Abstract: In this study, a 3D combustion chamber was simulated
using FLUENT 6.32. Aims to obtain accurate information about the
profile of the combustion in the furnace and also check the effect of
oxygen enrichment on the combustion process. Oxygen enrichment is
an effective way to reduce combustion pollutant. The flow rate of air
to fuel ratio is varied as 1.3, 3.2 and 5.1 and the oxygen enriched
flow rates are 28, 54 and 68 lit/min. Combustion simulations
typically involve the solution of the turbulent flows with heat
transfer, species transport and chemical reactions. It is common to
use the Reynolds-averaged form of the governing equation in
conjunction with a suitable turbulence model. The 3D Reynolds
Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations with standard k-ε
turbulence model are solved together by Fluent 6.3 software. First
order upwind scheme is used to model governing equations and the
SIMPLE algorithm is used as pressure velocity coupling. Species
mass fractions at the wall are assumed to have zero normal
gradients.Results show that minimum mole fraction of CO2 happens
when the flow rate ratio of air to fuel is 5.1. Additionally, in a fixed
oxygen enrichment condition, increasing the air to fuel ratio will
increase the temperature peak. As a result, oxygen-enrichment can
reduce the CO2 emission at this kind of furnace in high air to fuel
rates.
Abstract: This paper reports on the results of experimental
investigations of flash evaporation from superheated jet issues
vertically upward from a round straight nozzle of 81.3 mm diameter.
For the investigated range of jet superheat degree and velocity, it was
shown that flash evaporation enhances with initial temperature
increase. Due to the increase of jet inertia and subsequently the delay
of jet shattering, increase of jet velocity was found to result in
increase of evaporation "delay period". An empirical equation
predicts the jet evaporation completion height was developed, this
equation is thought to be useful in designing the flash evaporation
chamber. In attempts for enhancement of flash evaporation, use of
steel wire mesh located at short distance downstream was found
effective with no consequent pressure drop.
Abstract: The aerodynamics characteristics of a blended-wing body (BWB) aircraft were obtained in Universiti Teknologi MARA low speed wind tunnel. The scaled-down of BWB model consisted of a canard as its horizontal stabilizer. There were four canards with different aspect ratio used in the experiments. Canard setting angles were varied from -20q to 20q. All tests were conducted at velocity of 35 m/s, with Mach number 0.1. At low angles of attacks, the increment of lift slope for various canards aspect ratio is small and almost constant. Higher canard aspect ratio will cause higher drag. However, canard has a high effect to the moment at zero lift, CM,0.The visualization using mini tuff was performed to observe the airflow at the upper surface of canard. Abstract: This analysis investigates the distortion of flow
measurement and the increase of cavitation along orifice
flowmeter. The analysis using the numerical method (CFD)
validated the distortion of flow measurement through the inlet
velocity profile considering the convergence and grid
dependency. Realizable k-e model was selected and y+ was
about 50 in this numerical analysis. This analysis also estimated
the vulnerability of cavitation effect due to inlet velocity profile.
The investigation concludes that inclined inlet velocity profile
could vary the pressure which was measured at pressure tab
near pipe wall and it led to distort the pressure values ranged
from -3.8% to 5.3% near the orifice plate and to make the
increase of cavitation. The investigation recommends that the
fully developed inlet velocity flow is beneficial to accurate flow
measurement in orifice flowmeter.
Abstract: A new numerical method for solving the twodimensional,
steady, incompressible, viscous flow equations on a
Curvilinear staggered grid is presented in this paper. The proposed
methodology is finite difference based, but essentially takes
advantage of the best features of two well-established numerical
formulations, the finite difference and finite volume methods. Some
weaknesses of the finite difference approach are removed by
exploiting the strengths of the finite volume method. In particular,
the issue of velocity-pressure coupling is dealt with in the proposed
finite difference formulation by developing a pressure correction
equation in a manner similar to the SIMPLE approach commonly
used in finite volume formulations. However, since this is purely a
finite difference formulation, numerical approximation of fluxes is
not required. Results obtained from the present method are based on
the first-order upwind scheme for the convective terms, but the
methodology can easily be modified to accommodate higher order
differencing schemes.
Abstract: The numerical simulation of the slip effect via
vicoelastic fluid for 4:1 contraction problem is investigated with
regard to kinematic behaviors of streamlines and stress tensor by
models of the Navier-Stokes and Oldroyd-B equations. Twodimensional
spatial reference system of incompressible creeping flow
with and without slip velocity is determined and the finite element
method of a semi-implicit Taylor-Galerkin pressure-correction is
applied to compute the problem of this Cartesian coordinate system
including the schemes of velocity gradient recovery method and the
streamline-Upwind / Petrov-Galerkin procedure. The slip effect at
channel wall is added to calculate after each time step in order to
intend the alteration of flow path. The result of stress values and the
vortices are reduced by the optimum slip coefficient of 0.1 with near
the outcome of analytical solution.
Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases, principally atherosclerosis, are responsible for 30% of world deaths. Atherosclerosis is due to the formation of plaque. The fatty plaque may be at risk of rupture, leading typically to stroke and heart attack. The plaque is usually associated with a high degree of lumen reduction, called a stenosis.It is increasingly recognized that the initiation and progression of disease and the occurrence of clinical events is a complex interplay between the local biomechanical environment and the local vascular biology. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow behavior through a stenosed artery. A physical experiment was performed using an artery model and blood analogue fluid. An axisymmetric model constructed consists of contraction and expansion region that follow a mathematical form of cosine function. A 30% diameter reduction was used in this study. The flow field was measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Spherical particles with 20μm diameter were seeded in a water-glycerol-NaCl mixture. Steady flow Reynolds numbers are 250. The area of interest is the region after the stenosis where the flow separation occurs. The velocity field was measured and the velocity gradient was investigated. There was high particle concentration in the recirculation zone. High velocity gradient formed immediately after the stenosis throat created a lift force that enhanced particle migration to the flow separation area.
Abstract: Methanol-to-olefins coupled with transformation of
coal or natural gas to methanol gives an interesting and promising way
to produce ethylene and propylene. To investigate solid concentration
in gas-solid fluidized bed for methanol-to-olefins process catalyzed by
SAPO-34, a cold model experiment system is established in this paper.
The system comprises a gas distributor in a 300mm internal diameter
and 5000mm height acrylic column, the fiber optic probe system and
series of cyclones. The experiments are carried out at ambient
conditions and under different superficial gas velocity ranging from
0.3930m/s to 0.7860m/s and different initial bed height ranging from
600mm to 1200mm. The effects of radial distance, axial distance,
superficial gas velocity, initial bed height on solid concentration in the
bed are discussed. The effects of distributor shape and porosity on
solid concentration are also discussed. The time-averaged solid
concentration profiles under different conditions are obtained.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical investigation of the
unsteady flow around an American 19th century vertical-axis
windmill: the Stevens & Jolly rotor, patented on April 16, 1895. The
computational approach used is based on solving the complete
transient Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (t-RANS) equations: a
full campaign of numerical simulation has been performed using the
k-ω SST turbulence model. Flow field characteristics have been
investigated for several values of tip speed ratio and for a constant
unperturbed free-stream wind velocity of 6 m/s, enabling the study of
some unsteady flow phenomena in the rotor wake. Finally, the global
power generated from the windmill has been determined for each
simulated angular velocity, allowing the calculation of the rotor
power-curve.
Abstract: This paper describes an experimental investigation of
the drying behavior and conditions of rosehip in a convective
cyclone-type dryer. Drying experiments were conducted at air inlet
temperatures of 50, 60 and 70 o C and air velocities of 0.5, 1 and 1.5
ms–1. The parametric values obtained from the experiments were
fitted to the Newton mathematical models. Consequently, the drying
model developed by Newton model showed good agreement with the
data obtained from the experiments. Concluding, it was obtained that;
(i) the temperature is the major effect on the drying process, (ii) air
velocity has low effect on the drying of rosehip, (iii) the C-vitamin is
observed to change according to the temperature, moisture, drying
time and flow types. The changing ratio is found to be in the range of
0.70-0.74.
Abstract: A 3D simulation study for an incompressible
slip flow around a spherical aerosol particle was performed.
The full Navier-Stokes equations were solved and the velocity
jump at the gas-particle interface was treated numerically by
imposition of the slip boundary condition. Analytical solution
to the Stokesian slip flow past a spherical particle was used as
a benchmark for code verification, and excellent agreement
was achieved. The Simulation results showed that in addition
to the Knudsen number, the Reynolds number affects the slip
correction factor. Thus, the Cunningham-based slip corrections
must be augmented by the inclusion of the effect of
Reynolds number for application to Lagrangian tracking of
fine particles. A new expression for the slip correction factor
as a function of both Knudsen number and Reynolds number
was developed.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the kinematics of undulatory elongated fish swimming against a velocity flow. We perform the experiments on European eel Anguilla Anguilla swimming in a hydrodynamic re-circulating tank with the velocity flow fixed at 0.2 m/s. We find that the undulating shape of overall eel body changes when it swims slantwise from the flow direction, by comparison to axial undulation shape. We examine this kinematics and we propose a general equation describing the lateral position of undulation body taking into account the direction of the eel-s swimming.
Abstract: The process for predicting the ballistic properties of a liquid rocket engine is based on the quantitative estimation of idealized performance deviations. In this aim, an equilibrium chemistry procedure is firstly developed and implemented in a Fortran routine. The thermodynamic formulation allows for the calculation of the theoretical performances of a rocket thrust chamber. In a second step, a computational fluid dynamic analysis of the turbulent reactive flow within the chamber is performed using a finite volume approach. The obtained values for the “quasi-real" performances account for both turbulent mixing and chemistryturbulence coupling. In the present work, emphasis is made on the combustion efficiency performance for which deviation is mainly due to radial gradients of static temperature and mixture ratio. Numerical values of the characteristic velocity are successfully compared with results from an industry-used code. The results are also confronted with the experimental data of a laboratory-scale rocket engine.
Abstract: We estimate snow velocity and snow drift density on hilly terrain under the assumption that the drifting snow mass can be represented using a micro-continuum approach (i.e. using a nonclassical mechanics approach assuming a class of fluids for which basic equations of mass, momentum and energy have been derived). In our model, the theory of coupled stress fluids proposed by Stokes [1] has been employed for the computation of flow parameters. Analyses of bulk drift velocity, drift density, drift transport and mass transport of snow particles have been carried out and computations made, considering various parametric effects. Results are compared with those of classical mechanics (logarithmic wind profile). The results indicate that particle size affects the flow characteristics significantly.
Abstract: This research aims at modeling and simulating the effects of nanofluids on cylindrical heat pipes thermal performance using the ANSYS-FLUENT CFD commercial software. The heat pipe outer wall temperature distribution, thermal resistance, liquid pressure and axial velocity in presence of suspended nano-scaled solid particle (i.e. Cu, Al2O3 and TiO2) within the fluid (water) were investigated. The effect of particle concentration and size were explored and it is concluded that the thermal performance of the heat pipe is improved when using nanofluid as the system working fluid. Additionally, it was observed that the thermal resistance of the heat pipe drops as the particle concentration level increases and particle radius decreases.
Abstract: In this study a two dimensional axisymmetric, steady state and incompressible laminar flow in a rotating single disk is numerically investigated. The finite volume method is used for solving the momentum equations. The numerical model and results
are validated by comparing it to previously reported experimental data for velocities, angles and moment coefficients. It is
demonstrated that increasing the axial distance increases the value of axial velocity and vice versa for tangential and total velocities. However, the maximum value of nondimensional radial velocity
occurs near the disk wall. It is also found that with increase rotational Reynolds number, moment coefficient decreases.
Abstract: The objective of this work is to investigate the
turbulent reacting flow in a three dimensional combustor with
emphasis on the effect of inlet swirl flow through a numerical
simulation. Flow field is analyzed using the SIMPLE method which is
known as stable as well as accurate in the combustion modeling, and
the finite volume method is adopted in solving the radiative transfer
equation. In this work, the thermal and flow characteristics in a three
dimensional combustor by changing parameters such as equivalence
ratio and inlet swirl angle have investigated. As the equivalence ratio
increases, which means that more fuel is supplied due to a larger inlet
fuel velocity, the flame temperature increases and the location of
maximum temperature has moved towards downstream. In the mean
while, the existence of inlet swirl velocity makes the fuel and
combustion air more completely mixed and burnt in short distance.
Therefore, the locations of the maximum reaction rate and temperature
were shifted to forward direction compared with the case of no swirl.
Abstract: In this paper stress and strain for two rotating thin
wall cylinder fitted together with initial interference and overlap are
computed. Also stress value for variation of initial interference is
calculated.
At first problem is considered without rotation and next angular
velocity increased from 0 to 50000 rev/min and stress in each stage
is calculated. The important point is that when stress become very
small in magnitude the angular velocity is critical and two cylinders
will separate. The critical speed i.e. speed of separation is calculated
in each step.
Abstract: The turbulent mixing of coolant streams of different
temperature and density can cause severe temperature fluctuations in
piping systems in nuclear reactors. In certain periodic contraction
cycles these conditions lead to thermal fatigue. The resulting aging
effect prompts investigation in how the mixing of flows over a sharp
temperature/density interface evolves. To study the fundamental
turbulent mixing phenomena in the presence of density gradients,
isokinetic (shear-free) mixing experiments are performed in a square
channel with Reynolds numbers ranging from 2-500 to 60-000.
Sucrose is used to create the density difference. A Wire Mesh Sensor
(WMS) is used to determine the concentration map of the flow in the
cross section. The mean interface width as a function of velocity,
density difference and distance from the mixing point are analyzed
based on traditional methods chosen for the purposes of
atmospheric/oceanic stratification analyses. A definition of the
mixing layer thickness more appropriate to thermal fatigue and based
on mixedness is devised. This definition shows that the thermal
fatigue risk assessed using simple mixing layer growth can be
misleading and why an approach that separates the effects of large
scale (turbulent) and small scale (molecular) mixing is necessary.
Abstract: Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to reconstruct spatio-temporal data of a fully developed turbulent channel flow with density variation at Reynolds number of 150, based on the friction velocity and the channel half-width, and Prandtl number of 0.71. To apply POD to the fully developed turbulent channel flow with density variation, the flow field (velocities, density, and temperature) is scaled by the corresponding root mean square values (rms) so that the flow field becomes dimensionless. A five-vector POD problem is solved numerically. The reconstructed second-order moments of velocity, temperature, and density from POD eigenfunctions compare favorably to the original Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data.
