Abstract: The evaluation of the contribution of professional
baseball starting pitchers is a complex decision-making problem that
includes several quantitative attributes. It is considered a type of
multi-attribute or multi-criteria decision making (MADM/MCDM)
problem. This study proposes a model using the Grey Relational
Analysis (GRA) to evaluate the starting pitcher contribution for teams
of the Chinese Professional Baseball League. The GRA calculates the
individual grey relational degree of each alternative to the positive
ideal alternative. An empirical analysis was conducted to show the use
of the model for the starting pitcher contribution problem. The results
demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed model.
Abstract: This paper describes the design process and the realtime validation of an innovative autonomous mid-air flight and landing system developed by the Italian Aerospace Research Center in the framework of the Italian national funded project TECVOL (Technologies for the Autonomous Flight). In the paper it is provided an insight of the whole development process of the system under study. In particular, the project framework is illustrated at first, then the functional context and the adopted design and testing approach are described, and finally the on-ground validation test rig on purpose designed is addressed in details. Furthermore, the hardwarein- the-loop validation of the autonomous mid-air flight and landing system by means of the real-time test rig is described and discussed.
Abstract: Phytases are enzymes used as an important component
in monogastric animals feeds in order to improve phosphorous
availability, since it is not readily assimilated by these animals in the
form of the phytate presented in plants and grains. As these enzymes
are used in industrial activities, they must retain its catalytic activities
during a certain storage period. This study presents information about
the stability of 4 different phytases, produced by four macromycetes
fungi through solid-state fermentation (SSF). There is a lack of data
in literature concerning phytase from macromycetes shelf-life in
storage conditions at room, cooling and freezing temperatures. The 4
phytases from macromycetes still had enzymatic activities around
100 days of storage at room temperature. At cooling temperature in
146 days of studies, the phytase from G. stipitatum was the most
stable with 44% of the initial activity, in U.gds (units per gram of
dried fermented substrate). The freezing temperature was the best
condition storage for phytases from G. stipitatum and T. versicolor.
Each condition provided a study for each mushroom phytase,
totalizing 12 studies. The phytases showed to be stable for a long
period without the addition of additives.
Abstract: In this work a software simulation model has been
proposed for two driven wheels mobile robot path planning; that can
navigate in dynamic environment with static distributed obstacles.
The work involves utilizing Bezier curve method in a proposed N
order matrix form; for engineering the mobile robot path. The Bezier
curve drawbacks in this field have been diagnosed. Two directions:
Up and Right function has been proposed; Probability Recursive
Function (PRF) to overcome those drawbacks.
PRF functionality has been developed through a proposed;
obstacle detection function, optimization function which has the
capability of prediction the optimum path without comparison
between all feasible paths, and N order Bezier curve function that
ensures the drawing of the obtained path.
The simulation results that have been taken showed; the mobile
robot travels successfully from starting point and reaching its goal
point. All obstacles that are located in its way have been avoided.
This navigation is being done successfully using the proposed PRF
techniques.
Abstract: A manufacturing feature can be defined simply as a
geometric shape and its manufacturing information to create the shape.
In a feature-based process planning system, feature library plays an
important role in the extraction of manufacturing features with their
proper manufacturing information. However, to manage the
manufacturing information flexibly, it is important to build a feature
library that is easy to modify. In this paper, a Wiki-based feature
library is proposed.
Abstract: We report a novel fusion tag for expressing
recombinant proteins in E. coli. The fusion tag is the C-terminus part
of the human GMCSF gene comprising 45 amino acids, which aid in
over expression of otherwise non expressible genes. Expression of
hIFN a2b with this fusion tag also escapes the requirement of rare
codons for expression. This is also a first report of a small fusion tag
of human origin having affinity to heparin sepharose column
facilitating the purification of fusion protein.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to identify the conditions of
implementation for reconfigurability in summarizing past flexible
manufacturing systems (FMS) research by drawing overall
conclusions from many separate High Performance Manufacturing
(HPM) studies. Meta-analysis will be applied to links between HPM
programs and their practices related to FMS and manufacturing
performance with particular reference to responsiveness performance.
More specifically, an application of meta-analysis will be made with
reference to two of the main steps towards the development of an
empirically-tested theory: testing the adequacy of the measurement of
variables and testing the linkages between the variables.
Abstract: Ad hoc networks are characterized by multihop wireless connectivity, frequently changing network topology and the need for efficient dynamic routing protocols. We compare the performance of three routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks: Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV), location-aided routing (LAR1).Our evaluation is based on energy consumption in mobile ad hoc networks. The performance differentials are analyzed using varying network load, mobility, and network size. We simulate protocols with GLOMOSIM simulator. Based on the observations, we make recommendations about when the performance of either protocol can be best.
Abstract: Learning is the acquisition of new mental schemata, knowledge, abilities and skills which can be used to solve problems potentially more successfully. The learning process is optimum when it is assisted and personalized. Learning is not a single activity, but should involve many possible activities to make learning become meaningful. Many e-learning applications provide facilities to support teaching and learning activities. One way to identify whether the e-learning system is being used by the learners is through the number of hits that can be obtained from the e-learning system's log data. However, we cannot rely solely to the number of hits in order to determine whether learning had occurred meaningfully. This is due to the fact that meaningful learning should engage five characteristics namely active, constructive, intentional, authentic and cooperative. This paper aims to analyze the e-learning activities that is meaningful to learning. By focusing on the meaningful learning characteristics, we match it to the corresponding Moodle e-learning activities. This analysis discovers the activities that have high impact to meaningful learning, as well as activities that are less meaningful. The high impact activities is given high weights since it become important to meaningful learning, while the low impact has less weight and said to be supportive e-learning activities. The result of this analysis helps us categorize which e-learning activities that are meaningful to learning and guide us to measure the effectiveness of e-learning usage.
Abstract: Many of the compounds present in potato are important because of their beneficial effects on health, therefore, are highly desirable in the human diet. Potato tubers contain significant amounts of anthocyanins. The aim of this research was to determine the content of anthocyanins and its relationship with the colour of organically and conventionally cultivated potato varieties. Abstract: The tracking allows to detect the tumor affections of cervical cancer, it is particularly complex and consuming time, because it consists in seeking some abnormal cells among a cluster of normal cells. In this paper, we present our proposed computer system for helping the doctors in tracking the cervical cancer. Knowing that the diagnosis of the malignancy is based in the set of atypical morphological details of all cells, herein, we present an unsupervised genetic algorithm for the separation of cell components since the diagnosis is doing by analysis of the core and the cytoplasm. We give also the various algorithms used for computing the morphological characteristics of cells (Ratio core/cytoplasm, cellular deformity, ...) necessary for the recognition of illness.
Abstract: The objective of the study is to investigate the
effect of a footballer-s postural on selected physical fitness
components. Twenty-one (21) subjects of the university male
footballers under the Sport Excellence Center programme were
photographed using qualitative analysis. The postural variables
were stratified manually into normal and anomalies group and
their flexibility, strength and SAQ performance were
compared using the Mann-Whitney Test. The AROM
assessment and SAQ test reported no significance difference
(Z=-.398, p=0.711, p>0.05), similar to the lower body strength
was shown with no significance different (Z=-.493, p=0.640,

Abstract: The predictability of masonry arch bridges and their
behaviour is widely considered doubtful due to the lack of knowledge
about the conditions of a given masonry arch bridge. The assessment
methods for masonry arch bridges are MEXE, ARCHIE, RING and
Frame Analysis Method. The material properties of the masonry and
fill material are extremely difficult to determine accurately.
Consequently, it is necessary to examine the effect of load dispersal
angle through the fill material, the effect of variations in the stiffness
of the masonry, the tensile strength of the masonry mortar continuum
and the compressive strength of the masonry mortar continuum. It is
also important to understand the effect of fill material on load
dispersal angle to determine their influence on ratings. In this paper a
series of parametric studies, to examine the sensitivity of assessment
ratings to the various sets of input data required by the frame analysis
method, are carried out.
Abstract: To assess the effects of functional protein on osteoblast, Large quantity of high-purity osteoblasts had been cultivated successfully by adopting sequential enzyme digestion. The growth curve of osteoblasts was protracted by cell counting. Proliferation of osteoblasts was assessed by MTT colorimetry. The experimental results show the functional protein can enhance proliferation, the properties of adhesion and discuss the effect of osteopontin on osteoblast.
Abstract: Formulation of biological profile is one of the modern roles of forensic anthropologist. The present study was conducted to estimate height using foot and shoeprint length of Malaysian population. The present work can be very useful information in the process of identification of individual in forensic cases based on shoeprint evidence. It can help to narrow down suspects and ease the police investigation. Besides, stature is important parameters in determining the partial identify of unidentified and mutilated bodies. Thus, this study can help the problem encountered in cases of mass disaster, massacre, explosions and assault cases. This is because it is very hard to identify parts of bodies in these cases where people are dismembered and become unrecognizable. Samples in this research were collected from 200 Malaysian adults (100 males and 100 females) with age ranging from 20 to 45 years old. In this research, shoeprint length were measured based on the print of the shoes made from the flat shoes. Other information like gender, foot length and height of subject were also recorded. The data was analyzed using IBM® SPSS Statistics 19 software. Results indicated that, foot length has a strong correlation with stature than shoeprint length for both sides of the feet. However, in the unknown, where the gender was undetermined have shown a better correlation in foot length and shoeprint length parameter compared to males and females analyzed separately. In addition, prediction equations are developed to estimate the stature using linear regression analysis of foot length and shoeprint length. However, foot lengths give better prediction than shoeprint length.
Abstract: Aircraft propulsion systems often use Y-shaped
subsonic diffusing ducts as twin air-intakes to supply the ambient air
into the engine compressor for thrust generation. Due to space
constraint, the diffusers need to be curved, which causes severe flow
non-uniformity at the engine face. The present study attempt to
control flow in a mild-curved Y-duct diffuser using trapezoidalshaped
vortex generators (VG) attached on either both the sidewalls
or top and bottom walls of the diffuser at the inflexion plane. A
commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code is modified
and is used to simulate the effects of SVG in flow of a Y-duct
diffuser. A few experiments are conducted for CFD code validation,
while the rest are done computationally. The best combination of Yduct
diffuser is found with VG-2 arranged in co-rotating sequence
and attached to both the sidewalls, which ensures highest static
pressure recovery, lowest total pressure loss, minimum flow
distortion and less flow separation in Y-duct diffuser. The decrease in
VG height while attached to top and bottom walls further improves
axial flow uniformity at the diffuser outlet by a great margin as
compared to the bare duct.
Abstract: This paper suggests a calibration method to reduce
errors occurring due to mobile robot sliding during location estimation
using the Dead-reckoning. Due to sliding of the mobile robot caused
between its wheels and the road surface while on free run, location
estimation can be erroneous. Sliding especially occurs during
cornering of mobile robot. Therefore, in order to reduce these frequent
sliding errors in cornering, we calibrated the mobile robot-s heading
values using a vision camera and templates of the ceiling.
Abstract: The paper investigates the relationship between the foreign direct investment (FDI) and the corporate governance or transparency by investigating the country-level FDI flows, FDI inward performance, corporate governance and transparency variables. From the regression analysis with Newey-West estimator of 28 country panel data from 1990- 2002, we find strong positive relationships between corporate governance or transparency level of hosting countries and FDI inward performance within hosting countries. A strong positive relationship is found between anti-director rights level or number of analysts of hosting countries and FDI inward performance within hosting countries. Also, we find a positive relationship between the number of analysts of hosting countries and FDI inflows. The empirical results are consistent with stock market liberalizations and corporate governance explanations of reasons for FDI.
Abstract: The prediction of transmembrane helical segments
(TMHs) in membrane proteins is an important field in the
bioinformatics research. In this paper, a new method based on discrete
wavelet transform (DWT) has been developed to predict the number
and location of TMHs in membrane proteins. PDB coded as 1KQG
was chosen as an example to describe the prediction of the number and
location of TMHs in membrane proteins by using this method. To
access the effect of the method, 80 proteins with known 3D-structure
from Mptopo database are chosen at random as the test objects
(including 325 TMHs), 308 of which can be predicted accurately, the
average predicted accuracy is 96.3%. In addition, the above 80
membrane proteins are divided into 13 groups according to their
function and type. In particular, the results of the prediction of TMHs
of the 13 groups are satisfying.
Abstract: China apparel industry, which is deeply embedded in
the global production network (GPN), faces the dual pressures of
social upgrading and economic upgrading. Based on the survey in
Ningbo apparel cluster, the paper shows the state of corporate social
responsibility (CSR) in China apparel industry is better than before.
And the investigation indicates that the firms who practice CSR
actively perform better both socially and economically than those who
inactively. The research demonstrates that CSR can be an initial
capital rather than cost, and “doing well by doing good" is also existed
in labor intensive industry.
