Abstract: Cyclic delay diversity (CDD) is a simple technique to
intentionally increase frequency selectivity of channels for orthogonal
frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).This paper proposes a residual
carrier frequency offset (RFO) estimation scheme for OFDMbased
broadcasting system using CDD. In order to improve the RFO
estimation, this paper addresses a decision scheme of the amount of
cyclic delay and pilot pattern used to estimate the RFO. By computer
simulation, the proposed estimator is shown to benefit form propoerly
chosen delay parameter and perform robustly.
Abstract: The restoration of extinct ponds is considered as one
of ways to gain new retention capacities for water which is getting
much more important issue with respect to expected impacts of a
climate change. However, there are also other pressures on the
landscape which must be all taken into consideration when making a
decision on the possible restoration of extinct ponds. The research
presented here focuses besides others on the restoration of former
ponds which could be important for both the flood protection and
drought impacts prevention. The first step of the methodology
development for the assessment of such areas is the assessment of
their present state. In this paper, the results of land use types
assessment for 22 localities are presented. These results confirm the
assumption that the most present land use type in such areas is the
permanent grassland. However, the spectra of land use types present
in extinct pond areas is very diverse and include besides others also
airport areas and industry.
Abstract: This paper investigates the issue of building decision
trees from data with imprecise class values where imprecision is
encoded in the form of possibility distributions. The Information
Affinity similarity measure is introduced into the well-known gain
ratio criterion in order to assess the homogeneity of a set of
possibility distributions representing instances-s classes belonging to
a given training partition. For the experimental study, we proposed an
information affinity based performance criterion which we have used
in order to show the performance of the approach on well-known
benchmarks.
Abstract: This paper introduces an approach to construct a set of criteria for evaluating alternative options. Content analysis was used to collet criterion elements. Then the elements were classified and organized yielding to hierarchic structure. The reliability of the constructed criteria was evaluated in an experiment. Finally the criteria were used to evaluate alternative options indecision-making.
Abstract: Complexity, as a theoretical background has made it
easier to understand and explain the features and dynamic behavior
of various complex systems. As the common theoretical background
has confirmed, borrowing the terminology for design from the
natural sciences has helped to control and understand urban
complexity. Phenomena like self-organization, evolution and
adaptation are appropriate to describe the formerly inaccessible
characteristics of the complex environment in unpredictable bottomup
systems. Increased computing capacity has been a key element in
capturing the chaotic nature of these systems.
A paradigm shift in urban planning and architectural design has
forced us to give up the illusion of total control in urban
environment, and consequently to seek for novel methods for
steering the development. New methods using dynamic modeling
have offered a real option for more thorough understanding of
complexity and urban processes. At best new approaches may renew
the design processes so that we get a better grip on the complex
world via more flexible processes, support urban environmental
diversity and respond to our needs beyond basic welfare by liberating
ourselves from the standardized minimalism.
A complex system and its features are as such beyond human
ethics. Self-organization or evolution is either good or bad. Their
mechanisms are by nature devoid of reason. They are common in
urban dynamics in both natural processes and gas. They are features
of a complex system, and they cannot be prevented. Yet their
dynamics can be studied and supported.
The paradigm of complexity and new design approaches has been
criticized for a lack of humanity and morality, but the ethical
implications of scientific or computational design processes have not
been much discussed. It is important to distinguish the (unexciting)
ethics of the theory and tools from the ethics of computer aided
processes based on ethical decisions. Urban planning and architecture
cannot be based on the survival of the fittest; however, the natural
dynamics of the system cannot be impeded on grounds of being
“non-human".
In this paper the ethical challenges of using the dynamic models
are contemplated in light of a few examples of new architecture and
dynamic urban models and literature. It is suggested that ethical
challenges in computational design processes could be reframed
under the concepts of responsibility and transparency.
Abstract: The growing influence of service industries has
prompted greater attention being paid to service operations
management. However, service managers often have difficulty
articulating the veritable effects of their service innovation. Especially,
the performance evaluation process of service innovation problems
generally involves uncertain and imprecise data. This paper presents a
2-tuple fuzzy linguistic computing approach to dealing with
heterogeneous information and information loss problems while the
processes of subjective evaluation integration. The proposed method
based on group decision-making scenario to assist business managers
in measuring performance of service innovation manipulates the
heterogeneity integration processes and avoids the information loss
effectively.
Abstract: The entropy of intuitionistic fuzzy sets is used to indicate the degree of fuzziness of an interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set(IvIFS). In this paper, we deal with the entropies of IvIFS. Firstly, we propose a family of entropies on IvIFS with a parameter λ ∈ [0, 1], which generalize two entropy measures defined independently by Zhang and Wei, for IvIFS, and then we prove that the
new entropy is an increasing function with respect to the parameter λ. Furthermore, a new multiple attribute decision making (MADM) method using entropy-based attribute weights is proposed to deal with the decision making situations where the alternatives on attributes are expressed by IvIFS and the attribute weights information is unknown. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the applications of the proposed method.
Abstract: This paper explains a project based learning method where autonomous mini-robots are developed for research, education and entertainment purposes. In case of remote systems wireless sensors are developed in critical areas, which would collect data at specific time intervals, send the data to the central wireless node based on certain preferred information would make decisions to turn on or off a switch or control unit. Such information transfers hardly sums up to a few bytes and hence low data rates would suffice for such implementations. As a robot is a multidisciplinary platform, the interfacing issues involved are discussed in this paper. The paper is mainly focused on power supply, grounding and decoupling issues.
Abstract: Weather disaster events were frequent and caused loss
of lives and property in Taiwan recently. Excessive concentration of
population and lacking of integrated planning led to Taiwanese coastal
zone face the impacts of climate change directly. Comparing to many
countries which have already set up legislation, competent authorities
and national adaptation strategies, the ability of coastal management
adapting to climate change is still insufficient in Taiwan. Therefore, it
is necessary to establish a complete institutional arrangement for
coastal management due to climate change in order to protect
environment and sustain socio-economic development. This paper
firstly reviews the impact of climate change on Taiwanese coastal
zone. Secondly, development of Taiwanese institutional arrangement
of coastal management is introduced. Followed is the analysis of four
dimensions of legal basis, competent authority, scientific and financial
support and international cooperations of institutional arrangement.
The results show that Taiwanese government shall: 1) integrate climate
change issue into Coastal Act, Wetland Act and territorial planning
Act and pass them; 2) establish the high level competent authority for
coastal management; 3) set up the climate change disaster coordinate
platform; 4) link scientific information and decision markers; 5)
establish the climate change adjustment fund; 6) participate in
international climate change organizations and meetings actively; 7)
cooperate with near countries to exchange experiences.
Abstract: A model predictive controller based on recursive learning is proposed. In this SISO adaptive controller, a model is automatically updated using simple recursive equations. The identified models are then stored in the memory to be re-used in the future. The decision for model update is taken based on a new control performance index. The new controller allows the use of simple linear model predictive controllers in the control of nonlinear time varying processes.
Abstract: By introducing the concept of Oracle we propose an approach for improving the performance of genetic algorithms for large-scale asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problems. The results have shown that the proposed approach allows overcoming some traditional problems for creating efficient genetic algorithms.
Abstract: In most of the cases, natural disasters lead to the
necessity of evacuating people. The quality of evacuation
management is dramatically improved by the use of information
provided by decision support systems, which become indispensable
in case of large scale evacuation operations. This paper presents a
best practice case study. In November 2007, officers from the
Emergency Situations Inspectorate “Crisana" of Bihor County from
Romania participated to a cross-border evacuation exercise, when
700 people have been evacuated from Netherlands to Belgium. One
of the main objectives of the exercise was the test of four different
decision support systems. Afterwards, based on that experience,
software system called TEVAC (Trans Border Evacuation) has been
developed “in house" by the experts of this institution. This original
software system was successfully tested in September 2008, during
the deployment of the international exercise EU-HUROMEX 2008,
the scenario involving real evacuation of 200 persons from Hungary
to Romania. Based on the lessons learned and results, starting from
April 2009, the TEVAC software is used by all Emergency
Situations Inspectorates all over Romania.
Abstract: The effective machine-job assignment of injection
molding machines is very important for industry because it is not
only directly affects the quality of the product but also the
performance and lifetime of the machine as well. The phase of
machine selection was mostly done by professionals or experienced
planners, so the possibility of matching a job with an inappropriate
machine might occur when it was conducted by an inexperienced
person. It could lead to an uneconomical plan and defects. This
research aimed to develop a machine selection system for plastic
injection machines as a tool to help in decision making of the user.
This proposed system could be used both in normal times and in
times of emergency. Fuzzy logic principle is applied to deal with
uncertainty and mechanical factors in the selection of both quantity
and quality criteria. The six criteria were obtained from a plastic
manufacturer's case study to construct a system based on fuzzy logic
theory using MATLAB. The results showed that the system was able
to reduce the defects of Short Shot and Sink Mark to 24.0% and
8.0% and the total defects was reduced around 8.7% per month.
Abstract: Maintenance costs incurred on building differs. The
difference can be as results of the types, functions, age, building
health index, size, form height, location and complexity of the
building. These are contributing to the difficulty in maintenance
development of deterministic maintenance cost model. This paper is
concerns with reporting the preliminary findings on the creation of
building maintenance cost distributions for universities in Malaysia.
This study is triggered by the need to provide guides on maintenance
costs distributions for decision making. For this purpose, a survey
questionnaire was conducted to investigate the distribution of
maintenance costs in the universities. Altogether, responses were
received from twenty universities comprising both private and
publicly owned. The research found that engineering services,
roofing and finishes were the elements contributing the larger
segment of the maintenance costs. Furthermore, the study indicates
the significance of maintenance cost distribution as decision making
tool towards maintenance management.
Abstract: Cameron Highlands is known for upland tourism area
with vast natural wealth, mountainous landscape endowed with rich
diverse species as well as people traditions and cultures. With these
various resources, CH possesses an interesting visual and panorama
that can be offered to the tourist. However this benefit may not be
utilized without obtaining the understanding of existing landscape
structure and visual. Given a limited data, this paper attempts to
classify landscape visual of Cameron Highlands using land use and
contour data. Visual points of view were determined from the given
tourist attraction points in the CH Local Plan 2003-2015. The result
shows landscape visual and structure categories offered in the study
area. The result can be used for further analysis to determine the best
alternative tourist trails for tourism planning and decision making
using readily available data.
Abstract: Our study proposes an alternative method in building
Fuzzy Rule-Based System (FRB) from Support Vector Machine
(SVM). The first set of fuzzy IF-THEN rules is obtained through
an equivalence of the SVM decision network and the zero-ordered
Sugeno FRB type of the Adaptive Network Fuzzy Inference System
(ANFIS). The second set of rules is generated by combining the
first set based on strength of firing signals of support vectors using
Gaussian kernel. The final set of rules is then obtained from the
second set through input scatter partitioning. A distinctive advantage
of our method is the guarantee that the number of final fuzzy IFTHEN
rules is not more than the number of support vectors in the
trained SVM. The final FRB system obtained is capable of performing
classification with results comparable to its SVM counterpart, but it
has an advantage over the black-boxed SVM in that it may reveal
human comprehensible patterns.
Abstract: Decrease in hardware costs and advances in computer
networking technologies have led to increased interest in the use of
large-scale parallel and distributed computing systems. One of the
biggest issues in such systems is the development of effective
techniques/algorithms for the distribution of the processes/load of a
parallel program on multiple hosts to achieve goal(s) such as
minimizing execution time, minimizing communication delays,
maximizing resource utilization and maximizing throughput.
Substantive research using queuing analysis and assuming job
arrivals following a Poisson pattern, have shown that in a multi-host
system the probability of one of the hosts being idle while other host
has multiple jobs queued up can be very high. Such imbalances in
system load suggest that performance can be improved by either
transferring jobs from the currently heavily loaded hosts to the lightly
loaded ones or distributing load evenly/fairly among the hosts .The
algorithms known as load balancing algorithms, helps to achieve the
above said goal(s). These algorithms come into two basic categories -
static and dynamic. Whereas static load balancing algorithms (SLB)
take decisions regarding assignment of tasks to processors based on
the average estimated values of process execution times and
communication delays at compile time, Dynamic load balancing
algorithms (DLB) are adaptive to changing situations and take
decisions at run time.
The objective of this paper work is to identify qualitative
parameters for the comparison of above said algorithms. In future this
work can be extended to develop an experimental environment to
study these Load balancing algorithms based on comparative
parameters quantitatively.
Abstract: The element of justice or al-‘adl in the context of
Islamic critical thinking deals with the notion of justice in a thinking
process which critically rationalizes the truth in a fair and objective
manner with no irrelevant interference that can jeopardize a sound
judgment. This Islamic axiological element is vital in technological
decision making as it addresses the issues of religious values and
ethics that are primarily set to fulfill the purpose of human life on
earth. The main objective of this study was to examine and analyze
the perception of Muslim engineering students in Malaysian higher
education institutions towards the concept of al-‘adl as an essential
element of Islamic critical thinking. The study employed mixed
methods approach that comprises data collection from the
questionnaire survey and the interview responses. A total of 557
Muslim engineering undergraduates from six Malaysian universities
participated in the study. The study generally indicated that Muslim
engineering undergraduates in the higher institutions have rather
good comprehension and consciousness for al-‘adl with a slight
awareness on the importance of objective thinking. Nonetheless there
were a few items on the concept that have implied a comparatively
low perception on the rational justice in Islam as the means to grasp
the ultimate truth.
Abstract: The knowledge base of welding defect recognition is
essentially incomplete. This characteristic determines that the recognition results do not reflect the actual situation. It also has a further influence on the classification of welding quality. This paper is
concerned with the study of a rough set based method to reduce the influence and improve the classification accuracy. At first, a rough set
model of welding quality intelligent classification has been built. Both condition and decision attributes have been specified. Later on, groups
of the representative multiple compound defects have been chosen
from the defect library and then classified correctly to form the
decision table. Finally, the redundant information of the decision table has been reducted and the optimal decision rules have been reached. By this method, we are able to reclassify the misclassified defects to
the right quality level. Compared with the ordinary ones, this method
has higher accuracy and better robustness.
Abstract: In our modern world, more physical transactions are being substituted by electronic transactions (i.e. banking, shopping, and payments), many businesses and companies are performing most of their operations through the internet. Instead of having a physical commerce, internet visitors are now adapting to electronic commerce (e-Commerce). The ability of web users to reach products worldwide can be greatly benefited by creating friendly and personalized online business portals. Internet visitors will return to a particular website when they can find the information they need or want easily. Dealing with this human conceptualization brings the incorporation of Artificial/Computational Intelligence techniques in the creation of customized portals. From these techniques, Fuzzy-Set technologies can make many useful contributions to the development of such a human-centered endeavor as e-Commerce. The main objective of this paper is the implementation of a Paradigm for the Intelligent Design and Operation of Human-Computer interfaces. In particular, the paradigm is quite appropriate for the intelligent design and operation of software modules that display information (such Web Pages, graphic user interfaces GUIs, Multimedia modules) on a computer screen. The human conceptualization of the user personal information is analyzed throughout a Cascaded Fuzzy Inference (decision-making) System to generate the User Ascribe Qualities, which identify the user and that can be used to customize portals with proper Web links.
