Abstract: This paper describes the results of an extensive study
and comparison of popular hash functions SHA-1, SHA-256,
RIPEMD-160 and RIPEMD-320 with JERIM-320, a 320-bit hash
function. The compression functions of hash functions like SHA-1
and SHA-256 are designed using serial successive iteration whereas
those like RIPEMD-160 and RIPEMD-320 are designed using two
parallel lines of message processing. JERIM-320 uses four parallel
lines of message processing resulting in higher level of security than
other hash functions at comparable speed and memory requirement.
The performance evaluation of these methods has been done by using
practical implementation and also by using step computation
methods. JERIM-320 proves to be secure and ensures the integrity of
messages at a higher degree. The focus of this work is to establish
JERIM-320 as an alternative of the present day hash functions for the
fast growing internet applications.
Abstract: This paper discusses the cued speech recognition
methods in videoconference. Cued speech is a specific gesture
language that is used for communication between deaf people. We
define the criteria for sentence intelligibility according to answers of
testing subjects (deaf people). In our tests we use 30 sample videos
coded by H.264 codec with various bit-rates and various speed of
cued speech. Additionally, we define the criteria for consonant sign
recognizability in single-handed finger alphabet (dactyl) analogically
to acoustics. We use another 12 sample videos coded by H.264 codec
with various bit-rates in four different video formats. To interpret the
results we apply the standard scale for subjective video quality
evaluation and the percentual evaluation of intelligibility as in
acoustics. From the results we construct the minimum coded bit-rate
recommendations for every spatial resolution.
Abstract: Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) has been focused as
biological catalysis for CO2 sequestration process because it can
catalyze the conversion of CO2 to bicarbonate. Here, codon-optimized
sequence of α type-CA cloned from Duneliala species. (DsCAopt) was
constructed, expressed, and characterized. The expression level in E.
coli BL21(DE3) was better for codon-optimized DsCAopt than intact
sequence of DsCAopt. DsCAopt enzyme shows high-stability at pH
7.6/10.0. In final, we demonstrated that in the Ca2+ solution, DsCAopt
enzyme can catalyze well the conversion of CO2 to CaCO3, as the
calcite form.
Abstract: Today due to rising levels of housing- necessities,
several problems have been raised regarding to urban quality of life.
The aim of the research is to study social and spatial aspects of
housing environment and to find out their interaction with the urban
quality of life. As a case of study two pilot areas of Famagusta city in
North Cyprus, were selected: Baykal, considered as an established
urban district and Tuzla, a newly developed peri-urban district. In
order to determine urban quality of life in planning and developing of
housing areas, social and spatial aspects of selected areas have been
examined, differences between them according to the planning policy
have been pointed out, advantages and disadvantages of housing
planning have been found. As a practical implementation of the
research a number of households in each selected area have been
interviewed in order to draw a conclusion.
Abstract: In this paper, we represent protein structure by using
graph. A protein structure database will become a graph database.
Each graph is represented by a spectral vector. We use Jacobi
rotation algorithm to calculate the eigenvalues of the normalized
Laplacian representation of adjacency matrix of graph. To measure
the similarity between two graphs, we calculate the Euclidean
distance between two graph spectral vectors. To cluster the graphs,
we use M-tree with the Euclidean distance to cluster spectral vectors.
Besides, M-tree can be used for graph searching in graph database.
Our proposal method was tested with graph database of 100 graphs
representing 100 protein structures downloaded from Protein Data
Bank (PDB) and we compare the result with the SCOP hierarchical
structure.
Abstract: A simple method for the simultaneous determination
of hippuric acid and benzoic acid in urine using reversed-phase high
performance liquid chromatography was described. Chromatography
was performed on a Nova-Pak C18 (3.9 x 150 mm) column with a
mobile phase of mixed solution methanol: water: acetic acid
(20:80:0.2) and UV detection at 254 nm. The calibration curve was
linear within concentration range at 0.125 to 6.0 mg/ml of hippuric
acid and benzoic acid. The recovery, accuracy and coefficient
variance of hippuric acid were 104.54%, 0.2% and 0.2% respectively
and for benzoic acid were 98.48%, 1.25% and 0.60% respectively.
The detection limit of this method was 0.01ng/l for hippuric acid and
0.06ng/l for benzoic acid. This method has been applied to the
analysis of urine samples from the suspected of toluene abuser or
glue sniffer among secondary school students at Johor Bahru.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to remove the two principal
noises which disturb the surface electromyography signal
(Diaphragm). These signals are the electrocardiogram ECG artefact
and the power line interference artefact. The algorithm proposed
focuses on a new Lean Mean Square (LMS) Widrow adaptive
structure. These structures require a reference signal that is correlated
with the noise contaminating the signal. The noise references are
then extracted : first with a noise reference mathematically
constructed using two different cosine functions; 50Hz (the
fundamental) function and 150Hz (the first harmonic) function for
the power line interference and second with a matching pursuit
technique combined to an LMS structure for the ECG artefact
estimation. The two removal procedures are attained without the use
of supplementary electrodes. These techniques of filtering are
validated on real records of surface diaphragm electromyography
signal. The performance of the proposed methods was compared with
already conducted research results.
Abstract: This paper describes an effective solution to the task
of a remote monitoring of super-extended objects (oil and gas
pipeline, railways, national frontier). The suggested solution is based
on the principle of simultaneously monitoring of seismoacoustic and
optical/infrared physical fields. The principle of simultaneous
monitoring of those fields is not new but in contrast to the known
solutions the suggested approach allows to control super-extended
objects with very limited operational costs. So-called C-OTDR
(Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) systems are used to
monitor the seismoacoustic field. Far-CCTV systems are used to
monitor the optical/infrared field. A simultaneous data processing
provided by both systems allows effectively detecting and classifying
target activities, which appear in the monitored objects vicinity. The
results of practical usage had shown high effectiveness of the
suggested approach.
Abstract: Motor imagery classification provides an important basis for designing Brain Machine Interfaces [BMI]. A BMI captures and decodes brain EEG signals and transforms human thought into actions. The ability of an individual to control his EEG through imaginary mental tasks enables him to control devices through the BMI. This paper presents a method to design a four state BMI using EEG signals recorded from the C3 and C4 locations. Principle features extracted through principle component analysis of the segmented EEG are analyzed using two novel classification algorithms using Elman recurrent neural network and functional link neural network. Performance of both classifiers is evaluated using a particle swarm optimization training algorithm; results are also compared with the conventional back propagation training algorithm. EEG motor imagery recorded from two subjects is used in the offline analysis. From overall classification performance it is observed that the BP algorithm has higher average classification of 93.5%, while the PSO algorithm has better training time and maximum classification. The proposed methods promises to provide a useful alternative general procedure for motor imagery classification
Abstract: A parallel block method based on Backward
Differentiation Formulas (BDF) is developed for the parallel solution
of stiff Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). Most common
methods for solving stiff systems of ODEs are based on implicit
formulae and solved using Newton iteration which requires repeated
solution of systems of linear equations with coefficient matrix, I -
hβJ . Here, J is the Jacobian matrix of the problem. In this paper,
the matrix operations is paralleled in order to reduce the cost of the
iterations. Numerical results are given to compare the speedup and
efficiency of parallel algorithm and that of sequential algorithm.
Abstract: This paper deals with the development of a Jacobean model for a 4-axes indigenously developed scara robot arm in the laboratory. This model is used to study the relation between the velocities and the forces in the robot while it is doing the pick and place operation.
Abstract: This paper aims to (1) analyze the profiles of
transgressors (detected evaders); (2) examine reason(s) that triggered a
tax audit, causes of tax evasion, audit timeframe and tax penalty
charged; and (3) to assess if tax auditors followed the guidelines as
stated in the 'Tax Audit Framework' when conducting tax audits. In
2011, the Inland Revenue Board Malaysia (IRBM) had audited and
finalized 557 company cases. With official permission, data of all the
557 cases were obtained from the IRBM. Of these, a total of 421 cases
with complete information were analyzed. About 58.1% was small and
medium corporations and from the construction industry (32.8%). The
selection for tax audit was based on risk analysis (66.8%), information
from third party (11.1%), and firm with low profitability or fluctuating
profit pattern (7.8%). The three persistent causes of tax evasion by
firms were over claimed expenses (46.8%), fraudulent reporting of
income (38.5%) and overstating purchases (10.5%). These findings
are consistent with past literature. Results showed that tax auditors
took six to 18 months to close audit cases. More than half of tax
evaders were fined 45% on additional tax raised during audit for the
first offence. The study found tax auditors did follow the guidelines in
the 'Tax Audit Framework' in audit selection, settlement and penalty
imposition.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a novel statistical approach to
corpus-based speech synthesis. Classically, phonetic information is
defined and considered as acoustic reference to be respected. In this
way, many studies were elaborated for acoustical unit classification.
This type of classification allows separating units according to their
symbolic characteristics. Indeed, target cost and concatenation cost
were classically defined for unit selection.
In Corpus-Based Speech Synthesis System, when using large text
corpora, cost functions were limited to a juxtaposition of symbolic
criteria and the acoustic information of units is not exploited in the
definition of the target cost.
In this manuscript, we token in our consideration the unit phonetic
information corresponding to acoustic information. This would be realized
by defining a probabilistic linguistic Bi-grams model basically
used for unit selection. The selected units would be extracted from
the English TIMIT corpora.
Abstract: The modern telecommunication industry demands
higher capacity networks with high data rate. Orthogonal frequency
division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique for high data
rate wireless communications at reasonable complexity in wireless
channels. OFDM has been adopted for many types of wireless
systems like wireless local area networks such as IEEE 802.11a, and
digital audio/video broadcasting (DAB/DVB). The proposed research
focuses on a concatenated coding scheme that improve the
performance of OFDM based wireless communications. It uses a
Redundant Residue Number System (RRNS) code as the outer code
and a convolutional code as the inner code. Here, a direct conversion
of analog signal to residue domain is done to reduce the conversion
complexity using sigma-delta based parallel analog-to-residue
converter. The bit error rate (BER) performances of the proposed
system under different channel conditions are investigated. These
include the effect of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN),
multipath delay spread, peak power clipping and frame start
synchronization error. The simulation results show that the proposed
RRNS-Convolutional concatenated coding (RCCC) scheme provides
significant improvement in the system performance by exploiting the
inherent properties of RRNS.
Abstract: 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate using NADPH and the enzyme is involved in rate-controlling step of mevalonate. Inhibition of HMGR is considered as effective way to lower cholesterol levels so it is drug target to treat hypercholesterolemia, major risk factor of cardiovascular disease. To discover novel HMGR inhibitor, we performed structure-based pharmacophore modeling combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Four HMGR inhibitors were used for MD simulation and representative structure of each simulation were selected by clustering analysis. Four structure-based pharmacophore models were generated using the representative structure. The generated models were validated used in virtual screening to find novel scaffolds for inhibiting HMGR. The screened compounds were filtered by applying drug-like properties and used in molecular docking. Finally, four hit compounds were obtained and these complexes were refined using energy minimization. These compounds might be potential leads to design novel HMGR inhibitor.
Abstract: The effect of extraction solvent upon properties
of carrageenan from Eucheuma cottonii was studied. The
distilled water and KOH solution (concentration 0.1- 0.5N) were
used as the solvent. Extraction process was carried out in water
bath equipped by stirrer with constant speed of 275 rpm with a
constant ratio of seaweed weight to solvent volume ( 1:50 g/mL)
at 86oC for 45 minutes. The extract was then precipitated in 3
volume of 90% ethanol, oven dried at 60oC. Based on
experimental data, alkali significantly influenced yield and
properties of extracted carrageenan. The extracted carrageenan
was found to have essentially identical FTIR spectra to the
reference samples of kappa-carrageenan. Increasing the KOH
concentration led to carrageenan containing less sulfate content
and intrinsic viscosity. The gel strength increased along with the
increasing of KOH concentration. The decreasing of intrinsic
viscosity value indicates that a polymer degradation occurs
during alkali extraction.
Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the paradigm shift in bank
capital from the “gone concern" to the “going concern" mindset. We
then propose a methodology for pricing a product of this shift called
Contingent Capital Notes (“CoCos"). The Merton Model can
determine a price for credit risk by using the firm-s equity value as a
call option on those assets. Our pricing methodology for CoCos also
uses the credit spread implied by the Merton Model in a subsequent
derivative form created by John Hull et al . Here, a market implied
asset volatility is calculated by using observed market CDS spreads.
This implied asset volatility is then used to estimate the probability of
triggering a predetermined “contingency event" given the distanceto-
trigger (DTT). The paper then investigates the effect of varying
DTTs and recovery assumptions on the CoCo yield. We conclude
with an investment rationale.
Abstract: Small cracks or chips of a product appear very
frequently in the course of continuous production of an automatic
press process system. These phenomena become the cause of not only
defective product but also damage of a press mold. In order to solve
this problem AE system was introduced. AE system was expected to
be very effective to real time detection of the defective product and to
prevention of the damage of the press molds.
In this study, for pick and analysis of AE signals generated from the
press process, AE sensors/pre-amplifier/analysis and processing board
were used as frequently found in the other similar cases. For analysis
and processing the AE signals picked in real time from the good or bad
products, specialized software called cdm8 was used. As a result of
this work it was conformed that intensity and shape of the various AE
signals differ depending on the weight and thickness of metal sheet
and process type.
Abstract: Inorganic nanoparticles filled polymer composites
have extended their multiple functionalities to various applications,
including mechanical reinforcement, gas barrier, dimensional
stability, heat distortion temperature, flame-retardant, and thermal
conductivity. Sodium stearate-modified calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
nanoparticles were prepared using surface modification method. The
results showed that sodium stearate attached to the surface of CaCO3
nanoparticles with the chemical bond. The effect of modified CaCO3
nanoparticles on thermal properties of polypropylene (PP) was
studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and
Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that CaCO3
significantly affected the crystallization temperature and
crystallization degree of PP. Effect of the modified CaCO3 content on
mechanical properties of PP/CaCO3 nanocomposites was also
studied. The results showed that the modified CaCO3 can effectively
improve the mechanical properties of PP. In comparison with PP, the
impact strength of PP/CaCO3 nanocomposites increased by about
65% and the hardness increased by about 5%.
Abstract: Wood pyrolysis for Casuarina glauca, Casuarina cunninghamiana, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus microtheca was made at 450°C with 2.5°C/min. in a flowing N2-atmosphere. The Eucalyptus genus wood gave higher values of specific gravity, ash , total extractives, lignin, N2-liquid trap distillate (NLTD) and water trap distillate (WSP) than those for Casuarina genus. The GHC of NLTD was higher for Casuarina genus than that for Eucalyptus genus with the highest value for Casuarina cunninghamiana. Guiacol, 4-ethyl-2-methoxyphenol and syringol were observed in the NLTD of all the four wood species reflecting their parent hardwood lignin origin. Eucalyptus camaldulensis wood had the highest lignin content (28.89%) and was pyrolyzed to the highest values of phenolics (73.01%), guaiacol (11.2%) and syringol (32.28%) contents in methylene chloride fraction (MCF) of NLTD. Accordingly, recoveries of syringol and guaiacol may become economically attractive from Eucalyptus camaldulensis.
