Abstract: Process capability index Cpk is the most widely
used index in making managerial decisions since it provides bounds
on the process yield for normally distributed processes. However,
existent methods for assessing process performance which
constructed by statistical inference may unfortunately lead to fine
results, because uncertainties exist in most real-world applications.
Thus, this study adopts fuzzy inference to deal with testing of Cpk .
A brief score is obtained for assessing a supplier’s process instead of
a severe evaluation.
Abstract: Carbon disulfide is widely used for the production of
viscose rayon, rubber, and other organic materials and it is a
feedstock for the synthesis of sulfuric acid. The objective of this
paper is to analyze possibilities for efficient production of CS2 from
sour natural gas reformation (H2SMR) (2H2S+CH4 =CS2 +4H2) .
Also, the effect of H2S to CH4 feed ratio and reaction temperature on
carbon disulfide production is investigated numerically in a
reforming reactor. The chemical reaction model is based on an
assumed Probability Density Function (PDF) parameterized by the
mean and variance of mixture fraction and β-PDF shape. The results
show that the major factors influencing CS2 production are reactor
temperature. The yield of carbon disulfide increases with increasing
H2S to CH4 feed gas ratio (H2S/CH4≤4). Also the yield of C(s)
increases with increasing temperature until the temperature reaches
to 1000°K, and then due to increase of CS2 production and
consumption of C(s), yield of C(s) drops with further increase in the
temperature. The predicted CH4 and H2S conversion and yield of
carbon disulfide are in good agreement with result of Huang and TRaissi.
Abstract: A series of tests on cold-formed steel (CFS) wall plate system subjected to uplift force at the mid span of the wall plate is presented. The aim of the study was to study the behaviour and identify the modes of failure of CFS wall plate system. Two parameters were considered in these studies: 1) different dimension of U-bracket at the supports and 2) different sizes of lipped C-channel. The lipped C-channels used were C07508, C07512 and C10012. The dimensions of the leg of U-bracket were 50x35 mm and 50x60 mm respectively, where 25 mm clearance was provided to the connections for specimens with clearance. Results show that specimens with and without clearance experienced the same mode of failure. Failure began with the yielding of the connectors followed by distortional buckling of the wall plate. However, when C075 sections were used as wall plate, the system behaved differently. There was a large deformation in the wall plate and failure began in the distortional buckling of the wall plate followed by bearing of the connecting plates at the supports (U-bracket). The ultimate strength of the system also decreased dramatically when C075 sections were used.
Abstract: Selection of maize (Zea mays) hybrids with wide adaptability across diverse farming environments is important, prior to recommending them to achieve a high rate of hybrid adoption. Grain yield of 14 maize hybrids, tested in a randomized completeblock design with four replicates across 22 environments in Iran, was analyzed using site regression (SREG) stability model. The biplot technique facilitates a visual evaluation of superior genotypes, which is useful for cultivar recommendation and mega-environment identification. The objectives of this study were (i) identification of suitable hybrids with both high mean performance and high stability (ii) to determine mega-environments for maize production in Iran. Biplot analysis identifies two mega-environments in this study. The first mega-environments included KRM, KSH, MGN, DZF A, KRJ, DRB, DZF B, SHZ B, and KHM, where G10 hybrid was the best performing hybrid. The second mega-environment included ESF B, ESF A, and SHZ A, where G4 hybrid was the best hybrid. According to the ideal-hybrid biplot, G10 hybrid was better than all other hybrids, followed by the G1 and G3 hybrids. These hybrids were identified as best hybrids that have high grain yield and high yield stability. GGE biplot analysis provided a framework for identifying the target testing locations that discriminates genotypes that are high yielding and stable.
Abstract: The effect of extraction solvent upon properties
of carrageenan from Eucheuma cottonii was studied. The
distilled water and KOH solution (concentration 0.1- 0.5N) were
used as the solvent. Extraction process was carried out in water
bath equipped by stirrer with constant speed of 275 rpm with a
constant ratio of seaweed weight to solvent volume ( 1:50 g/mL)
at 86oC for 45 minutes. The extract was then precipitated in 3
volume of 90% ethanol, oven dried at 60oC. Based on
experimental data, alkali significantly influenced yield and
properties of extracted carrageenan. The extracted carrageenan
was found to have essentially identical FTIR spectra to the
reference samples of kappa-carrageenan. Increasing the KOH
concentration led to carrageenan containing less sulfate content
and intrinsic viscosity. The gel strength increased along with the
increasing of KOH concentration. The decreasing of intrinsic
viscosity value indicates that a polymer degradation occurs
during alkali extraction.
Abstract: The spatial variation in plant species associated with intercropping is intended to reduce resource competition between species and increase yield potential. A field experiment was carried out on corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) intercropping in a replacement series experiment with weed contamination consist of: weed free, infestation of redroot pigweed, infestation of jimsonweed and simultaneous infestation of redroot pigweed and jimsonweed in Karaj, Iran during 2007 growing season. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in factorial experiment with replicated thrice. Significant (P≤0.05) differences were observed in yield in intercropping. Corn yield was higher in intercropping, but soybean yield was significantly reduced by corn when intercropped. However, total productivity and land use efficiency were high under the intercropping system even in contamination of either species of weeds. Aggressivity of corn relative to soybean revealed the greater competitive ability of corn than soybean. Land equivalent ratio (LER) more than 1 in all treatments attributed to intercropping advantages and was highest in 50: 50 (corn/soybean) in weed free. These findings suggest that intercropping corn and soybean increase total productivity per unit area and improve land use efficiency. Considering the experimental findings, corn-soybean intercropping (50:50) may be recommended for yield advantage, more efficient utilization of resources, and weed suppression as a biological control.
Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the paradigm shift in bank
capital from the “gone concern" to the “going concern" mindset. We
then propose a methodology for pricing a product of this shift called
Contingent Capital Notes (“CoCos"). The Merton Model can
determine a price for credit risk by using the firm-s equity value as a
call option on those assets. Our pricing methodology for CoCos also
uses the credit spread implied by the Merton Model in a subsequent
derivative form created by John Hull et al . Here, a market implied
asset volatility is calculated by using observed market CDS spreads.
This implied asset volatility is then used to estimate the probability of
triggering a predetermined “contingency event" given the distanceto-
trigger (DTT). The paper then investigates the effect of varying
DTTs and recovery assumptions on the CoCo yield. We conclude
with an investment rationale.
Abstract: The main aim of the current study was to examine the
effect of emotional intelligence on retention. The study also aimed at
analyzing the role of job involvement, as a moderator, in the effect of
emotional intelligence on retention. Using data gathered from 241
employees working with hotels and tourism corporations listed in
Amman Stock Exchange in Jordan, emotional intelligence, job
involvement and retention were measured. Hierarchical regression
analyses were used to test the three main hypotheses. Results
indicated that retention was related to emotional intelligence.
Moreover, the study yielded support for the claim that job
involvement had a moderating effect on the relationship between
emotional intelligence and retention.
Abstract: Enzymatic saccharification of biomass for reducing
sugar production is one of the crucial processes in biofuel production
through biochemical conversion. In this study, enzymatic
saccharification of dilute potassium hydroxide (KOH) pre-treated
Tetraselmis suecica biomass was carried out by using cellulase
enzyme obtained from Trichoderma longibrachiatum. Initially, the
pre-treatment conditions were optimised by changing alkali reagent
concentration, retention time for reaction, and temperature. The T.
suecica biomass after pre-treatment was also characterized using
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra and Scanning Electron
Microscope. These analyses revealed that the functional group such
as acetyl and hydroxyl groups, structure and surface of T. suecica
biomass were changed through pre-treatment, which is favourable for
enzymatic saccharification process. Comparison of enzymatic
saccharification of untreated and pre-treated microalgal biomass
indicated that higher level of reducing sugar can be obtained from
pre-treated T. suecica. Enzymatic saccharification of pre-treated T.
suecica biomass was optimised by changing temperature, pH, and
enzyme concentration to solid ratio ([E]/[S]). Highest conversion of
carbohydrate into reducing sugar of 95% amounted to reducing sugar
yield of 20 (wt%) from pre-treated T. suecica was obtained from
saccharification, at temperature: 40°C, pH: 4.5 and [E]/[S] of 0.1
after 72 h of incubation. Hydrolysate obtained from enzymatic
saccharification of pretreated T. suecica biomass was further
fermented into biobutanol using Clostridium saccharoperbutyliticum
as biocatalyst. The results from this study demonstrate a positive
prospect of application of dilute alkaline pre-treatment to enhance
enzymatic saccharification and biobutanol production from
microalgal biomass.
Abstract: Image Compression using Artificial Neural Networks
is a topic where research is being carried out in various directions
towards achieving a generalized and economical network.
Feedforward Networks using Back propagation Algorithm adopting
the method of steepest descent for error minimization is popular and
widely adopted and is directly applied to image compression.
Various research works are directed towards achieving quick
convergence of the network without loss of quality of the restored
image. In general the images used for compression are of different
types like dark image, high intensity image etc. When these images
are compressed using Back-propagation Network, it takes longer
time to converge. The reason for this is, the given image may
contain a number of distinct gray levels with narrow difference with
their neighborhood pixels. If the gray levels of the pixels in an image
and their neighbors are mapped in such a way that the difference in
the gray levels of the neighbors with the pixel is minimum, then
compression ratio as well as the convergence of the network can be
improved. To achieve this, a Cumulative distribution function is
estimated for the image and it is used to map the image pixels. When
the mapped image pixels are used, the Back-propagation Neural
Network yields high compression ratio as well as it converges
quickly.
Abstract: In this study, a synthetic pathway was created by
assembling genes from Clostridium butyricum and Escherichia coli
in different combinations. Among the genes were dhaB1 and dhaB2
from C. butyricum VPI1718 coding for glycerol dehydratase (GDHt)
and its activator (GDHtAc), respectively, involved in the conversion
of glycerol to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA). The yqhD gene
from E.coli BL21 was also included which codes for an NADPHdependent
1,3-propanediol oxidoreductase isoenzyme (PDORI)
reducing 3-HPA to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD). Molecular modeling
analysis indicated that the conformation of fusion protein of YQHD
and DHAB1 was favorable for direct molecular channeling of the
intermediate 3-HPA. According to the simulation results, the yqhD
and dhaB1 gene were assembled in the upstream of dhaB2 to express
a fusion protein, yielding the recombinant strain E. coliBL21
(DE3)//pET22b+::yqhD-dhaB1_dhaB2 (strain BP41Y3). Strain
BP41Y3 gave 10-fold higher 1,3-PD concentration than E. coliBL21
(DE3)//pET22b+::yqhD-dhaB1_dhaB2 (strain BP31Y2) expressing
the recombinant enzymes simultaneously but in a non-fusion mode.
This is the first report using a gene fusion approach to enhance the
biological conversion of glycerol to the value added compound 1,3-
PD.
Abstract: Electrocardiogram (ECG) segmentation is necessary to help reduce the time consuming task of manually annotating ECG's. Several algorithms have been developed to segment the ECG automatically. We first review several of such methods, and then present a new single lead segmentation method based on Adaptive piecewise constant approximation (APCA) and Piecewise derivative dynamic time warping (PDDTW). The results are tested on the QT database. We compared our results to Laguna's two lead method. Our proposed approach has a comparable mean error, but yields a slightly higher standard deviation than Laguna's method.
Abstract: The purpose of this article applies the monthly final
energy yield and failure data of 202 PV systems installed in Taiwan to
analyze the PV operational performance and system availability. This
data is collected by Industrial Technology Research Institute through
manual records. Bad data detection and failure data estimation
approaches are proposed to guarantee the quality of the received
information. The performance ratio value and system availability are
then calculated and compared with those of other countries. It is
indicated that the average performance ratio of Taiwan-s PV systems
is 0.74 and the availability is 95.7%. These results are similar with
those of Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Japan.

Abstract: The major problem that wireless communication
systems undergo is multipath fading caused by scattering of the
transmitted signal. However, we can treat multipath propagation as
multiple channels between the transmitter and receiver to improve
the signal-to-scattering-noise ratio. While using Single Input
Multiple Output (SIMO) systems, the diversity receivers extract
multiple signal branches or copies of the same signal received from
different channels and apply gain combining schemes such as Root
Mean Square Gain Combining (RMSGC). RMSGC asymptotically
yields an identical performance to that of the theoretically optimal
Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) for values of mean Signal-to-
Noise-Ratio (SNR) above a certain threshold value without the need
for SNR estimation. This paper introduces an improvement of
RMSGC using two different issues. We found that post-detection and
de-noising the received signals improve the performance of RMSGC
and lower the threshold SNR.

Abstract: The study was designed to develop a measurement of
the positive emotion regulation questionnaire (PERQ) that assesses
positive emotion regulation strategies through self-report. The 14
items developed for the surveying instrument of the study were based
upon literatures regarding elements of positive regulation strategies.
319 elementary students (age ranging from 12 to14) were recruited
among three public elementary schools to survey on their use of
positive emotion regulation strategies. Of 319 subjects, 20 invalid
questionnaire s yielded a response rate of 92%. The data collected
wasanalyzed through methods such as item analysis, factor analysis,
and structural equation models. In reference to the results from item
analysis, the formal survey instrument was reduced to 11 items. A
principal axis factor analysis with varimax was performed on
responses, resulting in a 2-factor equation (savoring strategy and
neutralizing strategy), which accounted for 55.5% of the total
variance. Then, the two-factor structure of scale was also identified by
structural equation models. Finally, the reliability coefficients of the
two factors were Cronbach-s α .92 and .74. Gender difference was
only found in savoring strategy. In conclusion, the positive emotion
regulation strategies questionnaire offers a brief, internally consistent,
and valid self-report measure for understanding the emotional
regulation strategies of children that may be useful to researchers and
applied professionals.
Abstract: This paper presents the simulation of fragmentation
warhead using a hydrocode, Autodyn. The goal of this research is to
determine the lethal range of such a warhead. This study investigates
the lethal range of warheads with and without steel balls as
preformed fragments. The results from the FE simulation, i.e. initial
velocities and ejected spray angles of fragments, are further processed
using an analytical approach so as to determine a fragment hit density
and probability of kill of a modelled warhead. In order to simulate a
plenty of preformed fragments inside a warhead, the model requires
expensive computation resources. Therefore, this study attempts to
model the problem in an alternative approach by considering an
equivalent mass of preformed fragments to the mass of warhead
casing. This approach yields approximately 7% and 20% difference
of fragment velocities from the analytical results for one and two
layers of preformed fragments, respectively. The lethal ranges of the
simulated warheads are 42.6 m and 56.5 m for warheads with one and
two layers of preformed fragments, respectively, compared to 13.85
m for a warhead without preformed fragment. These lethal ranges are
based on the requirement of fragment hit density. The lethal ranges
which are based on the probability of kill are 27.5 m, 61 m and 70 m
for warheads with no preformed fragment, one and two layers of
preformed fragments, respectively.
Abstract: Biodiesel production with used frying by
transesterification reaction with methanol, using a commercial
kaolinite thermally-activated solid acid catalyst was investigated.
The surface area, the average pore diameter and pore volume of the
kaolinite catalyst were 10 m2/g, 13.0 nm and 30 mm3/g, respectively.
The optimal conditions for the transesterification reaction were
determined to be oil/methanol, in a molar ratio 1:31, temperature 160
ºC and catalyst concentration of 3% (w/w). The yield of fatty acids
methyl esters (FAME) was 92.4% after 2 h of reaction. This method
of preparation of biodiesel can be a positive alternative for utilizing
used frying corn oil for feedstock of biodiesel combined with the
inexpensive catalyst.
Abstract: the current study presents a modeling framework to determine the torsion strength of an induction hardened splined shaft by considering geometry and material aspects with the aim to optimize the static torsion strength by selection of spline geometry and hardness depth. Six different spline geometries and seven different hardness profiles including non-hardened and throughhardened shafts have been considered. The results reveal that the torque that causes initial yielding of the induction hardened splined shaft is strongly dependent on the hardness depth and the geometry of the spline teeth. Guidelines for selection of the appropriate hardness depth and spline geometry are given such that an optimum static torsion strength of the component can be achieved.
