Abstract: Modeling and forecasting dynamics of rainfall
occurrences constitute one of the major topics, which have been
largely treated by statisticians, hydrologists, climatologists and many
other groups of scientists. In the same issue, we propose, in the
present paper, a new hybrid method, which combines Extreme
Values and fractal theories. We illustrate the use of our methodology
for transformed Emberger Index series, constructed basing on data
recorded in Oujda (Morocco).
The index is treated at first by Peaks Over Threshold (POT)
approach, to identify excess observations over an optimal threshold u.
In the second step, we consider the resulting excess as a fractal object
included in one dimensional space of time. We identify fractal
dimension by the box counting. We discuss the prospect descriptions
of rainfall data sets under Generalized Pareto Distribution, assured by
Extreme Values Theory (EVT). We show that, despite of the
appropriateness of return periods given by POT approach, the
introduction of fractal dimension provides accurate interpretation
results, which can ameliorate apprehension of rainfall occurrences.
Abstract: In a multi-cultural learning context, where ties are
weak and dynamic, combining qualitative with quantitative research
methods may be more effective. Such a combination may also allow
us to answer different types of question, such as about people’s
perception of the network. In this study the use of observation,
interviews and photos were explored as ways of enhancing data from
social network questionnaires. Integrating all of these methods was
found to enhance the quality of data collected and its accuracy, also
providing a richer story of the network dynamics and the factors that
shaped these changes over time.
Abstract: In this paper, a new design of spherical robotic system
based on the concepts of gimbal structure and gyro dynamics is
presented. Robots equipped with multiple wheels and complex
steering mechanics may increase the weight and degrade the energy
transmission efficiency. In addition, the wheeled and legged robots are
relatively vulnerable to lateral impact and lack of lateral mobility.
Therefore, the proposed robotic design uses a spherical shell as the
main body for ground locomotion, instead of using wheel devices.
Three spherical shells are structured in a similar way to a gimbal
device and rotate like a gyro system. The design and mechanism of the
proposed robotic system is introduced. In addition, preliminary results
of the dynamic model based on the principles of planar rigid body
kinematics and Lagrangian equation are included. Simulation results
and rig construction are presented to verify the concepts.
Abstract: Now in some countries of the world the cellular
market is on the point of saturation, in others - positive dynamics of
development kept on. The reasons for it are also different, but there
are united by their general susceptibility to innovation changes, if
they are really innovative. If to take as an example the cellular market
of Kazakhstan it is defined by the low percent of smart phones at
consumers, the low population density, undercapacity of the 3G
channel, and absence of universal access to the LTE technology that
limits dynamical growth of this branch. These moments are
aggravated by failures of starting commercial projects by private
companies which prevent to be implemented and widely adopted to a
new product among consumers. The object of the research is possible
integration of wireless and program technologies at which
introduction the idea can regenerate in an innovation. The analysis of
existing projects in the market and the possible union of the
technologies through a prism of theoretical bases of innovative
activity shows that efficiency of the company by development and
introduction of innovations is possible only thanks to strict
observance of all terms and conditions of the innovative process
which main term is profit. Despite that fact that on a global scale the
innovativeness issue of companies is very popular, there are no
researches about possibility of innovative breaks in the field of
wireless access to the Internet in the cellular market of Kazakhstan.
Abstract: The present work describes the implementation of the
Enhanced Collaborative Optimization (ECO) multilevel architecture
with a gradient-based optimization algorithm with the aim of
performing a multidisciplinary design optimization of a generic
unmanned aerial vehicle with morphing technologies. The concepts
of weighting coefficient and dynamic compatibility parameter are
presented for the ECO architecture. A routine that calculates the
aircraft performance for the user defined mission profile and vehicle’s
performance requirements has been implemented using low fidelity
models for the aerodynamics, stability, propulsion, weight, balance
and flight performance. A benchmarking case study for evaluating
the advantage of using a variable span wing within the optimization
methodology developed is presented.
Abstract: New physical insights into the nonlinear Lorenz
equations related to flow resistance is discussed in this work. The
chaotic dynamics related to Lorenz equations has been studied in
many papers, which is due to the sensitivity of Lorenz equations to
initial conditions and parameter uncertainties. However, the physical
implication arising from Lorenz equations about convectional motion
attracts little attention in the relevant literature. Therefore, as a first
step to understand the related fluid mechanics of convectional motion,
this paper derives the Lorenz equations again with different forced
conditions in the model. Simulation work of the modified Lorenz
equations without the viscosity or buoyancy force is discussed. The
time-domain simulation results may imply that the states of the
Lorenz equations are related to certain flow speed and flow resistance.
The flow speed of the underlying fluid system increases as the flow
resistance reduces. This observation would be helpful to analyze the
coupling effects of different fluid parameters in a convectional model
in future work.
Abstract: Bir El Djir is an important coastal township in Oran
department, located at 450 Km far away from Algiers on northwest of
Algeria. In this coastal area, the urban sprawl is one of the main
problems that reduce the limited highly fertile land. So, using the
remote sensing and GIS technologies have shown their great
capabilities to solve many earth resources issues.
The aim of this study is to produce land use and cover map for the
studied area at varied periods to monitor possible changes that may
occurred, particularly in the urban areas and subsequently predict
likely changes. For this, two spatial images SPOT and Landsat
satellites from 1987 and 2014 respectively were used to assess the
changes of urban expansion and encroachment during this period
with photo-interpretation and GIS approach.
The results revealed that the town of Bir El Djir has shown a
highest growth rate in the period 1987-2014 which is 1201.5 hectares
in terms of area. These expansions largely concern the new real estate
constructions falling within the social and promotional housing
programs launched by the government.
The most urban expansion is characterized by the new
construction in the form of spontaneous or peripheral precarious
habitat, but also unstructured slums settled especially in the
southeastern part of town.
Abstract: Carbon Deposits are often occurred inside the
industrial coke oven during coking process. Accumulation of carbon
deposits may cause a big issue, which seriously influences the coking
operation. The carbon is burning off by injecting fresh air through
pipes into coke oven which is an efficient way practically operated in
industries. The burning off carbon deposition in coke oven performed
by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method has provided an
evaluation of the feasibility study. A three dimensional, transient,
turbulent reacting flow simulation has performed with three different
injecting air flow rate and another kind of injecting configuration. The
result shows that injection higher air flow rate would effectively
reduce the carbon deposits. In the meantime, the opened charging
holes would suck extra oxygen from atmosphere to participate in
reactions. In term of coke oven operating limits, the wall temperatures
are monitored to prevent over-heating of the adiabatic walls during
burn-off process.
Abstract: Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are playing
increasingly prominent roles in defense programs and defense
strategies around the world. Technology advancements have
enabled the development of it to do many excellent jobs as
reconnaissance, surveillance, battle fighters, and communications
relays. Simulating a small unmanned aerial vehicle (SUAV)
dynamics and analyzing its behavior at the preflight stage is too
important and more efficient. The first step in the UAV design is
the mathematical modeling of the nonlinear equations of motion. .
In this paper, a survey with a standard method to obtain the full
non-linear equations of motion is utilized, and then the
linearization of the equations according to a steady state flight
condition (trimming) is derived. This modeling technique is
applied to an Ultrastick-25e fixed wing UAV to obtain the valued
linear longitudinal and lateral models. At the end the model is
checked by matching between the behavior of the states of the nonlinear
UAV and the resulted linear model with doublet at the
control surfaces.
Abstract: The main objective of aircraft aerodynamics is to
enhance the aerodynamic characteristics and maneuverability of the
aircraft. This enhancement includes the reduction in drag and stall
phenomenon. The airfoil which contains dimples will have
comparatively less drag than the plain airfoil. Introducing dimples on
the aircraft wing will create turbulence by creating vortices which
delays the boundary layer separation resulting in decrease of pressure
drag and also increase in the angle of stall. In addition, wake
reduction leads to reduction in acoustic emission. The overall
objective of this paper is to improve the aircraft maneuverability by
delaying the flow separation point at stall and thereby reducing the
drag by applying the dimple effect over the aircraft wing. This project
includes both computational and experimental analysis of dimple
effect on aircraft wing, using NACA 0018 airfoil. Dimple shapes of
Semi-sphere, hexagon, cylinder, square are selected for the analysis;
airfoil is tested under the inlet velocity of 30m/s and 60m/s at
different angle of attack (5˚, 10˚, 15˚, 20˚, and 25˚). This analysis
favors the dimple effect by increasing L/D ratio and thereby
providing the maximum aerodynamic efficiency, which provides the
enhanced performance for the aircraft.
Abstract: For a bluff body, dimples behave like roughness
elements in stimulating a turbulent boundary layer, leading to delayed
flow separation, a smaller wake and lower form drag. This is very
different in principle from the application of dimples to streamlined
body, where any reduction in drag would be predominantly due to a
reduction in skin friction. In the present work, a car model with
different dimple geometry is simulated using k-ε turbulence modeling
to determine its effect to the aerodynamics performance. Overall, the
results show that the application of dimples manages to reduce the
drag coefficient of the car model.
Abstract: A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is
developed for rechargeable non-aqueous electrolyte lithium-air
batteries with a partial opening for oxygen supply to the cathode.
Multi-phase transport phenomena occurred in the battery are
considered, including dissolved lithium ions and oxygen gas in the
liquid electrolyte, solid-phase electron transfer in the porous
functional materials and liquid-phase charge transport in the
electrolyte. These transport processes are coupled with the
electrochemical reactions at the active surfaces, and effects of
discharge reaction-generated solid Li2O2 on the transport properties
and the electrochemical reaction rate are evaluated and implemented
in the model. The predicted results are discussed and analyzed in terms
of the spatial and transient distribution of various parameters, such as
local oxygen concentration, reaction rate, variable solid Li2O2 volume
fraction and porosity, as well as the effective diffusion coefficients. It
is found that the effect of the solid Li2O2 product deposited at the solid
active surfaces is significant on the transport phenomena and the
overall battery performance.
Abstract: For the treatment of acute and chronic lung diseases it is preferred to deliver medicaments by inhalation. The drug is delivered directly to tracheobronchial tree. This way allows the given medicament to get directly into the place of action and it makes rapid onset of action and maximum efficiency. The transport of aerosol particles in the particular part of the lung is influenced by their size, anatomy of the lungs, breathing pattern and airway resistance. This article deals with calculation of airway resistance in the lung model of Horsfield. It solves the problem of determination of the pressure losses in bifurcation and thus defines the pressure drop at a given location in the bronchial tree. The obtained data will be used as boundary conditions for transport of aerosol particles in a central part of bronchial tree realized by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. The results obtained from CFD simulation will allow us to provide information on the required particle size and optimal inhalation technique for particle transport into particular part of the lung.
Abstract: Elastomeric dielectric material has recently become a
new alternative for actuator technology. The characteristics of
dielectric elastomers placed between two electrodes to withstand
large strain when electrodes are charged has attracted the attention of
many researcher to study this material for actuator technology. Thus,
in the past few years Danfoss Ventures A/S has established their own
dielectric electro-active polymer (DEAP), which was called
PolyPower.
The main objective of this work was to investigate the dynamic
characteristics for vibration control of a PolyPower actuator folded in
‘pull’ configuration. A range of experiments was carried out on the
folded actuator including passive (without electrical load) and active
(with electrical load) testing. For both categories static and dynamic
testing have been done to determine the behavior of folded DEAP
actuator.
Voltage-Strain experiments show that the DEAP folded actuator is
a non-linear system. It is also shown that the voltage supplied has no
effect on the natural frequency. Finally, varying AC voltage with
different amplitude and frequency shows the parameters that
influence the performance of DEAP folded actuator. As a result, the
actuator performance dominated by the frequency dependence of the
elastic response and was less influenced by dielectric properties.
Abstract: Urban areas have been expanded throughout the
globe. Monitoring and modelling urban growth have become a
necessity for a sustainable urban planning and decision making.
Urban prediction models are important tools for analyzing the causes
and consequences of urban land use dynamics. The objective of this
research paper is to analyze and model the urban change, which has
been occurred from 1990 to 2000 using CORINE land cover maps.
The model was developed using drivers of urban changes (such as
road distance, slope, etc.) under an Artificial Neural Network
modelling approach. Validation was achieved using a prediction map
for 2006 which was compared with a real map of Urban Atlas of
2006. The accuracy produced a Kappa index of agreement of 0,639
and a value of Cramer's V of 0,648. These encouraging results
indicate the importance of the developed urban growth prediction
model which using a set of available common biophysical drivers
could serve as a management tool for the assessment of urban
change.
Abstract: These days, the field of tissue engineering is getting
serious attention due to its usefulness. Bone tissue engineering helps
to address and sort-out the critical sized and non-healing orthopedic
problems by the creation of manmade bone tissue. We will design
and validate an efficient numerical model, which will simulate the
effective diffusivity in bone tissue engineering. Our numerical model
will be based on the finite element analysis of the diffusion-reaction
equations. It will have the ability to optimize the diffusivity, even
at multi-scale, with the variation of time. It will also have a special
feature “parametric sweep”, with which we will be able to predict
the oxygen, glucose and cell density dynamics, more accurately. We
will fix these problems by modifying the governing equations, by
selecting appropriate spatio-temporal finite element schemes and by
transient analysis.
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to forecast the influences
of information and communication technology (ICT) on the structural
changes of Japanese economies. In this study, input-output (IO) and
statistical approaches are used as analysis instruments. More
specifically, this study employs Leontief IO coefficients and
constrained multivariate regression (CMR) model in order to achieve
the purpose. The periods of initial and forecast in this study are 2005
and 2015, respectively. In this study, ICT is represented by ICT capital
stocks. This study conducts two levels of analysis, namely macro and
micro. The results of macro level analysis show that the dynamics of
Japanese economies on the forecast period, relative to the initial period,
are not so high. We focus on (1) commerce, (2) business services and
office supplies, and (3) personal services sectors when conducting the
analysis of the micro level. Further, we analyze its specific IO
coefficients when doing this analysis. The results of the analysis
explain that ICT gives a strong influence on the changes of these
coefficients from initial to forecast periods.
Abstract: The design and plantwide control of an integrated
plant where the endothermic 1,4-butanediol dehydrogenation and the
exothermic furfural hydrogenation is simultaneously performed in a
single reactor is studied. The reactions can be carried out in an
adiabatic reactor using small hydrogen excess and with reduced
parameter sensitivity. The plant is robust and flexible enough to
allow different production rates of γ-butyrolactone and 2-methyl
furan, keeping high product purities. Rigorous steady state and
dynamic simulations performed in AspenPlus and AspenDynamics to
support the conclusions.
Abstract: The emerging Cognitive Radio is combo of both the
technologies i.e. Radio dynamics and software technology. It involve
wireless system with efficient coding, designing, and making them
artificial intelligent to take the decision according to the surrounding
environment and adopt themselves accordingly, so as to deliver the
best QoS. This is the breakthrough from fixed hardware and fixed
utilization of the spectrum. This software-defined approach of
research is centralized at user-definition and application driven
model, various software method are used for the optimization of the
wireless communication. This paper focused on the Spectrum
allocation technique using genetic algorithm GA to evolve radio,
represented by chromosomes. The chromosomes gene represents the
adjustable parameters in given radio and by using GA, evolving over
the generations, the optimized set of parameters are evolved, as per
the requirement of user and availability of the spectrum, in our
prototype the gene consist of 6 different parameters, and the best set
of parameters are evolved according to the application need and
availability of the spectrum holes and thus maintaining best QoS for
user, simultaneously maintaining licensed user rights. The analyzing
tool Matlab is used for the performance of the prototype.
Abstract: A Motzkin shift is a mathematical model for constraints
on genetic sequences. In terms of the theory of symbolic dynamics,
the Motzkin shift is nonsofic, and therefore, we cannot use the Perron-
Frobenius theory to calculate its topological entropy. The Motzkin
shift M(M,N) which comes from language theory, is defined to be the
shift system over an alphabet A that consists of N negative symbols,
N positive symbols and M neutral symbols. For an x in the full shift,
x will be in the Motzkin subshift M(M,N) if and only if every finite
block appearing in x has a non-zero reduced form. Therefore, the
constraint for x cannot be bounded in length. K. Inoue has shown that
the entropy of the Motzkin shift M(M,N) is log(M + N + 1). In this
paper, a new direct method of calculating the topological entropy of
the Motzkin shift is given without any measure theoretical discussion.
