Abstract: The behavior of model piles embedded in a very high expansive soil was investigated, a specially manufactured saturation-drying tank was used to apply three cycles of wetting and drying to the expansive soil surrounding the model straight shaft and under reamed piles, the relative movement of the piles with respect to the soil surface was recorded with time, also the exerted uplift pressure of the piles due to soil swelling was recorded. The behavior of unloaded straight shaft and under reamed piles was investigated. Two design charts were presented for straight shaft and under reamed piles one for the required pile depth for zero upward movement due to soil swelling, while the other for the required pile depth to exert zero uplift pressure when the soil swells. Under reamed piles showed a decrease in upward movement of 20% to 30%, and an uplift pressure decrease of 10% to 30%.
Abstract: Expansive soils swell when they absorb water and shrink when water evaporates from them. Hence, lightly loaded civil engineering structures founded in these soils are subjected to severe distress. Therefore, there is a need to ameliorate or improve these swelling soils through some innovative methods. This paper discusses chemical stabilisation of expansive soils, a technique in which chemical reagents such as lime and calcium chloride are added to expansive soils to reduce the volumetric changes occurring in expansive soils and to improve their engineering behaviour.
Abstract: The suitability of Newsprint and Kraft papers for the production of cement bonded ceiling board was investigated. Sample boards were produced from newsprint paper (100%), mixture of newsprint and Kraft paper (50:50) and Kraft paper (100%) at 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 cement/paper mixing ratio respectively with 3% additive concentration of calcium chloride (CaCl2). Density, flexural and thickness swelling properties of the boards were investigated. The effects of paper type and mixing ratio on the physical and mechanical properties were also examined. The bending properties of the board which include Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) increased linearly with increase in density. Modulus of rupture of boards increased as the density and mixing ratio increased. The thickness swelling property for the two paper types decreased as the board density and mixing ratio increased. Boards made from Kraft paper recorded higher strength values than the ones made from recycled newsprint paper while the mixture of kraft and newsprint papers had the best surface finish. The result of the study will help in managing the large quality of waste from paper converting/carton industry and that the ceiling boards produced could be installed with clout nails or used with suspended ceiling fittings.
Abstract: This paper produces a new approach for power quality analysis using a windowing technique based on Continuous S-transform (CST). This half-cycle window technique approach can detect almost correctly for initial detection of disturbances i.e. voltage sags, swells, and transients. Samples in half cycle window has been analyzed based continuous S-transform for entire disturbance waveform. The modified parameter has been produced by MATLAB programming m-file based on continuous s-transform. CST has better time frequency and localization property than traditional and also has ability to detect the disturbance under noisy condition correctly. The excellent time-frequency resolution characteristic of the CST makes it the most an attractive candidate for analysis of power system disturbances signals.
Abstract: This paper deals with use of pond ash and RBI Grade 81 for improvement in CBR values of clayey soil and grade-III materials used for base course of flexible pavement. The pond ash is a thermal power plant waste and RBI Grade 81 is chemical soil stabilizer. The geotechnical properties like Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), CBR value and Differential Free Swell (DFS) index of soil are tested in the laboratory for different mixes of soil, pond ash and RBI Grade 81 for different proportions. The mixes of grade-III material, pond ash and RBI Grade 81 tested for CBR test. From the study it is found that the geotechnical properties of clayey soil are improved significantly, if pond ash added with RBI Grade 81. The optimum mix recommended for subgrade is soil: pond ash: RBI Grade 81 in proportions of 76:20:4. The CBR value of grade-III base course treated with 20% pond ash and 4% RBI Grade 81 is increased by 125.93% as compared to untreated grade-III base course.
Abstract: There is long history of konjac tubers being used as a cure for certain diseases in China and Japan. Konjac flour is prepared from konjac tubers and it contains high concentration of glucomannan. Konjac Glucomannan (KGM) is dietary fiber and the role of which has been demonstrated in weight reduction, lowering blood cholesterol and sugar level, promoting intestinal activity etc. Konjac glucomanan has a property of swelling by absorbing water, more than a hundred times its own weight. Therefore it helps increasing weight of feces, water content of feces, and promotes satiety feeling. Mode of actions of dietary fibre as laxatives agents includes holding water inside the bowel lumen, inhibition of water absorption in the colon and stimulating colonic motility. Number of fecal pellets did not effected in rats were fed on 300 and 600 mg/kg of konjac flour, as well as constipated control and Dulcolax treatment. Water content, weight of fecal pellets and gastrointestinal transit ratio were higher in rats treated with 600 mg/kg than 300 mg/kg of konjac flour. Rats were administered with Dulcolax showed the highest gastrointestinal transit ratio, followed by 600 mg/kg konjac flour. The lowest feed consumption was noted in 600 mg/kg konjac flour diet group.
Abstract: Modern industrial processes are based on a large amount of electronic devices such as programmable logic controllers and adjustable speed drives. Unfortunately, electronic devices are sensitive to disturbances, and thus, industrial loads become less tolerant to power quality problems such as sags, swells, and harmonics. Voltage sags are an important power quality problem. In this paper proposed a new configuration of Static Var Compensator (SVC) considering three different conditions named as topologies and Booster transformer with fuzzy logic based controller, capable of compensating for power quality problems associated with voltage sags and maintaining a prescribed level of voltage profile. Fuzzy logic controller is designed to achieve the firing angles for SVC such that it maintains voltage profile. The online monitoring system for voltage sag mitigation in the laboratory using the hardware is used. The results are presented from the performance of each topology and Booster transformer considered in this paper.
Abstract: Chitosan is a derivative of chitin, a compound usually
isolated from the shells of some crustaceans such as crab, lobster and
shrimp. It has biocompatible, biodegradable, and antimicrobial
properties. To use these properties of chitosan in biomedical fields,
chitosan films (1%, 2%, 3% and 4%) were prepared by using l%
lactic acid as solvent. The effects of chitosan films on tensile
strength, elongation at break, degree of swelling, thickness,
morphology, allergic and irritation reactions and antibacterial
property were evaluated. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli
were used as tested microorganisms. In vivo wound healing activities
of chitosan films were investigated using mice model. As results,
Chitosan films have similar appearance and good swelling properties
and 4% chitosan film showed the better swelling activity and the
greatest elongation ratio than the other chitosan films. They also
showed their good activity of wound healing in mice model.
Moreover, the results showed that the films did not produce any
unwilling symptoms (allergy or irritation). In conclusion, it is evident
that the chitosan film has the potentiality to use as wound healing
biofilms in the biomedical fields.
Abstract: Preparation of hydrogel based on carrageenan
extracted from Kappaphycus alvarezii was conducted with film
immersion in glutaraldehyde solution (GA 4%w/w) for 2min and
then followed by thermal curing at 110°C for 25min. The method of
carrageenan recovery strongly determines the properties of
crosslinked carrageenan. Hydrogel obtained from alkali treated
carrageenan showed higher swelling ability compared to hydrogel
from nonalkali treated carrageenan. Hydrogel from alkali treated
showed the ability of sensitive to pH media.

Abstract: The significance of psychology in studying politics
is embedded in philosophical issues as well as behavioural
pursuits. For the former is often associated with Sigmund Freud
and his followers. The latter is inspired by the writings of Harold
Lasswell. Political psychology or psychopolitics has its own
impression on political thought ever since it deciphers the concept
of human nature and political propaganda. More importantly,
psychoanalysis views political thought as a textual content which
needs to explore the latent from the manifest content. In other
words, it reads the text symptomatically and interprets the hidden
truth. This paper explains the paradigm of dream interpretation
applied by Freud. The dream work is a process which has four
successive activities: condensation, displacement, representation
and secondary revision. The texts dealing with political though can
also be interpreted on these principles. Freud's method of dream
interpretation draws its source after the hermeneutic model of
philological research. It provides theoretical perspective and
technical rules for the interpretation of symbolic structures. The
task of interpretation remains a discovery of equivalence of
symbols and actions through perpetual analogies. Psychoanalysis
can help in studying political thought in two ways: to study the text
distortion, Freud's dream interpretation is used as a paradigm
exploring the latent text from its manifest text; and to apply Freud's
psychoanalytic concepts and theories ranging from individual mind
to civilization, religion, war and politics.
Abstract: the effects of refining and alkaline chemicals on potential of recycling bleached chemical pulp of bagasse were investigated in this study. Recycling was done until three times. Handsheet properties such as, apparent density, light scattering coefficient, tear index, burst index, breaking length, and fold number according to TAPPI standard were measured. Water retention value also was used to considering the treatments during recycling. Refining enhanced the strength of recycled pulp by increasing fiber flexibility and swelling ability, whereas by applying chemical treatment didn't observe any improvement. The morphology of recycled fiber was considered with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Abstract: The simulation of extrusion process is studied widely
in order to both increase products and improve quality, with broad
application in wire coating. The annular tube-tooling extrusion was
set up by a model that is termed as Navier-Stokes equation in
addition to a rheological model of differential form based on singlemode
exponential Phan-Thien/Tanner constitutive equation in a twodimensional
cylindrical coordinate system for predicting the
contraction point of the polymer melt beyond the die. Numerical
solutions are sought through semi-implicit Taylor-Galerkin pressurecorrection
finite element scheme. The investigation was focused on
incompressible creeping flow with long relaxation time in terms of
Weissenberg numbers up to 200. The isothermal case was considered
with surface tension effect on free surface in extrudate flow and no
slip at die wall. The Stream Line Upwind Petrov-Galerkin has been
proposed to stabilize solution. The structure of mesh after die exit
was adjusted following prediction of both top and bottom free
surfaces so as to keep the location of contraction point around one
unit length which is close to experimental results. The simulation of

Abstract: In this article, we synthesize a novel chitosan -based
superabsorbent hydrogel via graft copolymerization of mixtures
acrylic acid (AA) and N-vinyl pyrollidon onto chitosan backbones.
The polymerization reaction was carried out in an aqueous medium
and in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and
N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker.The hydrogel
structures were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The swelling
behavior of these absorbent polymers was also investigated in
various salt solutions. Results indicated that the swelling capacity
decreased with an increase in the ionic strength of the swelling
medium. Furthermore, the swelling of superabsorbing hydrogels was
examined in solutions with pH values ranging between 1.0 and 13.0.
It showed a reversible pH-responsive behavior at pHs 2.0 and 8.0.
This on-off switching behavior makes the synthesized hydrogels as
an excellent candidate for controlled delivery of bioactive agents.
Abstract: This study investigated the effect of germination on chemical compositions, physio-chemical properties of malted (germinated) red sorghum flours and evaluated characteristics of gluten free breads from sorghum flour. Results showed that germinated sorghum flour had higher amylase activity, swelling power and solubility at 95°C, but lower in the peak, break down, final and set back viscosities than ungerminated sample (p≤0.05). Five gluten free breads made from sorghum flour blends, with different ratios of ungerminated and germinated sorghum flour, were compared for the physical properties with those made from wheat flour. Crumb hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness of sorghum breads were found significantly higher than those of wheat bread. With increasing of ungerminated flour proportion, the bread hardness increased while the cohesiveness declined. Sorghum breads appeared red to human eyes with a*values of 10.41-15.77.Their crust and crumb colors differed significantly from those of wheat bread.
Abstract: This paper proposes fractal patterns for power quality
(PQ) detection using color relational analysis (CRA) based classifier.
Iterated function system (IFS) uses the non-linear interpolation in the
map and uses similarity maps to construct various fractal patterns of
power quality disturbances, including harmonics, voltage sag, voltage
swell, voltage sag involving harmonics, voltage swell involving
harmonics, and voltage interruption. The non-linear interpolation
functions (NIFs) with fractal dimension (FD) make fractal patterns
more distinguishing between normal and abnormal voltage signals.
The classifier based on CRA discriminates the disturbance events in a
power system. Compared with the wavelet neural networks, the test
results will show accurate discrimination, good robustness, and faster
processing time for detecting disturbing events.
Abstract: This study examines the design and construction of AC Electronics load surge protection in order to carry electric surge load arisen from faults in low voltage electricity system (single phase/220V) by using the principle of electronics load clamping voltage during induction period so that electric voltage could go through to safe load and continue to work. The qualification of the designed device could prevent both transient over voltage and voltage swell. Both will work in cooperation, resulting in the ability to improve and modify the quality of electrical power in Thailand electricity distribution system more effective than the past and help increase the lifetime of electric appliances, electric devices, and electricity protection equipments.
Abstract: Desert regions around the Nile valley in Upper Egypt
contain great extent of swelling soil. Many different comment
procedures of treatment of the swelling soils for construction such as
pre-swelling, load balance OR soil replacement. One of the measure
factors which affect the level of the aggressiveness of the swelling
soil is the direction of the infiltration water directions within the
swelling soils. In this paper a physical model was installed to
measure the effect of water on the swelling soil with replacement
using fatty acid distillation residuals (FADR) mixed with sand as
thick sand-FADR mixture to prevent the water pathway arrive to the
swelling soil. Testing program have been conducted on different
artificial samples with different sand to FADR contents ratios (4%,
6%, and 9%) to get the optimum value fulfilling the impermeable
replacement. The tests show that a FADR content of 9% is sufficient
to produce impermeable replacement.
Abstract: Chitosan is an attractive polysaccharide obtained by
deacetylation of an abundant natural biopolymer called chitin. Chitin
and chitosan are excellent materials. To improve the potential of
chitin and chitosan modification is needed. In the present study,
grafting of maleic acid on to chitosan by cerium ammonium nitrate in
acetic acid solution was investigated with use of a microwave and
reflux system. The grafted chitosan was characterized by using a
Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry. The solubility and swelling
behavior of grafted chitosans were determined in acetate buffer (pH
3.6), citrophosphate buffer (pH 5.6 and pH 7.0), and boric buffer (pH
9.2) solutions. The sample obtained by microwave system with use of
a chitosan/maleic anhydride/ceric ammonium nitrate 0.2/3.922/0.99
gram of raw material within 30 minute showed the maximum
swelling ratio (13.6) in boric buffer solution.
Abstract: This research was to evaluate a technical feasibility of
making single-layer experimental particleboard panels from bamboo
waste (Dendrocalamus asper Backer) by converting bamboo into
strips, which are used to make laminated bamboo furniture. Variable
factors were density (600, 700 and 800 kg/m3) and temperature of
condition (25, 40 and 55 °C). The experimental panels were tested for
their physical and mechanical properties including modulus of
elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bonding
strength (IB), screw holding strength (SH) and thickness swelling
values according to the procedures defined by Japanese Industrial
Standard (JIS). The test result of mechanical properties showed that
the MOR, MOE and IB values were not in the set criteria, except the
MOR values at the density of 700 kg/m3 at 25 °C and at the density
of 800 kg/m3 at 25 and 40 °C, the IB values at the density of 600
kg/m3, at 40 °C, and at the density of 800 kg/m3 at 55 °C. The SH
values had the test result according to the set standard, except with
the density of 600 kg/m3, at 40 and 55 °C. Conclusively, a valuable
renewable biomass, bamboo waste could be used to manufacture
boards.
