Abstract: This paper presents effects of the mean operating
pressure on the optimal operating frequency based on temperature
differences across stack ends in a thermoacoustic refrigerator. In
addition to the length of the resonance tube, components of the
thermoacoustic refrigerator have an influence on the operating
frequency due to their acoustic properties, i.e., absorptivity,
reflectivity and transmissivity. The interference of waves incurs and
distorts the original frequency generated by the driver so that the
optimal operating frequency differs from the designs. These acoustic
properties are not parameters in the designs and be very complicated
to infer their responses. A prototype thermoacoustic refrigerator is
constructed and used to investigate its optimal operating frequency
compared to the design at various operating pressures. Helium and air
are used as working fluids during the experiments. The results
indicate that the optimal operating frequency of the prototype
thermoacoustic refrigerator using helium is at 6 bar and 490Hz or
approximately 20% away from the design frequency. The optimal
operating frequency at other mean pressures differs from the design
in an unpredictable manner, however, the optimal operating
frequency and pressure can be identified by testing.

Abstract: This paper deals with the theoretical and numerical
investigation of magneto hydrodynamic boundary layer flow of a
nanofluid past a wedge shaped wick in heat pipe used for the cooling
of electronic components and different type of machines. To
incorporate the effect of nanoparticle diameter, concentration of
nanoparticles in the pure fluid, nanothermal layer formed around the
nanoparticle and Brownian motion of nanoparticles etc., appropriate
models are used for the effective thermal and physical properties of
nanofluids. To model the rotation of nanoparticles inside the base
fluid, microfluidics theory is used. In this investigation ethylene
glycol (EG) based nanofluids, are taken into account. The non-linear
equations governing the flow and heat transfer are solved by using a
very effective particle swarm optimization technique along with
Runge-Kutta method. The values of heat transfer coefficient are
found for different parameters involved in the formulation viz.
nanoparticle concentration, nanoparticle size, magnetic field and
wedge angle etc. It is found that, the wedge angle, presence of
magnetic field, nanoparticle size and nanoparticle concentration etc.
have prominent effects on fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics
for the considered configuration.
Abstract: This paper presents a model for a modified T-junction
device for microspheres generation. The numerical model is
developed using a commercial software package: COMSOL
Multiphysics. In order to test the accuracy of the numerical model,
multiple variables, such as the flow rate of cross-flow, fluid properties,
structure, and geometry of the microdevice are applied. The results
from the model are compared with the experimental results in the
diameter of the microsphere generated. The comparison shows a good
agreement. Therefore the model is useful in further optimization of the
device and feedback control of microsphere generation if any.
Abstract: Exact solution of an unsteady MHD flow of elasticoviscous
fluid through a porous media in a tube of spherical cross
section under the influence of magnetic field and constant pressure
gradient has been obtained in this paper. Initially, the flow is
generated by a constant pressure gradient. After attaining the steady
state, the pressure gradient is suddenly withdrawn and the resulting
fluid motion in a tube of spherical cross section by taking into
account of the porosity factor and magnetic parameter of the
bounding surface is investigated. The problem is solved in two-stages
the first stage is a steady motion in tube under the influence of a
constant pressure gradient, the second stage concern with an unsteady
motion. The problem is solved employing separation of variables
technique. The results are expressed in terms of a non-dimensional
porosity parameter (K), magnetic parameter (m) and elasticoviscosity
parameter (β), which depends on the Non-Newtonian
coefficient. The flow parameters are found to be identical with that of
Newtonian case as elastic-viscosity parameter and magnetic
parameter tends to zero and porosity tends to infinity. It is seen that
the effect of elastico-viscosity parameter, porosity parameter and
magnetic parameter of the bounding surface has significant effect on
the velocity parameter.
Abstract: In the current work, a three-dimensional geometry of a
75% stenosed blood vessel is analyzed. Large eddy simulation (LES)
with the help of a dynamic subgrid scale Smagorinsky model is
applied to model the turbulent pulsatile flow. The geometry, the
transmural pressure and the properties of the blood and the elastic
boundary were based on clinical measurement data. For the flexible
wall model, a thin solid region is constructed around the 75%
stenosed blood vessel. The deformation of this solid region was
modelled as a deforming boundary to reduce the computational cost
of the solid model. Fluid-structure interaction is realized via a twoway
coupling between the blood flow modelled via LES and the
deforming vessel. The information of the flow pressure and the wall
motion was exchanged continually during the cycle by an arbitrary
Lagrangian-Eulerian method. The boundary condition of current time
step depended on previous solutions. The fluctuation of the velocity
in the post-stenotic region was analyzed in the study. The axial
velocity at normalized position Z=0.5 shows a negative value near
the vessel wall. The displacement of the elastic boundary was
concerned in this study. In particular, the wall displacement at the
systole and the diastole were compared. The negative displacement at
the stenosis indicates a collapse at the maximum velocity and the
deceleration phase.
Abstract: The convective heat and mass transfer in nanofluid
flow through a porous media due to a permeable stretching sheet with
magnetic field, viscous dissipation, chemical reaction and Soret
effects are numerically investigated. Two types of nanofluids, namely
Cu-water and Ag-water were studied. The governing boundary layer
equations are formulated and reduced to a set of ordinary differential
equations using similarity transformations and then solved
numerically using the Keller box method. Numerical results are
obtained for the skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and
Sherwood number as well as for the velocity, temperature and
concentration profiles for selected values of the governing
parameters. Excellent validation of the present numerical results has
been achieved with the earlier linearly stretching sheet problems in
the literature.
Abstract: Gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) is a mineral that is found in
large quantities in the Turkey and in the World. In this study, the
dissolution of this mineral in the diammonium hydrogen phosphate
solutions has been studied. The dissolution and dissolution kinetics of
gypsum in diammonium hydrogen phosphate solutions will be useful
for evaluating of solid wastes containing gypsum. Parameters such as
diammonium hydrogen phosphate concentration, temperature and
stirring speed affecting on the dissolution rate of the gypsum in
diammonium hydrogen phosphate solutions were investigated. In
experimental studies have researched effectiveness of the selected
parameters. The dissolution of gypsum were examined in two parts at
low and high temperatures. The experimental results were
successfully correlated by linear regression using Statistica program.
Dissolution curves were evaluated shrinking core models for solidfluid
systems. The activation energy was found to be 34.58 kJ/mol
and 44.45 kJ/mol for the low and the high temperatures. The
dissolution of gypsum was controlled by chemical reaction both low
temperatures and high temperatures.
Abstract: Incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of
the key scopes in the global clean energy strategy. A computational
fluid dynamics (CFD) model was established in order to reveal these
features of the combustion process in a fixed porous bed of MSW.
Transporting equations and process rate equations of the waste bed
were modeled and set up to describe the incineration process,
according to the local thermal conditions and waste property
characters. Gas phase turbulence was modeled using k-ε turbulent
model and the particle phase was modeled using the kinetic theory of
granular flow. The heterogeneous reaction rates were determined
using Arrhenius eddy dissipation and the Arrhenius-diffusion
reaction rates. The effects of primary air flow rate and temperature in
the burning process of simulated MSW are investigated
experimentally and numerically. The simulation results in bed are
accordant with experimental data well. The model provides detailed
information on burning processes in the fixed bed, which is otherwise
very difficult to obtain by conventional experimental techniques.
Abstract: In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
model has been developed for studying the effect of surface
roughness profile on the EHL problem. The cylinders contact
geometry, meshing and calculation of the conservation of mass and
momentum equations are carried out using the commercial software
packages ICEMCFD and ANSYS Fluent. The user defined functions
(UDFs) for density, viscosity and elastic deformation of the cylinders
as the functions of pressure and temperature are defined for the CFD
model. Three different surface roughness profiles are created and
incorporated into the CFD model. It is found that the developed CFD
model can predict the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer in
the EHL problem, including the main parameters such as pressure
distribution, minimal film thickness, viscosity, and density changes.
The results obtained show that the pressure profile at the center of the
contact area directly relates to the roughness amplitude. A rough
surface with kurtosis value of more than 3 has greater influence over
the fluctuated shape of pressure distribution than in other cases.
Abstract: Parabolic solar trough systems have seen limited
deployments in cold northern climates as they are more suitable for
electricity production in southern latitudes. A numerical dynamic
model is developed to simulate troughs installed in cold climates and
validated using a parabolic solar trough facility in Winnipeg. The
model is developed in Simulink and will be utilized to simulate a trigeneration
system for heating, cooling and electricity generation in
remote northern communities. The main objective of this simulation
is to obtain operational data of solar troughs in cold climates and use
the model to determine ways to improve the economics and address
cold weather issues.
In this paper the validated Simulink model is applied to simulate a
solar assisted absorption cooling system along with electricity
generation using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and thermal storage.
A control strategy is employed to distribute the heated oil from solar
collectors among the above three systems considering the
temperature requirements. This modelling provides dynamic
performance results using measured meteorological data recorded
every minute at the solar facility location. The purpose of this
modeling approach is to accurately predict system performance at
each time step considering the solar radiation fluctuations due to
passing clouds. Optimization of the controller in cold temperatures is
another goal of the simulation to for example minimize heat losses in
winter when energy demand is high and solar resources are low.
The solar absorption cooling is modeled to use the generated heat
from the solar trough system and provide cooling in summer for a
greenhouse which is located next to the solar field.
The results of the simulation are presented for a summer day in
Winnipeg which includes comparison of performance parameters of
the absorption cooling and ORC systems at different heat transfer
fluid (HTF) temperatures.
Abstract: In this paper, the exergy analysis of vapor absorption
refrigeration system using LiBr-H2O as working fluid is carried out
with the modified Gouy-Stodola approach rather than the classical
Gouy-Stodola equation and effect of varying input parameters is also
studied on the performance of the system. As the modified approach
uses the concept of effective temperature, the mathematical
expressions for effective temperature have been formulated and
calculated for each component of the system. Various constraints and
equations are used to develop program in EES to solve these
equations. The main aim of this analysis is to determine the
performance of the system and the components having major
irreversible loss. Results show that exergy destruction rate is
considerable in absorber and generator followed by evaporator and
condenser. There is an increase in exergy destruction in generator,
absorber and condenser and decrease in the evaporator by the
modified approach as compared to the conventional approach. The
value of exergy determined by the modified Gouy-Stodola equation
deviates maximum i.e. 26% in the generator as compared to the
exergy calculated by the classical Gouy-Stodola method.
Abstract: This paper shortly describes various types of biomass
and a growing number of facilities utilizing the biomass in the Czech
Republic. The considerable part of this paper deals with energy
parameters of the most frequently used types of biomass and results
of their gasification testing. Sixteen most used "Czech" woody plants
and grasses were selected; raw, element and biochemical analyses
were performed and basic calorimetric values, ash composition, and
ash characteristic temperatures were identified. Later, each biofuel
was tested in a fluidized bed gasifier. The essential part of this paper
provides results of the gasification of selected biomass types.
Operating conditions are described in detail with a focus on
individual fuels properties. Gas composition and impurities content
are also identified. In terms of operating conditions and gas quality,
the essential difference occurred mainly between woody plants and
grasses. The woody plants were evaluated as more suitable fuels for
fluidized bed gasifiers. Testing results significantly help with a
decision-making process regarding suitability of energy plants for
growing and with a selection of optimal biomass-treatment
technology.
Abstract: The thermal control in many systems is widely
accomplished applying mixed convection process due to its low cost,
reliability and easy maintenance. Typical applications include the
aircraft electronic equipment, rotating-disc heat exchangers, turbo
machinery, and nuclear reactors, etc. Natural convection in an inclined
square enclosure heated via wall heater has been studied numerically.
Finite volume method is used for solving momentum and energy
equations in the form of stream function–vorticity. The right and left
walls are kept at a constant temperature, while the other parts are
adiabatic. The range of the inclination angle covers a whole revolution.
The method is validated for a vertical cavity. A general power law
dependence of the Nusselt number with respect to the Rayleigh
number with the coefficient and exponent as functions of the
inclination angle is presented. For a fixed Rayleigh number, the
inclination angle increases or decreases is found.
Abstract: Power Regeneration in Refrigeration Plant concept
has been analyzed and has been shown to be capable of saving about
25% power in Cryogenic Plants with the Power Regeneration System
(PRS) running under nominal conditions. The innovative component
Compressor Expander Group (CEG) based on turbomachinery has
been designed and built modifying CETT compressor and expander,
both selected for optimum plant performance. Experiments have
shown the good response of the turbomachines to run with R404a as
working fluid. Power saving up to 12% under PRS derated conditions
(50% loading) has been demonstrated. Such experiments allowed
predicting a power saving up to 25% under CEG full load.

Abstract: New physical insights into the nonlinear Lorenz
equations related to flow resistance is discussed in this work. The
chaotic dynamics related to Lorenz equations has been studied in
many papers, which is due to the sensitivity of Lorenz equations to
initial conditions and parameter uncertainties. However, the physical
implication arising from Lorenz equations about convectional motion
attracts little attention in the relevant literature. Therefore, as a first
step to understand the related fluid mechanics of convectional motion,
this paper derives the Lorenz equations again with different forced
conditions in the model. Simulation work of the modified Lorenz
equations without the viscosity or buoyancy force is discussed. The
time-domain simulation results may imply that the states of the
Lorenz equations are related to certain flow speed and flow resistance.
The flow speed of the underlying fluid system increases as the flow
resistance reduces. This observation would be helpful to analyze the
coupling effects of different fluid parameters in a convectional model
in future work.
Abstract: In this paper, effects of using Alumina-water
nanofluid on the rate of heat transfer have been investigated
numerically. Physical model is a square enclosure with insulated top
and bottom horizontal walls, while the vertical walls are kept at
different constant temperatures. Two appropriate models are used to
evaluate the viscosity and thermal conductivity of nanofluid. The
governing stream-vorticity equations are solved using a second order
central finite difference scheme, coupled to the conservation of mass
and energy. The study has been carried out for the Richardson
number 0.1 to 10 and the solid volume fraction 0 to 0.04. Results are
presented by isotherms lines, average Nusselt number and normalized
Nusselt number in different range of φ and Ri for forced, combined
and natural convection dominated regime. It is found that higher heat
transfer rate is predicted when the effects of nanoparticle is taken into
account.
Abstract: Numerical studies were conducted using Lattice
Boltzmann Method (LBM) to study the natural convection in a square
cavity in the presence of roughness. An algorithm based on a single
relaxation time Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model of Lattice
Boltzmann Method (LBM) was developed. Roughness was
introduced on both the hot and cold walls in the form of sinusoidal
roughness elements. The study was conducted for a Newtonian fluid
of Prandtl number (Pr) 1.0. The range of Ra number was explored
from 10^3 to 10^6 in a laminar region. Thermal and hydrodynamic
behavior of fluid was analyzed using a differentially heated square
cavity with roughness elements present on both the hot and cold wall.
Neumann boundary conditions were introduced on horizontal walls
with vertical walls as isothermal. The roughness elements were at the
same boundary condition as corresponding walls. Computational
algorithm was validated against previous benchmark studies
performed with different numerical methods, and a good agreement
was found to exist. Results indicate that the maximum reduction in
the average heat transfer was 16.66 percent at Ra number 10^5.
Abstract: Carbon Deposits are often occurred inside the
industrial coke oven during coking process. Accumulation of carbon
deposits may cause a big issue, which seriously influences the coking
operation. The carbon is burning off by injecting fresh air through
pipes into coke oven which is an efficient way practically operated in
industries. The burning off carbon deposition in coke oven performed
by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method has provided an
evaluation of the feasibility study. A three dimensional, transient,
turbulent reacting flow simulation has performed with three different
injecting air flow rate and another kind of injecting configuration. The
result shows that injection higher air flow rate would effectively
reduce the carbon deposits. In the meantime, the opened charging
holes would suck extra oxygen from atmosphere to participate in
reactions. In term of coke oven operating limits, the wall temperatures
are monitored to prevent over-heating of the adiabatic walls during
burn-off process.
