Abstract: In an effort to understand the preliminary effects of aerodynamic stress on alveolar epithelial cells, we developed a multifluidic cell culture platform capable of supporting alveolar cultures at an air-liquid interface under constant air flow and exposure to varying pressure stimuli on the apical side while providing nourishment on the basolateral plane. Our current study involved utilizing the platform to study the effect of basement membrane coating and addition of dexamethasone on cellular response to pressure in A549 and H441 alveolar epithelial cells.
Abstract: Implementing quality assurance in higher education establishments is the main focus of the reform process currently undertaken by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The reform agenda has involved attempts to improve academic quality and management processes in universities, technical institutions and colleges. The central challenge for the reform process is to produce change in higher education in a region where administration is described as centralized and bureaucratic. To make these changes, there should be a well-designed plans and follow up processes in order to monitor progress and develop responses to obstacles. Lack of skills, resources, political dilemmas, poor motivation, and readiness to face the consequences of change are factors which will determine the success of the reform process.
Abstract: Structural redundancy is an interesting point in
seismic design of structures. Initially, the structural redundancy is
described as indeterminate degree of a system. Although many definitions are presented for redundancy in structures, recently the
definition of structural redundancy has been related to the configuration of structural system and the number of lateral load
transferring directions in the structure. The steel frames with infill walls are general systems in the constructing of usual residential buildings in some countries. It is
obviously declared that the performance of structures will be affected by adding masonry infill walls. In order to investigate the effect of
infill walls on the redundancy of the steel frame which constructed
with masonry walls, the components of redundancy including redundancy variation index, redundancy strength index and
redundancy response modification factor were extracted for the
frames with masonry infills. Several steel frames with typical storey number and various numbers of bays were designed and considered.
The redundancy of frames with and without infill walls was evaluated by proposed method. The results showed the presence of infill causes increase of redundancy.
Abstract: Response to the public health-related emergencies is analysed here for a rural university in South Africa. The structure of the designated emergency plan covers all the phases of the disaster management cycle. The plan contains elements of the vulnerability model and the technocratic model of emergency management. The response structures are vertically and horizontally integrated, while the planning contains elements of scenario-based and functional planning. The available number of medical professionals at the Rhodes University, along with the medical insurance rates, makes the staff and students potentially more medically vulnerable than the South African population. The main improvements of the emergency management are required in the tornado response and the information dissemination during health emergencies. The latter should involve the increased use of social media and e-mails, following the Taylor model of communication. Infrastructure must be improved in the telecommunication sector in the face of unpredictable electricity outages.
Abstract: This paper will focus on modeling, analysis and simulation of a 42V/14V dc/dc converter based architecture. This architecture is considered to be technically a viable solution for automotive dual-voltage power system for passenger car in the near further. An interleaved dc/dc converter system is chosen for the automotive converter topology due to its advantages regarding filter reduction, dynamic response, and power management. Presented herein, is a model based on one kilowatt interleaved six-phase buck converter designed to operate in a Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM). The control strategy of the converter is based on a voltagemode- controlled Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) with a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID). The effectiveness of the interleaved step-down converter is verified through simulation results using control-oriented simulator, MatLab/Simulink.
Abstract: A semi-active control strategy for suspension
systems of passenger cars is presented employing
Magnetorheological (MR) dampers. The vehicle is modeled with
seven DOFs including the, roll pitch and bounce of car body, and
the vertical motion of the four tires. In order to design an optimal
controller based on the actuator constraints, a Linear-Quadratic
Regulator (LQR) is designed. The design procedure of the LQR
consists of selecting two weighting matrices to minimize the energy
of the control system. This paper presents a hybrid optimization
procedure which is a combination of gradient-based and
evolutionary algorithms to choose the weighting matrices with
regards to the actuator constraint. The optimization algorithm is
defined based on maximum comfort and actuator constraints. It is
noted that utilizing the present control algorithm may significantly
reduce the vibration response of the passenger car, thus, providing
a comfortable ride.
Abstract: The liquid cargo contained in a partly-filled road tank
vehicle is prone to dynamic slosh movement when subjected to
external disturbances. The slosh behavior has been identified as a
significant factor impairing the safety of liquid cargo transportation.
The laboratory experiments have been conducted for analyzing fluid
slosh in partly filled tanks. The experiment results measured under
forced harmonic excitations reveal the three-dimensional nature of
the fluid motion and coupling between the lateral and longitudinal
fluid slosh at resonance. Several spectral components are observed
for the transient slosh forces, which can be associated with the
excitation, resonance, and beat frequencies. The peak slosh forces
and moments in the vicinity of resonance are significantly larger than
those of the equivalent rigid mass. Due to the nature of coupling
between sloshing fluid and vehicle body, the issue of the dynamic
fluid-structure interaction is essential in the analysis of tank-vehicle
dynamics. A dynamic pitch plane model of a Tridem truck
incorporated the fluid slosh dynamics is developed to analyze the
fluid-vehicle interaction under the straight-line braking maneuvers.
The results show that the vehicle responses are highly associated
with the characteristics of fluid slosh force and moment.
Abstract: Within this work High Temperature Single Impact
Studies were performed to evaluate deformation mechanisms at
different energy and momentum levels. To show the influence of
different microstructures and hardness levels and their response to
single impacts four different materials were tested at various
temperatures up to 700°C. One carbide reinforced NiCrBSi based
Metal Matrix Composite and three different steels were tested. The
aim of this work is to determine critical energies for fracture
appearance and the materials response at different energy and
momenta levels. Critical impact loadings were examined at elevated
temperatures to limit operating conditions in impact dominated
regimes at elevated temperatures. The investigations on the
mechanisms were performed using different means of microscopy at
the surface and in metallographic cross sections. Results indicate
temperature dependence of the occurrence of cracks in hardphase
rich materials, such as Metal Matrix Composites High Speed Steels
and the influence of different impact momenta at constant energies
on the deformation of different steels.
Abstract: Present study focuses on studying the oscillatory
behavior of jet diffusion flames. At a particular jet exit velocity, the
flames are seen to exhibit natural flickering. Initially the flickering
process is not continuous. In this transition region as well as in the
continuous flickering regime, the flickering displays multiple
frequency oscillations. The response of the flame to the exit velocity
profile of the burner is also studied using three types of burners. The
entire range of natural flickering is investigated by capturing high
speed digital images and processing them using a MATLAB code.
Abstract: In recent years linguistic research has turned
increasing attention to covert/overt strategies to modulate authorial
stance and positioning in scientific texts, and to the recipients'
response. This study discussed some theoretical implications of the
use of rhetoric in scientific communication and analysed qualitative
data from the authoritative The Cognitive Neurosciences III (2004)
volume. Its genre-identity, status and readability were considered, in
the social interactive context of contemporary disciplinary discourses
– in their polyphony of traditional and new, emerging genres.
Evidence was given of the ways its famous authors negotiate and
shape knowledge and research results – explicitly appraising team
work and promoting faith in the fast-paced progress of Cognitive

Abstract: Considering the merits and limitations of energy dissipation system, seismic isolation system and suspension system, a new earthquake resistant system is proposed and is demonstrated numerically through a frame-core structure. Base isolators and story isolators are installed in the proposed system. The former “isolates" the frame from the foundation and the latter “separates" the frame from the center core. Equations of motion are formulated to study the response of the proposed structural system to strong earthquake motion. As compared with the fixed-base building system, the proposed structural system shows substantial reduction on structural response.
Abstract: CIM is the standard formalism for modeling management
information developed by the Distributed Management Task
Force (DMTF) in the context of its WBEM proposal, designed to
provide a conceptual view of the managed environment. In this
paper, we propose the inclusion of formal knowledge representation
techniques, based on Description Logics (DLs) and the Web Ontology
Language (OWL), in CIM-based conceptual modeling, and then we
examine the benefits of such a decision. The proposal is specified as a
CIM metamodel level mapping to a highly expressive subset of DLs
capable of capturing all the semantics of the models. The paper shows
how the proposed mapping can be used for automatic reasoning
about the management information models, as a design aid, by means
of new-generation CASE tools, thanks to the use of state-of-the-art
automatic reasoning systems that support the proposed logic and use
algorithms that are sound and complete with respect to the semantics.
Such a CASE tool framework has been developed by the authors and
its architecture is also introduced. The proposed formalization is not
only useful at design time, but also at run time through the use of
rational autonomous agents, in response to a need recently recognized
by the DMTF.
Abstract: Power transformer consists of components which are
under consistent thermal and electrical stresses. The major
component which degrades under these stresses is the paper
insulation of the power transformer. At site, lightning impulses and
cable faults may cause the winding deformation. In addition, the
winding may deform due to impact during transportation. A
deformed winding will excite more stress to its insulating paper thus
will degrade it. Insulation degradation will shorten the life-span of
the transformer. Currently there are two methods of detecting the
winding deformation which are Sweep Frequency Response
Analysis (SFRA) and Low Voltage Impulse Test (LVI). The latter
injects current pulses to the winding and capture the admittance
plot. In this paper, a transformer which experienced overheating and
arcing was identified, and both SFRA and LVI were performed.
Next, the transformer was brought to the factory for untanking. The
untanking results revealed that the LVI is more accurate than the
SFRA method for this case study.
Abstract: Recently, genetic algorithms (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique have attracted considerable attention among various modern heuristic optimization techniques. The GA has been popular in academia and the industry mainly because of its intuitiveness, ease of implementation, and the ability to effectively solve highly non-linear, mixed integer optimization problems that are typical of complex engineering systems. PSO technique is a relatively recent heuristic search method whose mechanics are inspired by the swarming or collaborative behavior of biological populations. In this paper both PSO and GA optimization are employed for finding stable reduced order models of single-input- single-output large-scale linear systems. Both the techniques guarantee stability of reduced order model if the original high order model is stable. PSO method is based on the minimization of the Integral Squared Error (ISE) between the transient responses of original higher order model and the reduced order model pertaining to a unit step input. Both the methods are illustrated through numerical example from literature and the results are compared with recently published conventional model reduction technique.
Abstract: This paper reports a case study on how a conceptual
and analytical thinking approach was used in Art and Design Department at Multimedia University (Malaysia) in addressing the
issues of one nation and its impact in the society through artworks. The art project was designed for students to increase the know-how
and develop creative thinking in design and communication. Goals of the design project were: (1) to develop creative thinking in design
and communication, (2) to increase student understanding on the
process of problem solving for design work, and (3) to use design
elements and principles to generate interest, attention and emotional responses. An exhibition entitled "One Nation" was showcased to
local and international viewers consisting of the general public, professionals, academics, artists and students. Findings indicate that the project supported several visual art standards, as well as
generated awareness in the society. This project may be of interest to
current and future art educators and others interested in the potential
of utilizing global issues as content for art, community and environment studies for the purpose of educational art.
Abstract: The authors present an algorithm for order reduction of linear dynamic systems using the combined advantages of stability equation method and the error minimization by Genetic algorithm. The denominator of the reduced order model is obtained by the stability equation method and the numerator terms of the lower order transfer function are determined by minimizing the integral square error between the transient responses of original and reduced order models using Genetic algorithm. The reduction procedure is simple and computer oriented. It is shown that the algorithm has several advantages, e.g. the reduced order models retain the steady-state value and stability of the original system. The proposed algorithm has also been extended for the order reduction of linear multivariable systems. Two numerical examples are solved to illustrate the superiority of the algorithm over some existing ones including one example of multivariable system.
Abstract: In this paper we compare the response of linear and
nonlinear neural network-based prediction schemes in prediction of
received Signal-to-Interference Power Ratio (SIR) in Direct
Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS/CDMA) systems. The
nonlinear predictor is Multilayer Perceptron MLP and the linear
predictor is an Adaptive Linear (Adaline) predictor. We solve the
problem of complexity by using the Minimum Mean Squared Error
(MMSE) principle to select the optimal predictors. The optimized
Adaline predictor is compared to optimized MLP by employing
noisy Rayleigh fading signals with 1.8 GHZ carrier frequency in an
urban environment. The results show that the Adaline predictor can
estimates SIR with the same error as MLP when the user has the
velocity of 5 km/h and 60 km/h but by increasing the velocity up-to
120 km/h the mean squared error of MLP is two times more than
Adaline predictor. This makes the Adaline predictor (with lower
complexity) more suitable than MLP for closed-loop power control
where efficient and accurate identification of the time-varying
inverse dynamics of the multi path fading channel is required.
Abstract: Green Forestation Plan (GFP) was expected to promote the reforestation of plains totaling 60,000 has within the first 8 years. Annual subsidies were budgeted at $120,000 per ha, and $2.4 million for 20 years. In this research we have surveyed landlords- opinions toward the GFP in an attempt to understand landlords- incentives for participating in the GFP and their levels of concern and agreement toward the policy design. Based our analysis of landlords- opinions on the policy design, we expect to derive appropriate complementary measures, establish effective promotional schemes, and raise the policy effectiveness of the GFP. According to the results of this research, there was still a relatively high proportion of population who were not aware of GFP; more than 50% of landlords were neutral or willing to participate given high reforestation subsidies; approximately 30% of landlords were unwilling to participate. In terms of the designs of GFP, more than 50% of respondents were concerned and agreed with the policy design. In terms of the period of this policy, 52.7% of respondents indicated that it should be shortened to 15 years or lower. In terms of the amount of the subsidy, 41.7% of respondents showed that it should be raised to approximately $250,000/ha. In terms of land area restrictions, 88.0% of respondents believed that the minimum should be lowered to 0.4 ha. More than 70% of respondents owned less than 0.4 has of land, and since they do not own enough land to be eligible for the program, more than 80% of landlords wished to lower the minimum requirements of land area. In addition, 59.3% of respondents were reluctant to participate in reforestation because their lands were too small to be eligible; 15.0% of respondents were reluctant because the duration was too long. Responses to the question about “how the policy can be adjusted to provide incentives for landlords- participation" revealed that almost 40% of respondents desired higher subsidies. Some policy suggestions are provided as follows: (1) many landlords are still unaware of the GFP so the government should enhance the promotion of the policy; (2) many landlords are unwilling to participate in GFP mainly because they do not own enough lands to be eligible, hence the government should consider adjusting its requirements for minimum agricultural land area; (3) for subsequent promotions on GFP, the government may consider targeting on the landlords with high income and high level of education; (4) because the subsidy of this policy alone provides limited help to landlords, the government should help the landlords to explore other revenue possibilities from afforestation in addition to the existing subsidies and raise the participation incentives.
Abstract: Removal of a reactive dye (Reactive blue 4) by
adsorption utilizing waste aluminium hydroxide sludge as an
adsorbent was investigated. The removal of the dye was optimized
using response surface methodology (RSM). In the RSM
experiments; initial dye concentration, adsorbent concentration and
contact time were critical parameters. RSM experiments were
performed at the range of initial dye concentration 31.82-368.18
mg/L, adsorbent concentration 3.18-36.82 g/L, contact time 15.82-
56.18 h. Optimum initial dye concentration, adsorbent concentration
and contact time were obtained as 108.83 mg/L, 29.36 g/L and 33.57
h respectively. At these conditions, maximum removal of the dye was
obtained as 95%. The experiments were performed at the optimum
conditions to verify these results and the same results were obtained.
