Abstract: Ibeno, Nigeria hosts the operational base of Mobil
Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU), a subsidiary of ExxonMobil
and the current highest oil & condensate producer in Nigeria. Besides
MPNU, other oil companies operate onshore, on the continental shelf
and deep offshore of the Atlantic Ocean in Ibeno, Nigeria. This study
was designed to delineate oil polluted sites in Ibeno, Nigeria using
geophysical methods of electrical resistivity (ER) and ground
penetrating radar (GPR). Results obtained revealed that there have
been hydrocarbon contaminations of this environment by past crude
oil spills as observed from high resistivity values and GPR profiles
which clearly show the distribution, thickness and lateral extent of
hydrocarbon contamination as represented on the radargram reflector
tones. Contaminations were of varying degrees, ranging from slight
to high, indicating levels of substantial attenuation of crude oil
contamination over time. Moreover, the display of relatively lower
resistivities of locations outside the impacted areas compared to
resistivity values within the impacted areas and the 3-D Cartesian
images of oil contaminant plume depicted by red, light brown and
magenta for high, low and very low oil impacted areas, respectively
confirmed significant recent pollution of the study area with crude
oil.
Abstract: The present study was performed in Musa bay (northern part of the Persian Gulf) around the coastal area of Bandare-Imam Khomeini and Razi Petrochemical Companies. Sediment samples and effluent samples were collected from the selected stations, from June 2009 to June 2010. The samples were analyzed to determine the degree of hydrocarbon contamination. The average level of TPH concentration in the study area was more than the natural background value at all of the stations, especially at station BI1 which was the main effluent outlet of Bandar-e- Imam Khomeini petrochemical company. Also the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbon was monitored in the effluents of aforementioned petrochemical companies and the results showed that the concentration of TPH in the effluents of Bandar-e- Imam Khomeini petrochemical company was greater than Razi petrochemical company which is may be related to the products of Bandar-e- Imam Khomeini petrochemical company (aromatics, polymers, chemicals, fuel).
Abstract: Environmental contamination is a common problem in ex-industrial and industrial sites. This article gives a brief description of general applied environmental investigation methodologies and possible remediation applications in Latvia. Most of contaminated areas are situated in former and active industrial, military areas and ports. Industrial and logistic activities very often have been with great impact for more than hundred years thus the contamination level with heavy metals, hydrocarbons, pesticides, persistent organic pollutants is high and is threatening health and environment in general. 242 territories now are numbered as contaminated and fixed in the National Register of contaminated territories in Latvia. Research and remediation of contamination in densely populated areas are of important environmental policy domain. Four different investigation case studies of contaminated areas are given describing the history of use, environmental quality assessment as well as planned environmental management actions. All four case study locations are situated in Riga - the capital of the Republic of Latvia. The aim of this paper is to analyze the situation and problems with management of contaminated areas in Latvia, give description of field research methods and recommendations for remediation industry based on scientific data and innovations.
