Abstract: In general, algorithms to find continuous k-nearest neighbors have been researched on the location based services, monitoring periodically the moving objects such as vehicles and mobile phone. Those researches assume the environment that the number of query points is much less than that of moving objects and the query points are not moved but fixed. In gaming environments, this problem is when computing the next movement considering the neighbors such as flocking, crowd and robot simulations. In this case, every moving object becomes a query point so that the number of query point is same to that of moving objects and the query points are also moving. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the existing algorithms focused on location based services how they operate under gaming environments.
Abstract: The purpose of this research was to study the customers’ behavioral trend for online accommodation system at Bangkonthi District, Samutsongkhram province. The research collected data from 400 online users. A questionnaire was utilized as the tool in collecting information. Descriptive statistics included frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Independent- sample t- test, analysis of variance and Pearson Correlation were also used. The findings of this research revealed that the majority of the respondents were male, 25-32 years old, and graduated a bachelor degree. The respondents mostly worked in private sectors and had monthly income between 10,001-15,000 baht. The regular online users, visiting this system between 3-4 times/month, spending 1-2 hours/time, searched for online accommodation information. This result showed that the users had good and high attitude towards the system. According to the hypothesis testing, the number of online usage had positive related to the behavioral trends: accommodation purchasing intention and recommend the accommodation to others. Furthermore, both the number of online usage and overall attitude had a significant correlation to accommodation purchase intention and recommend the accommodation to others.
Abstract: Demographic aging is the major problem that Taiwanese society is facing, and retirement life adaptation is the most concerning issue. In recent years, studies have suggested that in order to have successful aging and retirement planning, a view for the future is necessary. In Taiwan, civil servants receive better pensions and retirement benefits than do other industries. Therefore, their retirement preparation is considerably more significant than other senior groups in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to understand the correlation of proactive coping and retirement planning of senior civil servants in Taiwan. The method is conducted by questionnaire surveys, with 342 valid questionnaires collected. The results of this study are: 1. The background variables of the interviewees, including age, perceived economic statuses, and retirement statuses, are all significantly related to their proactive coping and retirement planning. 2. Regarding age, the interviewees with ages 55 and above have better proactive coping and retirement planning than those with ages 45 and below. 3. In the aspect of perceived economic statuses, the participants who feel “very good” economic statuses have better proactive coping ability and retirement readiness than those who feel “bad” and “very bad”. 4. Retirees have better proactive coping and retirement planning than those who are still working. 5. Monthly income is significant in retirement planning only. The participants’ retirement planning would be better if they have higher incomes. Furthermore, the participants’ retirement planning would be better if their revenue were €1453~€1937, than if their revenue were below €968. 6. There are positive correlations between proactive coping and retirement planning. 7. Proactive coping can predict retirement planning. The result of this study will be provided as references to the Taiwan government for educational retirement planning policies.
Abstract: Lexical invariants, being a sort of stereotypes within the frames of ordinary consciousness, are created by the members of a language community as a result of uniform division of reality. The invariant meaning is formed in person’s mind gradually in the course of different actualizations of secondary meanings in various contexts. We understand lexical the invariant as abstract language essence containing a set of semantic components. In one of its configurations it is the basis or all or a number of the meanings making up the semantic structure of the word.
Abstract: Systems running these days are huge, complex and exist in many versions. Controlling these versions and tracking their changes became a very hard process as some versions are created using meaningless names or specifications. Many versions of a system are created with no clear difference between them. This leads to mismatching between a user’s request and the version he gets. In this paper, we present a system versions meta-modeling approach that produces versions based on system’s features. This model reduced the number of steps needed to configure a release and gave each version its unique specifications. This approach is applicable for systems that use features in its specification.
Abstract: Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs), Social Enterprises and other actors play an important role in political decisions in governments at the international levels. Especially, such organizations’ and activists’ network in civil society is quite important to effect to the global politics. To solve the complex social problems in global era, diverse actors should corporate each other. Moreover, network of protesters is also contributes to diffuse tactics, information and other resources of social movements.
Based on the findings from the study of International Trade Fairs (ITFs), the author analyzes the network of activists in anti-globalism movement. This research focuses the transition of 54 activists’ whole network in the “protest event” against 2008 G8 summit in Japan. Their network is examined at the three periods: Before protest event phase, during protest event phase and after event phase. A mixed method is used in this study: the author shows the hypothesis from social network analysis and evaluates that with interview data analysis.
This analysis gives the two results. Firstly, the more protesters participate to the various events during the protest event, the more they build the network. After that, active protesters keep their network as well. From interview data, we can understand that the active protesters can build their network and diffuse the information because they communicate with other participants and understand that diverse issues are related.
This paper comes to same conclusion with previous researches: protest events activate the network among the political activists. However, some participants succeed to build their network, others do not. “Networked” activists are participated in the various events for short period of time and encourage the diffusion of information and tactics of social movements.
Abstract: Perfectly suited for natural or man-made emergency and disaster management situations such as flood, earthquakes, tornadoes, or tsunami, multi-target search path planning for a team of rescue agents is known to be computationally hard, and most techniques developed so far come short to successfully estimate optimality gap. A novel mixed-integer linear programming (MIP) formulation is proposed to optimally solve the multi-target multi-agent discrete search and rescue (SAR) path planning problem. Aimed at maximizing cumulative probability of successful target detection, it captures anticipated feedback information associated with possible observation outcomes resulting from projected path execution, while modeling agent discrete actions over all possible moving directions. Problem modeling further takes advantage of network representation to encompass decision variables, expedite compact constraint specification, and lead to substantial problem-solving speed-up. The proposed MIP approach uses CPLEX optimization machinery, efficiently computing near-optimal solutions for practical size problems, while giving a robust upper bound obtained from Lagrangean integrality constraint relaxation. Should eventually a target be positively detected during plan execution, a new problem instance would simply be reformulated from the current state, and then solved over the next decision cycle. A computational experiment shows the feasibility and the value of the proposed approach.
Abstract: A brief review of the empirical studies on the methodology of the stock market decision support would indicate that they are at a threshold of validating the accuracy of the traditional and the fuzzy, artificial neural network and the decision trees. Many researchers have been attempting to compare these models using various data sets worldwide. However, the research community is on the way to the conclusive confidence in the emerged models. This paper attempts to use the automotive sector stock prices from National Stock Exchange (NSE), India and analyze them for the intra-sectorial support for stock market decisions. The study identifies the significant variables and their lags which affect the price of the stocks using OLS analysis and decision tree classifiers.
Abstract: This study involves numerical simulation of the flow
around a NACA2415 airfoil, with a 18° angle of attack, and flow
separation control using a rod, It involves putting a cylindrical rod -
upstream of the leading edge- in vertical translation movement in
order to accelerate the transition of the boundary layer by interaction
between the rod wake and the boundary layer. The viscous, nonstationary
flow is simulated using ANSYS FLUENT 13. The rod
movement is reproduced using the dynamic mesh technique and an
in-house developed UDF (User Define Function). The frequency
varies from 75 to 450 Hz and the considered amplitudes are 2%, and
3% of the foil chord. The frequency chosen closed to the frequency
of separation. Our results showed a substantial modification in the
flow behavior and a maximum drag reduction of 61%.
Abstract: Protein kinases participate in a myriad of cellular
processes of major biomedical interest. The in vivo substrate
specificity of these enzymes is a process determined by several
factors, and despite several years of research on the topic, is still
far from being totally understood. In the present work, we have
quantified the contributions to the kinase substrate specificity of
i) the phosphorylation sites and their surrounding residues in the
sequence and of ii) the association of kinases to adaptor or scaffold
proteins. We have used position-specific scoring matrices (PSSMs),
to represent the stretches of sequences phosphorylated by 93 families
of kinases. We have found negative correlations between the number
of sequences from which a PSSM is generated and the statistical
significance and the performance of that PSSM. Using a subset
of 22 statistically significant PSSMs, we have identified specificity
determinant residues (SDRs) for 86% of the corresponding kinase
families. Our results suggest that different SDRs can function as
positive or negative elements of substrate recognition by the different
families of kinases. Additionally, we have found that human proteins
with known function as adaptors or scaffolds (kAS) tend to interact
with a significantly large fraction of the substrates of the kinases to
which they associate. Based on this characteristic we have identified
a set of 279 potential adaptors/scaffolds (pAS) for human kinases,
which is enriched in Pfam domains and functional terms tightly
related to the proposed function. Moreover, our results show that
for 74.6% of the kinase–pAS association found, the pAS colocalize
with the substrates of the kinases they are associated to. Finally, we
have found evidence suggesting that the association of kinases to
adaptors and scaffolds, may contribute significantly to diminish the
in vivo substrate crossed-specificity of protein kinases. In general, our
results indicate the relevance of several SDRs for both the positive
and negative selection of phosphorylation sites by kinase families and
also suggest that the association of kinases to pAS proteins may be
an important factor for the localization of the enzymes with their set
of substrates.
Abstract: Torrefaction is one of waste to energy (WTE) technologies developing in Taiwan recently, which can reduce the moisture and impuritiesand increase the energy density of biowaste effectively. To understand the torrefaction characteristics of different biowaste and the influences of different torrefaction conditions, four typical biowaste were selected to carry out the torrefaction experiments. The physical and chemical properties of different biowaste prior to and after torrefaction were analyzed and compared. Experimental results show that the contents of elemental carbon and caloric value of the four biowaste were significantly increased after torrefaction. The increase of combustible and caloric value in bamboo was the greatest among the four biowaste. The caloric value of bamboo can be increased from 1526 kcal/kg to 6104 kcal/kg after 300oC and 1 hour torrefaction. The caloric valueof torrefied bamboo was almost four times as the original. The increase of elemental carbon content in wood was the greatest (from 41.03% to 75.24%), and the next was bamboo (from 47.07% to 74.63%). The major parameters which affected the caloric value of torrefied biowaste followed the sequence of biowaste kinds, torrefaction time, and torrefaction temperature. The optimal torrefaction conditions of the experiments were bamboo torrefied at 300oC for 3 hours, and the corresponding caloric value of torrefied bamboo was 5953 kcal/kg. This caloric value is similar to that of brown coal or bituminous coal.
Abstract: In this work, an experimental technique is applied
for the measurements of the vibrations and deformation of a test
transformer core. Since the grid voltage contains some higher
harmonics, in addition to a purely sinusoidal magnetisation of the
core the presence of third harmonic is also studied. The vibrations of
the transformer core for points as well as the surface scan of the leg
show more deformation in the corners of the leg than the middle of
the leg. The influence of the higher harmonic of the magnetisation
on the core deformation is also more significant in the corners of the
leg. The core deformation shape under a sinusoidal magnetisation
with a higher harmonic is more wavy and fluctuating than that under
a purely sinusoidal magnetisation.
Abstract: Membrane distillation is an emerging technology which has been used to produce freshwater and purify different types of aqueous mixtures. Qatar is an arid country where almost 100% of its freshwater demand is supplied through the energy-intensive thermal desalination process. The country’s need for water has reached an all-time high which stipulates finding an alternative way to augment freshwater without adding any drastic affect to the environment. The objective of this paper was to investigate the potential of using the industrial low grade waste heat to produce freshwater using membrane distillation. The main part of this work was conducting a heat audit on selected Qatari chemical industries to estimate the amounts of freshwater produced if such industrial waste heat were to be recovered. By the end of this work, the main objective was met and the heat audit conducted on the Qatari chemical industries enabled us to estimate both the amounts of waste heat which can be potentially recovered in addition to the amounts of freshwater which can be produced if such waste heat were to be recovered.
By the end, the heat audit showed that around 605 Mega Watts of waste heat can be recovered from the studied Qatari chemical industries which resulted in a total daily production of 5078.7 cubic meter of freshwater.
This water can be used in a wide variety of applications such as human consumption or industry. The amount of produced freshwater may look small when compared to that produced through thermal desalination plants; however, one must bear in mind that this water comes from waste and can be used to supply water for small cities or remote areas which are not connected to the water grid. The idea of producing freshwater from the two widely-available wastes (thermal rejected brine and waste heat) seems promising as less environmental and economic impacts will be associated with freshwater production which may in the near future augment the conventional way of producing freshwater currently being thermal desalination. This work has shown that low grade waste heat in the chemical industries in Qatar and perhaps the rest of the world can contribute to additional production of freshwater using membrane distillation without significantly adding to the environmental impact.
Abstract: Performance based design (PBD) is an iterative exercise in which a preliminary trial design of the building structure is selected and if the selected trial design of the building structure does not conform to the desired performance objective, the trial design is revised. In this context, development of a fundamental approach for performance based seismic design of masonry infilled frames with minimum number of trials is an important objective. The paper presents a plastic design procedure based on the energy balance concept for PBD of multi-story multi-bay masonry infilled reinforced concrete (R/C) frames subjected to near-field earthquakes. The proposed energy based plastic design procedure was implemented for trial performance based seismic design of representative masonry infilled reinforced concrete frames with various practically relevant distributions of masonry infill panels over the frame elevation. Non-linear dynamic analyses of the trial PBD of masonry infilled R/C frames was performed under the action of near-field earthquake ground motions. The results of non-linear dynamic analyses demonstrate that the proposed energy method is effective for performance based design of masonry infilled R/C frames under near-field as well as far-field earthquakes.
Abstract: The aim of the study is to determine the relationship between organizational trust level and organizational justice of Municipality officials. Correlational method has been used via descriptive survey model and Organizational Justice Perception Scale, Organizational Trust Inventory and Interpersonal Trust Scale have been applied to 353 participants who work in Konya Metropolitan Municipality and central district municipalities in the study. Frequency as statistical method, Independent Samples t test for binary groups, One Way-ANOVA analyses for multi-groups and Pearson Correlation analysis have been used to determine the relation in the data analysis process. It has been determined in the outcomes of the study that participants have high level of organizational trust, “Interpersonal Trust” is in the first place and there is a significant difference in the favor of male officials in terms of Trust on the Organization Itself and Interpersonal Trust. It has also been understood that officials in district municipalities have higher perception level in all dimensions, there is a significant difference in Trust on the Organization sub-dimension and work status is an important factor on organizational trust perception. Moreover, the study has shown that organizational justice implementations are important in raising trust of official on the organization, administrator and colleagues, and there is a parallel relation between Organizational Trust components and Organizational Trust dimensions.
Abstract: Anaerobic modeling is a useful tool to describe and
simulate the condition and behaviour of anaerobic treatment units for
better effluent quality and biogas generation. The present
investigation deals with the anaerobic treatment of brewery
wastewater with varying organic loads. The chemical oxygen demand
(COD) and total suspended solids (TSS) of the influent and effluent
of the bioreactor were determined at various retention times to
generate data for kinetic coefficients. The bio-kinetic coefficients in
the modified Stover–Kincannon kinetic and methane generation
models were determined to study the performance of anaerobic
digestion process. At steady-state, the determination of the kinetic
coefficient (K), the endogenous decay coefficient (Kd), the maximum
growth rate of microorganisms (μmax), the growth yield coefficient
(Y), ultimate methane yield (Bo), maximum utilization rate constant
Umax and the saturation constant (KB) in the model were calculated to
be 0.046 g/g COD, 0.083 (d¯¹), 0.117 (d-¹), 0.357 g/g, 0.516 (L
CH4/gCODadded), 18.51 (g/L/day) and 13.64 (g/L/day) respectively.
The outcome of this study will help in simulation of anaerobic model
to predict usable methane and good effluent quality during the
treatment of industrial wastewater. Thus, this will protect the
environment, conserve natural resources, saves time and reduce cost
incur by the industries for the discharge of untreated or partially
treated wastewater. It will also contribute to a sustainable long-term
clean development mechanism for the optimization of the methane
produced from anaerobic degradation of waste in a close system.
Abstract: This paper proposes frequency offset (FO) estimation
schemes robust to the non-Gaussian noise for orthogonal frequency
division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. A maximum-likelihood (ML)
scheme and a low-complexity estimation scheme are proposed by
applying the probability density function of the cyclic prefix of
OFDM symbols to the ML criterion. From simulation results, it is
confirmed that the proposed schemes offer a significant FO estimation
performance improvement over the conventional estimation scheme
in non-Gaussian noise environments.
Abstract: Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) is considered as a relatively new technology created as an effective solution to problems associated with low quality consolidation. A SCC mix is defined as successful if it flows freely and cohesively without the intervention of mechanical compaction. The construction industry is showing high tendency to use SCC in many contemporary projects to benefit from the various advantages offered by this technology.
At this point, a main question is raised regarding the effect of enhanced fluidity of SCC on the structural behavior of high strength self-consolidating reinforced concrete.
A three phase research program was conducted at the American University of Beirut (AUB) to address this concern. The first two phases consisted of comparative studies conducted on concrete and mortar mixes prepared with second generation Sulphonated Naphtalene-based superplasticizer (SNF) or third generation Polycarboxylate Ethers-based superplasticizer (PCE). The third phase of the research program investigates and compares the structural performance of high strength reinforced concrete beam specimens prepared with two different generations of superplasticizers that formed the unique variable between the concrete mixes. The beams were designed to test and exhibit flexure, shear, or bond splitting failure.
The outcomes of the experimental work revealed comparable resistance of beam specimens cast using self-compacting concrete and conventional vibrated concrete. The dissimilarities in the experimental values between the SCC and the control VC beams were minimal, leading to a conclusion, that the high consistency of SCC has little effect on the flexural, shear and bond strengths of concrete members.
Abstract: In this paper, we consider the application of Extreme
Value Theory as a risk measurement tool. The Value at Risk, for a set
of indices, from six Stock Exchanges of Frontier markets is
calculated using the Peaks over Threshold method and the
performance of the model index-wise is evaluated using coverage
tests and loss functions. Our results show that “fattailedness” alone of
the data is not enough to justify the use of EVT as a VaR approach.
The structure of the returns dynamics is also a determining factor.
This approach works fine in markets which have had extremes
occurring in the past thus making the model capable of coping with
extremes coming up (Colombo, Tunisia and Zagreb Stock
Exchanges). On the other hand, we find that indices with lower past
than present volatility fail to adequately deal with future extremes
(Mauritius and Kazakhstan). We also conclude that using EVT alone
produces quite static VaR figures not reflecting the actual dynamics
of the data.
