Abstract: Medical imaging produces human body pictures in
digital form. Since these imaging techniques produce prohibitive
amounts of data, compression is necessary for storage and
communication purposes. Many current compression schemes
provide a very high compression rate but with considerable loss of
quality. On the other hand, in some areas in medicine, it may be
sufficient to maintain high image quality only in region of interest
(ROI). This paper discusses a contribution to the lossless
compression in the region of interest of Scintigraphic images based
on SPIHT algorithm and global transform thresholding using
Huffman coding.
Abstract: Recently, there have been a lot of earthquakes in Japan.
It is necessary to promote seismic isolation devices for buildings. The
devices have been hardly diffused in attached houses, because the
devices are very expensive. We should develop a low-cost seismic
isolation device for detached houses. We suggested a new seismic
isolation device which uses a two-layer circular tube as a unit. If
hysteresis is produced in the two-layer circular tube under lateral
compression load, we think that the two-layer circular tube can have
energy absorbing capacity. It is necessary to contact the outer layer
and the inner layer to produce hysteresis. We have previously reported
how the inner layer comes in contact with the outer layer from a
perspective of analysis used mechanics of materials. We have clarified
that the inner layer comes in contact with the outer layer under a lateral
compression load. In this paper, we explored contact area between the
outer layer and the inner layer under a lateral compression load by
using FEA. We think that changing the inner layer’s thickness is
effective in increase the contact area. In order to change the inner
layer’s thickness, we changed the shape of the inner layer. As a result,
the contact area changes depending on the inner layer’s thickness.
Additionally, we experimented to check whether hysteresis occurs in
fact. As a consequence, we can reveal hysteresis in the two-layer
circular tube under the condition.
Abstract: The sub-task pattern in terms of deviations and defects
should be identified and understood in order to improve the quality of
practices in construction projects. Therefore, sub-task susceptibility
to exposure to deviations and defects has been evaluated and
classified via six classifications proposed in this study. Thirty-four
case studies of specific sub-tasks (from compression members in
constructed concrete structures) were collected from seven
construction projects in order to examine the study’s proposed
classifications. The study revealed that the sub-task has a high
sensitivity to deviation, where 91% of the cases were recorded as
deviations; however, only 19% of cases were recorded as defects.
Other findings were that the actual work during the execution process
is a high source of deviation for this sub-task (74%), while only 26%
of the source of deviation was due to both design documentation and
the actual work. These findings significantly imply that the study’s
proposed classifications could be used to determine the pattern of
each sub-task and develop proactive actions to overcome issues of
sub-task deviations and defects.
Abstract: Metallic foams have good potential for lightweight
structures for impact and blast mitigation. Therefore it is important to
find out the optimized foam structure (i.e. cell size, shape, relative
density, and distribution) to maximise energy absorption. In this
paper, quasistatic compression and microstructural characterization
of closed-cell aluminium foams of different pore size and cell
distributions have been carried out. We present results for two
different aluminium metal foams of density 0.49-0.51 g/cc and 0.31-
0.34 g/cc respectively that have been tested in quasi-static
compression. The influence of cell geometry and cell topology on
quasistatic compression behaviour has been investigated using optical
microscope and computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. It is
shown that the deformation is not uniform in the structure and
collapse begins at the weakest point.
Abstract: In this study, a comparative analysis of the approaches
associated with the use of neural network algorithms for effective
solution of a complex inverse problem – the problem of identifying
and determining the individual concentrations of inorganic salts in
multicomponent aqueous solutions by the spectra of Raman
scattering of light – is performed. It is shown that application of
artificial neural networks provides the average accuracy of
determination of concentration of each salt no worse than 0.025 M.
The results of comparative analysis of input data compression
methods are presented. It is demonstrated that use of uniform
aggregation of input features allows decreasing the error of
determination of individual concentrations of components by 16-18%
on the average.
Abstract: High temperature deformation behavior of cast
Fe-20Cr-5Al alloy has been investigated in this study by performing
tensile and compression tests at temperatures from 1100 to 1200oC.
Rectangular ingots of which the dimensions were 300×300×100 in
millimeter were cast using vacuum induction melting. Phase
equilibrium was calculated using the FactSage®, thermodynamic
software and database. Tensile strength of cast Fe-20Cr-5Al alloy was
4 MPa at 1200oC. With temperature decreased, tensile strength
increased rapidly and reached up to 13 MPa at 1100oC. Elongation
also increased from 18 to 80% with temperature decreased from
1200oC to 1100oC. Microstructure observation revealed that M23C6
carbide was precipitated along the grain boundary and within the
matrix.
Abstract: The use of biodiesel in conventional diesel engines results in substantial reduction of unburned hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and particulate matters. The performance, emission and combustion characteristics of a single cylinder four stroke variable compression ratio engine when fueled with Karanja (Pongamia) methyl ester and its 10-50 % blends with diesel (on a volume basis) are investigated and compared with standard diesel. The suitability of karanja methyl ester as a biofuel has been established in this study. The useful brake power obtained is similar to diesel fuel for all loads. Experiment has been conducted at a fixed engine speed of 1500 rpm, variable load and at compression ratios of 17.5:1 and 18.5:1. The impact of compression ratio on fuel consumption, combustion pressures and exhaust gas emissions has been investigated and presented. Optimum compression ratio which gives best performance has been identified. The results indicate longer ignition delay, maximum rate of pressure rise, lower heat release rate and higher mass fraction burnt at higher compression ratio for pongamia oil methyl ester when compared to that of diesel. The brake thermal efficiency for pongamia oil methyl ester blends and diesel has been calculated and the blend B20 is found to give maximum thermal efficiency. The blends when used as fuel results in reduction of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and increase in nitrogen oxides emissions. PME as an oxygenated fuel generated more complete combustion, which means increased torque and power. This is also supported with higher thermal efficiencies of the PME blends. NOx is slightly increased due to the higher combustion temperature and the presence of fuel oxygen with the blend at full load. PME as a new Biodiesel and its blends can be used in diesel engines without any engine modification.
Abstract: Non-linear FEM calculations are indispensable when important technical information like operating performance of a rubber component is desired. Rubber bumpers built into air-spring structures may undergo large deformations under load, which in itself shows non-linear behavior. The changing contact range between the parts and the incompressibility of the rubber increases this non-linear behavior further. The material characterization of an elastomeric component is also a demanding engineering task. In this paper a comprehensive investigation is introduced including laboratory measurements, mesh density analysis and complex finite element simulations to obtain the load-displacement curve of the chosen rubber bumper. Contact and friction effects are also taken into consideration. The aim of this research is to elaborate a FEM model which is accurate and competitive for a future shape optimization task.
Abstract: Various biomass based resources, which can be used
as an extender, or a complete substitute of diesel fuel may have very
significant role in the development of agriculture, industrial and
transport sectors in the energy crisis. Use of Karanja oil methyl ester
biodiesel in a CI DI engine was found highly compatible with engine
performance along with lower exhaust emission as compared to
diesel fuel but with slightly higher NOx emission and low wear
characteristics. The combustion related properties of vegetable oils
are somewhat similar to diesel oil. Neat vegetable oils or their blends
with diesel, however, pose various long-term problems in
compression ignition engines. These undesirable features of
vegetable oils are because of their inherent properties like high
viscosity, low volatility, and polyunsaturated character. Pongamia
methyl ester (PME) was prepared by transesterification process using
methanol for long term engine operations. The physical and
combustion-related properties of the fuels thus developed were found
to be closer to that of the diesel. A neat biodiesel (PME) was selected
as a fuel for the tribological study of biofuels.
Two similar new engines were completely disassembled and
subjected to dimensioning of various vital moving parts and then
subjected to long-term endurance tests on neat biodiesel and diesel
respectively. After completion of the test, both the engines were
again disassembled for physical inspection and wear measurement of
various vital parts. The lubricating oil samples drawn from both
engines were subjected to atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) for
measurement of various wear metal traces present. The additional
lubricating property of biodiesel fuel due to higher viscosity as
compared to diesel fuel resulted in lower wear of moving parts and
thus improved the engine durability with a bio-diesel fuel. Results
reported from AAS tests confirmed substantially lower wear and thus
improved life for biodiesel operated engines.
Abstract: High temperature deformation behavior of cast 310S stainless steel has been investigated in this study by performing tensile and compression tests at temperatures from 900 to 1200oC. Rectangular ingots of which the dimensions were 350×350×100 in millimeter were cast using vacuum induction melting. Phase equilibrium was calculated using the FactSage®, thermodynamic software and database. Thermal expansion coefficient was also measured on the ingot in the temperature range from room temperature to 1200oC. Tensile strength of cast 310S stainless steel was 9 MPa at 1200oC, which is a little higher than that of a wrought 310S. With temperature decreased, tensile strength increased rapidly and reached up to 72 MPa at 900oC. Elongation also increased with temperature decreased. Microstructure observation revealed that s phase was precipitated along the grain boundary and within the matrix over 1200oC, which is detrimental to high temperature elongation.
Abstract: Electron Beam Melting (EBM) process was used to prepare porous scaffolds with controlled porosity to ensure optimal levels of osteointegration for different trabeculae sizes. Morphological characterization by means of SEM analyses was carried out to assess pore dimensions; tensile, compression and adhesion tests have been carried out to determine the mechanical behavior. The results indicate that EBM process allows the creation of regular and repeatable porous scaffolds. Mechanical properties greatly depend on pore dimension and on bulk-pore ratio. Adhesion resistance meets the normative requirements, and the overall performance of the produced structures is compatible with potential orthopaedic applications.
Abstract: The aesthetic qualities and the versatility of reinforced
concrete have made it a popular choice for many architects and
structural engineers. Therefore, the exploration of natural materials
such as gravels and sands as well as lime-stone for cement production
is increasing to produce a concrete material. The exploration must
affect to the environment. Therefore, the using of the concrete
materials should be as efficient as possible. According to its natural
behavior of the concrete material, it is strong in compression and weak
in tension. Therefore the contribution of the tensile stresses of the
concrete to the flexural capacity of the beams is neglected. However,
removing of concrete on tension zone affects to the decreasing of
flexural capacity. Introduce the strut action of truss structures may an
alternative to solve the decreasing of flexural capacity. A series of
specimens were prepared to clarify the effect of the truss structures in
the concrete beams without concrete on the tension zone. Results
indicated that the truss system is necessary for the external reinforced
concrete beams. The truss system of concrete beam without concrete
on tension zone (BR) could develop almost same capacity to the
normal beam (BN). It can be observed also that specimens BR has
lower number of cracks than specimen BN. This may be caused by the
fact that there was no bonding effect on the tensile reinforcement on
specimen BR to distribute the cracks.
Abstract: Depletion and hazardous gas emissions associated
with fossil fuels have caused scientists and global attention to focus
on the use of “alternative, eco-friendly substitutes for use in
Compression Ignition Engines. In this work, biodiesel was produced
by trans-esterification of soybean obtained from a Nigerian market
using Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) as a catalyst.” After the
production, the physical properties (specific gravity to kinematic
viscosity and net calorific value) of the Soybean-biodiesel produced
and petrol diesel obtained from a filling station in Nigeria were
determined, and these properties conform to conventional standards
(ASTM). A cummins-6V-92TA DDEC diesel (Compression ignition,
CI) engine was run on various biodiesel-petrol diesel blends (0/100,
10/90, 20/80, 30/70 and 40/60), the B20 (blend 20/80) was found to
be the most satisfactory.
Abstract: Construction industry in Greece consumes annually
more than 25 million tons of natural aggregates originating mainly
from quarries. At the same time, more than 2 million tons of
construction and demolition waste are deposited every year, usually
without control, therefore increasing the environmental impact of this
sector. A potential alternative for saving natural resources and
minimize landfilling, could be the recycling and re-use of Concrete
and Demolition Waste (CDW) in concrete production. Moreover, in
order to conform to the European legislation, Greece is obliged to
recycle non-hazardous construction and demolition waste to a
minimum of 70% by 2020. In this paper characterization of recycled
materials - commercially and laboratory produced, coarse and fine,
Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCA) - has been performed. Namely,
X-Ray Fluorescence and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used
for chemical and mineralogical analysis respectively. Physical
properties such as particle density, water absorption, sand equivalent
and resistance to fragmentation were also determined. This study,
first time made in Greece, aims at outlining the differences between
RCA and natural aggregates and evaluating their possible influence
in concrete performance. Results indicate that RCA’s chemical
composition is enriched in Si, Al, and alkali oxides compared to
natural aggregates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses results
indicated the presence of calcite, quartz and minor peaks of mica and
feldspars. From all the evaluated physical properties of coarse RCA,
only water absorption and resistance to fragmentation seem to have a
direct influence on the properties of concrete. Low Sand Equivalent
and significantly high water absorption values indicate that fine
fractions of RCA cannot be used for concrete production unless
further processed. Chemical properties of RCA in terms of water
soluble ions are similar to those of natural aggregates. Four different
concrete mixtures were produced and examined, replacing natural
coarse aggregates with RCA by a ratio of 0%, 25%, 50% and 75%
respectively. Results indicate that concrete mixtures containing
recycled concrete aggregates have a minor deterioration of their
properties (3-9% lower compression strength at 28 days) compared to
conventional concrete containing the same cement quantity.
Abstract: Concrete-filled-steel-tube (CFST) columns are becoming increasingly popular owing to the superior behavior contributed by the composite action. However, this composite action cannot be fully developed because of different dilation properties between steel tube and concrete. During initial compression, there will be de-bonding between the constitutive materials. As a result, the strength, initial stiffness and ductility of CFST columns reduce significantly. To resolve this problem, external confinement in the form of spirals is proposed to improve the interface bonding. In this paper, a total of 14CFST columns with high-strength as well as ultra-high-strength concrete in-filled were fabricated and tested under uni-axial compression. From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the proposed spirals can improve the strength, initial stiffness, ductility and the interface bonding condition of CFST columns by restraining the lateral expansion of steel tube and core concrete. Moreover, the failure modes of confined core concrete change due to the strong confinement provided by spirals.
Abstract: The modern energy-efficient houses are often founded on a thermal insulation (TI) layer placed under the building’s RC foundation slab.The purpose of the paper is to identify the potential problems of the buildings founded on TI layer from the seismic point of view. The two main goals of the study were to assess the seismic behavior of such buildings, and to search for the critical structural parameters affecting the response of the superstructure as well as of the extruded polystyrene (XPS) layer. As a test building a multi-storeyed RC frame structure with and without the XPS layer under the foundation slab has been investigated utilizing nonlinear dynamic (time-history) and static (pushover) analyses. The structural response has been investigated with reference to the following performance parameters: i) Building’s lateral roof displacements, ii) Edge compressive and shear strains of the XPS, iii) Horizontal accelerations of the superstructure, iv) Plastic hinge patterns of the superstructure, v) Part of the foundation in compression, and vi) Deformations of the underlying soil and vertical displacements of the foundation slab (i.e. identifying the potential uplift). The results have shown that in the case of higher and stiff structures lying on firm soil the use of XPS under the foundation slab might induce amplified structural peak responses compared to the building models without XPS under the foundation slab. The analysis has revealed that the superstructure as well as the XPS response is substantially affected by the stiffness of the foundation slab.
Abstract: This paper presents a detailed description of evaporative cooling systems used for space cooling in Mina Valley, Saudi Arabia. The thermal performance and environmental impact of the evaporative coolers were evaluated. It was found that the evaporative cooling systems used for space cooling in pilgrims’ accommodations and in the train stations could reduce energy consumption by as much as 75% and cut carbon dioxide emission by 78% compared to traditional vapour compression systems.
Abstract: The strength of reinforced concrete depends on the member dimensions and material properties. The properties of concrete and steel materials are not constant but random variables. The variability of concrete strength is due to batching errors, variations in mixing, cement quality uncertainties, differences in the degree of compaction and disparity in curing. Similarly, the variability of steel strength is attributed to the manufacturing process, rolling conditions, characteristics of base material, uncertainties in chemical composition, and the microstructure-property relationships. To account for such uncertainties, codes of practice for reinforced concrete design impose resistance factors to ensure structural reliability over the useful life of the structure. In this investigation, the effects of reductions in concrete and reinforcing steel strengths from the nominal values, beyond those accounted for in the structural design codes, on the structural reliability are assessed. The considered limit states are flexure, shear and axial compression based on the ACI 318-11 structural concrete building code. Structural safety is measured in terms of a reliability index. Probabilistic resistance and load models are compiled from the available literature. The study showed that there is a wide variation in the reliability index for reinforced concrete members designed for flexure, shear or axial compression, especially when the live-to-dead load ratio is low. Furthermore, variations in concrete strength have minor effect on the reliability of beams in flexure, moderate effect on the reliability of beams in shear, and sever effect on the reliability of columns in axial compression. On the other hand, changes in steel yield strength have great effect on the reliability of beams in flexure, moderate effect on the reliability of beams in shear, and mild effect on the reliability of columns in axial compression. Based on the outcome, it can be concluded that the reliability of beams is sensitive to changes in the yield strength of the steel reinforcement, whereas the reliability of columns is sensitive to variations in the concrete strength. Since the embedded target reliability in structural design codes results in lower structural safety in beams than in columns, large reductions in material strengths compromise the structural safety of beams much more than they affect columns.
Abstract: Fully reusable spaceplanes do not exist as yet. This implies that design-qualification for optimized highly-integrated forebody-inlet configuration of booster-stage vehicle cannot be based on archival data of other spaceplanes. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel TIPSO-SVM expert system methodology. A non-trivial problem related to optimization and classification of hypersonic forebody-inlet configuration in conjunction with mass-model of the two-stage-to-orbit (TSTO) vehicle is solved. The hybrid-heuristic machine learning methodology is based on two-step improved particle swarm optimizer (TIPSO) algorithm and two-step support vector machine (SVM) data classification method. The efficacy of method is tested by first evolving an optimal configuration for hypersonic compression system using TIPSO algorithm; thereafter, classifying the results using two-step SVM method. In the first step extensive but non-classified mass-model training data for multiple optimized configurations is segregated and pre-classified for learning of SVM algorithm. In second step the TIPSO optimized mass-model data is classified using the SVM classification. Results showed remarkable improvement in configuration and mass-model along with sizing parameters.
Abstract: The finite element method is used to obtain the elastic buckling load factor for square isotropic plate containing circular, square and rectangular cutouts. ANSYS commercial finite element software had been used in the study. The applied inplane loads considered are uniaxial and biaxial compressions. In all the cases the load is distributed uniformly along the plate outer edges. The effects of the size and shape of concentric cutouts with different plate thickness ratios and the influence of plate edge conditions, such as SSSS, CCCC and mixed boundary condition SCSC on the plate buckling strength have been considered in the analysis.
