Abstract: In the present paper; an experimental and numerical
investigations of drag reduction on a grooved circular cylinder have
been performed. The experiments were carried out in closed circuit
subsonic wind tunnel (TE44); the pressure distribution on the
cylinder was conducted using a TE44DPS differential pressure
scanner and the drag forces were measured using the TE81 balance.
The display unit is linked to a computer, loaded with DATASLIM
software for data analysis and logging of result. The numerical study
was performed using the code ANSYS FLUENT solving the
Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The k-ε and k-
ω SST models were tested. The results obtained from the
experimental and numerical investigations have showed a reduction
in the drag when using longitudinal grooves namely 2 and 6 on the
cylinder.
Abstract: The aim of study was to evaluate pressure distribution characteristics of the elastic textile bandages using two instrumental techniques: a prototype Instrument and a load Transference. The prototype instrument which simulates shape of real leg has pressure sensors which measure bandage pressure. Using this instrument, the results show that elastic textile bandages presents different pressure distribution characteristics and none produces a uniform distribution around lower limb.
The load transference test procedure is used to determine whether a relationship exists between elastic textile bandage structure and pressure distribution characteristics. The test procedure assesses degree of load, directly transferred through a textile when loads series are applied to bandaging surface. A range of weave fabrics was produced using needle weaving machine and a sewing technique. A textile bandage was developed with optimal characteristics far superior pressure distribution than other bandages. From results, we find that theoretical pressure is not consistent exactly with practical pressure. It is important in this study to make a practical application for specialized nurses in order to verify the results and draw useful conclusions for predicting the use of this type of elastic band.
Abstract: A CFD software was employed to analyze the
characteristics of the flat round porous aerostatic bearings. The effects
of gap between the bearing and the guide way and the porosity of the
porous material on the load capacity of the bearing were studied. The
adequacy of the simulation model and the approach was verified. From
the parametric study, it is found that the depth of the flow path does not
influence the load capacity of the bearing; the load capacity of the
bearing will decrease if the thickness of the porous material increases
or the porous material protrudes above the bearing housing; the
variation of the chamfer at the edge of the bearing does not affect the
bearing load capacity. For a bearing with an air gap of 5μm and a
porosity of 0.1, the average load capacity and the pressure distribution
of the bearing are nearly unchanged no matter the bearing moves at a
constant or a varying speed.
Abstract: A CFD study on heat flux reduction in hypersonic flow with opposing jet has been conducted. Flowfield parameters, reattachment point position, surface pressure distributions and heat flux distributions are obtained and validated with experiments. The physical mechanism of heat reduction has been analyzed. When the opposing jet blows, the freestream is blocked off, flows to the edges and not interacts with the surface to form aerodynamic heating. At the same time, the jet flows back to form cool recirculation region, which reduces the difference in temperature between the surface and the nearby gas, and then reduces the heat flux. As the pressure ratio increases, the interface between jet and freestream is gradually pushed away from the surface. Larger the total pressure ratio is, lower the heat flux is. To study the effect of the intensity of opposing jet more reasonably, a new parameter RPA has been introduced by combining the flux and the total pressure ratio. The study shows that the same shock wave position and total heat load can be obtained with the same RPA with different fluxes and the total pressures, which means the new parameter could stand for the intensity of opposing jet and could be used to analyze the influence of opposing jet on flow field and aerodynamic heating.
Abstract: A series of experiments were carried out to study
unsteady behavior of the flow field as well as the boundary layer of
an airfoil oscillating in plunging motion in a subsonic wind tunnel.
The measurements involved surface pressure distribution
complimented with surface-mounted hot-films. The effect of leadingedge
roughness that simulates surface irregularities on the wind
turbine blades was also studied on variations of aerodynamic loads
and boundary layer behavior.
Abstract: This research details a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach to model fluid flow in a journal bearing with 8 equispaced semi-circular axial grooves. Water is used as the lubricant and is fed from one end of the bearing to the other, under pressure. The geometry of the bearing is modeled using a commercially available modeling software GAMBIT and the flow analysis is performed using a dedicated CFD analysis software FLUENT. The pressure distribution in the bearing clearance is obtained from FLUENT for various whirl ratios and is used to calculate the hydrodynamic force components in the radial and tangential direction of the bearing. These values along with the various whirl speeds can be used to do a regression analysis to determine the stiffness and damping coefficients. The values obtained are then compared with the stiffness and damping coefficients of a 3 Axial groove water lubricated journal bearing and those obtained from a FORTRAN code for a similar bearing.
Abstract: Feeder is one of the airships of the Multibody Advanced Airship for Transport (MAAT) system, under development within the EU FP7 project. MAAT is based on a modular concept composed of two different parts that have the possibility to join; respectively they are the so-called Cruiser and Feeder, designed on the lighter than air principle. Feeder, also named ATEN (Airship Transport Elevator Network), is the smaller one which joins the bigger one, Cruiser, also named PTAH (Photovoltaic modular Transport Airship for High altitude),envisaged to happen at 15km altitude. During the MAAT design phase, the aerodynamic studies of the both airships and their interactions are analyzed. The objective of these studies is to understand the aerodynamic behavior of all the preselected configurations, as an important element in the overall MAAT system design. The most of these configurations are only simulated by CFD, while the most feasible one is experimentally analyzed in order to validate and thrust the CFD predictions. This paper presents the numerical and experimental investigation of the Feeder “conical like" shape configuration. The experiments are focused on the aerodynamic force coefficients and the pressure distribution over the Feeder outer surface, while the numerical simulation cover also the analysis of the velocity and pressure distribution. Finally, the wind tunnel experiment is compared with its CFD model in order to validate such specific simulations with respective experiments and to better understand the difference between the wind tunnel and in-flight circumstances.
Abstract: The present work deals with analyses of the effects
of bearing curvature and non-Newtonian characteristics on the load capacity of an exponential rectangular squeeze film bearing using
Bingham fluids as lubricants. Bingham fluids are characterized by an
yield value and hence the formation of a “rigid" core in the region
between the plates is justified. The flow is confined to the region
between the core and the plates. The shape of the core has been
identified through numerical means. Further, numerical solutions for
the pressure distribution and load carrying capacity of the bearing
for various values of Bingham number and curvature parameter have
been obtained. The effects of bearing curvature and non-Newtonian
characteristics of the lubricant on the bearing performances have been
discussed.
Abstract: This paper presents a new approach for image
segmentation by applying Pillar-Kmeans algorithm. This
segmentation process includes a new mechanism for clustering the
elements of high-resolution images in order to improve precision and
reduce computation time. The system applies K-means clustering to
the image segmentation after optimized by Pillar Algorithm. The
Pillar algorithm considers the pillars- placement which should be
located as far as possible from each other to withstand against the
pressure distribution of a roof, as identical to the number of centroids
amongst the data distribution. This algorithm is able to optimize the
K-means clustering for image segmentation in aspects of precision
and computation time. It designates the initial centroids- positions
by calculating the accumulated distance metric between each data
point and all previous centroids, and then selects data points which
have the maximum distance as new initial centroids. This algorithm
distributes all initial centroids according to the maximum
accumulated distance metric. This paper evaluates the proposed
approach for image segmentation by comparing with K-means and
Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm and involving RGB, HSV, HSL
and CIELAB color spaces. The experimental results clarify the
effectiveness of our approach to improve the segmentation quality in
aspects of precision and computational time.
Abstract: Phase-Contrast MR imaging methods are widely used
for measurement of blood flow velocity components. Also there are
some other tools such as CT and Ultrasound for velocity map
detection in intravascular studies. These data are used in deriving
flow characteristics. Some clinical applications are investigated
which use pressure distribution in diagnosis of intravascular disorders
such as vascular stenosis. In this paper an approach to the problem of
measurement of intravascular pressure field by using velocity field
obtained from flow images is proposed. The method presented in this
paper uses an algorithm to calculate nonlinear equations of Navier-
Stokes, assuming blood as an incompressible and Newtonian fluid.
Flow images usually suffer the lack of spatial resolution. Our
attempt is to consider the effect of spatial resolution on the pressure
distribution estimated from this method. In order to achieve this aim,
velocity map of a numerical phantom is derived at six different
spatial resolutions. To determine the effects of vascular stenoses on
pressure distribution, a stenotic phantom geometry is considered. A
comparison between the pressure distribution obtained from the
phantom and the pressure resulted from the algorithm is presented. In
this regard we also compared the effects of collocated and staggered
computational grids on the pressure distribution resulted from this
algorithm.
