Abstract: This paper presents an assessment study conducted
among the distance learners in India. Open and distance learning
systems have traveled a long way since its inception and its journey
has witnessed the evolution and adoption of different generations of
technology. This study focuses on the distant learners in India.
Sampling for this study has been derived from the mass enrollment
from Tamil Nadu area, a southern state of India. Learners were
chosen from dual mode universities, private universities, Tamil Nadu
Open University and IGNOU. The main focus of the study is to
examine the coverage and appropriation of students support services
and learning aids. It explores two aspects: the facilities available and
the awareness and use of such services. It includes, self-learning
materials, face-to-face counseling, multimedia learning materials,
website, e-learning, radio and television services etc. While exploring
the student-s perspective on these learning aspects, it is important to
understand the perspectives of the teachers. Two different interests
are visible among the teachers. Majority of the teachers support faceto-
face counseling. However, the young teachers are in favour of
online learning and multimedia supports in teaching. Through the
awareness is somewhat high, the actual participation in online is very
low. This is due to the inadequate infrastructure as well as the
traditional attitudes of the teachers. Still the face-to-face sessions
remain popular than online.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of computer–based instructional designs, namely modality and redundancy principles on the attitude and learning of music theory among primary pupils of different Music Intelligence levels. The lesson of music theory was developed in three different modes, audio and image (AI), text with image (TI) and audio with image and text (AIT). The independent variables were the three modes of courseware. The moderator variable was music intelligence. The dependent variables were the post test score. ANOVA was used to determine the significant differences of the pretest scores among the three groups. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) and Post hoc were carried out to examine the main effects as well as the interaction effects of the independent variables on the dependent variables. High music intelligence pupils performed significantly better than low music intelligence pupils in all the three treatment modes. The AI mode was found to help pupils with low music intelligence significantly more than the TI and AIT modes.
Abstract: Currently, there are many local area industrial networks
that can give guaranteed bandwidth to synchronous traffic, particularly
providing CBR channels (Constant Bit Rate), which allow
improved bandwidth management. Some of such networks operate
over Ethernet, delivering channels with enough capacity, specially
with compressors, to integrate multimedia traffic in industrial monitoring
and image processing applications with many sources. In
these industrial environments where a low latency is an essential
requirement, JPEG is an adequate compressing technique but it
generates VBR traffic (Variable Bit Rate). Transmitting VBR traffic
in CBR channels is inefficient and current solutions to this problem
significantly increase the latency or further degrade the quality. In
this paper an R(q) model is used which allows on-line calculation of
the JPEG quantification factor. We obtained increased quality, a lower
requirement for the CBR channel with reduced number of discarded
frames along with better use of the channel bandwidth.
Abstract: Many multimedia communication applications require a
source to transmit messages to multiple destinations subject to quality
of service (QoS) delay constraint. To support delay constrained
multicast communications, computer networks need to guarantee an
upper bound end-to-end delay from the source node to each of
the destination nodes. This is known as multicast delay problem.
On the other hand, if the same message fails to arrive at each
destination node at the same time, there may arise inconsistency and
unfairness problem among users. This is related to multicast delayvariation
problem. The problem to find a minimum cost multicast
tree with delay and delay-variation constraints has been proven to
be NP-Complete. In this paper, we propose an efficient heuristic
algorithm, namely, Economic Delay and Delay-Variation Bounded
Multicast (EDVBM) algorithm, based on a novel heuristic function,
to construct an economic delay and delay-variation bounded multicast
tree. A noteworthy feature of this algorithm is that it has very high
probability of finding the optimal solution in polynomial time with
low computational complexity.
Abstract: Multimedia security is an incredibly significant area of concern. The paper aims to discuss a robust image watermarking scheme, which can withstand geometric attacks. The source image is initially moment normalized in order to make it withstand geometric attacks. The moment normalized image is wavelet transformed. The first level wavelet transformed image is segmented into blocks if size 8x8. The product of mean and standard and standard deviation of each block is computed. The second level wavelet transformed image is divided into 8x8 blocks. The product of block mean and the standard deviation are computed. The difference between products in the two levels forms the watermark. The watermark is inserted by modulating the coefficients of the mid frequencies. The modulated image is inverse wavelet transformed and inverse moment normalized to generate the watermarked image. The watermarked image is now ready for transmission. The proposed scheme can be used to validate identification cards and financial instruments. The performance of this scheme has been evaluated using a set of parameters. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this scheme.
Abstract: Multirate multimedia delivery applications in multihop Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) are data redundant and delay-sensitive, which brings a lot of challenges for designing efficient transmission systems. In this paper, we propose a new cross layer resource allocation scheme to minimize the receiver side distortion within the delay bound requirements, by exploring application layer Position and Value (P-V) diversity as well as the multihop Effective Capacity (EC). We specifically consider image transmission optimization here. First of all, the maximum supportable source traffic rate is identified by exploring the multihop Effective Capacity (EC) model. Furthermore, the optimal source coding rate is selected according to the P-V diversity of multirate media streaming, which significantly increases the decoded media quality. Simulation results show the proposed approach improved media quality significantly compared with traditional approaches under the same QoS requirements.
Abstract: In these days, multimedia data is transmitted and
processed in compressed format. Due to the decoding procedure and
filtering for edge detection, the feature extraction process of MPEG-7
Edge Histogram Descriptor is time-consuming as well as
computationally expensive. To improve efficiency of compressed
image retrieval, we propose a new edge histogram generation
algorithm in DCT domain in this paper. Using the edge information
provided by only two AC coefficients of DCT coefficients, we can get
edge directions and strengths directly in DCT domain. The
experimental results demonstrate that our system has good
performance in terms of retrieval efficiency and effectiveness.
Abstract: Efficient retrieval of multimedia objects has gained enormous focus in recent years. A number of techniques have been suggested for retrieval of textual information; however, relatively little has been suggested for efficient retrieval of multimedia objects. In this paper we have proposed a generic architecture for contextaware retrieval of multimedia objects. The proposed framework combines the well-known approaches of text-based retrieval and context-aware retrieval to formulate architecture for accurate retrieval of multimedia data.
Abstract: Interactive installations for public spaces are a
particular kind of interactive systems, the design of which has been
the subject of several research studies. Sensor-based applications are
becoming increasingly popular, but the human-computer interaction
community is still far from reaching sound, effective large-scale
interactive installations for public spaces. The 6DSpaces project is
described in this paper as a research approach based on studying the
role of multisensory interactivity and how it can be effectively used
to approach people to digital, scientific contents. The design of an
entire scientific exhibition is described and the result was evaluated
in the real world context of a Science Centre. Conclusions bring
insight into how the human-computer interaction should be designed
in order to maximize the overall experience.
Abstract: Over the past several years, there has been a
considerable amount of research within the field of Quality of
Service (QoS) support for distributed multimedia systems. One of the
key issues in providing end-to-end QoS guarantees in packet
networks is determining a feasible path that satisfies a number of
QoS constraints. The problem of finding a feasible path is NPComplete
if number of constraints is more than two and cannot be
exactly solved in polynomial time. We proposed Feasible Path
Selection Algorithm (FPSA) that addresses issues with pertain to
finding a feasible path subject to delay and cost constraints and it
offers higher success rate in finding feasible paths.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an effective relay
communication for layered video transmission as an alternative to
make the most of limited resources in a wireless communication
network where loss often occurs. Relaying brings stable multimedia
services to end clients, compared to multiple description coding
(MDC). Also, retransmission of only parity data about one or more
video layer using channel coder to the end client of the relay device is
paramount to the robustness of the loss situation. Using these
methods in resource-constrained environments, such as real-time user
created content (UCC) with layered video transmission, can provide
high-quality services even in a poor communication environment.
Minimal services are also possible. The mathematical analysis shows
that the proposed method reduced the probability of GOP loss rate
compared to MDC and raptor code without relay. The GOP loss rate
is about zero, while MDC and raptor code without relay have a GOP
loss rate of 36% and 70% in case of 10% frame loss rate.
Abstract: Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has been
one on the most vivid research areas in the field of computer vision
over the last 10 years. Many programs and tools have been
developed to formulate and execute queries based on the visual or
audio content and to help browsing large multimedia repositories.
Still, no general breakthrough has been achieved with respect to
large varied databases with documents of difering sorts and with
varying characteristics. Answers to many questions with respect to
speed, semantic descriptors or objective image interpretations are
still unanswered. In the medical field, images, and especially
digital images, are produced in ever increasing quantities and used
for diagnostics and therapy. In several articles, content based
access to medical images for supporting clinical decision making
has been proposed that would ease the management of clinical data
and scenarios for the integration of content-based access methods
into Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) have
been created. This paper gives an overview of soft computing
techniques. New research directions are being defined that can
prove to be useful. Still, there are very few systems that seem to be
used in clinical practice. It needs to be stated as well that the goal
is not, in general, to replace text based retrieval methods as they
exist at the moment.
Abstract: Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is one of the most
promising techniques for solving nearest neighbour search problem in
high dimensional space. Euclidean LSH is the most popular variation
of LSH that has been successfully applied in many multimedia
applications. However, the Euclidean LSH presents limitations that
affect structure and query performances. The main limitation of the
Euclidean LSH is the large memory consumption. In order to achieve
a good accuracy, a large number of hash tables is required. In this
paper, we propose a new hashing algorithm to overcome the storage
space problem and improve query time, while keeping a good
accuracy as similar to that achieved by the original Euclidean LSH.
The Experimental results on a real large-scale dataset show that the
proposed approach achieves good performances and consumes less
memory than the Euclidean LSH.
Abstract: A multimedia presentation system refers to the integration of a multimedia database with a presentation manager which has the functionality of content selection, organization and playout of multimedia presentations. It requires high performance of involved system components. Starting from multimedia information capture until the presentation delivery, high performance tools are required for accessing, manipulating, storing and retrieving these segments, for transferring and delivering them in a presentation terminal according to a playout order. The organization of presentations is a complex task in that the display order of presentation contents (in time and space) must be specified. A multimedia presentation contains audio, video, images and text media types. The critical decisions for presentation construction include what the contents are, how the contents are organized, and once the decision is made on the organization of the contents of the presentation, it must be conveyed to the end user in the correct organizational order and in a timely fashion. This paper introduces a framework for specification of multimedia presentations and describes the design of sample presentations using this framework from a multimedia database.
Abstract: The objective of the paper was to understand the use
of an important element of design, namely color in a Semiotic
system. Semiotics is the study of signs and sign processes, it is often
divided into three branches namely (i) Semantics that deals with the
relation between signs and the things to which they refer to mean, (ii)
Syntactics which addresses the relations among signs in formal
structures and (iii) Pragmatics that relates between signs and its
effects on they have on the people who use them to create a plan for
an object or a system referred to as design. Cubism with its versatility
was the key design tool prevalent across the 20th century. In order to
analyze the user's understanding of interaction and appreciation of
color through the movement of Cubism, an exercise was undertaken
in Dept. of Design, IIT Guwahati. This included tasks to design a
composition using color and sign process to the theme 'Between the
Lines' on a given tessellation where the users relate their work to the
world they live in, which in this case was the college campus of IIT
Guwahati. The findings demonstrate impact of the key design
element color on the principles of visual perception based on image
analysis of specific compositions.
Abstract: In this study, a network quality of service (QoS)
evaluation system was proposed. The system used a combination of
fuzzy C-means (FCM) and regression model to analyse and assess the
QoS in a simulated network. Network QoS parameters of multimedia
applications were intelligently analysed by FCM clustering
algorithm. The QoS parameters for each FCM cluster centre were
then inputted to a regression model in order to quantify the overall
QoS. The proposed QoS evaluation system provided valuable
information about the network-s QoS patterns and based on this
information, the overall network-s QoS was effectively quantified.
Abstract: One of the most growing areas in the embedded community is multimedia devices. Multimedia devices incorporate a number of complicated functions for their operation, like motion estimation. A multitude of different implementations have been proposed to reduce motion estimation complexity, such as spiral search. We have studied the implementations of spiral search and identified areas of improvement. We propose a modified spiral search algorithm, with lower computational complexity compared to the original spiral search. We have implemented our algorithm on an embedded ARM based architecture, with custom memory hierarchy. The resulting system yields energy consumption reduction up to 64% and performance increase up to 77%, with a small penalty of 2.3 dB, in average, of video quality compared with the original spiral search algorithm.
Abstract: The cellular network is one of the emerging areas of
communication, in which the mobile nodes act as member for one
base station. The cluster based communication is now an emerging
area of wireless cellular multimedia networks. The cluster renders
fast communication and also a convenient way to work with
connectivity. In our scheme we have proposed an optimization
technique for the fuzzy cluster nodes, by categorizing the group
members into three categories like long refreshable member, medium
refreshable member and short refreshable member. By considering
long refreshable nodes as static nodes, we compute the new
membership values for the other nodes in the cluster. We compare
their previous and present membership value with the threshold value
to categorize them into three different members. By which, we
optimize the nodes in the fuzzy clusters. The simulation results show
that there is reduction in the cluster computational time and
iterational time after optimization.
Abstract: An Ad hoc wireless network comprises of mobile
terminals linked and communicating with each other sans the aid of
traditional infrastructure. Optimized Link State Protocol (OLSR) is a
proactive routing protocol, in which routes are discovered/updated
continuously so that they are available when needed. Hello messages
generated by a node seeks information about its neighbor and if the
latter fails to respond to a specified number of hello messages
regulated by neighborhood hold time, the node is forced to assume
that the neighbor is not in range. This paper proposes to evaluate
OLSR routing protocol in a random mobility network having various
neighborhood hold time intervals. The throughput and delivery ratio
are also evaluated to learn about its efficiency for multimedia loads.
Abstract: Our adaptive multimodal system aims at correctly
presenting a mathematical expression to visually impaired users.
Given an interaction context (i.e. combination of user, environment
and system resources) as well as the complexity of the expression
itself and the user-s preferences, the suitability scores of different
presentation format are calculated. Unlike the current state-of-the art
solutions, our approach takes into account the user-s situation and not
imposes a solution that is not suitable to his context and capacity. In
this wok, we present our methodology for calculating the
mathematical expression complexity and the results of our
experiment. Finally, this paper discusses the concepts and principles
applied on our system as well as their validation through cases
studies. This work is our original contribution to an ongoing research
to make informatics more accessible to handicapped users.
