Abstract: Several models of vulnerability assessment have been proposed. The selection of one of these models depends on the objectives of the study. The classical methodologies for seismic vulnerability analysis, as a part of seismic risk analysis, have been formulated with statistical criteria based on a rapid observation. The information relating to the buildings performance is statistically elaborated. In this paper, we use the European Macroseismic Scale EMS-98 to define the relationship between damage and macroseismic intensity to assess the seismic vulnerability. Applying to Algiers area, the first step is to identify building typologies and to assign vulnerability classes. In the second step, damages are investigated according to EMS-98.
Abstract: This paper aims at identifying and analyzing the
knowledge transmission channels in textile and clothing clusters
located in Brazil and in Europe. Primary data was obtained through
interviews with key individuals. The collection of primary data was
carried out based on a questionnaire with ten categories of indicators
of knowledge transmission. Secondary data was also collected
through a literature review and through international organizations
sites. Similarities related to the use of the main transmission channels
of knowledge are observed in all cases. The main similarities are:
influence of suppliers of machinery, equipment and raw materials;
imitation of products and best practices; training promoted by
technical institutions and businesses; and cluster companies being
open to acquire new knowledge. The main differences lie in the
relationship between companies, where in Europe the intensity of this
relationship is bigger when compared to Brazil. The differences also
occur in importance and frequency of the relationship with the
government, with the cultural environment, and with the activities of
research and development. It is also found factors that reduce the
importance of geographical proximity in transmission of knowledge,
and in generating trust and the establishment of collaborative
behavior.
Abstract: We have measured the pressure drop and convective
heat transfer coefficient of water – based AL(25nm),AL2O3(30nm)
and CuO(50nm) Nanofluids flowing through a uniform heated
circular tube in the fully developed laminar flow regime. The
experimental results show that the data for Nanofluids friction factor
show a good agreement with analytical prediction from the Darcy's
equation for single-phase flow. After reducing the experimental
results to the form of Reynolds, Rayleigh and Nusselt numbers. The
results show the local Nusselt number and temperature have
distribution with the non-dimensional axial distance from the tube
entry. Study decided that thenNanofluid as Newtonian fluids through
the design of the linear relationship between shear stress and the rate
of stress has been the study of three chains of the Nanofluid with
different concentrations and where the AL, AL2O3 and CuO – water
ranging from (0.25 - 2.5 vol %). In addition to measuring the four
properties of the Nanofluid in practice so as to ensure the validity of
equations of properties developed by the researchers in this area and
these properties is viscosity, specific heat, and density and found that
the difference does not exceed 3.5% for the experimental equations
between them and the practical. The study also demonstrated that the
amount of the increase in heat transfer coefficient for three types of
Nano fluid is AL, AL2O3, and CuO – Water and these ratios are
respectively (45%, 32%, 25%) with insulation and without insulation
(36%, 23%, 19%), and the statement of any of the cases the best
increase in heat transfer has been proven that using insulation is
better than not using it. I have been using three types of Nano
particles and one metallic Nanoparticle and two oxide Nanoparticle
and a statement, whichever gives the best increase in heat transfer.
Abstract: Chronic conditions carry with them strong emotions
and often lead to charged relationships between patients and their
health providers and, by extension, patients and health researchers.
Persons are both autonomous and relational and a purely cognitive
model of autonomy neglects the social and relational basis of chronic
illness. Ensuring genuine informed consent in research requires a
thorough understanding of how participants perceive a study and
their reasons for participation. Surveys may not capture the
complexities of reasoning that underlies study participation.
Contradictory reasons for participation, for instance an initial claim
of altruism as rationale and a subsequent claim of personal benefit
(therapeutic misconception), affect the quality of informed consent.
Individuals apply principles through the filter of personal values and
lived experience. Authentic autonomy, and hence authentic consent
to research, occurs within the context of patients- unique life
narratives and illness experiences.
Abstract: There are three distinct stages in the evolution of
economic thought, namely:
1. in the first stage, the major concern was to accelerate
economic growth with increased availability of material
goods, especially in developing economies with very low
living standards, because poverty eradication meant faster
economic growth.
2. in the second stage, economists made distinction between
growth and development. Development was seen as going
beyond economic growth, and bringing certain changes in
the structure of the economy with more equitable
distribution of the benefits of growth, with the growth
coming automatic and sustained.
3. the third stage is now reached. Our concern is now with
“sustainable development", that is, development not only
for the present but also of the future.
Thus the focus changed from “sustained growth" to “sustained
development". Sustained development brings to the fore the long
term relationship between the ecology and economic development.
Since the creation of UNEP in 1972 it has worked for
development without destruction for environmentally sound and
sustained development. It was realised that the environment cannot
be viewed in a vaccum, it is not separate from development, nor is it
competing. It suggested for the integration of the environment with
development whereby ecological factors enter development planning,
socio-economic policies, cost-benefit analysis, trade, technology
transfer, waste management, educational and other specific areas.
Industrialisation has contributed to the growth of economy of
several countries. It has improved the standards of living of its people
and provided benefits to the society. It has also created in the process
great environmental problems like climate change, forest destruction
and denudation, soil erosion and desertification etc.
On the other hand, industry has provided jobs and improved the
prospects of wealth for the industrialists. The working class
communities had to simply put up with the high levels of pollution in
order to keep up their jobs and also to save their income.
There are many roots of the environmental problem. They may be
political, economic, cultural and technological conditions of the
modern society. The experts concede that industrial growth lies
somewhere close to the heart of the matter. Therefore, the objective
of this paper is not to document all roots of an environmental crisis
but rather to discuss the effects of industrial growth and
development.
We have come to the conclusion that although public intervention
is often unnecessary to ensure that perfectly competitive markets will
function in society-s best interests, such intervention is necessary
when firms or consumers pollute.
Abstract: Most Decision Support Systems (DSS) for waste
management (WM) constructed are not widely marketed and lack
practical applications. This is due to the number of variables and
complexity of the mathematical models which include the
assumptions and constraints required in decision making. The
approach made by many researchers in DSS modelling is to isolate a
few key factors that have a significant influence to the DSS. This
segmented approach does not provide a thorough understanding of
the complex relationships of the many elements involved. The
various elements in constructing the DSS must be integrated and
optimized in order to produce a viable model that is marketable and
has practical application. The DSS model used in assisting decision
makers should be integrated with GIS, able to give robust prediction
despite the inherent uncertainties of waste generation and the plethora
of waste characteristics, and gives optimal allocation of waste stream
for recycling, incineration, landfill and composting.
Abstract: In this cyber age, the job market has been rapidly transforming and being digitalized. Submitting a paper-based curriculum vitae (CV) nowadays does not grant a job seeker a high employability rate. This paper calls for attention on the creation of mobile Curriculum Vitae or m-CV (http://mcurriculumvitae. blogspot.com), a sample of an individual CV developed using weblog, which can enhance the job hunter especially fresh graduate-s higher marketability rate. This study is designed to identify the perceptions held by Malaysian university students regarding m-CV grounded on a modified Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). It measures the strength and the direction of relationships among three major variables – Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Behavioral Intention (BI) to use. The finding shows that university students generally accepted adopting m-CV since they perceived m-CV to be more useful rather than easy to use. Additionally, this study has confirmed TAM to be a useful theoretical model in helping to understand and explain the behavioral intention to use Web 2.0 application-weblog publishing their CV. The result of the study has underlined another significant positive value of using weblog to create personal CV. Further research of m-CV has been highlighted in this paper.
Abstract: In today's complex global environment, emotional intelligence in educational administrations encompasses self-regard that is formed to utilize communication effectiveness. The paper is undertaken to understand the relationship between managers- emotional intelligence especially self-regard and employees to improve communication effectiveness in educational administrations of Iran. Data (N = 145) for this study were collected through questionnaires that participants were managers and employees educational administrations of Iran. The aim of this paper assess the emotional intelligence especially self-regard of managers and employees and its relationship with communication effectiveness in educational administrations of Iran. This paper explained self-regard that has a high relationship with communication especially communication effectiveness. Self-regard plays an important role in communication effectiveness. Individuals with high self-regard tend to have higher emotional intelligence and this action lead to improve communication effectiveness. The result of the paper shows a strong correspondence between self-regard and communication effectiveness in educational administrations.
Abstract: This paper focuses upon three such painters working in
France from this time and their representations both of their host
country in which they found themselves displaced, and of their
homeland which they represent through refracted memories from their
new perspective in Europe. What is their representation of France and
China´╝ÅTaiwan? Is it Otherness or an origin?
This paper also attempts to explore the three artists- diasporic lives
and to redefine their transnational identities. Hou Chin-lang, the
significance of his multiple-split images serve to highlight the intricate
relationships between his work and the surrounding family, and to
reveal his identity of his Taiwan “homeland". Yin Xin takes paintings
from the Western canon and subjects them to a process of
transformation through Chinese imagery. In the same period, Lin
Li-ling, transforms the transnational spirit of Yin Xin to symbolic
codes with neutered female bodies and tatoos, thus creates images that
challenge the boundaries of both gender and nationality.
Abstract: The main aim of the current study was to examine the
effect of emotional intelligence on retention. The study also aimed at
analyzing the role of job involvement, as a moderator, in the effect of
emotional intelligence on retention. Using data gathered from 241
employees working with hotels and tourism corporations listed in
Amman Stock Exchange in Jordan, emotional intelligence, job
involvement and retention were measured. Hierarchical regression
analyses were used to test the three main hypotheses. Results
indicated that retention was related to emotional intelligence.
Moreover, the study yielded support for the claim that job
involvement had a moderating effect on the relationship between
emotional intelligence and retention.
Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to contribute the
existing knowledge transfer and IT Outsourcing literature
specifically in the context of Malaysia by reviewing the current
practices of e-government IT outsourcing in Malaysia including the
issues and challenges faced by the public agencies in transferring the
knowledge during the engagement. This paper discusses various
factors and different theoretical model of knowledge transfer starting
from the traditional model to the recent model suggested by the
scholars. The present paper attempts to align organizational
knowledge from the knowledge-based view (KBV) and
organizational learning (OL) lens. This review could help shape the
direction of both future theoretical and empirical studies on inter-firm
knowledge transfer specifically on how KBV and OL perspectives
could play significant role in explaining the complex relationships
between the client and vendor in inter-firm knowledge transfer and
the role of organizational management information system and
Transactive Memory System (TMS) to facilitate the organizational
knowledge transferring process. Conclusion is drawn and further
research is suggested.
Abstract: This article provides empirical evidence on the effect
of domestic and international factors on the U.S. current account
deficit. Linear dynamic regression and vector autoregression models
are employed to estimate the relationships during the period from 1986
to 2011. The findings of this study suggest that the current and lagged
private saving rate and foreign current account for East Asian
economies have played a vital role in affecting the U.S. current
account. Additionally, using Granger causality tests and variance
decompositions, the change of the productivity growth and foreign
domestic demand are determined to influence significantly the change
of the U.S. current account. To summarize, the empirical relationship
between the U.S. current account deficit and its determinants is
sensitive to alternative regression models and specifications.
Abstract: Nevertheless the widespread application of finite
mixture models in segmentation, finite mixture model selection is
still an important issue. In fact, the selection of an adequate number
of segments is a key issue in deriving latent segments structures and
it is desirable that the selection criteria used for this end are effective.
In order to select among several information criteria, which may
support the selection of the correct number of segments we conduct a
simulation study. In particular, this study is intended to determine
which information criteria are more appropriate for mixture model
selection when considering data sets with only categorical
segmentation base variables. The generation of mixtures of
multinomial data supports the proposed analysis. As a result, we
establish a relationship between the level of measurement of
segmentation variables and some (eleven) information criteria-s
performance. The criterion AIC3 shows better performance (it
indicates the correct number of the simulated segments- structure
more often) when referring to mixtures of multinomial segmentation
base variables.
Abstract: Transport and land use are two systems that are
mutually influenced. Their interaction is a complex process
associated with continuous feedback. The paper examines the
existing land use around an under construction metro station of the
new metro network of Thessaloniki, Greece, through the use of field
investigations, around the station-s predefined location. Moreover,
except from the analytical land use recording, a sampling
questionnaire survey is addressed to several selected enterprises of
the study area. The survey aims to specify the characteristics of the
enterprises, the trip patterns of their employees and clients, as well as
the stated preferences towards the changes the new metro station is
considered to bring to the area. The interpretation of the interrelationships
among selected data from the questionnaire survey takes
place using the method of Principal Components Analysis for
Categorical Data. The followed methodology and the survey-s results
contribute to the enrichment of the relevant bibliography concerning
the way the creation of a new metro station can have an impact on the
land use pattern of an area, by examining the situation before the
operation of the station.
Abstract: Nigerian bread is baked with vitamin A fortified wheat flour. Study aimed at determining its contribution to preschoolers- vitamin A nutriture. A cross-sectional/experimental study was carried out in four poor-urban Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Metropolitan Lagos, Nigeria. A pretested food frequency questionnaire was administered to randomly selected mothers of 1600 preschoolers (24-59 months). Retinyl Palmitate content of fourteen bread samples randomly collected from bakeries in all LGAs was analyzed at 0 and 5 days at 25oC using High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Data analysis was done at p
Abstract: Voltage flicker problems have long existed in several
of the distribution areas served by the Taiwan Power Company. In
the past, those research results indicating that the estimated ΔV10
value based on the conventional method is significantly smaller than
the survey value. This paper is used to study the relationship between
the voltage flicker problems and harmonic power variation for the
power system with electric arc furnaces. This investigation discussed
thought the effect of harmonic power fluctuation with flicker
estimate value. The method of field measurement, statistics and
simulation is used. The survey results demonstrate that 10 ΔV
estimate must account for the effect of harmonic power variation.
Abstract: Sub-prime mortgage crisis which began in the US is
regarded as the most economic crisis since the Great Depression in the
early 20th century. Especially, hidden problems on efficient operation
of a business were disclosed at a time and many financial institutions
went bankrupt and filed for court receivership. The collapses of
physical market lead to bankruptcy of manufacturing and construction
businesses. This study is to analyze dynamic efficiency of construction
businesses during the five years at the turn of the global financial
crisis. By discovering the trend and stability of efficiency of a
construction business, this study-s objective is to improve
management efficiency of a construction business in the
ever-changing construction market. Variables were selected by
analyzing corporate information on top 20 construction businesses in
Korea and analyzed for static efficiency in 2008 and dynamic
efficiency between 2006 and 2010. Unlike other studies, this study
succeeded in deducing efficiency trend and stability of a construction
business for five years by using the DEA/Window model. Using the
analysis result, efficient and inefficient companies could be figured
out. In addition, relative efficiency among DMU was measured by
comparing the relationship between input and output variables of
construction businesses. This study can be used as a literature to
improve management efficiency for companies with low efficiency
based on efficiency analysis of construction businesses.
Abstract: This paper examines the relationships between and
among the various drivers of climate change that have both climatic
and ecological consequences for vegetation and land cover change in
arctic areas, particularly in arctic Alaska. It discusses the various
processes that have created spatial and climatic structures that have
facilitated observable vegetation and land cover changes in the
Arctic. Also, it indicates that the drivers of both climatic and
ecological changes in the Arctic are multi-faceted and operate in a
system with both positive and negative feedbacks that largely results
in further increases or decreases of the initial drivers of climatic and
vegetation change mainly at the local and regional scales. It
demonstrates that the impact of arctic warming on land cover change
and the Arctic ecosystems is not unidirectional and one dimensional
in nature but it represents a multi-directional and multi-dimensional
forces operating in a feedback system.
Abstract: Transient shape variation of a rotating liquid dropletis
simulated numerically. The three dimensional Navier-Stokes
equations were solved by using the level set method. The shape
variation from the sphere to the rotating ellipsoid, and to the two-robed
shapeare simulated, and the elongation of the two-robed droplet is
discussed. The two-robed shape after the initial transient is found to be
stable and the elongation is almost the same for the cases with different
initial rotation rate. The relationship between the elongation and the
rotation rate is obtained by averaging the transient shape variation. It is
shown that the elongation of two-robed shape is in good agreement
with the existing experimental data. It is found that the transient
numerical simulation is necessary for analyzing the largely elongated
two-robed shape of rotating droplet.
Abstract: Existing literature ondesign reasoning seems to give
either one sided accounts on expert design behaviour based on
internal processing. In the same way ecological theoriesseem to
focus one sidedly on external elementsthat result in a lack of unifying
design cognition theory. Although current extended design cognition
studies acknowledge the intellectual interaction between internal and
external resources, there still seems to be insufficient understanding
of the complexities involved in such interactive processes. As
such, this paper proposes a novelmulti-directional model for design
researchers tomap the complex and dynamic conduct controlling
behaviour in which both the computational and ecological
perspectives are integrated in a vertical manner. A clear distinction
between identified intentional and emerging physical drivers, and
relationships between them during the early phases of experts- design
process, is demonstrated by presenting a case study in which the
model was employed.
