Abstract: Coatings based on polyaniline (PANI) can improve the resistance of steel against corrosion. In this work, the preparation of stable suspensions of colloidal PANI-SiO2 particles, suitable for obtaining of composite anticorrosive coating on steel, is described. Electrokinetic data as a function of pH are presented, showing that the zeta potentials of the PANI-SiO2 particles are governed primarily by the charged groups at the silica oxide surface. Electrosteric stabilization of the PANI-SiO2 particles’ suspension against aggregation is realized at pH>5.5 (EB form of PANI) by adsorption of positively charged polyelectrolyte molecules onto negatively charged PANI-SiO2 particles. The PANI-SiO2 particles are incorporated by electrodeposition into the metal matrix of zinc in order to obtain composite (hybrid) coatings. The latter are aimed to ensure sacrificial protection of steel mainly in aggressive media leading to local corrosion damages. The surface morphology of the composite zinc coatings is investigated with SEM. The influence of PANI-SiO2 particles on the cathodic and anodic processes occurring in the starting electrolyte for obtaining of the coatings is followed with cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical and corrosion behavior is evaluated with potentiodynamic polarization curves and polarization resistance measurements. The beneficial effect of the stabilized PANI-SiO2 particles for the increased protective ability of the composites is commented and discussed.
Abstract: Migration of a core-shell soft particle under the
influence of an external electric field in an electrolyte solution is
studied numerically. The soft particle is coated with a positively
charged polyelectrolyte layer (PEL) and the rigid core is having
a uniform surface charge density. The Darcy-Brinkman extended
Navier-Stokes equations are solved for the motion of the ionized
fluid, the non-linear Nernst-Planck equations for the ion transport and
the Poisson equation for the electric potential. A pressure correction
based iterative algorithm is adopted for numerical computations. The
effects of convection on double layer polarization (DLP) and diffusion
dominated counter ions penetration are investigated for a wide range
of Debye layer thickness, PEL fixed surface charge density, and
permeability of the PEL. Our results show that when the Debye
layer is in order of the particle size, the DLP effect is significant
and produces a reduction in electrophoretic mobility. However, the
double layer polarization effect is negligible for a thin Debye layer
or low permeable cases. The point of zero mobility and the existence
of mobility reversal depending on the electrolyte concentration are
also presented.
Abstract: Despite of few research works on municipal sludge, still there is a lack of actual data. Thus, this work was focused on the conditioning and rheology of fresh activated sludge. The effect of cationic polyelectrolyte has been investigated at different concentrations and pH values in a comparative fashion. Yield stress is presented in all results indicating the minimum stress that necessary to reach flow conditions. Connections between particle-particle is the reason for this yield stress, also, the addition of polyelectrolyte causes strong bonds between particles and water resulting in the aggregation of particles which required higher shear stress in order to flow. The results from the experiments indicate that the cationic polyelectrolytes have significant effluence on the sludge characteristic and water quality such as turbidity, SVI, zone settling rate and shear stress.
Abstract: The surface properties of many materials can be readily and predictably modified by the controlled deposition of thin layers containing appropriate functional groups and this research area is now a subject of widespread interest. The layer-by-layer (lbl) method involves depositing oppositely charged layers of polyelectrolytes onto the substrate material which are stabilized due to strong electrostatic forces between adjacent layers. This type of modification affords products that combine the properties of the original material with the superficial parameters of the new external layers. Through an appropriate selection of the deposited layers, the surface properties can be precisely controlled and readily adjusted in order to meet the requirements of the intended application. In the presented paper a variety of anionic (poly(acrylic acid)) and cationic (linear poly(ethylene imine), polymers were successfully deposited onto the polypropylene nonwoven using the lbl technique. The chemical structure of the surface before and after modification was confirmed by reflectance FTIR spectroscopy, volumetric analysis and selective dyeing tests. As a direct result of this work, new materials with greatly improved properties have been produced. For example, following a modification process significant changes in the electrostatic activity of a range of novel nanocomposite materials were observed. The deposition of polyelectrolyte nanolayers was found to strongly accelerate the loss of electrostatically generated charges and to increase considerably the thermal resistance properties of the modified fabric (the difference in T50% is over 20oC). From our results, a clear relationship between the type of polyelectrolyte layer deposited onto the flat fabric surface and the properties of the modified fabric was identified.
Abstract: The effect of polyelectrolytes; cationic and anionic charges and coagulants have been investigated for fresh activated sludge at different concentrations and pH values in a comparative fashion. The results from the experiments indicate that the cationic polyelectrolytes have a significant effluence on the sludge characteristic, degree of flocculation and water quality such as turbidity and SVI. The results show that the cationic CPAM-80 is the most effective polyelectrolyte used corresponding to turbidity and SVI despite of the variations in feed properties of the fresh activated sludge.
Abstract: The objective of the present investigation was to
evaluate the morphology of Escherchia coli bacteria in interaction
with SiO2 nanoparticles.
This study was made by atomic force microscopy and quartz
crystal microbalance using SiO2 nanoparticles with 10nm, 50nm and
100nm diameter and bacteria immobilized on polyelectrolyte
multilayer films obtained by spin coating or by “layer by layer”
(LbL) method.
Abstract: We present a dextran modified silicon microring
resonator sensor for high density antibody immobilization. An array
of sensors consisting of three sensor rings and a reference ring was
fabricated and its surface sensitivity and the limit of detection were
obtained using polyelectrolyte multilayers. The mass sensitivity and
the limit of detection of the fabricated sensor ring are 0.35 nm/ng
mm-2 and 42.8 pg/mm2 in air, respectively. Dextran modified sensor
surface was successfully prepared by covalent grafting of oxidized
dextran on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) modified silicon
sensor surface. The antibody immobilization on hydrogel dextran
matrix improves 40% compared to traditional antibody
immobilization method via APTES and glutaraldehyde linkage.
