Abstract: Robots- visual perception is a field that is gaining
increasing attention from researchers. This is partly due to emerging
trends in the commercial availability of 3D scanning systems or
devices that produce a high information accuracy level for a variety of
applications. In the history of mining, the mortality rate of mine workers
has been alarming and robots exhibit a great deal of potentials to
tackle safety issues in mines. However, an effective vision system
is crucial to safe autonomous navigation in underground terrains.
This work investigates robots- perception in underground terrains
(mines and tunnels) using statistical region merging (SRM) model.
SRM reconstructs the main structural components of an imagery
by a simple but effective statistical analysis. An investigation is
conducted on different regions of the mine, such as the shaft, stope
and gallery, using publicly available mine frames, with a stream of
locally captured mine images. An investigation is also conducted on a
stream of underground tunnel image frames, using the XBOX Kinect
3D sensors. The Kinect sensors produce streams of red, green and
blue (RGB) and depth images of 640 x 480 resolution at 30 frames per
second. Integrating the depth information to drivability gives a strong
cue to the analysis, which detects 3D results augmenting drivable and
non-drivable regions in 2D. The results of the 2D and 3D experiment
with different terrains, mines and tunnels, together with the qualitative
and quantitative evaluation, reveal that a good drivable region can be
detected in dynamic underground terrains.
Abstract: A dynamic risk management framework for software
projects is presented. Currently available software risk management
frameworks and risk assessment models are static in nature and lacks
feedback capability. Such risk management frameworks are not
capable of providing the risk assessment of futuristic changes in risk
events. A dynamic risk management framework for software project
is needed that provides futuristic assessment of risk events.
Abstract: This paper presents Simulation and experimental
study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of an adaptive artificial
neural network stabilizer on enhancing the damping torque of a
synchronous generator. For this purpose, a power system comprising
a synchronous generator feeding a large power system through a
short tie line is considered. The proposed adaptive neuro-control
system consists of two multi-layered feed forward neural networks,
which work as a plant model identifier and a controller. It generates
supplementary control signals to be utilized by conventional
controllers. The details of the interfacing circuits, sensors and
transducers, which have been designed and built for use in tests, are
presented. The synchronous generator is tested to investigate the
effect of tuning a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) on its dynamic
stability. The obtained simulation and experimental results verify the
basic theoretical concepts.
Abstract: Many high-risk pathogens that cause disease in
humans are transmitted through various food items. Food-borne
disease constitutes a major public health problem. Assessment of the
quality and safety of foods is important in human health. Rapid and
easy detection of pathogenic organisms will facilitate precautionary
measures to maintain healthy food. The Polymerase Chain Reaction
(PCR) is a handy tool for rapid detection of low numbers of bacteria.
We have designed gene specific primers for most common food
borne pathogens such as Staphylococci, Salmonella and E.coli.
Bacteria were isolated from food samples of various food outlets and
identified using gene specific PCRs. We identified Staphylococci,
Salmonella and E.coli O157 using gene specific primers by rapid and
direct PCR technique in various food samples. This study helps us in
getting a complete picture of the various pathogens that threaten to
cause and spread food borne diseases and it would also enable
establishment of a routine procedure and methodology for rapid
identification of food borne bacteria using the rapid technique of
direct PCR. This study will also enable us to judge the efficiency of
present food safety steps taken by food manufacturers and exporters.
Abstract: This research was to study a comparison of inspector-s performance between regular and complex visual inspection task. Visual task was simulated on DVD read control circuit. Inspection task was performed by using computer. Subjects were 10 undergraduate randomly selected and test for 20/20. Then, subjects were divided into two groups, five for regular inspection (control group) and five for complex inspection (treatment group) tasks. Result was showed that performance on regular and complex inspectors was significantly difference at the level of 0.05. Inspector performance on regular inspection was showed high percentage on defects detected by using equal time to complex inspection. This would be indicated that inspector performance was affected by visual inspection task.
Abstract: If organizations like Mellat Bank want to identify its
customer market completely to reach its specified goals, it can
segment the market to offer the product package to the right segment.
Our objective is to offer a segmentation model for Iran banking
market in Mellat bank view. The methodology of this project is
combined by “segmentation on the basis of four part-quality
variables" and “segmentation on the basis of different in means".
Required data are gathered from E-Systems and researcher personal
observation. Finally, the research offers the organization that at first
step form a four dimensional matrix with 756 segments using four
variables named value-based, behavioral, activity style, and activity
level, and at the second step calculate the means of profit for every
cell of matrix in two distinguished work level (levels α1:normal
condition and α2: high pressure condition) and compare the segments
by checking two conditions that are 1- homogeneity every segment
with its sub segment and 2- heterogeneity with other segments, and
so it can do the necessary segmentation process. After all, the last
offer (more explained by an operational example and feedback
algorithm) is to test and update the model because of dynamic
environment, technology, and banking system.
Abstract: Since 2008 a new economic crisis is present is the
entire planet. This crisis affects several domains of the economic but
also of the social life. Consumption decreases due to the lack of
necessary resources of households to increase their expenditures. The
car manufacturing is one of the main industrial activities in European
Union (EU) and the present crisis particularly affects it. The present
study examines the correlations between several socio-economic
indicators and car market in European Union. The target is to find out
the impact of the present economic crisis on the car market in EU.
Abstract: The present work was conducted for Arsenic (III)
removal, which one of the most poisonous groundwater pollutants, by
synthetic nano size zerovalent iron (nZVI). Batch experiments were
performed to investigate the influence of As (III), nZVI
concentration, pH of solution and contact time on the efficiency of As
(III) removal. nZVI was synthesized by reduction of ferric chloride
by sodium borohydrid. SEM and XRD were used to determine
particle size and characterization of produced nanoparticles. Up to
99.9% removal efficiency for arsenic (III) was obtained by nZVI
dosage of 1 g/L at time equal to 10 min. and pH=7. It could be
concluded that the removal efficiency were enhanced with increasing
of ZVI dosage and reaction time, but decreased with increasing of
arsenic concentration and pH for nano sized ZVI. nZVI presented an
outstanding ability to remove As (III) due to not only a high surface
area and low particle size but also to high inherent activity.
Abstract: Although oil-based drilling fluids are of paramount practical and economical interest, they represent a serious source of pollution, once released into the environment as drill cuttings. The aim of this study is to assess the capability of isolated microorganisms to degrade gasoil fuel. The commonly used physicochemical and biodegradation remediation techniques of petroleum contaminated soil were both investigated. The study revealed that natural biodegradation is favorable. Even though, the presence of heavy metals, the moisture level of (8.55%) and nutrient deficiencies put severe constrains on microorganisms- survival ranges inhibiting the biodegradation process. The selected strains were able to degrade the diesel fuel at significantly high rates (around 98%).
Abstract: The square-lattice Ising model is the simplest system
showing phase transitions (the transition between the paramagnetic
phase and the ferromagnetic phase and the transition between the
paramagnetic phase and the antiferromagnetic phase) and critical
phenomena at finite temperatures. The exact solution of the squarelattice
Ising model with free boundary conditions is not known for
systems of arbitrary size. For the first time, the exact solution of
the Ising model on the square lattice with free boundary
conditions is obtained after classifying all )
spin configurations with the microcanonical transfer matrix. Also, the
phase transitions and critical phenomena of the square-lattice Ising
model are discussed using the exact solution on the square
lattice with free boundary conditions.
Abstract: In this work, the surgical theater of a local hospital in
KSA was analyzed using simulation. The focus was on attempting to
answer questions related to how many Operating Rooms (ORs) to
open and to analyze the performance of the surgical theater in
general and mainly the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to assist
making decisions regarding PACU staffing. The surgical theater
consists of ten operating rooms and the PACU unit which has a
maximum capacity of fifteen beds. Different sequencing rules to
sequence the surgical cases were tested and the Longest Case First
(LCF) were superior to others. The results of the different
alternatives developed and tested can be used by the manager as a
tool to plan and manage the OR and PACU
Abstract: The concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in atmospheric aerosol samples collected at a rural site in Hungary (K-puszta, summer 2008), a boreal forest (Hyytiälä,
April 2007) and a polluted rural area in Italy (San Pietro Capofiume, Po Valley, April 2008). A clear distinction between “clean" and “polluted" periods was observed. Concentrations obtained for Hyytiälä are significantly lower than those for the other two sites. Source reconciliation was performed using diagnostic parameters, such as the carbon preference index and ratios between PAH. The presence of an unresolved complex mixture of hydrocarbons, especially for the Finnish and Italian samples, is indicative of petrogenic inputs. In K-puszta, the aliphatic hydrocarbons are dominated by leaf wax n-alkanes. The long range transport of anthropogenic pollution contributed to the Finnish aerosol. Industrial activities and vehicular emissions represent major sources in San Pietro Capofiume. PAH in K-puszta consist of both pyrogenic and petrogenic compounds.
Abstract: The aim of the study was to identify seat belt wearing
factor among road users in Malaysia. Evidence-based approach
through in-depth crash investigation was utilised to determine the
intended objectives. The objective was scoped into crashes
investigated by Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research
(MIROS) involving passenger vehicles within 2007 and 2010. Crash
information of a total of 99 crash cases involving 240 vehicles and
864 occupants were obtained during the study period. Statistical test
and logistic regression analysis have been performed. Results of the
analysis revealed that gender, seat position and age were associated
with seat belt wearing compliance in Malaysia. Males are 97.6%
more likely to wear seat belt compared to females (95% CI 1.317 to
2.964). By seat position, the finding indicates that frontal occupants
were 82 times more likely to be wearing seat belt (95% CI 30.199 to
225.342) as compared to rear occupants. It is also important to note
that the odds of seat belt wearing increased by about 2.64% (95% CI
1.0176 to 1.0353) for every one year increase in age. This study is
essential in understanding the Malaysian tendency in belting up
while being occupied in a vehicle. The factors highlighted in this
study should be emphasized in road safety education in order to
increase seat belt wearing rate in this country and ultimately in
preventing deaths due to road crashes.
Abstract: This paper presents a wrap-around view system with 4
smart cameras module and remote motion mobile robot control equipped with smart camera module system. The two-level scheme for
remote motion control with smart-pad(IPAD) is introduced on this
paper. In the low-level, the wrap-around view system is controlled or operated to keep the reference points lying around top view image
plane. On the higher level, a robot image based motion controller is utilized to drive the mobile platform to reach the desired position or
track the desired motion planning through image feature feedback. The
design wrap-around view system equipped on presents such advantages as follows: 1) a satisfactory solution for the FOV and affine
problem; 2) free of any complex and constraint with robot pose. The performance of the wrap-around view equipped on mobile robot
remote control is proven by experimental results.
Abstract: Tread design has evolved over the years to achieve the common tread pattern used in current vehicles. However, to meet safety and comfort requirements, tread design considers more than one design factor. Tread design must consider the grip and drainage, and the manner in which to reduce rolling noise, which is one of the main factors considered by manufacturers. The main objective of this study was the application the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique to simulate the contact surface of the tire and ground. The results demonstrated an air-Pumping and large pressure drop effect in the process of contact surface. The results also revealed that the pressure can be used to analyze sound pressure level (SPL).
Abstract: A study was undertaken to assess the potential of an
Algal Turf Scrubber to remove nitrogen from aquaculture effluent to
reduce environmental pollution. High total ammonia nitrogen
concentrations were introduced to an Algal Turf Scrubber developed
under varying hydraulic surface loading rates of African catfish
(Clarius gariepinus) effluent in a recirculating aquaculture system.
Nutrient removal rates were not affected at total suspended solids
concentration of up to 0.04g TSS/l (P > 0.05). Nitrogen removal
rates 0.93-0.99g TAN/m²/d were recorded at very high loading rates
3.76-3.81 g TAN/m²/d. Total ammonia removal showed ½ order
kinetics between 1.6 to 2.3mg/l Total Ammonia Nitrogen
concentrations. Nitrogen removal increased with its loading, which
increased with hydraulic surface loading rate. Total Ammonia
Nitrogen removal by Algal turf scrubber was higher than reported
values for fluidized bed filters and trickling filters. The algal turf
scrubber also effectively removed nitrate thereby reducing the need
for water exchange.
Abstract: This paper attempts to establish the fact that Multi
State Network Classification is essential for performance
enhancement of Transport protocols over Satellite based Networks. A
model to classify Multi State network condition taking into
consideration both congestion and channel error is evolved. In order
to arrive at such a model an analysis of the impact of congestion and
channel error on RTT values has been carried out using ns2. The
analysis results are also reported in the paper. The inference drawn
from this analysis is used to develop a novel statistical RTT based
model for multi state network classification.
An Adaptive Multi State Proactive Transport Protocol consisting
of Proactive Slow Start, State based Error Recovery, Timeout Action
and Proactive Reduction is proposed which uses the multi state
network state classification model. This paper also confirms through
detail simulation and analysis that a prior knowledge about the
overall characteristics of the network helps in enhancing the
performance of the protocol over satellite channel which is
significantly affected due to channel noise and congestion.
The necessary augmentation of ns2 simulator is done for
simulating the multi state network classification logic. This
simulation has been used in detail evaluation of the protocol under
varied levels of congestion and channel noise. The performance
enhancement of this protocol with reference to established protocols
namely TCP SACK and Vegas has been discussed. The results as
discussed in this paper clearly reveal that the proposed protocol
always outperforms its peers and show a significant improvement in
very high error conditions as envisaged in the design of the protocol.
Abstract: This paper describes a complex energy signal model
that is isomorphic with digital human fingerprint images. By using
signal models, the problem of fingerprint matching is transformed
into the signal processing problem of finding a correlation between
two complex signals that differ by phase-rotation and time-scaling. A
technique for minutiae matching that is independent of image
translation, rotation and linear-scaling, and is resistant to missing
minutiae is proposed. The method was tested using random data
points. The results show that for matching prints the scaling and
rotation angles are closely estimated and a stronger match will have a
higher correlation.
Abstract: Image-based Rendering(IBR) techniques recently
reached in broad fields which leads to a critical challenge to build up
IBR-Driven visualization platform where meets requirement of high
performance, large bounds of distributed visualization resource
aggregation and concentration, multiple operators deploying and
CSCW design employing. This paper presents an unique IBR-based
visualization dataflow model refer to specific characters of IBR
techniques and then discusses prominent feature of IBR-Driven
distributed collaborative visualization (DCV) system before finally
proposing an novel prototype. The prototype provides a well-defined
three level modules especially work as Central Visualization Server,
Local Proxy Server and Visualization Aid Environment, by which
data and control for collaboration move through them followed the
previous dataflow model. With aid of this triple hierarchy architecture
of that, IBR oriented application construction turns to be easy. The
employed augmented collaboration strategy not only achieve
convenient multiple users synchronous control and stable processing
management, but also is extendable and scalable.
Abstract: In this study, the designed dual stage membrane
bioreactor (MBR) system was conceptualized for the treatment of
cyanide and heavy metals in electroplating wastewater. The design
consisted of a primary treatment stage to reduce the impact of
fluctuations and the secondary treatment stage to remove the residual
cyanide and heavy metal contaminants in the wastewater under
alkaline pH conditions. The primary treatment stage contained
hydrolyzed Citrus sinensis (C. sinensis) pomace and the secondary
treatment stage contained active Aspergillus awamori (A. awamori)
biomass, supplemented solely with C. sinensis pomace extract from
the hydrolysis process. An average of 76.37%, 95.37%, 93.26 and
94.76% and 99.55%, 99.91%, 99.92% and 99.92% degradation
efficiency for total cyanide (T-CN), including the sorption of nickel
(Ni), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were observed after the first and
second treatment stages, respectively. Furthermore, cyanide
conversion by-products degradation was 99.81% and 99.75 for both
formate (CHOO-) and ammonium (NH4
+) after the second treatment
stage. After the first, second and third regeneration cycles of the C.
sinensis pomace in the first treatment stage, Ni, Zn and Cu removal
achieved was 99.13%, 99.12% and 99.04% (first regeneration cycle),
98.94%, 98.92% and 98.41% (second regeneration cycle) and 98.46
%, 98.44% and 97.91% (third regeneration cycle), respectively.
There was relatively insignificant standard deviation detected in all
the measured parameters in the system which indicated
reproducibility of the remediation efficiency in this continuous
system.
