Abstract: To reveal the temperature field distribution of disc
brake in downward belt conveyor, mathematical models of heat
transfer for disc brake were established combined with heat transfer
theory. Then, the simulation process was stated in detail and the
temperature field of disc brake under conditions of dynamic speed and
dynamic braking torque was numerically simulated by using ANSYS
software. Finally the distribution and variation laws of temperature
field in the braking process were analyzed. Results indicate that the
maximum surface temperature occurs at a time before the brake end
and there exist large temperature gradients in both radial and axial
directions, while it is relatively small in the circumferential direction.
Abstract: Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) has been
widely applied, but extracting SIFT feature is complicated and
time-consuming. In this paper, to meet the demand of the real-time
applications, SIFT is parallelized and optimized on cluster system,
which is named pSIFT. Redundancy storage and communication are
used for boundary data to improve the performance, and before
representation of feature descriptor, data reallocation is adopted to
keep load balance in pSIFT. Experimental results show that pSIFT
achieves good speedup and scalability.
Abstract: Renewable energy systems are becoming a topic of
great interest and investment in the world. In recent years wind
power generation has experienced a very fast development in the
whole world. For planning and successful implementations of good
wind power plant projects, wind potential measurements are
required. In these projects, of great importance is the effective choice
of the micro location for wind potential measurements, installation of
the measurement station with the appropriate measuring equipment,
its maintenance and analysis of the gained data on wind potential
characteristics. In this paper, a wavelet transform has been applied to
analyze the wind speed data in the context of insight in the
characteristics of the wind and the selection of suitable locations that
could be the subject of a wind farm construction. This approach
shows that it can be a useful tool in investigation of wind potential.
Abstract: Composite pins of rubber dust collected from tyre
retreading centres of trucks, cars and buses etc.and epoxy with
weight percentages of 10. 15, and 20 % of rubber (weight fractions of
9, 13 and 17 % respectively) have been prepared in house with the
help of a split wooden mould. The pins were tested in a pin-on-disc
wear monitor to determine the co-efficient of friction and weight
losses with varying speeds, loads and time. The wear volume and
wear rates have also been found out for all these three specimens.. It
is observed that all the specimens have exhibited very low coefficient
of friction and low wear rates under dry sliding condition. Out of the
above three samples tested, the specimen with 10 % rubber dust by
weight has shown lowest wear rates. However a peculiar result i.e
decreasing trend has been obtained with 20% reinforcement of rubber
in epoxy while rubbed against steel at varying speeds. This might
have occurred due to high surface finish of the disc and formation of
a thin transfer layer from the composite
Abstract: This paper presents a new problem solving approach
that is able to generate optimal policy solution for finite-state
stochastic sequential decision-making problems with high data
efficiency. The proposed algorithm iteratively builds and improves
an approximate Markov Decision Process (MDP) model along with
cost-to-go value approximates by generating finite length trajectories
through the state-space. The approach creates a synergy between an
approximate evolving model and approximate cost-to-go values to
produce a sequence of improving policies finally converging to the
optimal policy through an intelligent and structured search of the
policy space. The approach modifies the policy update step of the
policy iteration so as to result in a speedy and stable convergence to
the optimal policy. We apply the algorithm to a non-holonomic
mobile robot control problem and compare its performance with
other Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches, e.g., a) Q-learning,
b) Watkins Q(λ), c) SARSA(λ).
Abstract: The quality of short term load forecasting can improve the efficiency of planning and operation of electric utilities. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are employed for nonlinear short term load forecasting owing to their powerful nonlinear mapping capabilities. At present, there is no systematic methodology for optimal design and training of an artificial neural network. One has often to resort to the trial and error approach. This paper describes the process of developing three layer feed-forward large neural networks for short-term load forecasting and then presents a heuristic search algorithm for performing an important task of this process, i.e. optimal networks structure design. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used to develop the optimum large neural network structure and connecting weights for one-day ahead electric load forecasting problem. PSO is a novel random optimization method based on swarm intelligence, which has more powerful ability of global optimization. Employing PSO algorithms on the design and training of ANNs allows the ANN architecture and parameters to be easily optimized. The proposed method is applied to STLF of the local utility. Data are clustered due to the differences in their characteristics. Special days are extracted from the normal training sets and handled separately. In this way, a solution is provided for all load types, including working days and weekends and special days. The experimental results show that the proposed method optimized by PSO can quicken the learning speed of the network and improve the forecasting precision compared with the conventional Back Propagation (BP) method. Moreover, it is not only simple to calculate, but also practical and effective. Also, it provides a greater degree of accuracy in many cases and gives lower percent errors all the time for STLF problem compared to BP method. Thus, it can be applied to automatically design an optimal load forecaster based on historical data.
Abstract: An attempt has been made to investigate the
machinability of zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) inserts while
turning AISI 4340 steel. The insert was prepared by powder
metallurgy process route and the machining experiments were
performed based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) design
called Central Composite Design (CCD). The mathematical model of
flank wear, cutting force and surface roughness have been developed
using second order regression analysis. The adequacy of model has
been carried out based on Analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques.
It can be concluded that cutting speed and feed rate are the two most
influential factor for flank wear and cutting force prediction. For
surface roughness determination, the cutting speed & depth of cut
both have significant contribution. Key parameters effect on each
response has also been presented in graphical contours for choosing
the operating parameter preciously. 83% desirability level has been
achieved using this optimized condition.
Abstract: Design and implementation of a novel B-ACOSD CFAR algorithm is presented in this paper. It is proposed for detecting radar target in log-normal distribution environment. The BACOSD detector is capable to detect automatically the number interference target in the reference cells and detect the real target by an adaptive threshold. The detector is implemented as a System on Chip on FPGA Altera Stratix II using parallelism and pipelining technique. For a reference window of length 16 cells, the experimental results showed that the processor works properly with a processing speed up to 115.13MHz and processing time0.29 ┬Ás, thus meets real-time requirement for a typical radar system.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an improvement of pattern
growth-based PrefixSpan algorithm, called I-PrefixSpan. The general idea of I-PrefixSpan is to use sufficient data structure for Seq-Tree
framework and separator database to reduce the execution time and
memory usage. Thus, with I-PrefixSpan there is no in-memory database stored after index set is constructed. The experimental result
shows that using Java 2, this method improves the speed of PrefixSpan up to almost two orders of magnitude as well as the memory usage to more than one order of magnitude.
Abstract: It is important to remove manganese from water
because of its effects on human and the environment. Human
activities are one of the biggest contributors for excessive manganese
concentration in the environment. The proposed method to remove
manganese in aqueous solution by using adsorption as in carbon
nanotubes (CNT) at different parameters: The parameters are CNT
dosage, pH, agitation speed and contact time. Different pHs are pH
6.0, pH 6.5, pH 7.0, pH 7.5 and pH 8.0, CNT dosages are 5mg,
6.25mg, 7.5mg, 8.75mg or 10mg, contact time are 10 min, 32.5 min,
55 min, 87.5 min and 120 min while the agitation speeds are 100rpm,
150rpm, 200rpm, 250rpm and 300rpm. The parameters chosen for
experiments are based on experimental design done by using Central
Composite Design, Design Expert 6.0 with 4 parameters, 5 levels and
2 replications. Based on the results, condition set at pH 7.0, agitation
speed of 300 rpm, 7.5mg and contact time 55 minutes gives the
highest removal with 75.5%. From ANOVA analysis in Design
Expert 6.0, the residual concentration will be very much affected by
pH and CNT dosage. Initial manganese concentration is 1.2mg/L
while the lowest residual concentration achieved is 0.294mg/L,
which almost satisfy DOE Malaysia Standard B requirement.
Therefore, further experiments must be done to remove manganese
from model water to the required standard (0.2 mg/L) with the initial
concentration set to 0.294 mg/L.
Abstract: Mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile
nodes communicating through wireless channels without any existing
network infrastructure or centralized administration. Because of the
limited transmission range of wireless network interfaces, multiple
"hops" may be needed to exchange data across the network. In order
to facilitate communication within the network, a routing protocol is
used to discover routes between nodes. The primary goal of such an
ad hoc network routing protocol is correct and efficient route
establishment between a pair of nodes so that messages may be
delivered in a timely manner. Route construction should be done
with a minimum of overhead and bandwidth consumption. This paper
examines two routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks– the
Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), the table- driven
protocol and the Ad hoc On- Demand Distance Vector routing
(AODV), an On –Demand protocol and evaluates both protocols
based on packet delivery fraction, normalized routing load, average
delay and throughput while varying number of nodes, speed and
pause time.
Abstract: This paper provides a scheme to improve the read efficiency of anti-collision algorithm in EPCglobal UHF Class-1 Generation-2 RFID standard. In this standard, dynamic frame slotted ALOHA is specified to solve the anti-collision problem. Also, the Q-algorithm with a key parameter C is adopted to dynamically adjust the frame sizes. In the paper, we split the C parameter into two parameters to increase the read speed and derive the optimal values of the two parameters through simulations. The results indicate our method outperforms the original Q-algorithm.
Abstract: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the techniques for high speed data rate communication with main consideration for 4G and 5G systems. In OFDM, there are several mapping schemes which provide a way of parallel transmission. In this paper, comparisons of mapping schemes used by some standards have been made and also has been discussed about the performance of the non-conventional modulation technique. The Comparisons of Bit Error Rate (BER) performances for conventional and non-conventional modulation schemes have been done using MATLAB software. Mentioned schemes used in OFDM system can be selected on the basis of the requirement of power or spectrum efficiency and BER analysis.
Abstract: Efficient modulo 2n+1 adders are important for
several applications including residue number system, digital signal
processors and cryptography algorithms. In this paper we present a
novel modulo 2n+1 addition algorithm for a recently represented
number system. The proposed approach is introduced for the
reduction of the power dissipated. In a conventional modulo 2n+1
adder, all operands have (n+1)-bit length. To avoid using (n+1)-bit
circuits, the diminished-1 and carry save diminished-1 number
systems can be effectively used in applications. In the paper, we also
derive two new architectures for designing modulo 2n+1 adder, based
on n-bit ripple-carry adder. The first architecture is a faster design
whereas the second one uses less hardware. In the proposed method,
the special treatment required for zero operands in Diminished-1
number system is removed. In the fastest modulo 2n+1 adders in
normal binary system, there are 3-operand adders. This problem is
also resolved in this paper. The proposed architectures are compared
with some efficient adders based on ripple-carry adder and highspeed
adder. It is shown that the hardware overhead and power
consumption will be reduced. As well as power reduction, in some
cases, power-delay product will be also reduced.
Abstract: Customer-supplier collaboration enables firms to
achieve greater success than acting independently. Nevertheless, not
many firms have fully utilized the potential of collaboration. This
paper presents organizational and human related success factors for
collaboration in manufacturing supply chains in casting industry. Our
research approach was a case study including multiple cases. Data
was gathered by interviews and group discussions in two different
research projects. In the first research project we studied seven firms
and in the second five. It was found that the success factors are
interrelated, in other words, organizational and human factors
together enable success but not any of them alone. Some of the found
success factors are a culture of following agreements, and a speed of
informing the partner about changes affecting to the product or the
delivery chain.
Abstract: Nonlinear and unbalance loads in three phase
networks create harmonics and losses. Active and passive filters are
used for elimination or reduction of these effects. Passive filters have
some limitations. For example, they are designed only for a specific
frequency and they may cause to resonance in the network at the
point of common coupling. The other drawback of a passive filter is
that the sizes of required elements are normally large. The active
filter can improve some of limitations of passive filter for example;
they can eliminate more than one harmonic and don't cause resonance
in the network. In this paper inverter analysis have been done
simultaneously in three phase and the RL impedance of the line have
been considered. A sliding mode control based on energy feedback of
capacitors is employed in the design with this method, the dynamic
speed of the filter is improved effectively and harmonics and load
unbalance is compensating quickly.
Abstract: Chatter vibration has been a troublesome problem
for a machine tool toward the high precision and high speed machining.
Essentially, the machining performance is determined by the dynamic
characteristics of the machine tool structure and dynamics of cutting
process, which can further be identified in terms of the stability lobe
diagram. Therefore, realization on the machine tool dynamic behavior
can help to enhance the cutting stability. To assess the dynamic
characteristics and machining stability of a vertical milling system
under the influence of a linear guide, this study developed a finite
element model integrated the modeling of linear components with the
implementation of contact stiffness at the rolling interface. Both the
finite element simulations and experimental measurements reveal that
the linear guide with different preload greatly affects the vibration
behavior and milling stability of the vertical column spindle head
system, which also clearly indicate that the predictions of the
machining stability agree well with the cutting tests. It is believed that
the proposed model can be successfully applied to evaluate the
dynamics performance of machine tool systems of various
configurations.
Abstract: Power system stabilizers (PSS) must be capable of providing appropriate stabilization signals over a broad range of
operating conditions and disturbance. Traditional PSS rely on robust
linear design method in an attempt to cover a wider range of operating
condition. Expert or rule-based controllers have also been proposed.
Recently fuzzy logic (FL) as a novel robust control
design method has shown promising results. The emphasis in fuzzy
control design center is around uncertainties in the system parameters
& operating conditions. In this paper a novel Robust Fuzzy Logic Power
System Stabilizer (RFLPSS) design is proposed The RFLPSS
basically utilizes only one measurable Δω signal as input
(generator shaft speed).
The speed signal is discretized resulting in three inputs to the
RFLPSS. There are six rules for the fuzzification and two rules for
defuzzification. To provide robustness, additional signal namely,
speed are used as inputs to RFLPSS enabling appropriate gain
adjustments for the three RFLPSS inputs. Simulation studies
show the superior performance of the RFLPSS compared
with an optimally designed conventional PSS and discrete mode FLPSS.
Abstract: This paper introduces and proves new concept of salt
dissolving in water as very tiny solid sodium chloride particles of
nanovolumes, from this point of view salt water can be desalinated by
collision with special surface characterized by smoothness upon nano
level, high rigidity, high hardness under appropriate conditions of
water launching in the form of thin laminar flow under suitable speed
and angle of incidence to get desalinated water.
