Abstract: With the intention of screening for heavy metal
tolerance, a number of bacteria were isolated and characterized from
a pristine soil. Two Gram positive isolates were identified as
Paenibacillus sp. and Bacillus thuringeinsis. Tolerance of Cd2+, Cu2+
and Zn2+ by these bacteria was studied and found that both bacteria
were highly sensitive to Cu2+ compared to other two metals. Both
bacteria showed the same pattern of metal tolerance in the order Zn+
> Cd2+ > Cu2+. When the metal tolerance in both bacteria was
compared, Paenibacillus sp. showed the highest sensitivity to Cu2+
where as B. thuringiensis showed highest sensitivity to Cd2+ and Zn2+
.These findings revealed the potential of Paenibacillus sp. in
developing a biosensor to detect Cu2+ in environmental samples.
Abstract: In this paper we use exponential particle swarm
optimization (EPSO) to cluster data. Then we compare between
(EPSO) clustering algorithm which depends on exponential variation
for the inertia weight and particle swarm optimization (PSO)
clustering algorithm which depends on linear inertia weight. This
comparison is evaluated on five data sets. The experimental results
show that EPSO clustering algorithm increases the possibility to find
the optimal positions as it decrease the number of failure. Also show
that (EPSO) clustering algorithm has a smaller quantization error
than (PSO) clustering algorithm, i.e. (EPSO) clustering algorithm
more accurate than (PSO) clustering algorithm.
Abstract: This paper considers the development of a two-point
predictor-corrector block method for solving delay differential
equations. The formulae are represented in divided difference form
and the algorithm is implemented in variable stepsize variable order
technique. The block method produces two new values at a single
integration step. Numerical results are compared with existing
methods and it is evident that the block method performs very well.
Stability regions of the block method are also investigated.
Abstract: This work relates the development of an optical fiber
(OF) sensor for the detection and quantification of single walled
carbon nanotubes in aqueous solutions. The developed OF displays a
compact design, it requires less expensive materials and equipment
as well as low volume of sample (0.2 mL). This methodology was
also validated by the comparison of its analytical performance with
that of a standard methodology based on ultraviolet-visible
spectroscopy. The developed OF sensor follows the general SDS
calibration proposed for OF sensors as a more suitable calibration
fitting compared with classical calibrations.
Abstract: Construction delay is unavoidable in developing
countries including Malaysia. It is defined as time overrun or
extension of time for completion of a project. The purpose of the
study is to determine the causes of delay in Malaysian construction
industries based on previous worldwide research. The field survey
conducted includes the experienced developers, consultants and
contractors in Malaysia. 34 causes of the construction delay have
been determined and 24 have been selected using the Rasch model
analysis. The analysis result will be used as the baseline for the next
research to find the causes of delay in the Malaysian construction
industry taking place in Malaysian higher learning institutions.
Abstract: Impaired fertility may be the result of indirect
consumption of anti-fertility agents through food. Monosodium
glutamate (MSG) has been widely used as food additive, flavour
enhancer and included in vaccines. This study focuses in determining
the gonadotoxic and cytotoxic effect of MSG on selected sperm
parameters such as sperm viability, sperm membrane integrity and
testes cytoarchitecture of male mice via histological examination to
determine its effect on spermatogenesis. Twenty-four Mus musculus
were randomly divided into 4 groups and given intraperitoneal
injections (IP) daily for 14 days of different MSG concentrations at
250, 500 and 1000mg/kg MSG to body weight to induce obesity.
Saline was given to control group. Mice were sacrificed and analysis
revealed abnormalities in values for sperm parameters and damages
to testes cytoarchitecture of male mice. The results recorded
decreased viability (p0.05) with degenerative structures in seminiferous tubule of
testes. The results indicated various implications of MSG on male
mice reproductive system which has consequences in fertility
potential.
Abstract: The present study examines the adsorption of phenol, 3-nitrophenol and dyes (methylene blue, alizarine yellow), from aqueous solutions onto a commercial activated carbon. Two different operations, semi-batch and continuous with reflux, were applied. The commercial activated carbon exhibits high adsorption abilities for phenol, 3-nitrophenol and dyes (methylene blue and alizarin yellow) from their aqueous solutions. The adsorption of all adsorbates after 1 h is higher by the continuous operation with reflux than by the semibatch operation. The adsorption of phenol is higher than that of 3-nitrophenol for both operations. Similarly, the adsorption of alizarin yellow is higher than that of methylene blue for both operations. The regenerated commercial activated carbon regains its adsorption ability due to the removal of the adsorbate from its pores during the regeneration.
Abstract: Mammographic images and data analysis to
facilitate modelling or computer aided diagnostic (CAD) software development should best be done using a common database that can handle various mammographic image file
formats and relate these to other patient information.
This would optimize the use of the data as both primary
reporting and enhanced information extraction of research data could be performed from the single dataset. One desired
improvement is the integration of DICOM file header information into the database, as an efficient and reliable source of supplementary patient information intrinsically
available in the images.
The purpose of this paper was to design a suitable database to link and integrate different types of image files and gather common information that can be further used for research
purposes. An interface was developed for accessing, adding,
updating, modifying and extracting data from the common
database, enhancing the future possible application of the data in CAD processing.
Technically, future developments envisaged include the creation of an advanced search function to selects image files
based on descriptor combinations. Results can be further used for specific CAD processing and other research. Design of a
user friendly configuration utility for importing of the required fields from the DICOM files must be done.
Abstract: Interventional cardiologists are at greater risk from
radiation exposure as a result of the procedures they undertake than
most other medical specialists. A study was performed to evaluate
operator dose during interventional cardiology procedures and to
establish methods of operator dose reduction with a radiation
protective device. Different procedure technique and use of
protective tools can explain big difference in the annual equivalent
dose received by the professionals. Strategies to prevent and
monitor radiation exposure, advanced protective shielding and
effective radiation monitoring methods should be applied.
Abstract: In this paper, we apply the PQ theory with shunt active power filter in an unbalanced and distorted power system voltage to compensate the perturbations generated by non linear load. The power factor is also improved in the current source. The PLL system is used to extract the fundamental component of the even sequence under conditions mentioned of the power system voltage.
Abstract: The role of neighborhood center as semi public (the
balance space) is disappeared in bonding between private and public
in new urbanism. In this way, a hierarchical principle in the
traditional neighborhood center appears to create or develop the
conditions for residents` relationships and belonging. This paper
evaluates significant of hierarchical principles of the neighborhood
center in residents` territoriality and its factors. In this way Miandeh
neighborhood center from Boshrooyeh city was determined as a case
study area. Results indicated that a hierarchical principle is the best
instrument to improve the territoriality as the subcomponent of place
belonging in residents. The findings help the urban designer to
revitalization the neighborhoods and proceedings in organization of
physical space.
Abstract: Self-compacting concrete (SCC), a new kind of high
performance concrete (HPC) have been first developed in Japan in
1986. The development of SCC has made casting of dense
reinforcement and mass concrete convenient, has minimized noise.
Fresh self-compacting concrete (SCC) flows into formwork and
around obstructions under its own weight to fill it completely and
self-compact (without any need for vibration), without any
segregation and blocking. The elimination of the need for
compaction leads to better quality concrete and substantial
improvement of working conditions. SCC mixes generally have a
much higher content of fine fillers, including cement, and produce
excessively high compressive strength concrete, which restricts its
field of application to special concrete only. To use SCC mixes in
general concrete construction practice, requires low cost materials to
make inexpensive concrete.
Rice husk ash (RHA) has been used as a highly reactive
pozzolanic material to improve the microstructure of the interfacial
transition zone (ITZ) between the cement paste and the aggregate in
self compacting concrete. Mechanical experiments of RHA blended
Portland cement concretes revealed that in addition to the pozzolanic
reactivity of RHA (chemical aspect), the particle grading (physical
aspect) of cement and RHA mixtures also exerted significant
influences on the blending efficiency.
The scope of this research was to determine the usefulness of Rice
husk ash (RHA) in the development of economical self compacting
concrete (SCC). The cost of materials will be decreased by reducing
the cement content by using waste material like rice husk ash instead
of.
This paper presents a study on the development of Mechanical
properties up to 180 days of self compacting and ordinary concretes
with rice-husk ash (RHA), from a rice paddy milling industry in
Rasht (Iran). Two different replacement percentages of cement by
RHA, 10%, and 20%, and two different water/cementicious material
ratios (0.40 and 0.35), were used for both of self compacting and
normal concrete specimens. The results are compared with those of
the self compacting concrete without RHA, with compressive,
flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. It is concluded that RHA
provides a positive effect on the Mechanical properties at age after
60 days.
Base of the result self compacting concrete specimens have higher
value than normal concrete specimens in all test except modulus of
elasticity. Also specimens with 20% replacement of cement by RHA
have the best performance.
Abstract: Changes in stem diameter of orchid plants were
investigated in a control growing climate. Previous studies have
focused on stem diameter in relation to plant water on terrestrial
plants in order to schedule the irrigation. The objective of this work
was to evaluate the ability of the strain gauges to capture changes in
the epiphytes plant stem. Experiments were carried out by using the
sympodial orchid, Dendrobium Sonia in a stressed condition. From
the findings, the sensor can detect changes in the plant stem and the
result can easily be used as a reference for further studies for the
development of a proper watering system.
Abstract: In text categorization problem the most used method
for documents representation is based on words frequency vectors
called VSM (Vector Space Model). This representation is based only
on words from documents and in this case loses any “word context"
information found in the document. In this article we make a
comparison between the classical method of document representation
and a method called Suffix Tree Document Model (STDM) that is
based on representing documents in the Suffix Tree format. For the
STDM model we proposed a new approach for documents
representation and a new formula for computing the similarity
between two documents. Thus we propose to build the suffix tree
only for any two documents at a time. This approach is faster, it has
lower memory consumption and use entire document representation
without using methods for disposing nodes. Also for this method is
proposed a formula for computing the similarity between documents,
which improves substantially the clustering quality. This
representation method was validated using HAC - Hierarchical
Agglomerative Clustering. In this context we experiment also the
stemming influence in the document preprocessing step and highlight
the difference between similarity or dissimilarity measures to find
“closer" documents.
Abstract: Intensive changes of environment and strong market
competition have raised management of information and knowledge
to the strategic level of companies. In a knowledge based economy
only those organizations are capable of living which have up-to-date,
special knowledge and they are able to exploit and develop it.
Companies have to know what knowledge they have by taking a
survey of organizational knowledge and they have to fix actual and
additional knowledge in organizational memory. The question is how
to identify, acquire, fix and use knowledge effectively. The paper will
show that over and above the tools of information technology
supporting acquisition, storage and use of information and
organizational learning as well as knowledge coming into being as a
result of it, fixing and storage of knowledge in the memory of a
company play an important role in the intelligence of organizations
and competitiveness of a company.
Abstract: In this paper the main objective is to analyze the
quality of service of the bus companies operating in the city of
Campos, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This analysis,
based on the opinion of the bus customers, will help to determine
their degree of satisfaction with the service provided by the bus
companies. The result of this assessment shows that the bus
customers are displeased with the quality of service supplied by the
bus companies. Therefore, it is necessary to identify alternative
solutions to minimize the consequences of the main problems related
to customers- dissatisfaction identified in our evaluation and to help
the bus companies operating in Campos better fulfill their riders-
needs.
Abstract: The continuity in the electric supply of the electric installations is becoming one of the main requirements of the electric supply network (generation, transmission, and distribution of the electric energy). The achievement of this requirement depends from one side on the structure of the electric network and on the other side on the avaibility of the reserve source provided to maintain the supply in case of failure of the principal one. The avaibility of supply does not only depends on the reliability parameters of the both sources (principal and reserve) but it also depends on the reliability of the circuit breaker which plays the role of interlocking the reserve source in case of failure of the principal one. In addition, the principal source being under operation, its control can be ideal and sure, however, for the reserve source being in stop, a preventive maintenances which proceed on time intervals (periodicity) and for well defined lengths of time are envisaged, so that this source will always available in case of the principal source failure. The choice of the periodicity of preventive maintenance of the source of reserve influences directly the reliability of the electric feeder system In this work and on the basis of the semi- markovian's processes, the influence of the time of interlocking the reserve source upon the reliability of an industrial electric network is studied and is given the optimal time of interlocking the reserve source in case of failure the principal one, also the influence of the periodicity of the preventive maintenance of the source of reserve is studied and is given the optimal periodicity.
Abstract: This paper aims to explain the project carried out at
the University of Cordoba, specifically at the High Polytechnic
School in collaboration with two other organizations belonging to the
Andalusian Ministry of Innovation, Science and Business:
Andalusian Innovation and Development Agency (IDEA agency) [1]
and the Territorial Net of Entrepreneurship Support (in Spanish Red
Territorial de Apoyo al Emprendedor) [11].
The project is being developed in several stages of which only the
first one has already been completed. However, several important
preliminary results derive from it, based mainly in the description of
the nature of entrepreneurship in the field of university education and
its impact on student-s competency as recommended by the European
Higher Education Area. Some problems holding back the correct
future development will also be shown as derived from the specific
context of application of the project.
Abstract: Magnesium is used implant material potentially for
non-toxicity to the human body. Due to the excellent
bio-compatibility, Mg alloys is applied to implants avoiding removal
second surgery. However, it is found commercial magnesium alloys
including aluminum has low corrosion resistance, resulting
subcutaneous gas bubbles and consequently the approach as
permanent bio-materials. Generally, Aluminum is known to pollution
substance, and it raises toxicity to nervous system. Therefore
especially Mg-35Zn-3Ca alloy is prepared for new biodegradable
materials in this study. And the pulsed power is used in
constant-current mode of DC power kinds of anodization. Based on
the aforementioned study, it examines corrosion resistance and
biocompatibility by effect of current and frequency variation. The
surface properties and thickness were compared using scanning
electronic microscopy. Corrosion resistance was assessed via
potentiodynamic polarization and the effect of oxide layer on the body
was assessed cell viability. Anodized Mg-35Zn-3Ca alloy has good
biocompatibility in vitro by current and frequency variation.
Abstract: The influence of axial magnetic field (B=0.48 T) on
the variation of ionization efficiency coefficient h and secondary
electron emission coefficient g with respect to reduced electric field
E/P is studied at a new range of plane-parallel electrode spacing (0<
d< 20 cm) and different nitrogen working pressure between 0.5-20
Pa. The axial magnetic field is produced from an inductive copper
coil of radius 5.6 cm. The experimental data of breakdown voltage is
adopted to estimate the mean Paschen curves at different working
features. The secondary electron emission coefficient is calculated
from the mean Paschen curve and used to determine the minimum
breakdown voltage. A reduction of discharge voltage of about 25% is
investigated by the applied of axial magnetic field. At high interelectrode
spacing, the effect of axial magnetic field becomes more
significant for the obtained values of h but it was less for the values
of g.
