Abstract: Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a noninvasive
technique that registers signals originating from the firing of neurons
in the brain. The Emotiv EEG Neuroheadset is a consumer product
comprised of 14 EEG channels and was used to record the reactions
of the neurons within the brain to two forms of stimuli in 10
participants. These stimuli consisted of auditory and visual formats
that provided directions of ‘right’ or ‘left.’ Participants were
instructed to raise their right or left arm in accordance with the
instruction given. A scenario in OpenViBE was generated to both
stimulate the participants while recording their data. In OpenViBE,
the Graz Motor BCI Stimulator algorithm was configured to govern
the duration and number of visual stimuli. Utilizing EEGLAB under
the cross platform MATLAB®, the electrodes most stimulated during
the study were defined. Data outputs from EEGLAB were analyzed
using IBM SPSS Statistics® Version 20. This aided in determining
the electrodes to use in the development of a brain-machine interface
(BMI) using real-time EEG signals from the Emotiv EEG
Neuroheadset. Signal processing and feature extraction were
accomplished via the Simulink® signal processing toolbox. An
Arduino™ Duemilanove microcontroller was used to link the Emotiv
EEG Neuroheadset and the right and left Mecha TE™ Hands.
Abstract: In this paper, an effective non-destructive, noninvasive
approach for leak detection was proposed. The process relies
on analyzing thermal images collected by an IR viewer device that
captures thermo-grams. In this study a statistical analysis of the
collected thermal images of the ground surface along the expected
leak location followed by a visual inspection of the thermo-grams
was performed in order to locate the leak. In order to verify the
applicability of the proposed approach the predicted leak location
from the developed approach was compared with the real leak
location. The results showed that the expected leak location was
successfully identified with an accuracy of more than 95%.
Abstract: The ultrasound imaging is very popular to diagnosis
the disease because of its non-invasive nature. The ultrasound
imaging slowly produces low quality images due to the presence of
spackle noise and wave interferences. There are several algorithms to
be proposed for the segmentation of ultrasound carotid artery images
but it requires a certain limit of user interaction. The pixel in an
image is highly correlated so the spatial information of surrounding
pixels may be considered in the process of image segmentation which
improves the results further. When data is highly correlated, one pixel
may belong to more than one cluster with different degree of
membership. There is an important step to computerize the evaluation
of arterial disease severity using segmentation of carotid artery lumen
in 2D and 3D ultrasonography and in finding vulnerable
atherosclerotic plaques susceptible to rupture which can cause stroke.
Abstract: Composite material based on Fe3Si micro-particles
and Mn-Zn nano-ferrite was prepared using powder metallurgy
technology. The sol-gel followed by autocombustion process was
used for synthesis of Mn0.8Zn0.2Fe2O4 ferrite. 3 wt.% of mechanically
milled ferrite was mixed with Fe3Si powder alloy. Mixed micro-nano
powder system was homogenized by the Resonant Acoustic Mixing
using ResodynLabRAM Mixer. This non-invasive homogenization
technique was used to preserve spherical morphology of Fe3Si
powder particles. Uniaxial cold pressing in the closed die at pressure
600 MPa was applied to obtain a compact sample. Microwave
sintering of green compact was realized at 800°C, 20 minutes, in air.
Density of the powders and composite was measured by
Hepycnometry. Impulse excitation method was used to measure
elastic properties of sintered composite. Mechanical properties were
evaluated by measurement of transverse rupture strength (TRS) and
Vickers hardness (HV). Resistivity was measured by 4 point probe
method. Ferrite phase distribution in volume of the composite was
documented by metallographic analysis.
It has been found that nano-ferrite particle distributed among
micro- particles of Fe3Si powder alloy led to high relative density
(~93%) and suitable mechanical properties (TRS >100 MPa, HV
~1GPa, E-modulus ~140 GPa) of the composite. High electric
resistivity (R~6.7 ohm.cm) of prepared composite indicate their
potential application as soft magnetic material at medium and high
frequencies.
Abstract: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been widely
used as a non-invasive method to measure brain activity, but it is
corrupted by baseline drift noise. Here we present a method to measure
regional cerebral blood flow as a derivative of NIRS output. We
investigate whether, when listening to languages, blood flow can
reasonably localize and represent regional brain activity or not. The
prefrontal blood flow distribution pattern when advanced
second-language listeners listened to a second language (L2) was most
similar to that when listening to their first language (L1) among the
patterns of mean and standard deviation. In experiments with 25
healthy subjects, the maximum blood flow was localized to the left
BA46 of advanced listeners. The blood flow presented is robust to
baseline drift and stably localizes regional brain activity.
Abstract: Robotics provides answers to amputees. The most
expensive solutions surgically connect the prosthesis to nerve endings.
There are also several types of non-invasive technologies that recover
nerve messages passing through the muscles. After analyzing these
messages, myoelectric prostheses perform the desired movement.
The main goal is to avoid all surgeries, which can be heavy and offer
cheaper alternatives. For an amputee, we use valid muscles to recover
the electrical signal involved in a muscle movement. EMG sensors
placed on the muscle allows us to measure a potential difference,
which our program transforms into control for a robotic arm with two
degrees of freedom. We have shown the feasibility of non-invasive
prostheses with two degrees of freedom. Signal analysis and an
increase in degrees of freedom is still being improved.
Abstract: The expanded Invasive Weed Optimization algorithm (exIWO) is an optimization metaheuristic modelled on the original IWO version created by the researchers from the University of Tehran. The authors of the present paper have extended the exIWO algorithm introducing a set of both deterministic and non-deterministic strategies of individuals’ selection. The goal of the project was to evaluate the exIWO by testing its usefulness for solving some test instances of the traveling salesman problem (TSP) taken from the TSPLIB collection which allows comparing the experimental results with optimal values.
Abstract: Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a non-invasive and
non-ionizing imaging modality that combines the absorption contrast
of light with ultrasound resolution. Laser is used to deposit optical
energy into a target (i.e., optical fluence). Consequently, the target
temperature rises, and then thermal expansion occurs that leads to
generating a PA signal. In general, most image reconstruction
algorithms for PAI assume uniform fluence within an imaging object.
However, it is known that optical fluence distribution within the
object is non-uniform. This could affect the reconstruction of PA
images. In this study, we have investigated the influence of optical
fluence distribution on PA back-propagation imaging using finite
element method. The uniform fluence was simulated as a triangular
waveform within the object of interest. The non-uniform fluence
distribution was estimated by solving light propagation within a
tissue model via Monte Carlo method. The results show that the PA
signal in the case of non-uniform fluence is wider than the uniform
case by 23%. The frequency spectrum of the PA signal due to the
non-uniform fluence has missed some high frequency components in
comparison to the uniform case. Consequently, the reconstructed
image with the non-uniform fluence exhibits a strong smoothing
effect.
Abstract: This study focuses on the application of sensory thermography, as a non-invasive method to evaluate the musculoskeletal injuries that industry workers performing Highly Repetitive Movements (HRM) may acquire. It was made at a wireless company having the target of analyze temperatures in worker’s wrists, elbows and shoulders in workstations during their activities, this thru sensorial thermography with the goal of detecting maximum temperatures (Tmax) that could indicate possible injuries. The tests were applied during 3 hours for only 2 workers that work in workstations where there’s been the highest index of injuries and accidents. We were made comparisons for each part of the body that were study for both because of the similitude between the activities of the workstations; they were requiring both an immediate evaluation. The Tmax was recorder during the test of the worker 2, in the left wrist, reaching a temperature of 35.088ºC and with a maximum increase of 1.856°C
Abstract: Ambrosia trifida L. is designated as invasive alien
species by the Act on the Conservation and Use of Biodiversity by the
Ministry of Environment, Korea. The purpose of present paper was to
investigate the inhibitory effects of aqueous extracts of A.trifida on the
development of root hairs of Triticum aestivum L., and Allium
tuberosum Rottler ex Spreng and the electrophoretic protein patterns of
their radicles. The development of root hairs was inhibited by
increasing of aqueous extract concentrations. Through SDS-PAGE,
the electrophoretic protein bands of extracted proteins from their
radicles were appeared in controls, but protein bands of specific
molecular weight disappeared or weakened in treatments. In
conclusion, inhibitory effects of A. trifida made two receptor species
changed morphologically, and at the molecular level in early growth
stage.
Abstract: The centre of rotation of the hip joint is needed for an
accurate simulation of the joint performance in many applications
such as pre-operative planning simulation, human gait analysis, and
hip joint disorders. In human movement analysis, the hip joint center
can be estimated using a functional method based on the relative
motion of the femur to pelvis measured using reflective markers
attached to the skin surface. The principal source of errors in
estimation of hip joint centre location using functional methods is
soft tissue artefacts due to the relative motion between the markers
and bone. One of the main objectives in human movement analysis is
the assessment of soft tissue artefact as the accuracy of functional
methods depends upon it. Various studies have described the
movement of soft tissue artefact invasively, such as intra-cortical
pins, external fixators, percutaneous skeletal trackers, and Roentgen
photogrammetry. The goal of this study is to present a non-invasive
method to assess the displacements of the markers relative to the
underlying bone using optical motion capture data and tissue
thickness from ultrasound measurements during flexion, extension,
and abduction (all with knee extended) of the hip joint. Results show
that the artefact skin marker displacements are non-linear and larger
in areas closer to the hip joint. Also marker displacements are
dependent on the movement type and relatively larger in abduction
movement. The quantification of soft tissue artefacts can be used as a
basis for a correction procedure for hip joint kinematics.
Abstract: Non-invasive Brain Computer Interface like Electroencephalography (EEG) which directly taps neurological signals, is being widely explored these days to connect paralytic patients/elderly with the external environment. However, in India the research is confined to laboratory settings and is not reaching the mass for rehabilitation purposes. An attempt has been made in this paper to analyze real time acquired EEG signal using cost effective and portable headset unit EMOTIV. Signal processing of real time acquired EEG is done using EEGLAB in MATLAB and EDF Browser application software platforms. Independent Component Analysis algorithm of EEGLAB is explored to identify deliberate eye blink in the attained neural signal. Time Frequency transforms and Data statistics obtained using EEGLAB along with component activation results of EDF browser clearly indicate voluntary eye blink in AF3 channel. The spectral analysis indicates dominant frequency component at 1.536000Hz representing the delta wave component of EEG during voluntary eye blink action. An algorithm is further designed to generate an active high signal based on thoughtful eye blink that can be used for plethora of control applications for rehabilitation.
Abstract: This paper deals with the traditional Malay healing ritualistic ceremony known as Main Puteri. This non-invasive intervention uses the vehicle of performance to administer the healing process. It employs the performance elements of Makyung, that is, music, movements/dance and dramatic dialogue to heal psychosomatic maladies. There are two perspectives to this therapeutic healing process, one traditional and the other scientific. From the traditional perspective, the psychosomatic illness is attributed to the infestations/possessions by malevolent spirits. To heal such patients, these spirits must be exorcised through placating them by making offerings. From the scientific perspective, the music (sonic orders), movements (kinetic energy) and smell (olfactory) connect with the brain waves to release the chemicals that would activate the internal healing energy. Currently, in Main Puteri, the therapeutic healing ritual is no longer relevant as modern clinical medicine has proven to be more effective. Thus, Main Puteri is an anachronism in today’s technologically advanced Malaysia.
Abstract: A simple, rapid and non-invasive electromagnetic sensor (C-FAST device) was- patented; for diagnosis of HCV RNA. Aim: To test the validity of the device compared to standard HCV PCR. Subjects and Methods: The first phase was done as pilot in Egypt on 79 participants; the second phase was done in five centers: one center from Egypt, two centers from Pakistan and two centers from India (800, 92 and 113 subjects respectively). The third phase was done nationally as multicenter study on (1600) participants for ensuring its representativeness. Results: When compared to PCR technique, C-FAST device revealed sensitivity 95% to 100%, specificity 95.5% to 100%, PPV 89.5% to 100%, NPV 95% to 100% and positive likelihood ratios 21.8% to 38.5%. Conclusion: It is practical evidence that HCV nucleotides emit electromagnetic signals that can be used for its identification. As compared to PCR, C-FAST is an accurate, valid and non-invasive device.
Abstract: Aims: To evaluate the application of non-invasive diabetes risk assessment tool in community pharmacy setting. Methods: Thai diabetes risk score was applied to assess individuals at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Interactive computer-based risk screening (IT) and paper-based risk screening (PT) tools were applied. Participants aged over 25 years with no known diabetes were recruited in six participating pharmacies. Results: A total of 187 clients, mean aged (+SD) was 48.6 (+10.9) years. 35% were at high risk. The mean value of willingness-to-pay for the service fee in IT group was significantly higher than PT group (p=0.013). No significant difference observed for the satisfaction between groups. Conclusions: Non-invasive risk assessment tool, whether paper-based or computerized-based can be applied in community pharmacy to support the enhancing role of pharmacists in chronic disease management. Long term follow up is needed to determine the impact of its application in clinical, humanistic and economic outcomes.
Abstract: Psychoacoustics has become a potential area of research due to the growing interest of both laypersons and medical and mental health professionals. Non invasive brain computer interface like Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely being used in this field. An attempt has been made in this paper to examine the response of EEG signals to acoustic stimuli further analyzing the brain electrical activity. The real time EEG is acquired for 6 participants using a cost effective and portable EMOTIV EEG neuro headset. EEG data analysis is further done using EMOTIV test bench, EDF browser and EEGLAB (MATLAB Tool) application software platforms. Spectral analysis of acquired neural signals (AF3 channel) using these software platforms are clearly indicative of increased brain activity in various bands. The inferences drawn from such an analysis have significant correlation with subject’s subjective reporting of the experiences. The results suggest that the methodology adopted can further be used to assist patients with sleeping and depressive disorders.
Abstract: Real time non-invasive Brain Computer Interfaces have a significant progressive role in restoring or maintaining a quality life for medically challenged people. This manuscript provides a comprehensive review of emerging research in the field of cognitive/affective computing in context of human neural responses. The perspectives of different emotion assessment modalities like face expressions, speech, text, gestures, and human physiological responses have also been discussed. Focus has been paid to explore the ability of EEG (Electroencephalogram) signals to portray thoughts, feelings, and unspoken words. An automated workflow-based protocol to design an EEG-based real time Brain Computer Interface system for analysis and classification of human emotions elicited by external audio/visual stimuli has been proposed. The front end hardware includes a cost effective and portable Emotiv EEG Neuroheadset unit, a personal computer and a set of external stimulators. Primary signal analysis and processing of real time acquired EEG shall be performed using MATLAB based advanced brain mapping toolbox EEGLab/BCILab. This shall be followed by the development of MATLAB based self-defined algorithm to capture and characterize temporal and spectral variations in EEG under emotional stimulations. The extracted hybrid feature set shall be used to classify emotional states using artificial intelligence tools like Artificial Neural Network. The final system would result in an inexpensive, portable and more intuitive Brain Computer Interface in real time scenario to control prosthetic devices by translating different brain states into operative control signals.
Abstract: The aquatic plants are a promising renewable energy resource. Lake Fúquene polluting macrophytes, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes C. Mart.) and Brazilian elodea (Egeria densa Planch.), were saccharifiedby different treatments and fermented to ethanol by native yeasts. Among the tested chemical and biological methods for the saccharification, Pleurotus ostreatus at 10% (m/v) was chosen as the best pre-treatment in both macrophytes (P
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of laser
radiation on the skin wound healing using infrared thermography as
non-invasive method for the monitoring of the skin temperature
changes during laser treatment. Thirty Wistar rats were used in this
study. A skin lesion was performed at the leg on all rats. The animals
were exposed to laser radiation (λ = 670 nm, P = 15 mW, DP = 16.31
mW/cm2) for 600 s. Thermal images of wound were acquired before
and after laser irradiation. The results have demonstrated that the
tissue temperature decreases from 35.5±0.50°C in the first treatment
day to 31.3±0.42°C after the third treatment day. This value is close
to the normal value of the skin temperature and indicates the end of
the skin repair process. In conclusion, the improvements in the
wound healing following exposure to laser radiation have been
revealed by infrared thermography.
Abstract: Antioxidants contribute to endogenous photoprotection
and are important for the maintenance of skin health. The study was carried out to compare the skin hydration and transepidermal
water loss (TEWL) effects of a stable cosmetic preparation
containing flavonoids, following two applications a day over a period
of tenth week. The skin trans-epidermal water loss and skin hydration
effect was measured at the beginning and up to the end of study period of ten weeks. Any effect produced was measured by Corneometer and TEWA meter (Non-invasive probe).
Two formulations were developed for this study design. Formulation one the control formulation in which no apple juice
extract( Flavonoids) was incorporated while second one was the active formulation in which the apple juice extract (3%) containing
flavonoids was incorporated into water in oil emulsion using Abil EM 90 as an emulsifier. Stable formulations (control and Active)
were applied on human cheeks (n = 12) for a study period of 10 weeks. Result of each volunteer of skin hydration and TEWL was
measured by corneometer and TEWA meter. By using ANOVA and Paired sample t test as a statistical evaluation, result of both base and
formulation were compared. Statistical significant results (p≤0.05)
were observed regarding skin hydration and TEWL when two creams, control and Formulation were compared. It showed that
desired formulation (Active) may have interesting application as an
active moisturizing cream on healthy skin.
