Abstract: Since supply chains highly impact the financial
performance of companies, it is important to optimize and analyze
their Key Performance Indicators (KPI). The synergistic combination
of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Monte Carlo simulation is
applied to determine the optimal reorder point of warehouses in
supply chains. The goal of the optimization is the minimization of the
objective function calculated as the linear combination of holding and
order costs. The required values of service levels of the warehouses
represent non-linear constraints in the PSO. The results illustrate that
the developed stochastic simulator and optimization tool is flexible
enough to handle complex situations.
Abstract: This paper presents the modeling of a MEMS based accelerometer in order to detect the presence of a wheel flat in the railway vehicle. A haversine wheel flat is assigned to one wheel of a 5 DOF pitch plane vehicle model, which is coupled to a 3 layer track model. Based on the simulated acceleration response obtained from the vehicle-track model, an accelerometer is designed that meets all the requirements to detect the presence of a wheel flat. The proposed accelerometer can survive in a dynamic shocking environment with acceleration up to ±150g. The parameters of the accelerometer are calculated in order to achieve the required specifications using lumped element approximation and the results are used for initial design layout. A finite element analysis code (COMSOL) is used to perform simulations of the accelerometer under various operating conditions and to determine the optimum configuration. The simulated results are found within about 2% of the calculated values, which indicates the validity of lumped element approach. The stability of the accelerometer is also determined in the desired range of operation including the condition under shock.
Abstract: Extensive information is required within a R&D environment,
and a considerable amount of time and efforts are being
spent on finding the necessary information. An adaptive information
providing system would be beneficial to the environment, and a
conceptual model of the resources, people and context is mandatory
for developing such applications. In this paper, an information model
on various contexts and resources is proposed which provides the
possibility of effective applications for use in adaptive information
systems within a R&D project and meeting environment.
Abstract: In this paper, Novel method, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, based technique is proposed to estimate and analyze the steady state performance of self-excited induction generator (SEIG). In this novel method the tedious job of deriving the complex coefficients of a polynomial equation and solving it, as in previous methods, is not required. By comparing the simulation results obtained by the proposed method with those obtained by the well known mathematical methods, a good agreement between these results is obtained. The comparison validates the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Abstract: Quality costs are the costs associated with preventing,
finding, and correcting defective work. Since the main language of
corporate management is money, quality-related costs act as means of
communication between the staff of quality engineering departments
and the company managers. The objective of quality engineering is to
minimize the total quality cost across the life of product. Quality
costs provide a benchmark against which improvement can be
measured over time. It provides a rupee-based report on quality
improvement efforts. It is an effective tool to identify, prioritize and
select quality improvement projects. After reviewing through the
literature it was noticed that a simplified methodology for data
collection of quality cost in a manufacturing industry was required.
The quantified standard methodology is proposed for collecting data
of various elements of quality cost categories for manufacturing
industry. Also in the light of research carried out so far, it is felt
necessary to standardise cost elements in each of the prevention,
appraisal, internal failure and external failure costs. . Here an attempt
is made to standardise the various cost elements applicable to
manufacturing industry and data is collected by using the proposed
quantified methodology. This paper discusses the case study carried
in luggage manufacturing industry.
Abstract: Inconel718 has been widely used as a super alloy in aerospace application due to the high strength at elevated temperatures, satisfactory oxidation resistance and heat corrosion resistance. In this study, the Inconel718 has been fabricated using high technology of Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process due to the cost effective technique for producing small, complex and precision parts in high volume compared with conventional method through machining. Through MIM, the binder system is one of the most important criteria in order to successfully fabricate the Inconel718. Even though, the binder system is a temporary, but failure in the selection and removal of the binder system will affect on the final properties of the sintered parts. Therefore, the binder system based on palm oil derivative which is palm stearin has been formulated and developed to replace the conventional binder system. The rheological studies of the mixture between the powder and binders system have been determined properly in order to be successful during injection into injection molding machine. After molding, the binder holds the particles in place. The binder system has to be removed completely through debinding step. During debinding step, solvent debinding and thermal pyrolysis has been used to remove completely of the binder system. The debound part is then sintered to give the required physical and mechanical properties. The results show that the properties of the final sintered parts fulfill the Standard Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) 35 for MIM parts.
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to present the
development of the frame of Chulalongkorn University team in TSAE
Auto Challenge Student Formula and Student Formula SAE
Competition of Japan. Chulalongkorn University's SAE team, has
established since year 2003, joined many competitions since year 2006
and became the leading team in Thailand. Through these 5 years, space
frame was the most selected and developed year by year through six
frame designs. In this paper, the discussions on the conceptual design
of these frames are introduced, focusing on the mass and torsional
stiffness improvement. The torsional stiffness test was performed on
the real used frames and the results are compared. It can be seen that
the 2010-2011 frame is firstly designed based on the analysis and
experiment that considered the required mass and torsional stiffness.
From the torsional stiffness results, it can be concluded that the frames
were developed including the decreasing of mass and the increasing
torsional stiffness by applying many techniques.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental
investigation carried out to evaluate the shrinkage of High Strength
Concrete. High Strength Concrete is made by partially replacement of
cement by flyash and silica fume. The shrinkage of High Strength
Concrete has been studied using the different types of coarse and fine
aggregates i.e. Sandstone and Granite of 12.5 mm size and Yamuna
and Badarpur Sand. The Mix proportion of concrete is 1:0.8:2.2 with
water cement ratio as 0.30. Superplasticizer dose @ of 2% by weight
of cement is added to achieve the required degree of workability in
terms of compaction factor.
From the test results of the above investigation it can be concluded
that the shrinkage strain of High Strength Concrete increases with
age. The shrinkage strain of concrete with replacement of cement by
10% of Flyash and Silica fume respectively at various ages are more
(6 to 10%) than the shrinkage strain of concrete without Flyash and
Silica fume. The shrinkage strain of concrete with Badarpur sand as
Fine aggregate at 90 days is slightly less (10%) than that of concrete
with Yamuna Sand. Further, the shrinkage strain of concrete with
Granite as Coarse aggregate at 90 days is slightly less (6 to 7%) than
that of concrete with Sand stone as aggregate of same size. The
shrinkage strain of High Strength Concrete is also compared with that
of normal strength concrete. Test results show that the shrinkage
strain of high strength concrete is less than that of normal strength
concrete.
Abstract: Software maintenance and mainly software
comprehension pose the largest costs in the software lifecycle. In
order to assess the cost of software comprehension, various
complexity measures have been proposed in the literature. This paper
proposes new cognitive-spatial complexity measures, which combine
the impact of spatial as well as architectural aspect of the software to
compute the software complexity. The spatial aspect of the software
complexity is taken into account using the lexical distances (in
number of lines of code) between different program elements and the
architectural aspect of the software complexity is taken into
consideration using the cognitive weights of control structures
present in control flow of the program. The proposed measures are
evaluated using standard axiomatic frameworks and then, the
proposed measures are compared with the corresponding existing
cognitive complexity measures as well as the spatial complexity
measures for object-oriented software. This study establishes that the
proposed measures are better indicators of the cognitive effort
required for software comprehension than the other existing
complexity measures for object-oriented software.
Abstract: These days wireless local area networks has become
very popular, when the initial IEEE802.11 is the standard for
providing wireless connectivity to automatic machinery, equipment
and stations that require rapid deployment, which may be portable,
handheld or which may be mounted on moving vehicles within a
local area. IEEE802.11 Wireless local area network is a sharedmedium
communication network that transmits information over
wireless links for all IEEE802.11 stations in its transmission range to
receive. When a user is moving from one location to another, how
the other user knows about the required station inside WLAN. For
that we designed and implemented a system to locate a mobile user
inside the wireless local area network based on RSSI with the help of
four specially designed architectures. These architectures are based
on statistical or we can say manual configuration of mapping and
radio map of indoor and outdoor location with the help of available
Sniffer based and cluster based techniques. We found a better
location of a mobile user in WLAN. We tested this work in indoor
and outdoor environments with different locations with the help of
Pamvotis, a simulator for WLAN.
Abstract: A generalization of the concepts of Feistel Networks (FN), known as Extended Feistel Network (EFN) is examined. EFN splits the input blocks into n > 2 sub-blocks. Like conventional FN, EFN consists of a series of rounds whereby at least one sub-block is subjected to an F function. The function plays a key role in the diffusion process due to its completeness property. It is also important to note that in EFN the F-function is the most computationally expensive operation in a round. The aim of this paper is to determine a suitable type of EFN for a scalable cipher. This is done by analyzing the threshold number of rounds for different types of EFN to achieve the completeness property as well as the number of F-function required in the network. The work focuses on EFN-Type I, Type II and Type III only. In the analysis it is found that EFN-Type II and Type III diffuses at the same rate and both are faster than Type-I EFN. Since EFN-Type-II uses less F functions as compared to EFN-Type III, therefore Type II is the most suitable EFN for use in a scalable cipher.
Abstract: Dexamethasone (Dex) is a synthetic glucocorticoid
that is used in therapy. However prolonged treatments with high
doses are often required. This causes side effects that interfere with
the activity of several endocrine systems, including the gonadotropic
axis.
The aim of our study is to determine the effect of Dex on testicular
function in prepubertal Wistar rats.
Newborn Wistar rats are submitted to intraperitoneal injection of
Dex (1μg of Dex dissolved in NaCl 0.9% / 5g bw) for 20 days and
then sacrificed at the age of 40days. A control group received NaCl
0.9%. The rat is weighed daily. The plasmatic levels of testosterone,
LH and FSH were measured by radioimmunoassay. A histomorphometric
study was performed on sections of testis.
Treated groups showed a significant decrease in body weight (p
Abstract: When the Malaysian government announced the implementation of the Build-Then-Sell (BTS) system in 2007, the proponents of the BTS have argued that the implementation of this new system may provide houses with low defects. However, there has been no empirical data to support their argument. Therefore, this study is conducted to measure the level of housing defects in the BTS housing delivery system. A survey was conducted to the occupiers in six BTS residential areas. The BTS residential areas have been identified through the media and because of the small number of population, all households in the BTS residential areas were required to participate in the study to enable the researcher to collect the data concerning defects. Questionnaire had been employed as the data collection instrument and was distributed to the respondents of this study. The result has shown that the level of defects in the BTS houses is low, as the rate of defects for all elements are slight. Such low level of defects has apparently only affected the aesthetic value of the houses.
Abstract: Buyer coalition with a combination of items is a group of buyers joining together to purchase a combination of items with a larger discount. The primary aim of existing buyer coalition with a combination of items research is to generate a large total discount. However, the aim is hard to achieve because this research is based on the assumption that each buyer completely knows other buyers- information or at least one buyer knows other buyers- information in a coalition by exchange of information. These assumption contrast with the real world environment where buyers join a coalition with incomplete information, i.e., they concerned only with their expected discounts. Therefore, this paper proposes a new buyer community coalition formation with a combination of items scheme, called the Community Compromised Combinatorial Coalition scheme, under such an environment of incomplete information. In order to generate a larger total discount, after buyers who want to join a coalition propose their minimum required saving, a coalition structure that gives a maximum total retail prices is formed. Then, the total discount division of the coalition is divided among buyers in the coalition depending on their minimum required saving and is a Pareto optimal. In mathematical analysis, we compare concepts of this scheme with concepts of the existing buyer coalition scheme. Our mathematical analysis results show that the total discount of the coalition in this scheme is larger than that in the existing buyer coalition scheme.
Abstract: The demand for new telecommunication services requiring higher capacities, data rates and different operating modes have motivated the development of new generation multi-standard wireless transceivers. A multi-standard design often involves extensive system level analysis and architectural partitioning, typically requiring extensive calculations. In this research, a decimation filter design tool for wireless communication standards consisting of GSM, WCDMA, WLANa, WLANb, WLANg and WiMAX is developed in MATLAB® using GUIDE environment for visual analysis. The user can select a required wireless communication standard, and obtain the corresponding multistage decimation filter implementation using this toolbox. The toolbox helps the user or design engineer to perform a quick design and analysis of decimation filter for multiple standards without doing extensive calculation of the underlying methods.
Abstract: Tourism industries are rapidly increased for the last
few years especially in Malaysia. In order to attract more tourists,
Malaysian Governance encourages any effort to increase Malaysian
tourism industry. One of the efforts in attracting more tourists in
Malacca, Malaysia is a duck tour. Duck tour is an amphibious
sightseeing tour that works in two types of engines, hence, it required
a huge cost to operate and maintain the vehicle. To other country, it is
not so new but in Malaysia, it is just introduced, thus it does not have
any systematic routing yet. Therefore, this paper proposed an
optimization technique to formulate and schedule this tour to
minimize the operating costs by considering it into Travelling
Salesman Problem (TSP). The problem is then can be solved by one
of the optimization technique especially meta-heuristics approach
such as Tabu Search (TS) and Reactive Tabu Search (RTS).
Abstract: Scarcity of water resources and huge costs of
establishing new hydraulic installations necessitate optimal
exploitation from existing reservoirs. Sustainable management and
efficient exploitation from existing finite water resources are
important factors in water resource management, particularly in the
periods of water insufficiency and in dry regions, and on account of
competitive allocations in the view of exploitation management. This
study aims to minimize reservoir water release from a determined
rate of demand. A numerical model for water optimal exploitation
has been developed using GAMS introduced by the World Bank and
applied to the case of Meijaran dam, northern Iran. The results
indicate that this model can optimize the function of reservoir
exploitation while required water for lower parts of the region will be
supplied. Further, allocating optimal water from reservoir, the
optimal rate of water allocated to any group of the users were
specified to increase benefits in curve dam exploitation.
Abstract: Recently, there are significant improvements in the
capabilities of mobile devices; rendering large terrain is tedious
because of the constraint in resources of mobile devices. This
paper focuses on the implementation of terrain rendering on
mobile device to observe some issues and current constraints
occurred. Experiments are performed using two datasets with
results based on rendering speed and appearance to ascertain both
the issues and constraints. The result shows a downfall of frame
rate performance because of the increase of triangles. Since the
resolution between computer and mobile device is different, the
terrain surface on mobile device looks more unrealistic compared
to on a computer. Thus, more attention in the development of
terrain rendering on mobile devices is required. The problems
highlighted in this paper will be the focus of future research and
will be a great importance for 3D visualization on mobile device.
Abstract: Hybridization refers to the crossing breeding of two
plants. Coefficient of Parentage (COP) is used by the plant breeders
to determine the genetic diversity across various varieties so as to
incorporate the useful characters of the two varieties to develop a
new crop variety with particular useful characters. Genetic Diversity
is the prerequisite for any cultivar development program. Genetic
Diversity depends upon the pedigree information of the varieties
based on particular levels. Pedigree refers to the parents of a
particular variety at various levels. This paper discusses the searching
and analyses of different possible pairs of varieties selected on the
basis of morphological characters, Climatic conditions and Nutrients
so as to obtain the most optimal pair that can produce the required
crossbreed variety. An algorithm was developed to determine the
coefficient of parentage (COP) between the selected wheat varieties.
Dummy values were used wherever actual data was not available.
