Abstract: Modeling the behavior of the dialogue management in
the design of a spoken dialogue system using statistical methodologies
is currently a growing research area. This paper presents a work
on developing an adaptive learning approach to optimize dialogue
strategy. At the core of our system is a method formalizing dialogue
management as a sequential decision making under uncertainty whose
underlying probabilistic structure has a Markov Chain. Researchers
have mostly focused on model-free algorithms for automating the
design of dialogue management using machine learning techniques
such as reinforcement learning. But in model-free algorithms there
exist a dilemma in engaging the type of exploration versus exploitation.
Hence we present a model-based online policy learning
algorithm using interconnected learning automata for optimizing
dialogue strategy. The proposed algorithm is capable of deriving
an optimal policy that prescribes what action should be taken in
various states of conversation so as to maximize the expected total
reward to attain the goal and incorporates good exploration and
exploitation in its updates to improve the naturalness of humancomputer
interaction. We test the proposed approach using the most
sophisticated evaluation framework PARADISE for accessing to the
railway information system.
Abstract: For today-s and future wireless communications applications,
more and more data traffic has to be transmitted with
growing speed and quality demands. The analog front-end of any
mobile device has to cope with very hard specifications regardless
which transmission standard has to be supported. State-of-the-art
analog front-end implementations are reaching the limit of technical
feasibility. For that reason, alternative front-end architectures could
support a continuing development of mobile communications e.g.,
six-port-based front-ends [1], [2].
In this article we propose an analog front-end with high intermediate
frequency and which utilizes additive mixing instead
of multiplicative mixing. The system architecture is presented and
several spurious effects as well as their influence on the system
dimensioning are discussed. Furthermore, several issues concerning
the technical feasibility are provided and some simulation results
are discussed which show the principle functionality of the proposed
superposition heterodyne receiver.
Abstract: It-s difficult for China-s current land transfer
institutions limited to county-wide to solve the contradiction between
urban-rural development and construction land shortage. On the basis of analyzing China-s construction land transfer system, and evaluation
toward Transfer of development rights (TDR) practices in Anhui and
Chongqing, the passage proposes: (1) we should establish a multi-level
land indicators trade market under the guidance of regional spatial
objectives, and allow land transfer paid across cities and counties
within a specific area following the regulation of both government and
market; (2) it would be better to combine organically the policy ntentions of land plan, regional plan, urban plan and economic plan, and link them with land indicators transfer to promote a wider range of
urban-rural balance and regional coordination.
Abstract: In this paper, for the understanding of the phytoplankton dynamics in marine ecosystem, a susceptible and an infected class of phytoplankton population is considered in spatiotemporal domain.
Here, the susceptible phytoplankton is growing logistically and the
growth of infected phytoplankton is due to the instantaneous Holling
type-II infection response function. The dynamics are studied in terms of the local and global stabilities for the system and further
explore the possibility of Hopf -bifurcation, taking the half saturation period as (i.e., ) the bifurcation parameter in temporal domain.
It is also observe that the reaction diffusion system exhibits spatiotemporal
chaos and pattern formation in phytoplankton dynamics,
which is particularly important role play for the spatially extended phytoplankton system. Also the effect of the diffusion coefficient
on the spatial system for both one and two dimensional case is obtained. Furthermore, we explore the higher-order stability analysis
of the spatial phytoplankton system for both linear and no-linear system. Finally, few numerical simulations are carried out for pattern
formation.
Abstract: Culture and family structure provide a sense security.
Further, the chrono, macro and micro contexts of development
influence developmental transitions and timetable particularly owing
to variations in the macrosystem associated with non normative life
events like migration. Migration threatens family links, security and
attachment bonds. Rising migratory trends have prompted an
increased interest in migration consequences on familial bonds,
developmental autonomy, socialization process, and sense of
security. This paper takes a narrative approach and applies the
attachment paradigm from a lifespan perspective, to examine the
settlement experiences of an India-born migrant student in Sydney,
Australia. It focuses on her quest to preserve family ties; her remote
secure base; her continual struggle to balance dependency and
autonomy, a major developmental milestone. As positional parental
power is culturally more potent in the Indian society, the paper
therefore raises some important concerns related to cultural
expectations, adaptation, acculturative stress and sense of security.
Abstract: The Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming
paradigm offers ease-of-use in expressing parallelism
through a global shared address space while emphasizing performance
by providing locality awareness through the partitioning of
this address space. Therefore, the interest in PGAS programming
languages is growing and many new languages have emerged and
are becoming ubiquitously available on nearly all modern parallel
architectures. Recently, new parallel machines with multiple cores
are designed for targeting high performance applications. Most of the
efforts have gone into benchmarking but there are a few examples of
real high performance applications running on multicore machines.
In this paper, we present and evaluate a parallelization technique
for implementing a local DNA sequence alignment algorithm using
a PGAS based language, UPC (Unified Parallel C) on a chip
multithreading architecture, the UltraSPARC T1.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of
cognitive decision effort in recommendation system, combined with
indicators "information quality" and "service quality" from IS success
model to exam the awareness of the user for the "recommended system
performance". A total of 411 internet user answered a questionnaire
assessing their attention of use and satisfaction of recommendation
system in internet book store. Quantitative result indicates following
research results. First, information quality of recommended system
has obvious influence in consumer shopping decision-making process,
and the attitude to use the system. Second, in the process of consumer's
shopping decision-making, the recommendation system has no
significant influence for consumers to pay lower cognitive
decision-making effort. Third, e-commerce platform provides
recommendations and information is necessary, but the quality of
information on user needs must be considered, or they will be other
competitors offer homogeneous services replaced.
Abstract: The usefulness of weaning foods to meet the nutrient
needs of children is well recognized, and most of them are precooked
roller dried mixtures of cereal and/or legume flours which posses a
high viscosity and bulk when reconstituted. The objective of this study
was to formulate composite weaning foods using cereals, malted
legumes and vegetable powders and analyze them for nutrients,
functional properties and sensory attributes. Selected legumes (green
gram and lentil) were germinated, dried and dehulled. Roasted wheat,
rice, carrot powder and skim milk powder also were used. All the
ingredients were mixed in different proportions to get four
formulations, made into 30% slurry and dried in roller drier. The
products were analyzed for proximate principles, mineral content,
functional and sensory qualities. The results of analysis showed
following range of constituents per 100g of formulations on dry
weight basis, protein, 18.1-18.9 g ; fat, 0.78-1.36 g ; iron, 5.09-6.53
mg; calcium, 265-310 mg. The lowest water absorption capacity was
in case of wheat green gram based and the highest was in rice lentil
based sample. Overall sensory qualities of all foods were graded as
“good" and “very good" with no significant differences. The results
confirm that formulated weaning foods were nutritionally superior,
functionally appropriate and organoleptically acceptable.
Abstract: Nowadays, efficiency, effectiveness and economy are regarded as the main objectives of managers and the secret of the continuity of an organization in competing economy. In such competing settings, it is essential that the management of an organization has not been neglected and been obliged to identify quickly the opportunities for improving the operation of organization and remove the shortcomings of their managed system in order to use the opportunities for development. Operational auditing is a useful tool for system adjustment and leading an organization toward its objectives. Operational auditing is indeed a viewpoint which identifies the causes of insufficiencies, weaknesses and deficiencies of system and plans to eliminate them. Operational auditing is useful in the effectiveness and optimization of executive managers- decisions and increasing the efficiency and economy of their performance in the future and prevents the waste and incorrect use of resources. Evidence shows that operational auditing is used at a limited level in Iran. This matter raises some questions like the following ones in the minds. Why do a limited number of corporations use operational auditing? Which factors can guarantee its full implementation? What obstacles are there in its implementation? The purpose of this article is to determine executive objectives, the operation domain of operational auditing, the components of operational auditing and the executive obstacles to operational auditing in Iran.
Abstract: This study investigated the presence of polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of the Musa Bay
(around the PETZONE coastal area) from Feb 2010 to Jun 2010.
Concentrations of PAHs recorded in the Musa Bay sediments ranged
from 537.89 to 26,659.06 ng/g dry weight with a mean value of
3990.74 ng/g. the highest concentration of PAHs was observed at
station 4, which is located near the aromatic outlet of Imam
Khomeini petrochemical company (station 4: BI-PC Aromatic
effluent outlet) in which its concentration level was more than the
NOAA sediment quality guideline value (ERL= 4022 ng/g dry
weight). Owing to the concentration of PAHs in the study area, its
concentration level was still meet the NOAA sediment quality
guideline value (ERL: 4022 ng/g dry weight); however, according to
the PELq factor, slightly adverse biological effects are associated
with the exposure to PAHs levels in the study area (0.1< PELq= 0.24
> 0.5).
Abstract: Recent research on seeds of bio-diesel plants like
Jatropha curcas, constituting 40-50% bio-crude oil indicates its
potential as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional
sources of energy. Also, limited studies on utilization of de-oiled cake
have revealed that Jatropha bio-waste has good potential to be used as
organic fertilizers produced via aerobic and anaerobic treatment.
However, their commercial exploitation has not yet been possible. The
present study aims at developing appropriate bio-processes and
formulations utilizing Jatropha seed cake as organic fertilizer, for
improving the growth of Polianthes tuberose L. (Tuberose). Pot
experiments were carried out by growing tuberose plants on soil
treated with composted formulations of Jatropha de-oiled cake, Farm
Yard Manure (FYM) and inorganic fertilizers were also blended in
soil. The treatment was carried out through soil amendment as well as
foliar spray. The growth and morphological parameters were
monitored for entire crop cycle.
The growth Length and number of leaves, spike length, rachis
length, number of bulb per plant and earliness of sprouting of bulb and
yield enhancement were comparable to that achieved under inorganic
fertilizer. Furthermore, performance of inorganic fertilizer also showed
an improvement when blended with composted bio-waste. These
findings would open new avenues for Jatropha based bio-wastes to be
composted and used as organic fertilizers for commercial floriculture.
Abstract: Mankind has entered into an extremely complex and
controversial stage of its development: the world is simultaneously
organized and chaoticized, globalized and localized, combined and
split. Analysts point out that globalization as a process of
strengthening economic, cultural, financial and other ties of states
cause many problems. In the economic sphere, it creates the danger
of growing gap between the states, in the sphere of politics it leads to
the weakening of political power and influence of nation-states.
Abstract: Leave of absence is important in maintaining a good
status of human resource quality. Allowing the employees temporarily
free from the routine assignments can vitalize the workers- morality
and productivity. This is particularly critical to secure a satisfactory
service quality for healthcare professionals of which were typically
featured with labor intensive and complicated works to perform. As
one of the veteran hospitals that were found and operated by the
Veteran Department of Taiwan, the nursing staff of the case hospital
was squeezed to an extreme minimum level under the pressure of a
tight budgeting. Leave of absence on schedule became extremely
difficult, especially for the intensive care units (ICU), in which
required close monitoring over the cared patients, and that had more
easily driven the ICU nurses nervous. Even worse, the deferred leaves
were more than 10 days at any time in the ICU because of a fluctuating
occupancy. As a result, these had brought a bad setback to this
particular nursing team, and consequently defeated the job
performance and service quality. To solve this problem and
accordingly to strengthen their morality, a project team was organized
across different departments specific for this. Sufficient information
regarding jobs and positions requirements, labor resources, and actual
working hours in detail were collected and analyzed in the team
meetings. Several alternatives were finalized. These included job
rotating, job combination, leave on impromptu and cross-departmental
redeployment. Consequently, the deferred leave days sharply reduced
70% to a level of 3 or less days. This improvement had not only
provided good shelter for the ICU nurses that improved their job
performance and patient safety but also encouraged the nurses active
participating of a project and learned the skills of solving problems
with colleagues.
Abstract: An electric power system includes a generating, a
transmission, a distribution, and consumers subsystems. An electrical
power network in Tanzania keeps growing larger by the day and
become more complex so that, most utilities have long wished for
real-time monitoring and remote control of electrical power system
elements such as substations, intelligent devices, power lines,
capacitor banks, feeder switches, fault analyzers and other physical
facilities. In this paper, the concept of automation of management of
power systems from generation level to end user levels was
determined by using Power System Simulator for Engineering
(PSS/E) version 30.3.2.
Abstract: Through a proper analysis of residual strain and stress
distributions obtained at the surface of high speed milled specimens
of AA 6082–T6 aluminium alloy, the performance of an improved
indentation method is evaluated. This method integrates a special
device of indentation to a universal measuring machine. The
mentioned device allows introducing elongated indents allowing to
diminish the absolute error of measurement. It must be noted that the
present method offers the great advantage of avoiding both the
specific equipment and highly qualified personnel, and their inherent
high costs. In this work, the cutting tool geometry and high speed
parameters are selected to introduce reduced plastic damage.
Through the variation of the depth of cut, the stability of the shapes
adopted by the residual strain and stress distributions is evaluated.
The results show that the strain and stress distributions remain
unchanged, compressive and small. Moreover, these distributions
reveal a similar asymmetry when the gradients corresponding to
conventional and climb cutting zones are compared.
Abstract: A pilot project was carried out in 2007 by the senior
students of Cyprus International University, aiming to minimize the
total cost of waste collection in Northern Cyprus. Many developed
and developing countries have cut their transportation costs – which
lies between 30-40% – down at a rate of 40% percent, by
implementing network models for their route assignments.
Accordingly, a network model was implemented at Göçmenköy
district, to optimize and standardize waste collection works. The
work environment of the employees were also redesigned to provide
maximum ergonomy and to increase productivity, efficiency and
safety. Following the collection of the required data including waste
densities, lengths of roads and population, a model was constructed
to allocate the optimal route assignment for the waste collection
trucks at Göçmenköy district.
Abstract: This paper explores the scalability issues associated
with solving the Named Entity Recognition (NER) problem using
Support Vector Machines (SVM) and high-dimensional features. The
performance results of a set of experiments conducted using binary
and multi-class SVM with increasing training data sizes are
examined. The NER domain chosen for these experiments is the
biomedical publications domain, especially selected due to its
importance and inherent challenges. A simple machine learning
approach is used that eliminates prior language knowledge such as
part-of-speech or noun phrase tagging thereby allowing for its
applicability across languages. No domain-specific knowledge is
included. The accuracy measures achieved are comparable to those
obtained using more complex approaches, which constitutes a
motivation to investigate ways to improve the scalability of multiclass
SVM in order to make the solution more practical and useable.
Improving training time of multi-class SVM would make support
vector machines a more viable and practical machine learning
solution for real-world problems with large datasets. An initial
prototype results in great improvement of the training time at the
expense of memory requirements.
Abstract: This paper presents a research agenda on the SCOR
model adaptation. SCOR model is designated to measure supply
chain performance and logistics impact across the boundaries of
individual organizations. It is at its growing stage of its life cycle and
is enjoying the leverage of becoming the industry standard. The
SCOR model has been developed and used widely in developed
countries context. This research focuses on the SCOR model
adaptation for the manufacturing industry in developing countries.
With a necessary understanding of the characteristics, difficulties and
problems of the manufacturing industry in developing countries-
supply chain; consequently, we will try to designs an adapted model
with its building blocks: business process model, performance
measures and best practices.
Abstract: This paper is focused on issues of process modeling
and two model based control strategies of a fed-batch sugar
crystallization process applying the concept of artificial neural
networks (ANNs). The control objective is to force the operation into
following optimal supersaturation trajectory. It is achieved by
manipulating the feed flow rate of sugar liquor/syrup, considered as
the control input. The control task is rather challenging due to the
strong nonlinearity of the process dynamics and variations in the
crystallization kinetics. Two control alternatives are considered –
model predictive control (MPC) and feedback linearizing control
(FLC). Adequate ANN process models are first built as part of the
controller structures. MPC algorithm outperforms the FLC approach
with respect to satisfactory reference tracking and smooth control
action. However, the MPC is computationally much more involved
since it requires an online numerical optimization, while for the FLC
an analytical control solution was determined.
Abstract: Mostly the real life signals are time varying in nature. For proper characterization of such signals, time-frequency representation is required. The STFT (short-time Fourier transform) is a classical tool used for this purpose. The limitation of the STFT is its fixed time-frequency resolution. Thus, an enhanced version of the STFT, which is based on the cross-level sampling, is devised. It can adapt the sampling frequency and the window function length by following the input signal local variations. Therefore, it provides an adaptive resolution time-frequency representation of the input. The computational complexity of the proposed STFT is deduced and compared to the classical one. The results show a significant gain of the computational efficiency and hence of the processing power. The processing error of the proposed technique is also discussed.
