Abstract: The use of new literacies within science classrooms needs to be balanced by teachers to both teach different forms of communication while assessing content area proficiency. Using new literacies such as Twitter and Facebook needs to be incorporated into science content area literacy studies in addition to continuing to use generally-accepted forms of scientific content area presentation which include scientific papers and textbooks. The research question this literature review seeks to answer is “What are some ways in which new forms of literacy are better suited to teach scientific content area literacy to 21st century learners?” The research question is addressed through a literature review that highlights methods currently being used to educate the next wave of learners in the world of science content area literacy. Both temporal discourse analysis (TDA) and critical discourse analysis (CDA) were used to determine the need to use new literacies to teach science content area literacy. Increased use of digital technologies and a change in science content area pedagogy were explored.
Abstract: The paper discusses the subinterval-based numerical
method for fractional derivative computations. It is now referred
to by its acronym – SubIval. The basis of the method is briefly
recalled. The ability of the method to be applied in time stepping
solvers is discussed. The possibility of implementing a time step size
adaptive solver is also mentioned. The solver is tested on a transient
circuit example. In order to display the accuracy of the solver –
the results have been compared with those obtained by means of a
semi-analytical method called gcdAlpha. The time step size adaptive
solver applying SubIval has been proven to be very accurate as
the results are very close to the referential solution. The solver is
currently able to solve FDE (fractional differential equations) with
various derivative orders for each equation and any type of source
time functions.
Abstract: Municipal solid waste (MSW) generation is among the most significant sources which threaten the global environmental health. Solid Waste Management has been an important environmental problem in developing countries because of the difficulties in finding sustainable solutions for solid wastes. Therefore, more efforts are needed to be implemented to overcome this problem. Lebanon has suffered a severe solid waste management problem in 2015, and a new landfill site was proposed to solve the existing problem. The study aims to identify and locate the most suitable area to construct a landfill taking into consideration the sustainable development to overcome the present situation and protect the future demands. Throughout the article, a landfill site selection methodology was discussed using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Several environmental, economic and social factors were taken as criterion for selection of a landfill. Soil, geology, and LUC (Land Use and Land Cover) indices with the Sustainable Development Index were main inputs to create the final map of Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) for landfill site. Different factors were determined to define each index. Input data of each factor was managed, visualized and analyzed using GIS. GIS was used as an important tool to identify suitable areas for landfill. Spatial Analysis (SA), Analysis and Management GIS tools were implemented to produce input maps capable of identifying suitable areas related to each index. Weight has been assigned to each factor in the same index, and the main weights were assigned to each index used. The combination of the different indices map generates the final output map of ESA. The output map was reclassified into three suitability classes of low, moderate, and high suitability. Results showed different locations suitable for the construction of a landfill. Results also reflected the importance of GIS and MCDA in helping decision makers finding a solution of solid wastes by a sanitary landfill.
Abstract: English Language Teaching (ELT) is widely promoted across the world. ELT textbooks play pivotal roles in the mentioned process. Since biases of authors have been an issue of continuing interest to analysts over the past few years, the present study seeks to analyze an ELT textbook using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). To obtain the goal of the study, the listening section of a book called World English 3 (new edition) has been analyzed in terms of the cultures and countries mentioned in the listening section of the book using content-based analysis. The analysis indicates biases towards certain cultures. Moreover, some countries are shown as rich and powerful countries, while some others have been shown as poor ones without considering the history behind them.
Abstract: This paper discusses the intake of combining multi-criteria
decision analysis (MCDA) with OLAP systems, to generate
an integrated analysis process dealing with complex multi-criteria
decision-making situations. In this context, a multi-agent modeling is
presented for decision support systems by combining multi-criteria
decision analysis (MCDA) with OLAP systems. The proposed
modeling which consists in performing the multi-agent system
(MAS) architecture, procedure and protocol of the negotiation model
is elaborated as a decision support tool for complex decision-making
environments. Our objective is to take advantage from the multi-agent
system which distributes resources and computational
capabilities across interconnected agents, and provide a problem
modeling in terms of autonomous interacting component-agents.
Thus, the identification and evaluation of criteria as well as the
evaluation and ranking of alternatives in a decision support situation
will be performed by organizing tasks and user preferences between
different agents in order to reach the right decision. At the end, an
illustrative example is conducted to demonstrate the function and
effectiveness of our MAS modeling.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of
supplementing broiler starter diet with different levels of an essential
oil blend (EOB) containing capsaicin, carvacrol and cinnamaldehyde
on the performance of broilers. A total of 300 day-old straight-run
Cobb broiler chicks were randomly assigned to three treatments after
7-day group brooding following a completely randomized design
(CRD). Birds assigned in treatment 1 were given starter basal diet
while those in treatments 2 and 3 were given starter basal diet with
400 mg/kg antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) and 150 mg/kg EOB,
respectively, until the 28th day. Basal finisher feed were given for all
the treatments until harvest. Following 37 d feeding, body weight
gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency, dressing percentage,
livability and jejunal villi height were determined. Results showed no
significant differences (P>0.05) in growth performance. However,
villi height and crypt depth was significantly lower for birds fed
EOB.
Abstract: This study was conducted in the area of Vlora Bay,
Albania. Data about Sea Turtles Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas,
belonging to two periods of time (1984 – 1991; 2008 – 2014) are
given. All data gathered were analyzed using recent methodologies.
For all turtles captured (as by catch), the Curve Carapace Length
(CCL) and Curved Carapace Width (CCW) were measured. These
data were statistically analyzed, where the mean was 67.11 cm for
CCL and 57.57 cm for CCW of all individuals studied (n=13). All
untagged individuals of marine turtles were tagged using metallic
tags (Stockbrand’s titanium tag) with an Albanian address. Sex was
determined and resulted that 45.4% of individuals were females,
27.3% males and 27.3% juveniles. All turtles were studied for the
presence of the epibionts. The area of Vlora Bay is used from marine
turtles (Caretta caretta) as a migratory corridor to pass from
Mediterranean to the northern part of the Adriatic Sea.
Abstract: In this study was monitored the population of the
European Pond Turtle, Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758) in the area
of Narta Lagoon, Vlora Bay (Albania), from August to October 2014.
A total of 54 individuals of E. orbicularis were studied using
different methodologies. Curved Carapace Length (CCL), Plastron
Length (PL) and Curved Carapace Width (CCW) were measured for
each individual of E. orbicularis and were statistically analyzed. All
captured turtles were separated in seven different size – classes based
on their carapace length (CCL). Each individual of E. orbicularis was
marked by notching the carapace (marginal scutes). Form all
individuals captured resulted that 37 were females (68.5%), 14 males
(25.9%), 3 juveniles (5.5%), while 18 individuals of E. orbicularis
were recaptured for the first and some for the second time.
Abstract: This paper discusses the role and importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and social Networking (SN) in the process of decision making for Flood Risk and Knowledge Management Strategies. We use Mozambique Red Cross (CVM) as the case study and further more we address scenarios for flood risk management strategies, using earlier warning and social networking and we argue that a sustainable desirable stage of life can be achieved by developing scenario strategic planning based on backcasting.
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) consists of many
sensor nodes that are placed on unattended environments such as
military sites in order to collect important information.
Implementing a secure protocol that can prevent forwarding forged
data and modifying content of aggregated data and has low delay
and overhead of communication, computing and storage is very
important. This paper presents a new protocol for concealed data
aggregation (CDA). In this protocol, the network is divided to
virtual cells, nodes within each cell produce a shared key to send
and receive of concealed data with each other. Considering to data
aggregation in each cell is locally and implementing a secure
authentication mechanism, data aggregation delay is very low and
producing false data in the network by malicious nodes is not
possible. To evaluate the performance of our proposed protocol, we
have presented computational models that show the performance
and low overhead in our protocol.
Abstract: One of the most important issues in multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is to determine the weights of criteria so that all alternatives can be compared based on the collective performance of criteria. In this paper, one of popular methods in data envelopment analysis (DEA) known as common weights (CWs) is used to determine the weights in MCDA. Two frontiers named ideal and anti-ideal frontiers, instead of ideal and anti-ideal alternatives, are defined based on two new proposed CWs models. Ideal and antiideal frontiers are more flexible than that of alternatives. According to the optimal solutions of these two models, the distances of an alternative from the ideal and anti-ideal frontiers are derived. Then, a relative distance is introduced to measure the value of each alternative. The suggested models are linear and despite weight restrictions are feasible. An example is presented for explaining the method and for comparing to the existing literature.
Abstract: The necessity of ever-increasing use of distributed
data in computer networks is obvious for all. One technique that is
performed on the distributed data for increasing of efficiency and
reliablity is data rplication. In this paper, after introducing this
technique and its advantages, we will examine some dynamic data
replication. We will examine their characteristies for some overus
scenario and the we will propose some suggestion for their
improvement.
Abstract: The health record in the Electronic Health Record
(EHR) system is more sensitive than demographic. It raises the
important issue for the EHR requirement in privacy, security, audit
trail, patient access, and archiving and data retention. The studies
about the EHR system security are deficient. The aim of this study is to
build a security environment for the EHR system by Integrating the
Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Audit Trail and Node Authentication
Security (ATNA) profile. The CDAs can be access in a secure EHR
environment.

In this study, a client application compatible with HL7 V3 for a project named SAĞLIKNET, aimed to build a National Health Information System by Turkey. Moreover, CDA conformance of this application will also be evaluated.
Abstract: Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a key role in soil
fertility, hydrology, contaminants control and acts as a sink or source
of terrestrial carbon content that can affect the concentration of
atmospheric CO2. SOC supports the sustainability and quality of
ecosystems, especially in semi-arid region. This study was
conducted to determine relative importance of 13 different
exploratory climatic, soil and geometric factors on the SOC contents
in one of the semiarid watershed zones in Iran. Two methods
canonical discriminate analysis (CDA) and feed-forward back
propagation neural networks were used to predict SOC. Stepwise
regression and sensitivity analysis were performed to identify
relative importance of exploratory variables. Results from sensitivity
analysis showed that 7-2-1 neural networks and 5 inputs in CDA
models output have highest predictive ability that explains %70 and
%65 of SOC variability. Since neural network models outperformed
CDA model, it should be preferred for estimating SOC.

Abstract: Testing accounts for the major percentage of technical
contribution in the software development process. Typically, it
consumes more than 50 percent of the total cost of developing a
piece of software. The selection of software tests is a very important
activity within this process to ensure the software reliability
requirements are met. Generally tests are run to achieve maximum
coverage of the software code and very little attention is given to the
achieved reliability of the software. Using an existing methodology,
this paper describes how to use Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) to
select unit tests based on their contribution to the reliability of the
module under consideration. In particular the work examines how the
approach can enhance test-first development by assessing the quality
of test suites resulting from this development methodology and
providing insight into additional tests that can significantly reduce
the achieved reliability. In this way the method can produce an
optimal selection of inputs and the order in which the tests are
executed to maximize the software reliability. To illustrate this
approach, a belief network is constructed for a modern software
system incorporating the expert opinion, expressed through
probabilities of the relative quality of the elements of the software,
and the potential effectiveness of the software tests. The steps
involved in constructing the Bayesian Network are explained as is a
method to allow for the test suite resulting from test-driven
development.
Abstract: Software developed for a specific customer under contract
typically undergoes a period of testing by the customer before
acceptance. This is known as user acceptance testing and the process
can reveal both defects in the system and requests for changes to
the product. This paper uses nonhomogeneous Poisson processes to
model a real user acceptance data set from a recently developed
system. In particular a split Poisson process is shown to provide an
excellent fit to the data. The paper explains how this model can be
used to aid the allocation of resources through the accurate prediction
of occurrences both during the acceptance testing phase and before
this activity begins.
