Abstract: In recent decades, flapping wing aerodynamics has attracted great interest. Understanding the physics of biological flyers such as birds and insects can help improve the performance of micro air vehicles. The present research focuses on the aerodynamics of insect-like flapping wing flight with the approach of numerical computation. Insect model of hawkmoth is adopted in the numerical study with rigid wing assumption currently. The numerical model integrates the computational fluid dynamics of the flow and active control of wing kinematics to achieve stable flight. The computation grid is a hybrid consisting of background Cartesian nodes and clouds of mesh-free grids around immersed boundaries. The generalized finite difference method is used in conjunction with single value decomposition (SVD-GFD) in computational fluid dynamics solver to study the dynamics of a free hovering hummingbird hawkmoth. The longitudinal dynamics of the hovering flight is governed by three control parameters, i.e., wing plane angle, mean positional angle and wing beating frequency. In present work, a PID controller works out the appropriate control parameters with the insect motion as input. The controller is adjusted to acquire desired maneuvering of the insect flight. The numerical scheme in present study is proven to be accurate and stable to simulate the flight of the hummingbird hawkmoth, which has relatively high Reynolds number. The PID controller is responsive to provide feedback to the wing kinematics during the hovering flight. The simulated hovering flight agrees well with the real insect flight. The present numerical study offers a promising route to investigate the free flight aerodynamics of insects, which could overcome some of the limitations of experiments.
Abstract: Air jet weaving is the most productive, but also the most energy consuming weaving method. Increasing energy costs and environmental impact are constantly a challenge for the manufacturers of weaving machines. Current technological developments concern with low energy costs, low environmental impact, high productivity, and constant product quality. The high degree of energy consumption of the method can be ascribed to the high need of compressed air. An energy efficiency method is applied to the air jet weaving technology. Such method identifies and classifies the main relevant energy consumers and processes from the exergy point of view and it leads to the identification of energy efficiency potentials during the weft insertion process. Starting from the design phase, energy efficiency is considered as the central requirement to be satisfied. The initial phase of the method consists of an analysis of the state of the art of the main weft insertion components in order to point out a prioritization of the high demanding energy components and processes. The identified major components are investigated to reduce the high demand of energy of the weft insertion process. During the interaction of the flow field coming from the relay nozzles within the profiled reed, only a minor part of the stream is really accelerating the weft yarn, hence resulting in large energy inefficiency. Different tools such as FEM analysis, CFD simulation models and experimental analysis are used in order to design a more energy efficient design of the involved components in the filling insertion. A different concept for the metal strip of the profiled reed is developed. The developed metal strip allows a reduction of the machine energy consumption. Based on a parametric and aerodynamic study, the designed reed transmits higher values of the flow power to the filling yarn. The innovative reed fulfills both the requirement of raising energy efficiency and the compliance with the weaving constraints.
Abstract: This paper presents a nonlinear differential model,
for a three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) suited
for control applications. It is based on a 8-dofs, lumped
parameters structural dynamics coupled with a quasi-steady sectional
aerodynamics. In particular, using the Euler-Lagrange Equation
(Energetic Variation approach), the authors derive, and successively
validate, such model. For the derivation of the aerodynamic model,
the Greenbergs theory, an extension of the theory proposed by
Theodorsen to the case of thin airfoils undergoing pulsating flows,
is used. Specifically, in this work, the authors restricted that theory
under the hypothesis of low perturbation reduced frequency k,
which causes the lift deficiency function C(k) to be real and equal
to 1. Furthermore, the expressions of the aerodynamic loads are
obtained using the quasi-steady strip theory (Hodges and Ormiston),
as a function of the chordwise and normal components of relative
velocity between flow and airfoil Ut, Up, their derivatives, and
section angular velocity ε˙. For the validation of the proposed model,
the authors carried out open and closed-loop simulations of a 5
MW HAWT, characterized by radius R =61.5 m and by mean chord
c = 3 m, with a nominal angular velocity Ωn = 1.266rad/sec.
The first analysis performed is the steady state solution, where
a uniform wind Vw = 11.4 m/s is considered and a collective
pitch angle θ = 0.88◦ is imposed. During this step, the authors
noticed that the proposed model is intrinsically periodic due to
the effect of the wind and of the gravitational force. In order
to reject this periodic trend in the model dynamics, the authors
propose a collective repetitive control algorithm coupled with a PD
controller. In particular, when the reference command to be tracked
and/or the disturbance to be rejected are periodic signals with a
fixed period, the repetitive control strategies can be applied due to
their high precision, simple implementation and little performance
dependency on system parameters. The functional scheme of a
repetitive controller is quite simple and, given a periodic reference
command, is composed of a control block Crc(s) usually added
to an existing feedback control system. The control block contains
and a free time-delay system eτs in a positive feedback loop, and a
low-pass filter q(s). It should be noticed that, while the time delay
term reduces the stability margin, on the other hand the low pass
filter is added to ensure stability. It is worth noting that, in this
work, the authors propose a phase shifting for the controller and
the delay system has been modified as e^(−(T−γk)), where T is the
period of the signal and γk is a phase shifting of k samples of the
same periodic signal. It should be noticed that, the phase shifting
technique is particularly useful in non-minimum phase systems, such
as flexible structures. In fact, using the phase shifting, the iterative
algorithm could reach the convergence also at high frequencies.
Notice that, in our case study, the shifting of k samples depends
both on the rotor angular velocity Ω and on the rotor azimuth
angle Ψ: we refer to this controller as a spatial repetitive controller.
The collective repetitive controller has also been coupled with a C(s) = PD(s), in order to dampen oscillations of the blades.
The performance of the spatial repetitive controller is compared
with an industrial PI controller. In particular, starting from wind
speed velocity Vw = 11.4 m/s the controller is asked to maintain the
nominal angular velocity Ωn = 1.266rad/s after an instantaneous
increase of wind speed (Vw = 15 m/s). Then, a purely periodic
external disturbance is introduced in order to stress the capabilities
of the repetitive controller. The results of the simulations show that,
contrary to a simple PI controller, the spatial repetitive-PD controller
has the capability to reject both external disturbances and periodic
trend in the model dynamics. Finally, the nominal value of the
angular velocity is reached, in accordance with results obtained with
commercial software for a turbine of the same type.
Abstract: This paper seeks the potentials of studying aerodynamic characteristics of inward cavities called dimples, as an alternative to the classical vortex generators. Increasing stalling angle is a greater challenge in wing design. But our examination is primarily focused on increasing lift. In this paper, enhancement of lift is mainly done by introduction of dimple or cavity in a wing. In general, aircraft performance can be enhanced by increasing aerodynamic efficiency that is lift to drag ratio of an aircraft wing. Efficiency improvement can be achieved by improving the maximum lift co-efficient or by reducing the drag co-efficient. At the time of landing aircraft, high angle of attack may lead to stalling of aircraft. To avoid this kind of situation, increase in the stalling angle is warranted. Hence, improved stalling characteristic is the best way to ease landing complexity. Computational analysis is done for the wing segment made of NACA 0012. Simulation is carried out for 30 m/s free stream velocity over plain airfoil and different types of cavities. The wing is modeled in CATIA V5R20 and analyses are carried out using ANSYS CFX. Triangle and square shapes are used as cavities for analysis. Simulations revealed that cavity placed on wing segment shows an increase of maximum lift co-efficient when compared to normal wing configuration. Flow separation is delayed at downstream of the wing by the presence of cavities up to a particular angle of attack.
Abstract: The triple diffusive boundary layer flow of nanofluid under the action of constant magnetic field over a non-linear stretching sheet has been investigated numerically. The model includes the effect of Brownian motion, thermophoresis, and cross-diffusion; slip mechanisms which are primarily responsible for the enhancement of the convective features of nanofluid. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations (by using group theory transformations) and solved numerically by using variational finite element method. The effects of various controlling parameters, such as the magnetic influence number, thermophoresis parameter, Brownian motion parameter, modified Dufour parameter, and Dufour solutal Lewis number, on the fluid flow as well as on heat and mass transfer coefficients (both of solute and nanofluid) are presented graphically and discussed quantitatively. The present study has industrial applications in aerodynamic extrusion of plastic sheets, coating and suspensions, melt spinning, hot rolling, wire drawing, glass-fibre production, and manufacture of polymer and rubber sheets, where the quality of the desired product depends on the stretching rate as well as external field including magnetic effects.
Abstract: The aerodynamic coefficients are important in the evaluation of an aircraft performance and stability-control characteristics. These coefficients also can be used in the automatic flight control systems and mathematical model of flight simulator. The study of the aerodynamic aspect of flying systems is a reserved domain and inaccessible for the developers. Doing tests in a wind tunnel to extract aerodynamic forces and moments requires a specific and expensive means. Besides, the glaring lack of published documentation in this field of study makes the aerodynamic coefficients determination complicated. This work is devoted to the identification of an aerodynamic model, by using an aircraft in virtual simulated environment. We deal with the identification of the system, we present an environment framework based on Software In the Loop (SIL) methodology and we use MicrosoftTM Flight Simulator (FS-2004) as the environment for plane simulation. We propose The Total Least Squares Estimation technique (TLSE) to identify the aerodynamic parameters, which are unknown, variable, classified and used in the expression of the piloting law. In this paper, we define each aerodynamic coefficient as the mean of its numerical values. All other variations are considered as modeling uncertainties that will be compensated by the robustness of the piloting control.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a piloting law based on the adaptive differentiators via high order sliding mode controller, by using an aircraft in virtual simulated environment. To deal with the design of an autopilot controller, we propose a framework based on Software in the Loop (SIL) methodology and we use MicrosoftTM Flight Simulator (FS-2004) as the environment for plane simulation. The aircraft dynamic model is nonlinear, Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) and tightly coupled. The nonlinearity resides in the dynamic equations and also in the aerodynamic coefficients' variability. In our case, two (02) aircrafts are used in the flight tests, the Zlin-142 and MQ-1 Predator. For both aircrafts and in a very low altitude flight, we send the piloting control inputs to the aircraft which has stalled due to a command disconnection. Then, we present the aircraft’s dynamic behavior analysis while reestablishing the command transmission. Finally, a comparative study between the two aircraft’s dynamic behaviors is presented.
Abstract: This paper presents the effect of installation of cylindrical external store on the performance, stability, control and handling qualities of light transport category aircraft. A pair of long cylindrical store was installed symmetrically on either side of the fuselage (port and starboard) ahead of the wing and below the fuselage bottom surface running below pilot and co-pilot window. The cylindrical store was installed as hanging from aircraft surface through specially designed brackets. The adjoining structure was sufficiently reinforced for bearing aerodynamic loads. The length to diameter ratio of long cylindrical store was ~20. Based on academic studies and flow simulation analysis, a considerable detrimental effect on single engine second segment climb performance was found which was later validated through extensive flight testing exercise. The methodology of progressive flight envelope opening was adopted. The certification was sought from Regional airworthiness authorities and for according approval.
Abstract: It is well known that secondary flow loses account about one third of the total loss in any axial turbine. Modern gas turbine height is smaller and have longer chord length, which might lead to increase in secondary flow. In order to improve the efficiency of the turbine, it is important to understand the behavior of secondary flow and device mechanisms to curtail these losses. The objective of the present work is to understand the effect of a stream wise end-wall fence on the aerodynamics of a linear turbine cascade. The study is carried out computationally by using commercial software ANSYS CFX. The effect of end-wall on the flow field are calculated based on RANS simulation by using SST transition turbulence model. Durham cascade which is similar to high-pressure axial flow turbine for simulation is used. The aim of fencing in blade passage is to get the maximum benefit from flow deviation and destroying the passage vortex in terms of loss reduction. It is observed that, for the present analysis, fence in the blade passage helps reducing the strength of horseshoe vortex and is capable of restraining the flow along the blade passage. Fence in the blade passage helps in reducing the under turning by 70 in comparison with base case. Fence on end-wall is effective in preventing the movement of pressure side leg of horseshoe vortex and helps in breaking the passage vortex. Computations are carried for different fence height whose curvature is different from the blade camber. The optimum fence geometry and location reduces the loss coefficient by 15.6% in comparison with base case.
Abstract: This paper presents an analytical study of Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (SUAV) dynamic stability derivatives. Simulating SUAV dynamics and analyzing its behavior at the earliest design stages is too important and more efficient design aspect. The approach suggested in this paper is using the wind tunnel experiment to collect the aerodynamic data and get the dynamic stability derivatives. AutoCAD Software was used to draw the case study (wildlife surveillance SUAV). The SUAV is scaled down to be 0.25% of the real SUAV dimensions and converted to a wind tunnel model. The model was tested in three different speeds for three different attitudes which are; pitch, roll and yaw. The wind tunnel results were then used to determine the case study stability derivative values, and hence it used to calculate the roots of the characteristic equation for both longitudinal and lateral motions. Finally, the characteristic equation roots were found and discussed in all possible cases.
Abstract: Automotive designers have been trying to use dimples to reduce drag in vehicles. In this work, a car model has been applied with dimple surface with a parameter called dimple ratio DR, the ratio between the depths of the half dimple over the print diameter of the dimple, has been introduced and numerically simulated via k-ε turbulence model to study the aerodynamics performance with the increasing depth of the dimples The Ahmed body car model with 25 degree slant angle is simulated with the DR of 0.05, 0.2, 0.3 0.4 and 0.5 at Reynolds number of 176387 based on the frontal area of the car model. The geometry of dimple changes the kinematics and dynamics of flow. Complex interaction between the turbulent fluctuating flow and the mean flow escalates the turbulence quantities. The maximum level of turbulent kinetic energy occurs at DR = 0.4. It can be concluded that the dimples have generated extra turbulence energy at the surface and as a result, the application of dimples manages to reduce the drag coefficient of the car model compared to the model with smooth surface.
Abstract: This paper details the progress made in the development of the different state-of-the-art aerodynamic tools for the analysis of vertical axis wind turbines including the flow simulation around the blade, viscous flow, stochastic wind, and dynamic stall effects. The paper highlights the capabilities of the developed wind turbine aerodynamic codes over the last thirty years which are currently being used in North America and Europe by Sandia Laboratories, FloWind, IMST Marseilles, and Hydro-Quebec among others. The aerodynamic codes developed at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Canada, represent valuable tools for simulating the flow around wind turbines including secondary effects. Comparison of theoretical results with experimental data have shown good agreement. The strength of the aerodynamic codes based on Double-Multiple Stream tube model (DMS) lies in its simplicity, accuracy, and ability to analyze secondary effects that interfere with wind turbine aerodynamic calculations.
Abstract: This paper presents results of numerical and experimental studies on a two-dimensional (2D) flapping elliptic airfoil in a forward flight condition at Reynolds number of 5000. The study is motivated from an earlier investigation which shows that the deterioration in thrust performance of a sinusoidal heaving and pitching 2D (NACA0012) airfoil at high flapping frequency can be recovered by changing the effective angle of attack profile to square wave, sawtooth, or cosine wave shape. To better understand why such modifications lead to superior thrust performance, we take a closer look at the transient aerodynamic force behavior of an airfoil when the effective angle of attack profile changes gradually from a generic smooth trapezoidal profile to a sinusoid shape by modifying the base length of the trapezoid. The choice of using a smooth trapezoidal profile is to avoid the infinite acceleration condition encountered in the square wave profile. Our results show that the enhancement in the time-averaged thrust performance at high flapping frequency can be attributed to the delay and reduction in the drag producing valley region in the transient thrust force coefficient when the effective angle of attack profile changes from sinusoidal to trapezoidal.
Abstract: The adjoint method has been used as a successful tool to
obtain sensitivity gradients in aerodynamic design and optimisation
for many years. This work presents an alternative approach to the
continuous adjoint formulation that enables one to compute gradients
of a given measure of merit with respect to control parameters other
than those pertaining to geometry. The procedure is then applied to
the steady 2–D compressible Euler and incompressible Navier–Stokes
flow equations. Finally, the results are compared with sensitivities
obtained by finite differences and theoretical values for validation.
Abstract: This paper presents the strategic development plan of
winged rockets WIRES (WInged REusable Sounding rocket) aiming
at unmanned suborbital winged rocket for demonstrating future fully
reusable space transportation technologies, such as aerodynamics,
Navigation, Guidance and Control (NGC), composite structure,
propulsion system, and cryogenic tanks etc., by universities in
collaboration with government and industries, as well as the past and
current flight test results.
Abstract: The source of the jet noise is generated by rocket exhaust plume during rocket engine testing. A domain decomposition approach is applied to the jet noise prediction in this paper. The aerodynamic noise coupling is based on the splitting into acoustic sources generation and sound propagation in separate physical domains. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to simulate the supersonic jet flow. Based on the simulation results of the flow-fields, the jet noise distribution of the sound pressure level is obtained by applying the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) acoustics equation and Fourier transform. The calculation results show that the complex structures of expansion waves, compression waves and the turbulent boundary layer could occur due to the strong interaction between the gas jet and the ambient air. In addition, the jet core region, the shock cell and the sound pressure level of the gas jet increase with the nozzle size increasing. Importantly, the numerical simulation results of the far-field sound are in good agreement with the experimental measurements in directivity.
Abstract: Open jet testing is a valuable testing technique which
provides the desired results with reasonable accuracy. It has been
used in past for the airships and now has recently been applied for the
hybrid ones, having more non-buoyant force coming from the wings,
empennage and the fuselage. In the present review work, an effort
has been done to review the challenges involved in open jet testing.
In order to shed light on the application of this technique, the
experimental results of two different configurations are presented.
Although, the aerodynamic results of such vehicles are unique to its
own design; however, it will provide a starting point for planning any
future testing. Few important testing areas which need more attention
are also highlighted. Most of the hybrid buoyant aerial vehicles are
unconventional in shape and there experimental data is generated,
which is unique to its own design.
Abstract: This paper presents the performance characteristics of
Darrieus-type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) with NACA airfoil
blades. The performance of Darrieus-type VAWT can be
characterized by torque and power. There are various parameters
affecting the performance such as chord length, helical angle, pitch
angle and rotor diameter. To estimate the optimum shape of Darrieustype
wind turbine in accordance with various design parameters, we
examined aerodynamic characteristics and separated flow occurring
in the vicinity of blade, interaction between flow and blade, and
torque and power characteristics derived from it. For flow analysis,
flow variations were investigated based on the unsteady RANS
(Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) equation. Sliding mesh algorithm
was employed in order to consider rotational effect of blade. To
obtain more realistic results we conducted experiment and numerical
analysis at the same time for three-dimensional shape. In addition,
several parameters (chord length, rotor diameter, pitch angle, and
helical angle) were considered to find out optimum shape design and
characteristics of interaction with ambient flow. Since the NACA
airfoil used in this study showed significant changes in magnitude of
lift and drag depending on an angle of attack, the rotor with low drag,
long cord length and short diameter shows high power coefficient in
low tip speed ratio (TSR) range. On the contrary, in high TSR range,
drag becomes high. Hence, the short-chord and long-diameter rotor
produces high power coefficient. When a pitch angle at which airfoil
directs toward inside equals to -2° and helical angle equals to 0°,
Darrieus-type VAWT generates maximum power.
Abstract: The simulation in wind tunnel is used thoroughly to model real situations of drainages of air. Besides the automotive industry, a great number of applications can be numbered: dispersion of pollutant, studies of pedestrians’ comfort, and dispersion of particles. This work had the objective of visualizing the characteristics aerodynamics of two automobiles in different ways. To accomplish that drainage of air a fan that generated a speed exists (measured with anemometer of hot thread) of 4,1m/s and 4,95m/s. To visualize the path of the air through the cars, in the wind tunnel, smoke was used, obtained with it burns of vegetable oil. For “to do smoke” vegetable oil was used, that was burned for a tension of 20V generated by a thread of 2,5mm. The cars were placed inside of the wind tunnel with the drainage of “air-smoke” and photographed, registering like this the path lines around them, in the 3 different speeds.
Abstract: The study of the aerodynamics related to the
improvement in the acting of airplanes and automobiles with the
objective of being reduced the effect of the attrition of the air on
structures, providing larger speeds and smaller consumption of fuel.
The application of the knowledge of the aerodynamics not more
limits to the aeronautical and automobile industries. Therefore, this
research aims to design and construction of a wind tunnel to perform
aerodynamic analysis in bodies of cars, seeking greater efficiency.

greater efficiency. For this, a methodology for wind tunnel type
selection is designed to be built, taking into account the various
existing configurations in which chose to build an open circuit tunnel,
due to the lower complexity of construction and installation;
operational simplicity and low cost. The guidelines for the project
were teaching: the layer that limits study and analyze specimens with
different geometries. For the variation of pressure in the test, section
of a switched gauge used a pitot tube. Thus, it was possible to obtain
quantitative and qualitative results, which proved to be satisfactory.
