Abstract: Antioxidant-rich extracts were prepared from pomegranate peels, seeds and juice using methanol and ethanol and their antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine (DPPH) radical scavenging and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) method. Both analytical methods indicated a higher antioxidant activity in extracts prepared from peels, which was comparable to that of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Furthermore, the antioxidant activity was correlated to the phenolic and flavonoid content of the various extracts. The antioxidant effectiveness of the extracts was also assessed using corn oil as the oxidation substrate. More specifically, preheated corn oil samples stabilized with extracts at a concentration of 250 ppm, 500 ppm or 1,000 ppm were subjected to accelerated aging (100 oC, 10 days) and the extent of oxidative alteration was followed by the measurement of the peroxide, conjugated dienes and trienes, as well as p-aniside value. BHT at its legal limit (200 ppm) served as standard besides the control sample. Results from the different parameters were in agreement with each other suggesting that pomegranate extracts can stabilize corn oil effectively under accelerated conditions, at all concentrations tested. However, the magnitude of oil stabilization depended strongly on the amount of extract added and this was positively correlated with their phenolic content. Pomegranate peel extracts, which exhibited the highest not only phenolic and flavonoid content but also antioxidant activity, were more potent in inhibiting oxidative deterioration. Both methanolic and ethanolic peel extracts at a concentration of 500 ppm exerted a stabilizing effect comparable to that of BHT, while at a concentration of 1000 ppm they exhibited higher stabilization efficiency in comparison to BHT. Finally, heating oil samples resulted in a time dependent decrease in their antioxidant capacity. Samples containing peel extracts appeared to retain their antioxidant capacity for a longer period, indicating that these extracts contained active compounds that offered superior antioxidant protection to corn oil.
Abstract: In this study, nickel aluminide coatings were deposited onto CMSX-4 single crystal superalloy and pure Ni substrates by using in-situ chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technique. The microstructural evolutions and coating thickness (CT) were studied upon the variation of processing conditions i.e. time and temperature. The results demonstrated (under identical conditions) that coating formed on pure Ni contains no substrate entrapments and have lower CT in comparison to one deposited on the CMSX-4 counterpart. In addition, the interdiffusion zone (IDZ) of Ni substrate is a γ’-Ni3Al in comparison to the CMSX-4 alloy that is βNiAl phase. The higher CT on CMSX-4 superalloy is attributed to presence of γ-Ni/γ’-Ni3Al structure which contains ~ 15 at.% Al before deposition (that is already present in superalloy). Two main deposition parameters (time and temperature) of the coatings were also studied in addition to standard comparison of substrate effects. The coating formation time was found to exhibit profound effect on CT, whilst temperature was found to change coating activities. In addition, the CT showed linear trend from 800 to 1000 °C, thereafter reduction was observed. This was attributed to the change in coating activities.
Abstract: The aim of this work is to present a low cost adsorbent
for removing toxic heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Therefore,
we are interested to investigate the efficiency of natural clay minerals
collected from south Tunisia and their modified form using sulfuric
acid in the removal of toxic metal ions: Zn(II) and Pb(II) from
synthetic waste water solutions. The obtained results indicate that
metal uptake is pH-dependent and maximum removal was detected to
occur at pH 6. Adsorption equilibrium is very rapid and it was
achieved after 90 min for both metal ions studied. The kinetics results
show that the pseudo-second-order model describes the adsorption
and the intraparticle diffusion models are the limiting step. The
treatment of natural clay with sulfuric acid creates more active sites
and increases the surface area, so it showed an increase of the
adsorbed quantities of lead and zinc in single and binary systems. The
competitive adsorption study showed that the uptake of lead was
inhibited in the presence of 10 mg/L of zinc. An antagonistic binary
adsorption mechanism was observed. These results revealed that clay
is an effective natural material for removing lead and zinc in single
and binary systems from aqueous solution.
Abstract: The paper describes the modeling and simulation of the heat pumps domain processes. The main objective of the study is the use of the heat pump in propene–propane distillation processes. The modeling and simulation instrument is the Unisim® Design simulator. The paper is structured in three parts: An overview of the compressing gases, the modeling and simulation of the freezing systems, and the modeling and simulation of the heat pumps. For each of these systems, there are presented the Unisim® Design simulation diagrams, the input–output system structure and the numerical results. Future studies will consider modeling and simulation of the propene–propane distillation process with heat pump.
Abstract: This research presents the main ideas to implement an
intelligent system composed by communicating wireless sensors
measuring environmental data linked to drought indicators (such as
air temperature, soil moisture , etc...). On the other hand, the setting
up of a spatio temporal database communicating with a Web mapping
application for a monitoring in real time in activity 24:00 /day, 7
days/week is proposed to allow the screening of the drought
parameters time evolution and their extraction. Thus this system
helps detecting surfaces touched by the phenomenon of drought.
Spatio-temporal conceptual models seek to answer the users who
need to manage soil water content for irrigating or fertilizing or other
activities pursuing crop yield augmentation. Effectively, spatiotemporal
conceptual models enable users to obtain a diagram of
readable and easy data to apprehend. Based on socio-economic
information, it helps identifying people impacted by the phenomena
with the corresponding severity especially that this information is
accessible by farmers and stakeholders themselves. The study will be
applied in Siliana watershed Northern Tunisia.
Abstract: The purpose of the study was to find out the effects of
Aquatic and Land plyometric training on selected physical variables
in intercollegiate male handball players. To achieve this purpose of
the study, forty five handball players of Sardar Vallabhbhai National
Institute of Technology, Surat, Gujarat were selected as players at
random and their age ranged between 18 to 21 years. The selected
players were divided into three equal groups of fifteen players each.
Group I underwent Aquatic plyometric training, Group II underwent
Land plyometric training and Group III Control group for three days
per week for twelve weeks. Control Group did not participate in any
special training programme apart from their regular activities as per
their curriculum. The following physical fitness variables namely
speed; leg explosive power and agility were selected as dependent
variables. All the players of three groups were tested on selected
dependent variables prior to and immediately after the training
programme. The analysis of covariance was used to analyze the
significant difference, if any among the groups. Since, three groups
were compared, whenever the obtained ‘F’ ratio for adjusted posttest
was found to be significant, the Scheffe’s test to find out the paired
mean differences, if any. The 0.05 level of confidence was fixed as
the level of significance to test the ‘F’ ratio obtained by the analysis
of covariance, which was considered as an appropriate. The result of
the study indicates due to Aquatic and Land plyometric training on
speed, explosive power, and agility has been improved significantly.
Abstract: In this work, two fermentations at different
temperatures (25 and 30ºC), with cell recycling, were accomplished
to produce ethanol, using a mix of commercial substrates, xylose
(70%) and glucose (30%), as organic source for Scheffersomyces
stipitis. Five consecutive fermentations of 80 g L-1 (1º, 2º and 3º
recycles), 96 g L-1 (4º recycle) and 120 g L-1 (5º recycle)reduced
sugars led to a final maximum ethanol concentration of 17.2 and 34.5
g L-1, at 25 and 30ºC, respectively. Glucose was the preferred
substrate; moreover xylose startup degradation was initiated after a
remaining glucose presence in the medium. Results showed that yeast
acid treatment, performed before each cycle, provided improvements
on cell viability, accompanied by ethanol productivity of 2.16 g L-1 h-
1 at 30ºC. A maximum 36% of xylose was retained in the
fermentation medium and after five-cycle fermentation an ethanol
yield of 0.43 g ethanol/g sugars was observed. S. stipitis fermentation
capacity and tolerance showed better results at 30ºC with 83.4% of
theoretical yield referenced on initial biomass.
Abstract: Depositional environment and source potential of the
different organic-rich levels of Devonian age (up to 990m thick) from
the onshore EC-1 well (Southern Tunisia) were investigated based on
the analysis of more than 130 cutting samples by different
geochemical techniques (Rock-Eval pyrolysis, GC-MS). The
obtained results including Rock Eval Pyrolysis data and biomarker
distribution (terpanes, steranes and aromatics) have been used to
describe the depositional environment and to assess the thermal
maturity of the Devonian organic matter. These results show that the
Emsian deposits exhibit poor to fair TOC contents. The associated
organic matter is composed of mixed kerogen (type II/III), as
indicated by the predominance of C29 steranes over C27 and C28
homologous, that was deposited in a slightly reduced environment
favoring organic matter preservation. Thermal maturity assessed from
Tmax, TNR and MPI-1 values shows a mature stage of organic
matter. The Middle Devonian (Eifelian) shales are rich in type II
organic matter that was deposited in an open marine depositional
environment. The TOC values are high and vary between 2 and 7%
indicating good to excellent source rock. The relatively high HI
values (reaching 547 mg HC/g TOC) and the low values of t19/t23
tricyclic terpane ratio (< 0.2) confirm the marine origin of the organic
matter (type II). During the Upper Devonian, the organic matter was
deposited under variable redox conditions, oxic to suboxic which is
clearly indicated by the low C35/C34 hopanes ratio, immature to
marginally mature with the vitrinite reflectance ranging from 0.5 to
0.7 Ro and Tmax value of 426°C-436 °C and the TOC values range
between 0.8% to 4%.
Abstract: Natural hydrocarbon seepage has helped petroleum
exploration as a direct indicator of gas and/or oil subsurface
accumulations. Surface macro-seeps are generally an indication of a
fault in an active Petroleum Seepage System belonging to a Total
Petroleum System. This paper describes a case study in which
multiple analytical techniques were used to identify and characterize
trace petroleum-related hydrocarbons and other volatile organic
compounds in groundwater samples collected from Sousse aquifer
(Central Tunisia). The analytical techniques used for analyses of
water samples included gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS),
capillary GC with flame-ionization detection, Compound
Specific Isotope Analysis, Rock Eval Pyrolysis. The objective of the
study was to confirm the presence of gasoline and other petroleum
products or other volatile organic pollutants in those samples in order
to assess the respective implication of each of the potentially
responsible parties to the contamination of the aquifer. In addition,
the degree of contamination at different depths in the aquifer was also
of interest. The oil and gas seeps have been investigated using
biomarker and stable carbon isotope analyses to perform oil-oil and
oil-source rock correlations. The seepage gases are characterized by
high CH4 content, very low δ13CCH4 values (-71,9 ‰) and high
C1/C1–5 ratios (0.95–1.0), light deuterium–hydrogen isotope ratios (-
198 ‰) and light δ13CC2 and δ13CCO2 values (-23,8‰ and-23,8‰
respectively) indicating a thermogenic origin with the contribution of
the biogenic gas. An organic geochemistry study was carried out on
the more ten oil seep samples. This study includes light hydrocarbon
and biomarkers analyses (hopanes, steranes, n-alkanes, acyclic
isoprenoids, and aromatic steroids) using GC and GC-MS. The
studied samples show at least two distinct families, suggesting two
different types of crude oil origins: the first oil seeps appears to be
highly mature, showing evidence of chemical and/or biological
degradation and was derived from a clay-rich source rock deposited
in suboxic conditions. It has been sourced mainly by the lower
Fahdene (Albian) source rocks. The second oil seeps was derived
from a carbonate-rich source rock deposited in anoxic conditions,
well correlated with the Bahloul (Cenomanian-Turonian) source rock.
Abstract: Load modeling is one of the central functions in
power systems operations. Electricity cannot be stored, which means
that for electric utility, the estimate of the future demand is necessary
in managing the production and purchasing in an economically
reasonable way. A majority of the recently reported approaches are
based on neural network. The attraction of the methods lies in the
assumption that neural networks are able to learn properties of the
load. However, the development of the methods is not finished, and
the lack of comparative results on different model variations is a
problem. This paper presents a new approach in order to predict the
Tunisia daily peak load. The proposed method employs a
computational intelligence scheme based on the Fuzzy neural
network (FNN) and support vector regression (SVR). Experimental
results obtained indicate that our proposed FNN-SVR technique gives
significantly good prediction accuracy compared to some classical
techniques.
Abstract: The distribution networks are often exposed to harmful
incidents which can halt the electricity supply of the customer. In this
context, we studied a real case of a critical zone of the Tunisian
network which is currently characterized by the dysfunction of its
plan of protection. In this paper, we were interested in the
harmonization of the protection plan settings in order to ensure a
perfect selectivity and a better continuity of service on the whole of
the network.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the assessment of the air
pollution and morbidity relationship in Tunisia. Air pollution is
measured by ozone air concentration and the morbidity is measured
by the number of respiratory-related restricted activity days during
the 2-week period prior to the interview. Socioeconomic data are also
collected in order to adjust for any confounding covariates. Our
sample is composed by 407 Tunisian respondents; 44.7% are women,
the average age is 35.2, near 69% are living in a house built after
1980, and 27.8% have reported at least one day of respiratory-related
restricted activity. The model consists on the regression of the
number of respiratory-related restricted activity days on the air
quality measure and the socioeconomic covariates. In order to correct
for zero-inflation and heterogeneity, we estimate several models
(Poisson, negative binomial, zero inflated Poisson, Poisson hurdle,
negative binomial hurdle and finite mixture Poisson models).
Bootstrapping and post-stratification techniques are used in order to
correct for any sample bias. According to the Akaike information
criteria, the hurdle negative binomial model has the greatest goodness
of fit. The main result indicates that, after adjusting for
socioeconomic data, the ozone concentration increases the probability
of positive number of restricted activity days.
Abstract: Disasters are quite experienced in our days. They are
caused by floods, landslides, and building fires that is the main
objective of this study. To cope with these unexpected events,
precautions must be taken to protect human lives. The emphasis on
disposal work focuses on the resolution of the evacuation problem in
case of no-notice disaster. The problem of evacuation is listed as a
dynamic network flow problem. Particularly, we model the
evacuation problem as an earliest arrival flow problem with load
dependent transit time. This problem is classified as NP-Hard. Our
challenge here is to propose a metaheuristic solution for solving the
evacuation problem. We define our objective as the maximization of
evacuees during earliest periods of a time horizon T. The objective
provides the evacuation of persons as soon as possible. We
performed an experimental study on emergency evacuation from the
tunisian children’s hospital. This work prompts us to look for
evacuation plans corresponding to several situations where the
network dynamically changes.
Abstract: In this paper, we consider the application of Extreme
Value Theory as a risk measurement tool. The Value at Risk, for a set
of indices, from six Stock Exchanges of Frontier markets is
calculated using the Peaks over Threshold method and the
performance of the model index-wise is evaluated using coverage
tests and loss functions. Our results show that “fattailedness” alone of
the data is not enough to justify the use of EVT as a VaR approach.
The structure of the returns dynamics is also a determining factor.
This approach works fine in markets which have had extremes
occurring in the past thus making the model capable of coping with
extremes coming up (Colombo, Tunisia and Zagreb Stock
Exchanges). On the other hand, we find that indices with lower past
than present volatility fail to adequately deal with future extremes
(Mauritius and Kazakhstan). We also conclude that using EVT alone
produces quite static VaR figures not reflecting the actual dynamics
of the data.
Abstract: EU and UK Government targets for minimising and recycling household waste has led the responsible authorities to research the alternatives to landfill. In the work reported here the local waste collection authority (Charnwood Borough Council) has adopted the aspirational strategy of becoming a “Zero Waste Borough” to lead the drive for public participation. The work concludes that the separate collection of food waste would be needed to meet the two regulatory standards on recycling and biologically active wastes.
An analysis of a neighbouring Authority (Newcastle-Under-Lyne Borough Council (NBC), a similar sized local authority that has a successful weekly food waste collection service was undertaken. Results indicate that the main challenges for Charnwood Borough Council would be gaining householder co-operation, the extra costs of collection and organising alternative treatment. The analysis also demonstrated that there was potential offset value via anaerobic digestion for CBC to overcome these difficulties and improve its recycling performance.
Abstract: Textual data plays an important role in the modern
world. The possibilities of applying data mining techniques to
uncover hidden information present in large volumes of text
collections is immense. The Growing Self Organizing Map (GSOM)
is a highly successful member of the Self Organising Map family
and has been used as a clustering and visualisation tool across wide
range of disciplines to discover hidden patterns present in the data.
A comprehensive analysis of the GSOM’s capabilities as a text
clustering and visualisation tool has so far not been published. These
functionalities, namely map visualisation capabilities, automatic
cluster identification and hierarchical clustering capabilities are
presented in this paper and are further demonstrated with experiments
on a benchmark text corpus.
Abstract: Microfibrous palygorskite and tubular halloysite clay mineral combined with nanocrystalline TiO2 are incorporating in the preparation of nanocomposite films on glass substrates via sol-gel route at 450oC. The synthesis is employing nonionic surfactant molecule as pore directing agent along with acetic acid-based sol-gel route without addition of water molecules. Drying and thermal treatment of composite films ensure elimination of organic material lead to the formation of TiO2 nanoparticles homogeneously distributed on the palygorskite or halloysite surfaces. Nanocomposite films without cracks of active anatase crystal phase on palygorskite and halloysite surfaces are characterized by microscopy techniques, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and porosimetry methods in order to examine their structural properties.
The composite palygorskite-TiO2 and halloysite-TiO2 films with variable quantities of palygorskite and halloysite were tested as photocatalysts in the photo-oxidation of Basic Blue 41 azo dye in water. These nanocomposite films proved to be most promising photocatalysts and highly effective to dye’s decoloration in spite of small amount of palygorskite-TiO2 or halloysite-TiO2 catalyst immobilized onto glass substrates mainly due to the high surface area and uniform distribution of TiO2 on clay minerals avoiding aggregation.
Abstract: In the present paper, an experimental investigation was conducted to study the thermodynamic of uranium extraction from Tunisian wet phosphoric acid using the synergistic solvent mixture of di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (DEHPA) and trioctyl phosphine oxid (TOPO) diluted in kerosene. The effect of different factors affecting the extraction process (temperature, TOPO and DEHPA concentrations) has been investigated. The obtained data of temperature effect on the extraction showed that the enthalpy change is -35.8 kJ.mol-1. The slope analysis method was used for determining the stoichiometry of the extracted species.
Abstract: Through anther and microspore culture methods, complete homozygous plants can be produced within a year as compared to the long inbreeding method. Isolated microspore culture is one of the most important techniques for rapid development of haploid plants. The efficiency of this method is influenced by several factors such as cultural conditions, growth regulators, plant media, pretreatments, physical and growth conditions of the donor plants, pollen isolation procedure, etc. The main purpose of this study was to improve the isolated microspore culture protocol in order to increase the efficiency of embryoids, its regeneration and reducing albinisms. Under this study we have tested mainly three different microspore isolation procedures by glass rod, homozeniger and by blending and found the efficiency on gametic embryogenesis. There are three types of media viz. washing, pre-culture and induction was used. The induction medium as AMC (modified MS) supplemented by 2, 4-D (2.5 mg/l), kinetin (0.5 mg/l) and higher amount of D-Manitol (90 g/l) instead of sucrose and two types of amino acids (L-glutamine and L-serine) were used. Out of three main microspore isolation procedure by homogenizer isolation (P4) showed best performance on ELS induction (177%) and green plantlets (104%) compared with other techniques. For all cases albinisims occurred but microspore isolation from excised anthers by glass rod and homogenizer showed lesser numbers of albino plants that was also one of the important findings in this study.
Abstract: We address a complex scheduling problem arising in the wood panel industry with the objective of minimizing a quadratic function of job tardiness. The proposed solution strategy, which is based on an effective genetic algorithm, has been coded and implemented within a major Tunisian company, leader in the wood panel manufacturing. Preliminary experimental results indicate significant decrease of delivery times.
