Abstract: The increase in energy demand has raised concerns
over adverse impacts on the environment from energy generation. It
is important to understand the status of energy consumption for
institutions such as Curtin Sarawak to ensure the sustainability of
energy usage, and also to reduce its costs. In this study, a preliminary
audit framework was developed and was conducted around the
Malaysian campus to obtain information such as the number and
specifications of electrical appliances, built-up area and ambient
temperature to understand the relationship of these factors with
energy consumption. It was found that the number and types of
electrical appliances, population and activities in the campus
impacted the energy consumption of Curtin Sarawak directly.
However, the built-up area and ambient temperature showed no clear
correlation with energy consumption. An investigation of the diurnal
and seasonal energy consumption of the campus was also carried out.
From the data, recommendations were made to improve the energy
efficiency of the campus.
Abstract: Serious games have proven to be a useful instrument
to engage learners and increase motivation. Nevertheless, a broadly
accepted, practical instructional design approach to serious games
does not exist. In this paper, we introduce the use of an instructional
design model that has not been applied to serious games yet, and has
some advantages compared to other design approaches. We present
the case of mechanics mechatronics education to illustrate the close
match with timing and role of knowledge and information that the
instructional design model prescribes and how this has been
translated to a rigidly structured game design. The structured
approach answers the learning needs of applicable knowledge within
the target group. It combines advantages of simulations with
strengths of entertainment games to foster learner-s motivation in the
best possible way. A prototype of the game will be evaluated along a
well-respected evaluation method within an advanced test setting
including test and control group.
Abstract: In this study, inhibition of Microcystis aeruginosa by
antialgal alleochemical gramine, was studied by analyzing algal
metabolic activity (represented by esterase and total dehydrogenase
activities) and cell ultrastructure (showing morphological and
ultrastructure alterations using transmission electron microscopy and
DNA ladder analysis). After gramine exposure, esterase and total
dehydrogenase activities were increased firstly but decreased later. In
contrast with the controls, the cells exposed to gramine showed
apparent ultrastructure alterations with thylakoids in breakage,
phycobilins in decrease, lipid and cyanophycin granules abundant
firstly but dissolved afterwards, DNA in fragementation. The
occurrence of increase of metabolic activity and specific granules
reflected that the resistance of cellular response to gramine was
initiated. DNA fragementation associated with the increase of
metabolic activity and specific granules hinted that gramine caused M.
aeruginosa cells to initiate some morphotype of programmed cell
death.
Abstract: In this study, an OCR system for segmentation,
feature extraction and recognition of Ottoman Scripts has been
developed using handwritten characters. Detection of handwritten
characters written by humans is a difficult process. Segmentation and
feature extraction stages are based on geometrical feature analysis,
followed by the chain code transformation of the main strokes of
each character. The output of segmentation is well-defined segments
that can be fed into any classification approach. The classes of main
strokes are identified through left-right Hidden Markov Model
(HMM).
Abstract: Science and technology of ultrasonic is widely used in
recent years for industrial and medicinal application. The acoustical
properties of 2-mercapto substituted pyrimidines viz.,2- Mercapto-4-
(2’,4’ –dichloro phenyl) – 6-(2’ – hydroxyl -4’ –methyl-5’ –
chlorophenyl) pyrimidine and 2 –Mercapto – 4-(4’ –chloro phenyl) –
6-(2’ – hydroxyl -4’ –methyl-5’ –chlorophenyl) pyrimidine have been
investigated from the ultrasonic velocity and density measurements at
different concentration and different % in dioxane-water mixture at
305K. The adiabatic compressibility (βs), acoustic impedance (Z),
intermolecular free length (Lf), apparent molar volume(ϕv) and
relative association (RA) values have been calculated from the
experimental data of velocity and density measurement at
concentration range of 0.01- 0.000625 mol/lit and 70%,75% and 80%
dioxane water mixture. These above parameters are used to discuss
the structural and molecular interactions.
Abstract: This paper investigates the effectiveness of the use of
seismic isolation devices on the overall 3D seismic response of
curved highway viaducts with an emphasis on expansion joints.
Furthermore, an evaluation of the effectiveness of the use of cable
restrainers is presented. For this purpose, the bridge seismic
performance has been evaluated on four different radii of curvature,
considering two cases: restrained and unrestrained curved viaducts.
Depending on the radius of curvature, three-dimensional non-linear
dynamic analysis shows the vulnerability of curved viaducts to
pounding and deck unseating damage. In this study, the efficiency of
using LRB supports combined with cable restrainers on curved
viaducts is demonstrated, not only by reducing in all cases the
possible damage, but also by providing a similar behavior in the
viaducts despite of curvature radius.
Abstract: Positioning the organization in the strategic
environment of its industry is one of the first and most important
phases of the organizational strategic planning and in today
knowledge-based economy has its importance been duplicated for
higher education institutes as the centers of education, knowledge
creation and knowledge worker training. Up to now, various models
with diverse approaches have been applied to investigate
organizations- strategic position in different industries. Regarding the
essential importance and strategic role of quality in higher education
institutes, in this study, a quality-oriented approach has been
suggested to positioning them in their strategic environment. Then
the European Foundation of Quality Management (EFQM) model has
been adopted to position the top Iranian business schools in their
strategic environment. The result of this study can be used in strategic
planning of these institutes as well as the other Iranian business
schools.
Abstract: Bioprocesses are appreciated as difficult to control because their dynamic behavior is highly nonlinear and time varying, in particular, when they are operating in fed batch mode. The research objective of this study was to develop an appropriate control method for a complex bioprocess and to implement it on a laboratory plant. Hence, an intelligent control structure has been designed in order to produce biomass and to maximize the specific growth rate.
Abstract: Traditional multivariate control charts assume that measurement from manufacturing processes follows a multivariate normal distribution. However, this assumption may not hold or may be difficult to verify because not all the measurement from manufacturing processes are normal distributed in practice. This study develops a new multivariate control chart for monitoring the processes with non-normal data. We propose a mechanism based on integrating the one-class classification method and the adaptive technique. The adaptive technique is used to improve the sensitivity to small shift on one-class classification in statistical process control. In addition, this design provides an easy way to allocate the value of type I error so it is easier to be implemented. Finally, the simulation study and the real data from industry are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the propose control charts.
Abstract: The simple methods used to plan and measure non
patterned production system are developed from the basic definition
of working efficiency. Processing time is assigned as the variable
and used to write the equation of production efficiency.
Consequently, such equation is extensively used to develop the
planning method for production of interest using one-dimensional
stock cutting problem. The application of the developed method
shows that production efficiency and production planning can be
determined effectively.
Abstract: The study and development of an innovative material
for building insulation is really important for a sustainable society in order to improve comfort and reducing energy consumption. The aim of this work is the development of insulating panels for
sustainable buildings based on an innovative material made by
cardboard and Phase Change Materials (PCMs).
The research has consisted in laboratory tests whose purpose has been the obtaining of the required properties for insulation panels: lightweight, porous structures and mechanical resistance. PCMs have been used for many years in the building industry as
smart insulation technology because of their properties of storage and release high quantity of latent heat at useful specific temperatures [1]- [2].
The integration of PCMs into cellulose matrix during the waste paper recycling process has been developed in order to obtain a
composite material.
Experiments on the productive process for the realization of insulating panels were done in order to make the new material
suitable for building application. The addition of rising agents
demonstrated the possibility to obtain a lighter structure with better
insulation properties.
Several tests were conducted to verify the new panel properties. The results obtained have shown the possibility to realize an
innovative and sustainable material suitable to replace insulating panels currently used.
Abstract: The regulatory competence of blood glucose homeostasis might determine the degree of academic performance. The aim of this study was to produce a model of students' alcohol use based on glucose homeostasis control and cognitive functions that might define the pathogenetic mechanism of alcohol's effect on academic performance. The study took six hours and thirty minutes on fasting, involving thirteen male students. Disturbances in cognitive functions, precisely a decrease in the effectiveness of active attention and a faster development of fatigue after four to six hours of mental work in alcohol users, compared to abstainers was statistically proven. These disturbances in alcohol users were retained even after seven to ten days of moderate alcohol use and might be the reason for the low academic performances among students who use alcoholic beverages.
Abstract: Infrared communication in the wavelength band 780-
950 nm is very suitable for short-range point-to-point communications.
It is a good choice for vehicle-to-vehicle communication in several
intelligent-transportation-system (ITS) applications such as cooperative
driving, collision warning, and pileup-crash prevention. In this
paper, with the aid of a physical model established in our previous
works, we explore the communication area of an infrared intervehicle
communication system utilizing a typical low-cost cormmercial lightemitting
diodes (LEDs) as the emitter and planar p-i-n photodiodes
as the receiver. The radiation pattern of the emitter fabricated by
aforementioned LEDs and the receiving pattern of the receiver are
approximated by a linear combination of cosinen functions. This
approximation helps us analyze the system performance easily. Both
multilane straight-road conditions and curved-road conditions with
various radius of curvature are taken into account. The condition of
a small car communicating with a big truck, i.e., there is a vertical
mounting height difference between the emitter and the receiver, is
also considered. Our results show that the performance of the system
meets the requirement of aforementioned ITS applications in terms
of the communication area.
Abstract: In this paper, we study the stability of n-dimensional linear fractional neutral differential equation with time delays. By using the Laplace transform, we introduce a characteristic equation for the above system with multiple time delays. We discover that if all roots of the characteristic equation have negative parts, then the equilibrium of the above linear system with fractional order is Lyapunov globally asymptotical stable if the equilibrium exist that is almost the same as that of classical differential equations. An example is provided to show the effectiveness of the approach presented in this paper.
Abstract: The problem of complex use of water resources in
Central Asia by taking into consideration the sovereignty of the states
and increasing demand on use of water for economic aspects are
considered. Complex program with appropriate mathematical
software intended for calculation of possible variants of using the
Amudarya up-stream water resources according to satisfaction of
incompatible requirements of the national economics in irrigation
and energy generation is proposed.
Abstract: This paper presents a new method of fault detection and isolation (FDI) for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell (FC) dynamic systems under an open-loop scheme. This method uses a radial basis function (RBF) neural network to perform fault identification, classification and isolation. The novelty is that the RBF model of independent mode is used to predict the future outputs of the FC stack. One actuator fault, one component fault and three sensor faults have been introduced to the PEMFC systems experience faults between -7% to +10% of fault size in real-time operation. To validate the results, a benchmark model developed by Michigan University is used in the simulation to investigate the effect of these five faults. The developed independent RBF model is tested on MATLAB R2009a/Simulink environment. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method for FDI under an open-loop condition. By using this method, the RBF networks able to detect and isolate all five faults accordingly and accurately.
Abstract: In two studies we tested the hypothesis that the
appropriate linguistic formulation of a deontic rule – i.e. the
formulation which clarifies the monadic nature of deontic operators
- should produce more correct responses than the conditional
formulation in Wason selection task. We tested this assumption by
presenting a prescription rule and a prohibition rule in conditional
vs. proper deontic formulation. We contrasted this hypothesis with
two other hypotheses derived from social contract theory and
relevance theory. According to the first theory, a deontic rule
expressed in terms of cost-benefit should elicit a cheater detection
module, sensible to mental states attributions and thus able to
discriminate intentional rule violations from accidental rule
violations. We tested this prevision by distinguishing the two types
of violations. According to relevance theory, performance in
selection task should improve by increasing cognitive effect and
decreasing cognitive effort. We tested this prevision by focusing
experimental instructions on the rule vs. the action covered by the
rule. In study 1, in which 480 undergraduates participated, we
tested these predictions through a 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 (type of the rule x
rule formulation x type of violation x experimental instructions)
between-subjects design. In study 2 – carried out by means of a 2 x
2 (rule formulation x type of violation) between-subjects design -
we retested the hypothesis of rule formulation vs. the cheaterdetection
hypothesis through a new version of selection task in
which intentional vs. accidental rule violations were better
discriminated. 240 undergraduates participated in this study.
Results corroborate our hypothesis and challenge the contrasting
assumptions. However, they show that the conditional formulation
of deontic rules produces a lower performance than what is
reported in literature.
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a new method for elliptical
object identification. The proposed method adopts a hybrid scheme
which consists of Eigen values of covariance matrices, Circular
Hough transform and Bresenham-s raster scan algorithms. In this
approach we use the fact that the large Eigen values and small Eigen
values of covariance matrices are associated with the major and minor
axial lengths of the ellipse. The centre location of the ellipse can be
identified using circular Hough transform (CHT). Sparse matrix
technique is used to perform CHT. Since sparse matrices squeeze zero
elements and contain a small number of nonzero elements they
provide an advantage of matrix storage space and computational time.
Neighborhood suppression scheme is used to find the valid Hough
peaks. The accurate position of circumference pixels is identified
using raster scan algorithm which uses the geometrical symmetry
property. This method does not require the evaluation of tangents or
curvature of edge contours, which are generally very sensitive to
noise working conditions. The proposed method has the advantages of
small storage, high speed and accuracy in identifying the feature. The
new method has been tested on both synthetic and real images.
Several experiments have been conducted on various images with
considerable background noise to reveal the efficacy and robustness.
Experimental results about the accuracy of the proposed method,
comparisons with Hough transform and its variants and other
tangential based methods are reported.
Abstract: A conjugate heat transfer for steady two-dimensional
mixed convection with magnetic hydrodynamic (MHD) flow of an
incompressible quiescent fluid over an unsteady thermal forming
stretching sheet has been studied. A parameter, M, which is used to
represent the dominance of the magnetic effect has been presented in
governing equations. The similar transformation and an implicit
finite-difference method have been used to analyze the present
problem. The numerical solutions of the flow velocity distributions,
temperature profiles, the wall unknown values of f''(0) and '(θ (0) for
calculating the heat transfer of the similar boundary-layer flow are
carried out as functions of the unsteadiness parameter (S), the Prandtl
number (Pr), the space-dependent parameter (A) and
temperature-dependent parameter (B) for heat source/sink and the
magnetic parameter (M). The effects of these parameters have also
discussed. At the results, it will produce greater heat transfer effect
with a larger Pr and M, S, A, B will reduce heat transfer effects. At
last, conjugate heat transfer for the free convection with a larger G has
a good heat transfer effect better than a smaller G=0.
Abstract: In recent years the large scale use of the power electronic equipment has led to an increase of harmonics in the power system. The harmonics results into a poor power quality and have great adverse economical impact on the utilities and customers. Current harmonics are one of the most common power quality problems and are usually resolved by using shunt active filter (SHAF). The main objective of this work is to develop PI and Fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) to analyze the performance of Shunt Active Filter for mitigating current harmonics under balanced and unbalanced sinusoidal source voltage conditions for normal load and increased load. When the supply voltages are ideal (balanced), both PI and FLC are converging to the same compensation characteristics. However, the supply voltages are non-ideal (unbalanced), FLC offers outstanding results. Simulation results validate the superiority of FLC with triangular membership function over the PI controller.
