Abstract: Roller-compacted concrete pavement (RCCP), an environmental friendly pavement of which load carry capacity benefitted from both hydration and aggregate interlock from roller compacting, demonstrated a superb structural performance for a relatively small amount of water and cement content. Even though an excellent structural performance can be secured, it is required to investigate roller-compacted concrete (RCC) under environmental loading and its long-term durability under critical conditions. In order to secure long-term durability, an appropriate internal air-void structure is required for this concrete. In this study, a method for improving the long-term durability of RCCP is suggested by analyzing the internal air-void structure and corresponding durability of RCC. The method of improving the long-term durability involves measurements of air content, air voids, and air-spacing factors in RCC that experiences changes in terms of type of air-entraining agent and its usage amount. This test is conducted according to the testing criteria in ASTM C 457, 672, and KS F 2456. It was found that the freezing-thawing and scaling resistances of RCC without any chemical admixture was quite low. Interestingly, an improvement of freezing-thawing and scaling resistances was observed for RCC with appropriate the air entraining (AE) agent content; Relative dynamic elastic modulus was found to be more than 80% for those mixtures. In RCC with AE agent mixtures, large amount of air was distributed within a range of 2% to 3%, and an air void spacing factor ranging between 200 and 300 μm (close to 250 μm, recommended by PCA) was secured. The long-term durability of RCC has a direct relationship with air-void spacing factor, and thus it can only be secured by ensuring the air void spacing factor through the inclusion of the AE in the mixture.
Abstract: Freeze-thaw cycles are one of the greatest threats to concrete durability. Lately, protection against this threat excites scientists’ attention. Air-entraining admixtures have been widely used to produce freeze-thaw resistant at concretes. The use of air-entraining agents (AEAs) enhances not only freeze-thaw endurance but also the properties of fresh concrete such as segregation, bleeding and flow ability. This paper examines the effects of air-entraining on compressive strength of concrete. Air-entraining is used between 0.05% and 0.4% by weight of cement. One control and four fiber reinforced concrete mixes are prepared and three specimens are tested for each mix. It is concluded from the test results that when air entraining is increased the compressive strength of concrete reduces for all mixes with AEAs.
Abstract: This paper presents results of compressive strength,
capillary water absorption, and density tests conducted on concrete
containing recycled aggregate (RCA) which is obtained from
structural waste generated by the construction industry in Turkey. In
the experiments, 0%, 15%, 30%, 45% and 60% of the normal
(natural) coarse aggregate was replaced by the recycled aggregate.
Maximum aggregate particle sizes were selected as 16 mm, 22,4 mm
and 31,5 mm; and 0,06%, 0,13% and 0,20% of air-entraining agent
(AEA) were used in mixtures. Fly ash and superplasticizer were used
as a mineral and chemical admixture, respectively. The same type
(CEM I 42.5) and constant dosage of cement were used in the study.
Water/cement ratio was kept constant as 0.53 for all mixture. It was
concluded that capillary water absorption, compressive strength, and
density of concrete decreased with increasing RCA ratio. Increasing
in maximum aggregate particle size and amount of AEA also affect
the properties of concrete significantly.
Abstract: In this paper, the effect of admixtures on the tensional
strength of concrete in Urmia-lake water have been investigated. We
made different types of concretes with the ratio of w/c and replaced
different percentages of micro-silica, air-entraining, super plasticizer,
corrosion-inhibiting, and caulk with two types of cement I and II as
well as investigating in both ordinary water and Urmia-lake water.
The tensional strength was investigated on these samples.
Abstract: In the modern construction practices, industrial wastes
or by-products are largely used as raw materials in cement and
concrete. These impart many benefits to the environment and bringabout
an economic impact because the cost of waste disposal is
constantly increasing due to strict environmental regulations. It was
reported in literature that the leakage of oil onto concrete element in
older cement grinding unit resulted in concrete with greater resistance
to freezing and thawing. This effect was thought to be similar to
adding an air-entraining chemical admixture to concrete. This paper
presents an investigation on the load deflection behaviour and crack
patterns of reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to four point
loading. Ten 120x260x1900 mm beams were cast with 100%
ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete, 20% fly ash (FA) and 20%
rice husk ash (RHA) blended cement concrete. 0.15% dosage of
admixtures (used engine oil, new engine oil, and superplasticizer)
was used throughout the experiment. Results show that OPC and
OPC/RHA RC beams containing used engine oil and superplasticizer
exhibit higher capacity, 18-26% than their corresponding control
mix.
