Abstract: Clustering in high dimensional space is a difficult
problem which is recurrent in many fields of science and
engineering, e.g., bioinformatics, image processing, pattern
reorganization and data mining. In high dimensional space some of
the dimensions are likely to be irrelevant, thus hiding the possible
clustering. In very high dimensions it is common for all the objects in
a dataset to be nearly equidistant from each other, completely
masking the clusters. Hence, performance of the clustering algorithm
decreases.
In this paper, we propose an algorithmic framework which
combines the (reduct) concept of rough set theory with the k-means
algorithm to remove the irrelevant dimensions in a high dimensional
space and obtain appropriate clusters. Our experiment on test data
shows that this framework increases efficiency of the clustering
process and accuracy of the results.
Abstract: Modeling of the dynamic behavior and motion are
renewed interest in the improved tractive performance of an
intelligent air-cushion tracked vehicle (IACTV). This paper presents
a new dynamical model for the forces on the developed small scale
intelligent air-cushion tracked vehicle moving over swamp peat. The
air cushion system partially supports the 25 % of vehicle total weight
in order to make the vehicle ground contact pressure 7 kN/m2. As the
air-cushion support system can adjust automatically on the terrain, so
the vehicle can move over the terrain without any risks. The springdamper
system is used with the vehicle body to control the aircushion
support system on any undulating terrain by making the
system sinusoidal form. Experiments have been carried out to
investigate the relationships among tractive efficiency, slippage,
traction coefficient, load distribution ratio, tractive effort, motion
resistance and power consumption in given terrain conditions.
Experiment and simulation results show that air-cushion system
improves the vehicle performance by keeping traction coefficient of
71% and tractive efficiency of 62% and the developed model can
meet the demand of transport efficiency with the optimal power
consumption.
Abstract: Predicting short term wind speed is essential in order
to prevent systems in-action from the effects of strong winds. It also
helps in using wind energy as an alternative source of energy, mainly
for Electrical power generation. Wind speed prediction has
applications in Military and civilian fields for air traffic control,
rocket launch, ship navigation etc. The wind speed in near future
depends on the values of other meteorological variables, such as
atmospheric pressure, moisture content, humidity, rainfall etc. The
values of these parameters are obtained from a nearest weather
station and are used to train various forms of neural networks. The
trained model of neural networks is validated using a similar set of
data. The model is then used to predict the wind speed, using the
same meteorological information. This paper reports an Artificial
Neural Network model for short term wind speed prediction, which
uses back propagation algorithm.
Abstract: Differentiated impact of team sports (basketball, indoor soccer, handball) on general haemodynamics and aerobic potential of students who specialize in technical subjects is detected only on the fourth year of studies in the institute of higher education. Those who play basketball and indoor soccer have shown increase of stroke and minute volume of blood indices, pumping and contractile function of the heart, oxygenation of blood and oxygen delivery to tissues, aerobic energy supply and balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity of the nervous regulation mechanism of the circulatory system. Those who play handball have shown these indices statistically decreased. On the whole playing basketball and indoor soccer optimizes the strategy for adaptation of students to the studying process, but playing handball does the opposite thing. The leading factor for adaptation of students is: those who play basketball have increase of minute blood volume which stipulates velocity of the system blood circulation and well-timed oxygen delivery to tissues; those who play indoor soccer have increase of power and velocity of contractile function of the heart; those who play handball have increase of resistance of thorax to the system blood flow which minimizes contractile function of the heart, blood oxygen saturation and delivery of oxygen to tissues.
Abstract: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) with elite PSO
parameters has been developed for power flow analysis under
practical constrained situations. Multiple solutions of the power flow
problem are useful in voltage stability assessment of power system.
A method of determination of multiple power flow solutions is
presented using a hybrid of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and
local search technique. The unique and innovative learning factors of
the PSO algorithm are formulated depending upon the node power
mismatch values to be highly adaptive with the power flow problems.
The local search is applied on the pbest solution obtained by the PSO
algorithm in each iteration. The proposed algorithm performs reliably
and provides multiple solutions when applied on standard and illconditioned
systems. The test results show that the performances of
the proposed algorithm under critical conditions are better than the
conventional methods.
Abstract: There is a acute water problem especially in the dry
season in and around Perundurai (Erode district, Tamil Nadu, India)
where there are more number of tannery units. Hence an attempt was
made to use the waste water from tannery industry for construction
purpose. The mechanical properties such as compressive strength,
tensile strength, flexural strength etc were studied by casting various
concrete specimens in form of cube, cylinders and beams etc and
were found to be satisfactory. Hence some special properties such as
chloride attack, sulphate attack and chemical attack are considered
and comparatively studied with the conventional potable water. In
this experimental study the results of specimens prepared by using
treated and untreated tannery effluent were compared with the
concrete specimens prepared by using potable water. It was observed
that the concrete had some reduction in strength while subjected to
chloride attack, sulphate attack and chemical attack. So admixtures
were selected and optimized in suitable proportion to counter act the
adverse effects and the results were found to be satisfactory.
Abstract: The join dependency provides the basis for obtaining
lossless join decomposition in a classical relational schema. The
existence of Join dependency shows that that the tables always
represent the correct data after being joined. Since the classical
relational databases cannot handle imprecise data, they were
extended to fuzzy relational databases so that uncertain, ambiguous,
imprecise and partially known information can also be stored in
databases in a formal way. However like classical databases, the
fuzzy relational databases also undergoes decomposition during
normalization, the issue of joining the decomposed fuzzy relations
remains intact. Our effort in the present paper is to emphasize on this
issue. In this paper we define fuzzy join dependency in the
framework of type-1 fuzzy relational databases & type-2 fuzzy
relational databases using the concept of fuzzy equality which is
defined using fuzzy functions. We use the fuzzy equi-join operator
for computing the fuzzy equality of two attribute values. We also
discuss the dependency preservation property on execution of this
fuzzy equi- join and derive the necessary condition for the fuzzy
functional dependencies to be preserved on joining the decomposed
fuzzy relations. We also derive the conditions for fuzzy join
dependency to exist in context of both type-1 and type-2 fuzzy
relational databases. We find that unlike the classical relational
databases even the existence of a trivial join dependency does not
ensure lossless join decomposition in type-2 fuzzy relational
databases. Finally we derive the conditions for the fuzzy equality to
be non zero and the qualification of an attribute for fuzzy key.
Abstract: In this research paper we have presented control
architecture for robotic arm movement and trajectory planning using
Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs). This architecture is
used to compensate the uncertainties like; movement, friction and
settling time in robotic arm movement. The genetic algorithms and
fuzzy logic is used to meet the objective of optimal control
movement of robotic arm. This proposed technique represents a
general model for redundant structures and may extend to other
structures. Results show optimal angular movement of joints as result
of evolutionary process. This technique has edge over the other
techniques as minimum mathematics complexity used.
Abstract: Series of tellurite glass of the system 78TeO2-10PbO-
10Li2O-(2-x)Nd2O3-xEr2O3, where x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 was
successfully been made. A study of upconversion luminescence of
the Nd3+/Er3+ co-doped tellurite glass has been carried out. From
Judd-Ofelt analysis, the experimental lifetime, exp. τ of the glass
serie are found higher in the visible region as they varies from
65.17ms to 114.63ms, whereas in the near infrared region (NIR) the
lifetime are varies from 2.133ms to 2.270ms. Meanwhile, the
emission cross section,σ results are found varies from 0.004 x 1020
cm2 to 1.007 x 1020 cm2 with respect to composition. The emission
spectra of the glass are found been contributed from Nd3+ and Er3+
ions by which nine significant transition peaks are observed. The
upconversion mechanism of the co-doped tellurite glass has been
shown in the schematic energy diagrams. In this works, it is found
that the excited state-absorption (ESA) is still dominant in the
upconversion excitation process as the upconversion excitation
mechanism of the Nd3+ excited-state levels is accomplished through a
stepwise multiphonon process. An efficient excitation energy transfer
(ET) has been observed between Nd3+ as a donor and Er3+ as the
acceptor. As a result, respective emission spectra had been observed.
Abstract: Current image-based individual human recognition
methods, such as fingerprints, face, or iris biometric modalities
generally require a cooperative subject, views from certain aspects,
and physical contact or close proximity. These methods cannot
reliably recognize non-cooperating individuals at a distance in the
real world under changing environmental conditions. Gait, which
concerns recognizing individuals by the way they walk, is a relatively
new biometric without these disadvantages. The inherent gait
characteristic of an individual makes it irreplaceable and useful in
visual surveillance.
In this paper, an efficient gait recognition system for human
identification by extracting two features namely width vector of
the binary silhouette and the MPEG-7-based region-based shape
descriptors is proposed. In the proposed method, foreground objects
i.e., human and other moving objects are extracted by estimating
background information by a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and
subsequently, median filtering operation is performed for removing
noises in the background subtracted image. A moving target classification
algorithm is used to separate human being (i.e., pedestrian)
from other foreground objects (viz., vehicles). Shape and boundary
information is used in the moving target classification algorithm.
Subsequently, width vector of the outer contour of binary silhouette
and the MPEG-7 Angular Radial Transform coefficients are taken as
the feature vector. Next, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
is applied to the selected feature vector to reduce its dimensionality.
These extracted feature vectors are used to train an Hidden Markov
Model (HMM) for identification of some individuals. The proposed
system is evaluated using some gait sequences and the experimental
results show the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.
Abstract: Text-based game is supposed to be a low resource
consumption application that delivers good performances when
compared to graphical-intensive type of games. But, nowadays, some
of the online text-based games are not offering performances that are
acceptable to the users. Therefore, an online text-based game called
Star_Quest has been developed in order to analyze its behavior under
different performance measurements. Performance metrics such as
throughput, scalability, response time and page loading time are
captured to yield the performance of the game. The techniques in
performing the load testing are also disclosed to exhibit the viability
of our work. The comparative assessment between the results
obtained and the accepted level of performances are conducted as to
determine the performance level of the game. The study reveals that
the developed game managed to meet all the performance objectives
set forth.
Abstract: Chemically defined Schlegel-s medium was modified
to improve production of cell growth and other metabolites that are
produced by fluorescent pseudomonad R62 strain. The modified
medium does not require pH control as pH changes are kept within ±
0.2 units of the initial pH 7.1 during fermentation. The siderophore
production was optimized for the fluorescent pseudomonad strain in
the modified medium containing 1% glycerol as a major carbon
source supplemented with 0.05% succinic acid and 0.5% Ltryptophan.
Indole-3 acetic acid (IAA) production was higher when
L-tryptophan was used at 0.5%. The 2,4- diacetylphloroglucinol
(DAPG) was higher with amended three trace elements in medium.
The optimized medium produced 2.28 g/l of dry cell mass and 900
mg/l of siderophore at the end of 36 h cultivation, while the
production levels of IAA and DAPG were 65 mg/l and 81 mg/l
respectively at the end of 48 h cultivation.
Abstract: In this article, a method has been offered to classify
normal and defective tiles using wavelet transform and artificial
neural networks. The proposed algorithm calculates max and min
medians as well as the standard deviation and average of detail
images obtained from wavelet filters, then comes by feature vectors
and attempts to classify the given tile using a Perceptron neural
network with a single hidden layer. In this study along with the
proposal of using median of optimum points as the basic feature and
its comparison with the rest of the statistical features in the wavelet
field, the relational advantages of Haar wavelet is investigated. This
method has been experimented on a number of various tile designs
and in average, it has been valid for over 90% of the cases. Amongst
the other advantages, high speed and low calculating load are
prominent.
Abstract: This study investigated the number of Aedes larvae,
the key breeding sites of Aedes sp., and the relationship between
climatic factors and the incidence of DHF in Samui Islands. We
conducted our questionnaire and larval surveys from randomly
selected 105 households in Samui Islands in July-September 2006.
Pearson-s correlation coefficient was used to explore the primary
association between the DHF incidence and all climatic factors.
Multiple stepwise regression technique was then used to fit the
statistical model. The results showed that the positive indoor
containers were small jars, cement tanks, and plastic tanks. The
positive outdoor containers were small jars, cement tanks, plastic
tanks, used cans, tires, plastic bottles, discarded objects, pot saucers,
plant pots, and areca husks. All Ae. albopictus larval indices (i.e., CI,
HI, and BI) were higher than Ae. aegypti larval indices in this area.
These larval indices were higher than WHO standard. This indicated
a high risk of DHF transmission at Samui Islands. The multiple
stepwise regression model was y = –288.80 + 11.024xmean temp. The
mean temperature was positively associated with the DHF incidence
in this area.
Abstract: This paper investigates and compares performance of
various conventional and fuzzy logic based controllers at generator
locations for oscillation damping. Performance of combination of
conventional and fuzzy logic based controllers also studied by
comparing overshoot on the active power deviation response for a
small disturbance and damping ratio of the critical mode. Fuzzy logic
based controllers can not be modeled in the state space form to get
the eigenvalues and corresponding damping ratios of various modes
of generators and controllers. Hence, a new method based on tracing
envelop of time domain waveform is also presented and used in the
paper for comparing performance of controllers. The paper also
shows that if the fuzzy based controllers designed separately
combining them could not lead to a better performance.
Abstract: ISO 9000 is the most popular and widely adopted meta-standard for quality and operational improvements. However, only limited empirical research has been conducted to examine the impact of ISO 9000 on operational performance based on objective and longitudinal data. To reveal any causal relationship between the adoption of ISO 9000 and operational performance, we examined the timing and magnitude of change in time-based performance as a result of ISO 9000 adoption. We analyzed the changes in operating cycle, inventory days, and account receivable days prior and after the implementation of ISO 9000 in 695 publicly listed manufacturing firms. We found that ISO 9000 certified firms shortened their operating cycle time by 5.28 days one year after the implementation of ISO 9000. In the long-run (3 years after certification), certified firms showed continuous improvement in time-based efficiency, and experienced a shorter operating cycle time of 11 days than that of non-certified firms. There was an average of 6.5% improvement in operating cycle time for ISO 9000 certified firms. Both inventory days and account receivable days showed similar significant improvements after the implementation of ISO 9000, too.
Abstract: Design for Disassembly (DfD) aims to reuse the
structural components instead of demolition followed by recycling of
the demolition debris. This concept preserves the invested embodied
energy of materials, thus reducing inputs of new embodied energy
during materials reprocessing or remanufacturing. Both analytical and
experimental research on a proposed DfD beam-column connection
for use in residential apartments is currently investigated at the
National University of Singapore in collaboration with the Housing
and Development Board of Singapore. The present study reports on
the results of a numerical analysis of the proposed connection utilizing
finite element analysis. The numerical model was calibrated and
validated by comparison against experimental results. Results of a
parametric study will also be presented and discussed.
Abstract: Flour from Mucuna beans (Mucuna pruriens) were
used in producing texturized meat analogue using a single screw
extruder to monitor modifications on the proximate composition and
the functional properties at high moisture level. Response surface
methodology based on Box Behnken design at three levels of barrel
temperature (110, 120, 130°C), screw speed (100,120,140rpm) and
feed moisture (44, 47, 50%) were used in 17 runs. Regression models
describing the effect of variables on the product responses were
obtained. Descriptive profile analyses and consumer acceptability
test were carried out on optimized flavoured extruded meat analogue.
Responses were mostly affected by barrel temperature and moisture
level and to a lesser extent by screw speed. Optimization results
based on desirability concept indicated that a barrel temperature of
120.15°C, feed moisture of 47% and screw speed of 119.19 rpm
would produce meat analogue of preferable proximate composition,
functional and sensory properties which reveals consumers` likeness
for the product.
Abstract: Nowadays, OCR systems have got several
applications and are increasingly employed in daily life. Much
research has been done regarding the identification of Latin,
Japanese, and Chinese characters. However, very little investigation
has been performed regarding Farsi/Arabic characters recognition.
Probably the reason is difficulty and complexity of those characters
identification compared to the others and limitation of IT activities in
Farsi and Arabic speaking countries. In this paper, a technique has
been employed to identify isolated Farsi/Arabic characters. A chain
code based algorithm along with other significant peculiarities such
as number and location of dots and auxiliary parts, and the number of
holes existing in the isolated character has been used in this study to
identify Farsi/Arabic characters. Experimental results show the
relatively high accuracy of the method developed when it is tested on
several standard Farsi fonts.
Abstract: In the present communication, we have studied
different variations in the entropy measures in the different states of
queueing processes. In case of steady state queuing process, it has
been shown that as the arrival rate increases, the uncertainty
increases whereas in the case of non-steady birth-death process, it is
shown that the uncertainty varies differently. In this pattern, it first
increases and attains its maximum value and then with the passage of
time, it decreases and attains its minimum value.
