Glycerol enhances the body’s capacity for fluid retention by inducing hyperhydration, which is theorized to improve thermoregulatory and cardiovascular responses, and thereby improve performance. Six well-trained athletes completed the testing protocol in a heat chamber at the La Trobe University Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Each testing session was approximately 4.5 hours in duration (2 hours of pre-exercise glycerol hyper-hydration followed by approximately 2.5 hours of exercise). The results showed an increased water retention pre-exercise and an improved overall performance of 2.04% was achieved by subjects ingesting the glycerol solution.
Abstract: Due to the growth of the urban area towards lands
contaminated with ancient tails, in this work we evaluated if the
leaching with calcium thiosulfate (CaS2O3) for the recovery of silver,
gold and mercury from this soil, also dissolves arsenic, cadmium and
lead; for this, we determined their quantity per each fraction of size
of particle of the soil before and after the dissolution. Half of the soil
samples were leached in the plant Beneficiadora de Jales del Centro,
S. A. de C.V. and the rest of them remained in the laboratory. The
ICP-OES technique was used to determine the amounts of arsenic,
cadmium and lead, in the samples of both lots. The soil samples were
collected in a neighboring area at El Lampotal, Vetagrande,
Zacatecas, México, with an extension of 600 m2 at 22º52' 37.69'' N,
102º25' 11.73'' W. The amount of arsenic, cadmium and lead found
in nonleached soil and for a particle size of 47 μm was 203.72±3.73,
33.63±1.31 and 3480.99±20.4 mg/kg respectively.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to develop a cost-effective WBGT heat stress monitor which provides precise heat stress measurement. The proposed device employs SHT15 and DS18B20 as a temperature and humidity sensors, respectively, incorporating with ATmega328 microcontroller. The developed heat stress monitor was calibrated and adjusted to that of the standard temperature and humidity sensors in the laboratory. The results of this study illustrated that the mean percentage error and the standard deviation from the measurement of the globe temperature was 2.33 and 2.71 respectively, while 0.94 and 1.02 were those of the dry bulb temperature, 0.79 and 0.48 were of the wet bulb temperature, and 4.46 and 1.60 were of the relative humidity sensor. This device is relatively low-cost and the measurement error is acceptable.
Abstract: Energy dissipation in drops has been investigated by
physical models. After determination of effective parameters on the
phenomenon, three drops with different heights have been
constructed from Plexiglas. They have been installed in two existing
flumes in the hydraulic laboratory. Several runs of physical models
have been undertaken to measured required parameters for
determination of the energy dissipation. Results showed that the
energy dissipation in drops depend on the drop height and discharge.
Predicted relative energy dissipations varied from 10.0% to 94.3%.
This work has also indicated that the energy loss at drop is mainly
due to the mixing of the jet with the pool behind the jet that causes
air bubble entrainment in the flow. Statistical model has been
developed to predict the energy dissipation in vertical drops denotes
nonlinear correlation between effective parameters. Further an
artificial neural networks (ANNs) approach was used in this paper to
develop an explicit procedure for calculating energy loss at drops
using NeuroSolutions. Trained network was able to predict the
response with R2 and RMSE 0.977 and 0.0085 respectively. The
performance of ANN was found effective when compared to
regression equations in predicting the energy loss.
Abstract: This paper deals with the development of a Jacobean model for a 4-axes indigenously developed scara robot arm in the laboratory. This model is used to study the relation between the velocities and the forces in the robot while it is doing the pick and place operation.
