Abstract: Background: To improve the delivery of paediatric
healthcare in low resource settings, Community Health Workers
(CHW) have been provided with a paper-based set of protocols
known as Community Case Management (CCM). Yet research has
shown that CHW adherence to CCM guidelines is poor, ultimately
impacting health service delivery. Digitising the CCM guidelines via
mobile technology is argued in extant literature to improve CHW
adherence. However, little research exist which outlines how (a) this
process can be digitised and (b) adherence could be improved as a
result. Aim: To explore how an electronic mobile version of CCM
(eCCM) can overcome issues associated with the paper-based CCM
protocol (inadequate adherence to guidelines) vis-à-vis service
blueprinting. This service blueprint will outline how (a) the CCM
process can be digitised using mobile Clinical Decision Support
Systems software to support clinical decision-making and (b)
adherence can be improved as a result. Method: Development of a
single service blueprint for a standalone application which visually
depicts the service processes (eCCM) when supporting the CHWs,
using an application known as Supporting LIFE (SL eCCM app) as
an exemplar. Results: A service blueprint is developed which
illustrates how the SL eCCM app can be utilised by CHWs to assist
with the delivery of healthcare services to children. Leveraging
smartphone technologies can (a) provide CHWs with just-in-time
data to assist with their decision making at the point-of-care and (b)
improve CHW adherence to CCM guidelines. Conclusions: The
development of the eCCM opens up opportunities for the CHWs to
leverage the inherent benefit of mobile devices to assist them with
health service delivery in rural settings. To ensure that benefits are
achieved, it is imperative to comprehend the functionality and form
of the eCCM service process. By creating such a service blueprint for
an eCCM approach, CHWs are provided with a clear picture
regarding the role of the eCCM solution, often resulting in buy-in
from the end-users.
Abstract: Lateral torsional buckling is a global buckling mode
which should be considered in design of slender structural members
under flexure about their strong axis. It is possible to compute the
load which causes lateral torsional buckling of a beam by finite
element analysis, however, closed form equations are needed in
engineering practice for calculation ease which can be obtained by
using energy method. In lateral torsional buckling applications of
energy method, a proper function for the critical lateral torsional
buckling mode should be chosen which can be thought as the
variation of twisting angle along the buckled beam. Accuracy of the
results depends on how close is the chosen function to the exact
mode. Since critical lateral torsional buckling mode of the cantilever
I-beams varies due to material properties, section properties and
loading case, the hardest step is to determine a proper mode function
in application of energy method. This paper presents an approximate function for critical lateral
torsional buckling mode of doubly symmetric cantilever I-beams.
Coefficient matrices are calculated for concentrated load at free end,
uniformly distributed load and constant moment along the beam
cases. Critical lateral torsional buckling modes obtained by presented
function and exact solutions are compared. It is found that the modes
obtained by presented function coincide with differential equation
solutions for considered loading cases.
Abstract: Presently various computational techniques are used
in modeling and analyzing environmental engineering data. In the
present study, an intra-comparison of polynomial and radial basis
kernel functions based on Support Vector Regression and, in turn, an
inter-comparison with Multi Linear Regression has been attempted in
modeling mass transfer capacity of vertical (θ = 90O) and inclined (θ
multiple plunging jets (varying from 1 to 16 numbers). The data set
used in this study consists of four input parameters with a total of
eighty eight cases, forty four each for vertical and inclined multiple
plunging jets. For testing, tenfold cross validation was used.
Correlation coefficient values of 0.971 and 0.981 along with
corresponding root mean square error values of 0.0025 and 0.0020
were achieved by using polynomial and radial basis kernel functions
based Support Vector Regression respectively. An intra-comparison
suggests improved performance by radial basis function in
comparison to polynomial kernel based Support Vector Regression.
Further, an inter-comparison with Multi Linear Regression
(correlation coefficient = 0.973 and root mean square error = 0.0024)
reveals that radial basis kernel functions based Support Vector
Regression performs better in modeling and estimating mass transfer
by multiple plunging jets.
Abstract: Annihilations, phase shifts, scattering lengths and
elastic cross sections of low energy positrons scattering from
magnesium atoms were studied using the least-squares variational
method (LSVM). The possibility of positron binding to the
magnesium atoms is investigated. A trial wave function is suggested
to represent e+-Mg elastic scattering and scattering parameters were
derived to estimate the binding energy and annihilation rates. The
trial function is taken to depend on several adjustable parameters, and
is improved iteratively by increasing the number of terms. The
present results have the same behavior as reported semi-empirical,
theoretical and experimental results. Especially, the estimated
positive scattering length supports the possibility of positronmagnesium
bound state system that was confirmed in previous
experimental and theoretical work.
Abstract: One of the challenges that higher education faces is to
find how to approach the sustainability in an inclusive way to the
student within all the different academic areas, how to move the
sustainable development from the abstract field to the operational
field. This research comes from the ecoliteracy and the pedagogical
praxis as tools for rebuilding the teaching processes inside of
universities. The purpose is to determine and describe which are the
factors involved in the process of learning particularly in the
Greenhouse-School Siembra UV. In the Greenhouse-School Siembra UV, of the University of
Veracruz, are cultivated vegetables, medicinal plants and small
cornfields under the usage of eco-technologies such as hydroponics,
Wickingbed and Hugelkultur, which main purpose is the saving of
space, labor and natural resources, as well as function as agricultural
production alternatives in the urban and periurban zones. The sample was formed with students from different academic
areas and who are actively involved in the greenhouse, as well as
institutes from the University of Veracruz and governmental and nongovernmental
departments. This project comes from a pedagogic praxis approach, from filling
the needs that the different professional profiles of the university
students have. All this with the purpose of generate a pragmatic
dialogue with the sustainability. It also comes from the necessity to
understand the factors that intervene in the students’ praxis. In this
manner is how the students are the fundamental unit in the sphere of
sustainability. As a result, it is observed that those University of Veracruz
students who are involved in the Greenhouse-school, Siembra UV,
have enriched in different levels the sense of urban and periurban
agriculture because of the diverse academic approaches they have
and the interaction between them. It is concluded that the ecotechnologies
act as fundamental tools for ecoliteracy in society,
where it is strengthen the nutritional and food security from a
sustainable development approach.
Abstract: To study the dynamic mechanics response of asphalt
pavement under the temperature load and vehicle loading, asphalt
pavement was regarded as multilayered elastic half-space system, and
theory analysis was conducted by regarding dynamic modulus of
asphalt mixture as the parameter. Firstly, based on the dynamic
modulus test of asphalt mixture, function relationship between the
dynamic modulus of representative asphalt mixture and temperature
was obtained. In addition, the analytical solution for thermal stress in
single layer was derived by using Laplace integral transformation and
Hankel integral transformation respectively by using thermal
equations of equilibrium. The analytical solution of calculation model
of thermal stress in asphalt pavement was derived by transfer matrix
of thermal stress in multilayer elastic system. Finally, the variation of
thermal stress in pavement structure was analyzed. The result shows
that there is obvious difference between the thermal stress based on
dynamic modulus and the solution based on static modulus. So the
dynamic change of parameter in asphalt mixture should be taken into
consideration when theoretical analysis is taken out.
Abstract: Manufacturing tolerancing is intended to determine
the intermediate geometrical and dimensional states of the part during
its manufacturing process. These manufacturing dimensions also
serve to satisfy not only the functional requirements given in the
definition drawing, but also the manufacturing constraints, for
example geometrical defects of the machine, vibration and the wear
of the cutting tool. The choice of positioning has an important influence on the cost
and quality of manufacture. To avoid this problem, a two-step
approach has been developed. The first step is dedicated to the
determination of the optimum position. As for the second step, a
study was carried out for the tightening effect on the tolerance
interval.
Abstract: The traditional rhythms of the West African country
of Guinea have played a centuries-long role in defining the different
people groups that make up the country. Throughout their history,
before and since colonization by the French, the different ethnicities
have used their traditional music as a distinct part of their historical
identities. That is starting to change. Guinea is an impoverished
nation created in the early twentieth-century with little regard for the
history and cultures of the people who were included. The traditional
rhythms of the different people groups and their heritages have
remained. Fifteen individual traditional Guinean rhythms were
chosen to represent popular rhythms from the four geographical
regions of Guinea. Each rhythm was traced back to its native village
and video recorded on-site by as many different local performing
groups as could be located. The cyclical patterns rhythms were
transcribed via a circular, spatial design and then copied into a box
notation system where sounds happening at the same time could be
studied. These rhythms were analyzed for their consistency-overperformance
in a Fundamental Rhythm Pattern analysis so rhythms
could be compared for how they are changing through different
performances. The analysis showed that the traditional rhythm
performances of the Middle and Forest Guinea regions were the most
cohesive and showed the least evidence of change between
performances. The role of music in each of these regions is both
limited and focused. The Coastal and High Guinea regions have
much in common historically through their ethnic history and
modern-day trade connections, but the rhythm performances seem to
be less consistent and demonstrate more changes in how they are
performed today. In each of these regions the role and usage of music
is much freer and wide-spread. In spite of advances being made as a
country, different ethnic groups still frequently only respond and
participate (dance and sing) to the music of their native ethnicity.
There is some evidence that this self-imposed musical barrier is
beginning to change and evolve, partially through the development of
better roads, more access to electricity and technology, the nationwide
Ebola health crisis, and a growing self-identification as a
unified nation.
Abstract: The use of wireless technology in industrial networks
has gained vast attraction in recent years. In this paper, we have
thoroughly analyzed the effect of contention window (CW) size on
the performance of IEEE 802.11-based industrial wireless networks
(IWN), from delay and reliability perspective. Results show that the
default values of CWmin, CWmax, and retry limit (RL) are far from
the optimum performance due to the industrial application
characteristics, including short packet and noisy environment. In this
paper, an adaptive CW algorithm (payload-dependent) has been
proposed to minimize the average delay. Finally a simple, but
effective CW and RL setting has been proposed for industrial
applications which outperforms the minimum-average-delay solution
from maximum delay and jitter perspective, at the cost of a little
higher average delay. Simulation results show an improvement of up
to 20%, 25%, and 30% in average delay, maximum delay and jitter
respectively.
Abstract: Here, we have shown the reaction of [Cr(ArN(CH2)3NAr)2Cl2] (1) where (Ar = 2,6-Pri
2C6H3) and in presence of NaCp (2) (Cp= C5H5 = cyclopentadien), with a center
coordination η5 interaction between Cp as co-ligand and chromium
metal center, for optimization we used density functional theory
(DFT), under methods, explicitly including electrons correlations, for
the final calculations as MB3LYP (Becke) (Lee–Yang–Parr) level of
theory we used to obtain more exact results. This complex was
calculated as electronic energy for molecular system, because the
calculation accounting all electrons correlations interactions. The
optimised of [Cr(ArN(CH2)3NAr)2(η5-Cp)] (Ar = 2,6-Pri2C6H3 and Cp = C5H5) was found to be thermally stable. By using Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model, as a basis of the molecular orbital (MO) analysis
and showed the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and
lowest occupied molecular orbital LUMO.
Abstract: The critical concern of satellite operations is to ensure
the health and safety of satellites. The worst case in this perspective
is probably the loss of a mission, but the more common interruption
of satellite functionality can result in compromised mission
objectives. All the data acquiring from the spacecraft are known as
Telemetry (TM), which contains the wealth information related to the
health of all its subsystems. Each single item of information is
contained in a telemetry parameter, which represents a time-variant
property (i.e. a status or a measurement) to be checked. As a
consequence, there is a continuous improvement of TM monitoring
systems to reduce the time required to respond to changes in a
satellite's state of health. A fast conception of the current state of the
satellite is thus very important to respond to occurring failures.
Statistical multivariate latent techniques are one of the vital learning
tools that are used to tackle the problem above coherently.
Information extraction from such rich data sources using advanced
statistical methodologies is a challenging task due to the massive
volume of data. To solve this problem, in this paper, we present a
proposed unsupervised learning algorithm based on Principle
Component Analysis (PCA) technique. The algorithm is particularly
applied on an actual remote sensing spacecraft. Data from the
Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) was acquired
under two operation conditions: normal and faulty states. The models
were built and tested under these conditions, and the results show that
the algorithm could successfully differentiate between these
operations conditions. Furthermore, the algorithm provides
competent information in prediction as well as adding more insight
and physical interpretation to the ADCS operation.
Abstract: Hydrogels are three-dimensional, hydrophilic,
polymeric networks composed of homopolymers or copolymers and
are insoluble in water due to the presence of chemical or physical
cross-links. When hydrogels come in contact with aqueous solutions,
they can effectively sorb and retain the dissolved substances,
depending on the nature of the monomeric units comprising the
hydrogel. For this reason, hydrogels have been proposed in several
studies as water purification agents. At the present work anionic
hydrogels bearing negatively charged –COO- groups were prepared
and investigated. These gels are based on sodium acrylate (ANa),
either homopolymerized (poly(sodiumacrylate), PANa) or
copolymerized (P(DMAM-co-ANa)) with N,N Dimethylacrylamide
(DMAM). The hydrogels were used to extract some model organic
dyes from water. It is found that cationic dyes are strongly sorbed and
retained by the hydrogels, while sorption of anionic dyes was
negligible. In all cases it was found that both maximum sorption
capacity and equilibrium binding constant varied from one dye to the
other depending on the chemical structure of the dye, the presence of
functional chemical groups and the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance.
Finally, the nonionic hydrogel of the homopolymer poly(N,Ndimethylacrylamide),
PDMAM, was also used for reasons of
comparison.
Abstract: In this paper, the results of Kano from one dimensional
cosine and sine series are extended to two dimensional cosine and sine
series. To extend these results, some classes of coefficient sequences
such as class of semi convexity and class R are extended from
one dimension to two dimensions. Further, the function f(x, y) is
two dimensional Fourier Cosine and Sine series or equivalently it
represents an integrable function or not, has been studied. Moreover,
some results are obtained which are generalization of Moricz’s
results.
Abstract: This study, tries to suggest a design method based on
displacement using finite difference numerical modeling in
reinforcing soil retaining wall with steel strip. In this case, dynamic
loading characteristics such as duration, frequency, peak ground
acceleration, geometrical characteristics of reinforced soil structure
and type of the site are considered to correct the pseudo static method
and finally introduce the pseudo static coefficient as a function of
seismic performance level and peak ground acceleration. For this
purpose, the influence of dynamic loading characteristics,
reinforcement length, height of reinforced system and type of the site
are investigated on seismic behavior of reinforcing soil retaining wall
with steel strip. Numerical results illustrate that the seismic response
of this type of wall is highly dependent to cumulative absolute
velocity, maximum acceleration, and height and reinforcement length
so that the reinforcement length can be introduced as the main factor
in shape of failure. Considering the loading parameters, geometric parameters of the
wall and type of the site showed that the used method in this study
leads to efficient designs in comparison with other methods, which
are usually based on limit-equilibrium concept. The outputs show the
over-estimation of equilibrium design methods in comparison with
proposed displacement based methods here.
Abstract: This paper presents an extensive review of literature
relevant to the modelling techniques adopted in sediment yield and
hydrological modelling. Several studies relating to sediment yield are
discussed. Many research areas of sedimentation in rivers, runoff and
reservoirs are presented. Different types of hydrological models,
different methods employed in selecting appropriate models for
different case studies are analysed. Applications of evolutionary
algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques are discussed and
compared especially in water resources management and modelling.
This review concentrates on Genetic Programming (GP) and fully
discusses its theories and applications. The successful applications of
GP as a soft computing technique were reviewed in sediment
modelling. Some fundamental issues such as benchmark,
generalization ability, bloat, over-fitting and other open issues
relating to the working principles of GP are highlighted. This paper
concludes with the identification of some research gaps in
hydrological modelling and sediment yield.
Abstract: We consider the problem of stabilization of an unstable
heat equation in a 2-D, 3-D and generally n-D domain by deriving a
generalized backstepping boundary control design methodology. To
stabilize the systems, we design boundary backstepping controllers
inspired by the 1-D unstable heat equation stabilization procedure.
We assume that one side of the boundary is hinged and the other
side is controlled for each direction of the domain. Thus, controllers
act on two boundaries for 2-D domain, three boundaries for 3-D
domain and ”n” boundaries for n-D domain. The main idea of the
design is to derive ”n” controllers for each of the dimensions by
using ”n” kernel functions. Thus, we obtain ”n” controllers for the
”n” dimensional case. We use a transformation to change the system
into an exponentially stable ”n” dimensional heat equation. The
transformation used in this paper is a generalized Volterra/Fredholm
type with ”n” kernel functions for n-D domain instead of the one
kernel function of 1-D design.
Abstract: The use of information technology in education have
changed not only the learners learning style but also the way they
taught, where nowadays learners are connected with diversity of
information sources with means of knowledge available everywhere.
The advantage of network wireless technologies and mobility
technologies used in the education and learning processes lead to
mobile learning as a new model of learning technology. Currently,
most of mobile learning applications are developed for the formal
education and learning environment. Despite the long history and
large amount of research on mobile learning and instruction design
model still there is a need of well-defined process in designing
mobile learning applications. Based on this situation, this paper
emphasizes on identifying instruction design phase’s considerations
and influencing factors in developing mobile learning application.
This set of instruction design steps includes analysis, design,
development, implementation, evaluation and continuous has been
built from a literature study, with focus on standards for learning,
mobile application software quality and guidelines. The effort is part
of an Omani-funded research project investigating the development,
adoption and dissemination of mobile learning in Oman.
Abstract: The need to save time and cost of soil testing at the
planning stage of road work has necessitated developing predictive
models. This study proposes a model for predicting the dry density of
lateritic soils stabilized with corn cob ash (CCA) and blended cement
- CCA. Lateritic soil was first stabilized with CCA at 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and
6% of the weight of soil and then stabilized with the same
proportions as replacement for cement. Dry density, specific gravity,
maximum degree of saturation and moisture content were determined
for each stabilized soil specimen, following standard procedure.
Polynomial equations containing alpha and beta parameters for CCA
and blended CCA-cement were developed. Experimental values were
correlated with the values predicted from the Matlab curve fitting
tool, and the Solver function of Microsoft Excel 2010. The correlation
coefficient (R2) of 0.86 was obtained indicating that the model could
be accepted in predicting the maximum dry density of CCA stabilized
soils to facilitate quick decision making in roadworks.
Abstract: In the present study, analysis of heat transfer is carried
out in the slip flow region for the fluid flowing between two parallel
plates by employing the asymmetric heat fluxes at surface of the
plates. The flow is assumed to be hydrodynamically and thermally
fully developed for the analysis. The second order velocity slip and
viscous dissipation effects are considered for the analysis. Closed
form expressions are obtained for the Nusselt number as a function of
Knudsen number and modified Brinkman number. The limiting
condition of the present prediction for Kn = 0, Kn2 = 0, and Brq1 = 0
is considered and found to agree well with other analytical results.
Abstract: The development of composite materials and the
related design and manufacturing technologies is one of the most
important advances in the history of materials. Composites are
multifunctional materials having unprecedented mechanical and
physical properties that can be tailored to meet the requirements of a
particular application. Some composites also exhibit great resistance
to high-temperature corrosion, oxidation, and wear. Polymers are
widely used indoors and outdoors, therefore they are exposed to a
chemical environment which may include atmospheric oxygen, acidic
fumes, acidic rain, moisture heat and thermal shock, ultra-violet light,
high energy radiation, etc. Different polymers are affected differently
by these factors even though the amorphous polymers are more
sensitive. Ageing is also important and it is defined as the process of
deterioration of engineering materials resulting from the combined
effects of atmospheric radiation, heat, oxygen, water, microorganisms
and other atmospheric factors.
