Abstract: Measurement of the COD of a spent caustic solution involves firstly digestion of a test sample with dichromate solution and secondly measurement of dichromate remained by titration by ferrous ammonium sulfate [FAS] to an end point. In this paper we study by a potentiometric end point with Ag/AgCl reference electrode and gold rode electrode. The potentiometric end point is sharp and easily identified especially for the samples with high turbidity and color that other methods such as colorimetric in this type of sample do not result in high precision. Because interim of titration responds quickly to potential changes within the [Cr+6/Cr+3& Fe+2/Fe+3] solution producing stable readings that is lead to accurate COD measurement. Finally results are compared with data determined using colorimetric method for standard samples. It is shown that the potentiometric end point titration with gold rode electrode can be used with equal or better facility
Abstract: In this paper, a benchmarking framework is presented
for the performance assessment of irrigations systems. Firstly, a data
envelopment analysis (DEA) is applied to measure the technical
efficiency of irrigation systems. This method, based on linear
programming, aims to determine a consistent efficiency ranking of
irrigation systems in which known inputs, such as water volume
supplied and total irrigated area, and a given output corresponding to
the total value of irrigation production are taken into account
simultaneously. Secondly, in order to examine the irrigation
efficiency in more detail, a cross – system comparison is elaborated
using a performance indicators set selected by IWMI. The above
methodologies were applied in Thessaloniki plain, located in
Northern Greece while the results of the application are presented and
discussed. The conjunctive use of DEA and performance indicators
seems to be a very useful tool for efficiency assessment and
identification of best practices in irrigation systems management.
Abstract: This paper proposes a novel stereo vision technique
for top view book scanners which provide us with dense 3d point
clouds of page surfaces. This is a precondition to dewarp bound
volumes independent of 2d information on the page. Our method is
based on algorithms, which normally require the projection of pattern
sequences with structured light. We use image sequences of the
moving stripe lighting of the top view scanner instead of an additional
light projection. Thus the stereo vision setup is simplified without
losing measurement accuracy. Furthermore we improve a surface
model dewarping method through introducing a difference vector
based on real measurements. Although our proposed method is hardly
expensive neither in calculation time nor in hardware requirements
we present good dewarping results even for difficult examples.
Abstract: Crucial information barely visible to the human eye is
often embedded in a series of low resolution images taken of the
same scene. Super resolution reconstruction is the process of
combining several low resolution images into a single higher
resolution image. The ideal algorithm should be fast, and should add
sharpness and details, both at edges and in regions without adding
artifacts. In this paper we propose a super resolution blind
reconstruction technique for linearly degraded images. In our
proposed technique the algorithm is divided into three parts an image
registration, wavelets based fusion and an image restoration. In this
paper three low resolution images are considered which may sub
pixels shifted, rotated, blurred or noisy, the sub pixel shifted images
are registered using affine transformation model; A wavelet based
fusion is performed and the noise is removed using soft thresolding.
Our proposed technique reduces blocking artifacts and also
smoothens the edges and it is also able to restore high frequency
details in an image. Our technique is efficient and computationally
fast having clear perspective of real time implementation.
Abstract: For the first incumbent operator it is very important
to understand how to react when the second operator comes to the
market. In this paper which is prepared for preliminary study of
GSM market in Iran, we have studied five MENA markets
according to the similarity point of view. This paper aims at
analyzing the impact of second entrants in selected markets on
certain marketing key performance indicators (KPI) such as:
Market shares (by operator), prepaid share, minutes of use (MoU),
Price and average revenue per user (ARPU) (for total market
each).
Abstract: Champs Bourcin black grape originated from
Aquitaine, France and planted in Sapa, Lao cai provice, exhibited
high total acidity (11.72 g/L). After 9 days of alcoholic fermentation
at 25oC using Saccharomyces cerevisiae UP3OY5 strain, the ethanol
concentration of wine was 11.5% v/v, however the sharp sour taste of
wine has been found. The malolactic fermentation (MLF) was carried
out by Oenococcus oeni ATCCBAA-1163 strain which had been preadapted
to acid (pH 3-4) and ethanol (8-12%v/v) conditions. We
obtained the highest vivability (83.2%) upon malolactic fermentation
after 5 days at 22oC with early stationary phase O. oeni cells preadapted
to pH 3.5 and 8% v/v ethanol in MRS medium. The malic
acid content in wine was decreased from 5.82 g/L to 0.02 g/L after
MLF (21 days at 22oC). The sensory quality of wine was
significantly improved.
Abstract: We present a method for fast volume rendering using
graphics hardware (GPU). To our knowledge, it is the first implementation
on the GPU. Based on the Shear-Warp algorithm, our
GPU-based method provides real-time frame rates and outperforms
the CPU-based implementation. When the number of slices is not
sufficient, we add in-between slices computed by interpolation. This
improves then the quality of the rendered images. We have also
implemented the ray marching algorithm on the GPU. The results
generated by the three algorithms (CPU-based and GPU-based Shear-
Warp, GPU-based Ray Marching) for two test models has proved that
the ray marching algorithm outperforms the shear-warp methods in
terms of speed up and image quality.
Abstract: This paper presents an intrusion detection system of hybrid neural network model based on RBF and Elman. It is used for anomaly detection and misuse detection. This model has the memory function .It can detect discrete and related aggressive behavior effectively. RBF network is a real-time pattern classifier, and Elman network achieves the memory ability for former event. Based on the hybrid model intrusion detection system uses DARPA data set to do test evaluation. It uses ROC curve to display the test result intuitively. After the experiment it proves this hybrid model intrusion detection system can effectively improve the detection rate, and reduce the rate of false alarm and fail.
Abstract: Electrocardiogram (ECG) segmentation is necessary to help reduce the time consuming task of manually annotating ECG's. Several algorithms have been developed to segment the ECG automatically. We first review several of such methods, and then present a new single lead segmentation method based on Adaptive piecewise constant approximation (APCA) and Piecewise derivative dynamic time warping (PDDTW). The results are tested on the QT database. We compared our results to Laguna's two lead method. Our proposed approach has a comparable mean error, but yields a slightly higher standard deviation than Laguna's method.
Abstract: We have devised a thermal carpet cloak theoretically
and implemented in silicon using layered metamaterial. The layered
metamaterial is composed of single crystalline silicon and its phononic
crystal. The design is based on a coordinate transformation. We
demonstrate the result with numerical simulation. Great cloaking
performance is achieved as a thermal insulator is well hidden under the
thermal carpet cloak. We also show that the thermal carpet cloak can
even the temperature on irregular surface. Using thermal carpet cloak
to manipulate the heat conduction is effective because of its low
complexity.
Abstract: It was analyzed of fatty acid composition of 16 strains
of microalgae lipid fractions isolated from different basins of
Kazakhstan and characterized by stable active growth in the
laboratory. Three species of green microalgae (Oocystis
rhomboideus, Chlorococcum infusionum, Dictyochlorella globosa)
and three species of diatoms (Synedra sp., Nitzshia sp., Pleurosigma
attenuatum) are characterized by a high content of lipids and are
promising for further study as a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Abstract: The problem of robust disturbance rejection (RDR) using a proportional state feedback controller is studied for the case of Left Invertible MIMO generalized state space linear systems with nonlinear uncertain structure. Sufficient conditions for the problem to have a solution are established. The set of all proportional feedback controllers solving the problem subject to these conditions is analytically determined.
Abstract: In this paper, a numerical study has been made to
analyze the transient 2-D flows of a viscous incompressible fluid
through channels with forward or backward constriction. Problems
addressed include flow through sudden contraction and sudden
expansion channel geometries with rounded and increasingly sharp
reentrant corner. In both the cases, numerical results are presented for
the separation and reattachment points, streamlines, vorticity and
flow patterns. A fourth order accurate compact scheme has been
employed to efficiently capture steady state solutions of the
governing equations. It appears from our study that sharpness of the
throat in the channel is one of the important parameters to control the
strength and size of the separation zone without modifying the
general flow patterns. The comparison between the two cases shows
that the upstream geometry plays a significant role on vortex growth
dynamics.
Abstract: Wrist pulse analysis for identification of health status
is found in Ancient Indian as well as Chinese literature. The preprocessing
of wrist pulse is necessary to remove outlier pulses and
fluctuations prior to the analysis of pulse pressure signal. This paper
discusses the identification of irregular pulses present in the pulse
series and intricacies associated with the extraction of time domain
pulse features. An approach of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) has
been utilized for the identification of outlier pulses in the wrist pulse
series. The ambiguity present in the identification of pulse features is
resolved with the help of first derivative of Ensemble Average of
wrist pulse series. An algorithm for detecting tidal and dicrotic notch
in individual wrist pulse segment is proposed.
Abstract: X-ray mammography is the most effective method for
the early detection of breast diseases. However, the typical diagnostic
signs such as microcalcifications and masses are difficult to detect
because mammograms are of low-contrast and noisy. In this paper, a
new algorithm for image denoising and enhancement in Orthogonal
Polynomials Transformation (OPT) is proposed for radiologists to
screen mammograms. In this method, a set of OPT edge coefficients
are scaled to a new set by a scale factor called OPT scale factor. The
new set of coefficients is then inverse transformed resulting in
contrast improved image. Applications of the proposed method to
mammograms with subtle lesions are shown. To validate the
effectiveness of the proposed method, we compare the results to
those obtained by the Histogram Equalization (HE) and the Unsharp
Masking (UM) methods. Our preliminary results strongly suggest
that the proposed method offers considerably improved enhancement
capability over the HE and UM methods.
Abstract: Early detection of lung cancer through chest radiography is a widely used method due to its relatively affordable cost. In this paper, an approach to improve lung nodule visualization on chest radiographs is presented. The approach makes use of linear phase high-frequency emphasis filter for digital filtering and
histogram equalization for contrast enhancement to achieve improvements. Results obtained indicate that a filtered image can
reveal sharper edges and provide more details. Also, contrast enhancement offers a way to further enhance the global (or local) visualization by equalizing the histogram of the pixel values within
the whole image (or a region of interest). The work aims to improve lung nodule visualization of chest radiographs to aid detection of lung cancer which is currently the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide.
Abstract: Static Var Compensator (SVC) is a shunt type FACTS
device which is used in power system primarily for the purpose of
voltage and reactive power control. In this paper, a fuzzy logic based
supplementary controller for Static Var Compensator (SVC) is
developed which is used for damping the rotor angle oscillations and
to improve the transient stability of the power system. Generator
speed and the electrical power are chosen as input signals for the
Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). The effectiveness and feasibility of
the proposed control is demonstrated with Single Machine Infinite
Bus (SMIB) system and multimachine system (WSCC System)
which show improvement over the use of a fixed parameter
controller.
Abstract: This paper studies mixed-mode fracture mechanics in
rock based on experimental and numerical analyses. Experiments
were performed on sharp-cracked specimens using the modified
Arcan specimen test loading device. The modified Arcan specimen
test was, in association with a special loading device, an appropriate
apparatus for experimental mixed-mode fracture analysis. By
varying the loading angle from 0° to 90°, pure mode-I, pure mode-II
and a wide range of mixed-mode data were obtained experimentally.
Using the finite element results, correction factors applied to the
rectangular fracture specimen. By employing experimentally
measured critical loads and the aid of the finite element method,
mixed-mode fracture toughness for the limestone under consideration
determined.
Abstract: Plants are commonly known for its positive
correlation in reducing temperature. Since it can benefit buildings by
modifying the microclimate, it-s also believed capable of reducing
the internal temperature. Various experiments have been done in
Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang to investigate the comparison in
thermal benefits between two rooms, one being a typical control
room (exposed wall) and the other a biofacade room (plant shaded
wall). The investigations were conducted during non-rainy season for
approximately a month. Climbing plant Psophocarpus
tetrogonobulus from legume species was selected as insulation for
the biofacade wall. Conclusions were made on whether the biofacade
can be used to tackle the energy efficiency, based on the parameters
taken into consideration.
Abstract: Cosmic showers, during the transit through space, produce
sub - products as a result of interactions with the intergalactic
or interstellar medium which after entering earth generate secondary
particles called Extensive Air Shower (EAS). Detection and analysis
of High Energy Particle Showers involve a plethora of theoretical and
experimental works with a host of constraints resulting in inaccuracies
in measurements. Therefore, there exist a necessity to develop a
readily available system based on soft-computational approaches
which can be used for EAS analysis. This is due to the fact that soft
computational tools such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN)s can be
trained as classifiers to adapt and learn the surrounding variations. But
single classifiers fail to reach optimality of decision making in many
situations for which Multiple Classifier System (MCS) are preferred
to enhance the ability of the system to make decisions adjusting
to finer variations. This work describes the formation of an MCS
using Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP), Recurrent Neural Network
(RNN) and Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) with data inputs
from correlation mapping Self Organizing Map (SOM) blocks and
the output optimized by another SOM. The results show that the setup
can be adopted for real time practical applications for prediction
of primary energy and location of EAS from density values captured
using detectors in a circular grid.
