Abstract: The paper reviews the relationship between spatial
and transportation planning in the Southern African Development
Community (SADC) region of Sub-Saharan Africa. It argues that
most urbanisation in the region has largely occurred subsequent to
the 1950s and, accordingly, urban development has been
profoundly and negatively affected by the (misguided) spatial and
institutional tenets of modernism. It demonstrates how a
considerable amount of the poor performance of these settlements
can be directly attributed to this. Two factors in particular about the
planning systems are emphasized: the way in which programmatic
land-use planning lies at the heart of both spatial and transportation
planning; and the way on which transportation and spatial planning
have been separated into independent processes. In the final
section, the paper identifies ways of improving the planning
system. Firstly, it identifies the performance qualities which
Southern African settlements should be seeking to achieve.
Secondly, it focuses on two necessary arenas of change: the need to
replace programmatic land-use planning practices with structuralspatial
approaches; and it makes a case for making urban corridors
a spatial focus of integrated planning, as a way of beginning the
restructuring and intensification of settlements which are currently
characterised by sprawl, fragmentation and separation
Abstract: This paper presents the impact study of GTO Controlled Series Capacitor (GCSC) parameters on measured impedance (Zseen) by MHO distance relays for single transmission line high voltage 220 kV in the presence of single phase to earth fault with fault resistance (RF). The study deals with a 220 kV single electrical transmission line of Eastern Algerian transmission networks at Group Sonelgaz (Algerian Company of Electrical and Gas) compensated by series Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) i.e. GCSC connected at midpoint of the transmission line. The transmitted active and reactive powers are controlled by three GCSC-s. The effects of maximum reactive power injected as well as injected maximum voltage by GCSC on distance relays measured impedance is treated. The simulations results investigate the effects of GCSC injected parameters: variable reactance (XGCSC), variable voltage (VGCSC) and reactive power injected (QGCSC) on measured resistance and reactance in the presence of earth fault with resistance fault varied between 5 to 50 Ω for three cases study.
Abstract: One of the criteria in production scheduling is Make
Span, minimizing this criteria causes more efficiently use of the
resources specially machinery and manpower. By assigning some
budget to some of the operations the operation time of these activities
reduces and affects the total completion time of all the operations
(Make Span). In this paper this issue is practiced in parallel flow
shops. At first we convert parallel flow shop to a network model and
by using a linear programming approach it is identified in order to
minimize make span (the completion time of the network) which
activities (operations) are better to absorb the predetermined and
limited budget. Minimizing the total completion time of all the
activities in the network is equivalent to minimizing make span in
production scheduling.
Abstract: NFκB activation plays a crucial role in anti-apoptotic responses in response to the apoptotic signaling during tumor necrosis factor (TNFa) stimulation in Multiple Myeloma (MM). Although several drugs have been found effective for the treatment of MM by mainly inhibiting NFκB pathway, there are no any quantitative or qualitative results of comparison assessment on inhibition effect between different single drugs or drug combinations. Computational modeling is becoming increasingly indispensable for applied biological research mainly because it can provide strong quantitative predicting power. In this study, a novel computational pathway modeling approach is employed to comparably assess the inhibition effects of specific single drugs and drug combinations on the NFκB pathway in MM, especially the prediction of synergistic drug combinations.
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are currently
receiving significant attention due to their unlimited potential. These
networks are used for various applications, such as habitat
monitoring, automation, agriculture, and security. The efficient nodeenergy
utilization is one of important performance factors in wireless
sensor networks because sensor nodes operate with limited battery
power. In this paper, we proposed the MiSense hierarchical cluster
based routing algorithm (MiCRA) to extend the lifetime of sensor
networks and to maintain a balanced energy consumption of nodes.
MiCRA is an extension of the HEED algorithm with two levels of
cluster heads. The performance of the proposed protocol has been
examined and evaluated through a simulation study. The simulation
results clearly show that MiCRA has a better performance in terms of
lifetime than HEED. Indeed, MiCRA our proposed protocol can
effectively extend the network lifetime without other critical
overheads and performance degradation. It has been noted that there
is about 35% of energy saving for MiCRA during the clustering
process and 65% energy savings during the routing process compared
to the HEED algorithm.
Abstract: This paper presents two simplified models to
determine nodal voltages in power distribution networks. These
models allow estimating the impact of the installation of reactive
power compensations equipments like fixed or switched capacitor
banks. The procedure used to develop the models is similar to the
procedure used to develop linear power flow models of transmission
lines, which have been widely used in optimization problems of
operation planning and system expansion. The steady state non-linear
load flow equations are approximated by linear equations relating the
voltage amplitude and currents. The approximations of the linear
equations are based on the high relationship between line resistance
and line reactance (ratio R/X), which is valid for power distribution
networks. The performance and accuracy of the models are evaluated
through comparisons with the exact results obtained from the
solution of the load flow using two test networks: a hypothetical
network with 23 nodes and a real network with 217 nodes.
Abstract: Background: Dialign is a DNA/Protein alignment tool
for performing pairwise and multiple pairwise alignments through the
comparison of gap-free segments (fragments) between sequence
pairs. An alignment of two sequences is a chain of fragments, i.e
local gap-free pairwise alignments, with the highest total score.
METHOD: A new approach is defined in this article which relies on
the concept of using three-dimensional fragments – i.e. local threeway
alignments -- in the alignment process instead of twodimensional
ones. These three-dimensional fragments are gap-free
alignments constituting of equal-length segments belonging to three
distinct sequences. RESULTS: The obtained results showed good
improvments over the performance of DIALIGN.
Abstract: The dynamics of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) traffic
over Ethernet between two computers are analyzed using nonlinear
dynamics which shows that there are two clear regimes in the data
flow: free flow and saturated. The two most important variables
affecting this are the packet size and packet flow rate. However,
this transition is due to a transcritical bifurcation rather than phase
transition in models such as in vehicle traffic or theorized large-scale
computer network congestion. It is hoped this model will help lay
the groundwork for further research on the dynamics of networks,
especially computer networks.
Abstract: Developing countries are facing a problem of slums and there appears to be no fool proof solution to eradicate them. For improving the quality of life there are three approaches of slum development and In-situ up-gradation approach is found to be the best one, while the relocation approach has proved to be failure. Factors responsible for failure of relocation projects are needed to be assessed, which is the basic aim of the paper. Factors responsible for failure of relocation projects are loss of livelihood, security of tenure and inefficiency of the Government. These factors are traced out & mapped from the examples of Western & Indian cities. National habitat, Resettlement policy emphasized relationship between shelter and work place. SRA has identified 55 slums for relocation due reservation of land uses, security of tenure and non- notified status of slums. Abstract: High speed networks provide realtime variable bit rate
service with diversified traffic flow characteristics and quality
requirements. The variable bit rate traffic has stringent delay and
packet loss requirements. The burstiness of the correlated traffic
makes dynamic buffer management highly desirable to satisfy the
Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper presents an
algorithm for optimization of adaptive buffer allocation scheme for
traffic based on loss of consecutive packets in data-stream and buffer
occupancy level. Buffer is designed to allow the input traffic to be
partitioned into different priority classes and based on the input
traffic behavior it controls the threshold dynamically. This algorithm
allows input packets to enter into buffer if its occupancy level is less
than the threshold value for priority of that packet. The threshold is
dynamically varied in runtime based on packet loss behavior. The
simulation is run for two priority classes of the input traffic –
realtime and non-realtime classes. The simulation results show that
Adaptive Partial Buffer Sharing (ADPBS) has better performance
than Static Partial Buffer Sharing (SPBS) and First In First Out
(FIFO) queue under the same traffic conditions.
Abstract: Due to the ever growing amount of publications about
protein-protein interactions, information extraction from text is
increasingly recognized as one of crucial technologies in
bioinformatics. This paper presents a Protein Interaction Extraction
System using a Link Grammar Parser from biomedical abstracts
(PIELG). PIELG uses linkage given by the Link Grammar Parser to
start a case based analysis of contents of various syntactic roles as
well as their linguistically significant and meaningful combinations.
The system uses phrasal-prepositional verbs patterns to overcome
preposition combinations problems. The recall and precision are
74.4% and 62.65%, respectively. Experimental evaluations with two
other state-of-the-art extraction systems indicate that PIELG system
achieves better performance. For further evaluation, the system is
augmented with a graphical package (Cytoscape) for extracting
protein interaction information from sequence databases. The result
shows that the performance is remarkably promising.
Abstract: In this paper a new approach to face recognition is
presented that achieves double dimension reduction, making the
system computationally efficient with better recognition results and
out perform common DCT technique of face recognition. In pattern
recognition techniques, discriminative information of image
increases with increase in resolution to a certain extent, consequently
face recognition results change with change in face image resolution
and provide optimal results when arriving at a certain resolution
level. In the proposed model of face recognition, initially image
decimation algorithm is applied on face image for dimension
reduction to a certain resolution level which provides best
recognition results. Due to increased computational speed and feature
extraction potential of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), it is
applied on face image. A subset of coefficients of DCT from low to
mid frequencies that represent the face adequately and provides best
recognition results is retained. A tradeoff between decimation factor,
number of DCT coefficients retained and recognition rate with
minimum computation is obtained. Preprocessing of the image is
carried out to increase its robustness against variations in poses and
illumination level. This new model has been tested on different
databases which include ORL , Yale and EME color database.
Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between 10
year bond value, Yen/U.S dollar exchange rate, non-farm payrolls (all
employs) and crude oil to U.S. Dow Jones Sustainability Index. A
GARCH model is used to test these relationships for the period
January 1st 1999 to January 31st 2008 using monthly data. Results
show that an increase of the 10 year bond and non farm payrolls (all
employs) lead to an increase of the D.J.S.I returns. On the contrary
the volatility of the Yen/U.S dollar exchange rates as well as the
increase of crude oil returns has negative effects on the U.S D.J.S.I
returns. This study aims at assisting investors to understand the
influences certain macroeconomic indicators have on the companies-
stock returns as reported by the D.J.S.I.
Abstract: The major objective of this paper is to introduce a new method to select genes from DNA microarray data. As criterion to select genes we suggest to measure the local changes in the correlation graph of each gene and to select those genes whose local changes are largest. More precisely, we calculate the correlation networks from DNA microarray data of cervical cancer whereas each network represents a tissue of a certain tumor stage and each node in the network represents a gene. From these networks we extract one tree for each gene by a local decomposition of the correlation network. The interpretation of a tree is that it represents the n-nearest neighbor genes on the n-th level of a tree, measured by the Dijkstra distance, and, hence, gives the local embedding of a gene within the correlation network. For the obtained trees we measure the pairwise similarity between trees rooted by the same gene from normal to cancerous tissues. This evaluates the modification of the tree topology due to tumor progression. Finally, we rank the obtained similarity values from all tissue comparisons and select the top ranked genes. For these genes the local neighborhood in the correlation networks changes most between normal and cancerous tissues. As a result we find that the top ranked genes are candidates suspected to be involved in tumor growth. This indicates that our method captures essential information from the underlying DNA microarray data of cervical cancer.
Abstract: A satured liquid is warmed until boiling in a parallelepipedic boiler. The heat is supplied in a liquid through the horizontal bottom of the boiler, the other walls being adiabatic. During the process of boiling, the liquid evaporates through its free surface by deforming it. This surface which subdivides the boiler into two regions occupied on both sides by the boiled liquid (broth) and its vapor which surmounts it. The broth occupying the region and its vapor the superior region. A two- fluids model is used to describe the dynamics of the broth, its vapor and their interface. In this model, the broth is treated as a monophasic fluid (homogeneous model) and form with its vapor adiphasic pseudo fluid (two-fluid model). Furthermore, the interface is treated as a zone of mixture characterized by superficial void fraction noted α* . The aim of this article is to describe the dynamics of the interface between the boiled fluid and its vapor within a boiler. The resolution of the problem allowed us to show the evolution of the broth and the level of the liquid.
Abstract: Influence of octane and benzene on plant cell
ultrastructure and enzymes of basic metabolism, such as nitrogen
assimilation and energy generation have been studied. Different
plants: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and alfalfa (Medicago
sativa); crops- maize (Zea mays L.) and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris);
shrubs – privet (Ligustrum sempervirens) and trifoliate orange
(Poncirus trifoliate); trees - poplar (Populus deltoides) and white
mulberry (Morus alba L.) were exposed to hydrocarbons of different
concentrations (1, 10 and 100 mM). Destructive changes in bean and
maize leaves cells ultrastructure under the influence of benzene
vapour were revealed at the level of photosynthetic and energy
generation subcellular organells. Different deviations at the level of
subcellular organelles structure and distribution were observed in
alfalfa and ryegrass root cells under the influence of benzene and
octane, absorbed through roots. The level of destructive changes is
concentration dependent. Benzene at low 1 and 10 mM concentration
caused the increase in glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity in
maize roots and leaves and in poplar and mulberry shoots, though to
higher extent in case of lower, 1mM concentration. The induction
was more intensive in plant roots. The highest tested 100mM
concentration of benzene was inhibitory to the enzyme in all plants.
Octane caused induction of GDH in all grassy plants at all tested
concentrations; however the rate of induction decreased parallel to
increase of the hydrocarbon concentration. Octane at concentration 1
mM caused induction of GDH in privet, trifoliate and white mulberry
shoots. The highest, 100mM octane was characterized by inhibitory
effect to GDH activity in all plants. Octane had inductive effect on
malate dehydrogenase in almost all plants and tested concentrations,
indicating the intensification of Trycarboxylic Acid Cycle.
The data could be suggested for elaboration of criteria for plant
selection for phytoremediation of oil hydrocarbons contaminated
soils.
Abstract: In an assessment of the extractability of metals in
green liquor dregs from the chemical recovery circuit of semichemical
pulp mill, extractable concentrations of heavy metals in
artificial gastric fluid were between 10 (Ni) and 717 (Zn) times
higher than those in artificial sweat fluid. Only Al (6.7 mg/kg; d.w.),
Ni (1.2 mg/kg; d.w.) and Zn (1.8 mg/kg; d.w.) showed extractability
in the artificial sweat fluid, whereas Al (730 mg/kg; d.w.), Ba (770
mg/kg; d.w.) and Zn (1290 mg/kg; d.w.) showed clear extractability
in the artificial gastric fluid. As certain heavy metals were clearly
soluble in the artificial gastric fluid, the careful handling of this
residue is recommended in order to prevent the penetration of green
liquor dregs across the human gastrointestinal tract.
Abstract: We have developed a microfluidic device system for the continuous producting of nanoparticles, and we have clarified the relationship between the mixing performance of reactors and the particle size. First, we evaluated the mixing performance of reactors by carring out the Villermaux–Dushman reaction and determined the experimental conditions for producing AgCl nanoparticles. Next, we produced AgCl nanoparticles and evaluated the mixing performance and the particle size. We found that as the mixing performance improves the size of produced particles decreases and the particle size distribution becomes sharper. We produced AgCl nanoparticles with a size of 86 nm using the microfluidic device that had the best mixing performance among the three reactors we tested in this study; the coefficient of variation (Cv) of the size distribution of the produced nanoparticles was 26.1%.
Abstract: The purpose of research was to know the role of
immunogenic protein of 49 kDa from V.alginolyticus which capable
to initiate molecule expression of MHC Class II in receptor of
Cromileptes altivelis. The method used was in vivo experimental
research through testing of immunogenic protein 49 kDa from
V.alginolyticus at Cromileptes altivelis (size of 250 - 300 grams)
using 3 times booster by injecting an immunogenic protein in a
intramuscular manner. Response of expressed MHC molecule was
shown using immunocytochemistry method and SEM. Results
indicated that adhesin V.alginolyticus 49 kDa which have
immunogenic character could trigger expression of MHC class II on
receptor of grouper and has been proven by staining using
immunocytochemistry and SEM with labeling using antibody anti
MHC (anti mouse). This visible expression based on binding between
epitopes antigen and antibody anti MHC in the receptor. Using
immunocytochemistry, intracellular response of MHC to in vivo
induction of immunogenic adhesin from V.alginolyticus was shown.
Abstract: If price and quantity are the fundamental building
blocks of any theory of market interactions, the importance of trading
volume in understanding the behavior of financial markets is clear.
However, while many economic models of financial markets have
been developed to explain the behavior of prices -predictability,
variability, and information content- far less attention has been
devoted to explaining the behavior of trading volume. In this article,
we hope to expand our understanding of trading volume by
developing a new measure of herding behavior based on a cross
sectional dispersion of volumes betas. We apply our measure to the
Toronto stock exchange using monthly data from January 2000 to
December 2002. Our findings show that the herd phenomenon
consists of three essential components: stationary herding, intentional
herding and the feedback herding.
