Abstract: In the transition zone between aquifers and basal aquitards, the perchloroethene (PCE)-pools are more recalcitrant than those elsewhere in the aquifer. Although biodegradation of chloroethenes occur in this zone, it is a slow process and a remediation strategy is needed. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that combined strategy of biostimulation and in situ chemical reduction (ISCR) is more efficient than the two separated strategies. Four different microcosm experiments with sediment and groundwater of a selected field site where an aged pool exists at the bottom of a transition zone were designed under i) natural conditions, ii) biostimulation with lactic acid, iii) ISCR with zero-value iron (ZVI) and under iv) a combined strategy with lactic acid and ZVI. Biotic and abiotic dehalogenation, terminal electron acceptor processes and evolution of microbial communities were determined for each experiment. The main results were: i) reductive dehalogenation of PCE-pools occurs under sulfate-reducing conditions; ii) biostimulation with lactic acid supports more pronounced reductive dehalogenation of PCE and trichloroethene (TCE), but results in an accumulation of 1,2-cis-dichloroethene (cDCE); iii) ISCR with ZVI produces a sustained dehalogenation of PCE and its metabolites iv) combined strategy of biostimulation and ISCR results in a fast dehalogenation of PCE and TCE and a sustained dehalogenation of cisDCE. These findings suggest that biostimulation and ISCR with ZVI are the most suitable strategies for a complete reductive dehalogenation of PCE-pools in the transition zone and further to enable the dissolution of dense non-aqueous phase liquids.
Abstract: Crop yields have not increased as dramatically as the demand for food. One method to counteract this is to use pesticides to keep away predators, e.g. several forms of insecticide are available to fight insects. These insecticides and pesticides are both controversial as their application and their residue in the food product can also harm humans. In this study an alternative method to combat insects is studied. A physical insect-killing effect of SiO2 particles is used. The particles are applied on fibres to avoid erosion in the fields, which would occur when applied separately. The development of such SiO2 functionalized PP fibres is shown.
Abstract: Heightened concerns over the amount of carbon
emitted from coal-related processes are generating shifts to the
application of biomass. In co-gasification, where coal is gasified
along with biomass, the biomass may be fed together with coal (cofeeding)
or an independent biomass gasifier needs to be integrated
with the coal gasifier. The main aim of this work is to evaluate the
biomass introduction methods in coal co-gasification. This includes
the evaluation of biomass concentration input (B0 to B100) and its
gasification performance. A process model is developed and
simulated in Aspen HYSYS, where both coal and biomass are
modelled according to its ultimate analysis. It was found that the
syngas produced increased with increasing biomass content for both
co-feeding and independent schemes. However, the heating values
and heat duties decreases with biomass concentration as more CO2
are produced from complete combustion.
Abstract: According to the independence, accuracy and controllability of the driving/braking torque of the distributed drive electric vehicle, a control strategy of differential drive assisted steering was designed. Firstly, the assisted curve under different speed and steering wheel torque was developed and the differential torques were distributed to the right and left front wheels. Then the steering return ability assisted control algorithm was designed. At last, the joint simulation was conducted by CarSim/Simulink. The result indicated: the differential drive assisted steering algorithm could provide enough steering drive-assisted under low speed and improve the steering portability. Along with the increase of the speed, the provided steering drive-assisted decreased. With the control algorithm, the steering stiffness of the steering system increased along with the increase of the speed, which ensures the driver’s road feeling. The control algorithm of differential drive assisted steering could avoid the understeer under low speed effectively.

Abstract: Integrins are a large family of multidomain α/β cell
signaling receptors. Some integrins contain an additional inserted I
domain, whose earliest expression appears to be with the chordates,
since they are observed in the urochordates Ciona intestinalis (vase
tunicate) and Halocynthia roretzi (sea pineapple), but not in integrins
of earlier diverging species. The domain-s presence is viewed as a
hallmark of integrins of higher metazoans, however in vertebrates,
there are clearly three structurally-different classes: integrins without
I domains, and two groups of integrins with I domains but separable
by the presence or absence of an additional αC helix. For example,
the αI domains in collagen-binding integrins from Osteichthyes
(bony fish) and all higher vertebrates contain the specific αC helix,
whereas the αI domains in non-collagen binding integrins from
vertebrates and the αI domains from earlier diverging urochordate
integrins, i.e. tunicates, do not. Unfortunately, within the early
chordates, there is an evolutionary gap due to extinctions between the
tunicates and cartilaginous fish. This, coupled with a knowledge gap
due to the lack of complete genomic data from surviving species,
means that the origin of collagen-binding αC-containing αI domains
remains unknown. Here, we analyzed two available genomes from
Callorhinchus milii (ghost shark/elephant shark; Chondrichthyes –
cartilaginous fish) and Petromyzon marinus (sea lamprey;
Agnathostomata), and several available Expression Sequence Tags
from two Chondrichthyes species: Raja erinacea (little skate) and
Squalus acanthias (dogfish shark); and Eptatretus burgeri (inshore
hagfish; Agnathostomata), which evolutionary reside between the
urochordates and osteichthyes. In P. marinus, we observed several
fragments coding for the αC-containing αI domain, allowing us to
shed more light on the evolution of the collagen-binding integrins.
Abstract: Lighvan cheese is basically made from sheep milk in
the area of Sahand mountainside which is located in the North West
of Iran. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect
of enterococci isolated from traditional Lighvan cheese on the quality
of Iranian UF white during ripening. The experimental design was
split plot based on randomized complete blocks, main plots were four
types of starters and subplots were different ripening durations.

Abstract: Fruit drying is a well known process mostly used for
preservation of fruits. Osmotic dehydration of apricot slices were
carried out in three different salt-sucrose concentrations and four
different temperatures. Also three different weight ratios of solution
to sample were conducted to one set of experiments. The dehydration
curves were constructed using Peleg-s model. Increasing the solution
volume increased the mass transfer rate and hence the solid gain
increased rapidly. Increasing the volume of osmotic media caused an
increase in overall mass transfer but a 'solution to sample' ratio of 5:1
gave the best product quality. The best temperature and concentration
that had a high water loss to solid gain ratio and an acceptable taste
were 40°C and 5%, respectively.
Abstract: The relationships between Proteolysis and soluble
calcium levels with hardness of cheese texture were investigated in
Iranian UF white cheese during 90 d ripening. Cheeses were sampled
in interior and exterior. Results showed that levels of proteolysis,
soluble calcium and hardness of cheese texture changed significantly
(p< 0.05) over ripening. Levels of proteolysis and hardness were
significantly (p< 0.05) different in interior and exterior zones of
cheeses. External zones of cheeses became softer and had higher
levels of proteolysis compared to internal zones during ripening. The
highest correlation coefficient (r2= 0.979; p
Abstract: This paper presents the development of a hybrid
thermal model for the EVO Electric AFM 140 Axial Flux Permanent
Magnet (AFPM) machine as used in hybrid and electric vehicles. The
adopted approach is based on a hybrid lumped parameter and finite
difference method. The proposed method divides each motor
component into regular elements which are connected together in a
thermal resistance network representing all the physical connections
in all three dimensions. The element shape and size are chosen
according to the component geometry to ensure consistency. The
fluid domain is lumped into one region with averaged heat transfer
parameters connecting it to the solid domain. Some model parameters
are obtained from Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation and
empirical data. The hybrid thermal model is described by a set of
coupled linear first order differential equations which is discretised
and solved iteratively to obtain the temperature profile. The
computation involved is low and thus the model is suitable for
transient temperature predictions. The maximum error in temperature
prediction is 3.4% and the mean error is consistently lower than the
mean error due to uncertainty in measurements. The details of the
model development, temperature predictions and suggestions for
design improvements are presented in this paper.
Abstract: Nano sized zirconium dioxide in monoclinic phase (m-ZrO2) has been synthesized in pure form through co-precipitation processing at different calcination temperatures and has been characterized by several techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis Spectroscopy and SEM. The dielectric and capacitance values of the pelletized samples have been examined at room temperature as the functions of frequency. The higher dielectric constant value of the sample having larger grain size proves the strong influence of grain size on the dielectric constant.
Abstract: Novel Coconut oil nanofluids of various concentrations have been prepared through ultrasonically assisted sol-gel method. The structural and morphological properties of the copper oxide nanoparticle have been analyzed with respectively and it revealed the monoclinic end-centered structure of crystallite and shuttle like flake morphology of agglomerates. Ultrasonic studies have been made for the nanofluids at different temperatures. The molecular interactions responsible for the changes in acoustical parameter with respect to concentration and temperature are discussed.
Abstract: Over the past years, the EMCCD has had a profound
influence on photon starved imaging applications relying on its unique
multiplication register based on the impact ionization effect in the
silicon. High signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) means high image quality.
Thus, SNR improvement is important for the EMCCD. This work
analyzes the SNR performance of an EMCCD with gain off and on. In
each mode, simplified SNR models are established for different
integration times. The SNR curves are divided into readout noise (or
CIC) region and shot noise region by integration time. Theoretical
SNR values comparing long frame integration and frame adding in
each region are presented and discussed to figure out which method is
more effective. In order to further improve the SNR performance,
pixel binning is introduced into the EMCCD. The results show that
pixel binning does obviously improve the SNR performance, but at the
expensive of the spatial resolution.
Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the problem of driving and
herding a collection of autonomous actors to a given area. Then, a
new method based on multi-agent coordination is proposed for
solving the problem.
In our proposed method, we assume that the environment is
covered by sensors. When an event is occurred, sensors forward
information to a sink node. Based on received information, the sink
node will estimate the direction and the speed of movement of actors
and announce the obtained value to the actors. The actors coordinate
to reach the target location.
Abstract: Nuts are part of a healthy diet such as Mediterranean diet. Benefits of nuts in reducing the risk of heart disease has been reasonably attributed to their composition of vitamins, minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, fiber and phytochemicals such as polyphenols, tocopherols, squalene and phytosterols. More than 75% of total fatty acids of nuts are unsaturated. α- tocopherol is the main tocopherol isomer present in most of the nuts. While walnuts, Brazil nut, cashew nut, peanut, pecan and pistachio nuts are rich in γ- tocopherol. β- sitosterol is dominant sterol in nuts. Pistachio and pine nut have the highest total phytosterol and Brazil nut and English walnut the lowest. Walnuts also contain large amount of phenolic compounds compared with other nuts. Nuts are rich in compounds with antioxidant properties and their consumption can offer preventing from incidence of many diseases including cardiovascular.
