Abstract: The objective of this article is to discuss the potential
of economic analysis as a tool for identification and evaluation of
corruption in legislative acts. We propose that corruption be
perceived as a risk variable within the legislative process. Therefore
we find it appropriate to employ risk analysis methods, used in
various fields of economics, for the evaluation of corruption in
legislation. Furthermore we propose the incorporation of these
methods into the so called corruption impact assessment (CIA), the
general framework for detection of corruption in legislative acts. The
applications of the risk analysis methods are demonstrated on
examples of implementation of proposed CIA in the Czech Republic.
Abstract: The performance of time-reversal MUSIC algorithm will be dramatically degrades in presence of strong noise and multiple scattering (i.e. when scatterers are close to each other). This is due to error in determining the number of scatterers. The present paper provides a new approach to alleviate such a problem using an information theoretic criterion referred as minimum description length (MDL). The merits of the novel approach are confirmed by the numerical examples. The results indicate the time-reversal MUSIC yields accurate estimate of the target locations with considerable noise and multiple scattering in the received signals.
Abstract: In this paper a controller for the pitch angle of an
aircraft regarding to the elevator deflection angle is designed.
The way how the elevator angle affects pitching motion of the
aircraft is pointed out, as well as, how a pitch controller can be
applied for the aircraft to reach certain pitch angle. In this digital
optimal system, the elevator deflection angle and pitching angle
of the plane are considered to be input and output respectively.
A single input single output (SISO) system is presented. A
digital pitch aircraft control is demonstrated. A simulation for
the whole system has been performed. The optimal control
weighting vectors, Q and R have been determined.
Abstract: The nature of consumer products causes the difficulty
in forecasting the future demands and the accuracy of the forecasts
significantly affects the overall performance of the supply chain
system. In this study, two data mining methods, artificial neural
network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM), were utilized to
predict the demand of consumer products. The training data used was
the actual demand of six different products from a consumer product
company in Thailand. The results indicated that SVM had a better
forecast quality (in term of MAPE) than ANN in every category of
products. Moreover, another important finding was the margin
difference of MAPE from these two methods was significantly high
when the data was highly correlated.
Abstract: The breakdown strength characteristic of Low Density
Polyethylene films (LDPE) under DC voltage application and the
effect of water absorption have been studied. Mainly, our experiment
was investigated under two conditions; dry and heavy water
absorption. Under DC ramp voltage, the result found that the
breakdown strength under heavy water absorption has a lower value
than dry condition. In order to clarify the effect, the temperature rise of
film was observed using non contact thermograph until the occurrence
of the electrical breakdown and the conduction current of the sample
was also measured in correlation with the thermograph measurement.
From the observations, it was shown that under the heavy water
absorption, the hot spot in the samples appeared at lower voltage. At
the same voltage the temperature of the hot spot and conduction
current was higher than that under the dry condition. The measurement
result has a good correlation between the existence of a critical field
for conduction current and thermograph observation. In case of the
heavy water absorption, the occurrence of the threshold field was
earlier than the dry condition as result lead to higher of conduction
current and the temperature rise appears after threshold field was
significantly increased in increasing of field. The higher temperature
rise was caused by the higher current conduction as the result the
insulation leads to breakdown to the lower field application.
Abstract: To study on effect of PEG and NaCl stress on
germination and early seedling stages on two cultivar of corn, two
separated experiment were laid out at physiology laboratory, faculty
of Agriculture, Razi University, Kermanshah, Iran in 2009. This
investigation was performed as factorial experiment under Complete
Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Cultivar factor
contains of two varieties (sweet corn SC403 and Flint corn SC704)
and five levels of stress (0, -2, -4, -6 and -8 bar). The principal aim of
current study was to compare the two varieties of maize in relative to
the stress conditions. Results indicated that significant decrease was
observed in percentage of germination, germination rate, length of
radicle and plumule and radicle and plumule dry matter. On the basis
of the results, NaCl as compared with PEG had more effect on
germination and early seedling stage and sweet corn had more
resistant than flint corn in both stress conditions.
Abstract: In this paper, the Gaussian type quadrature rules for fuzzy functions are discussed. The errors representation and convergence theorems are given. Moreover, four kinds of Gaussian type quadrature rules with error terms for approximate of fuzzy integrals are presented. The present paper complements the theoretical results of the paper by T. Allahviranloo and M. Otadi [T. Allahviranloo, M. Otadi, Gaussian quadratures for approximate of fuzzy integrals, Applied Mathematics and Computation 170 (2005) 874-885]. The obtained results are illustrated by solving some numerical examples.
Abstract: A simple method for the simultaneous determination
of hippuric acid and benzoic acid in urine using reversed-phase high
performance liquid chromatography was described. Chromatography
was performed on a Nova-Pak C18 (3.9 x 150 mm) column with a
mobile phase of mixed solution methanol: water: acetic acid
(20:80:0.2) and UV detection at 254 nm. The calibration curve was
linear within concentration range at 0.125 to 6.0 mg/ml of hippuric
acid and benzoic acid. The recovery, accuracy and coefficient
variance of hippuric acid were 104.54%, 0.2% and 0.2% respectively
and for benzoic acid were 98.48%, 1.25% and 0.60% respectively.
The detection limit of this method was 0.01ng/l for hippuric acid and
0.06ng/l for benzoic acid. This method has been applied to the
analysis of urine samples from the suspected of toluene abuser or
glue sniffer among secondary school students at Johor Bahru.
Abstract: Biodiesel is traditionally produced from oleaginous
plants. On the other hand, increasing biodiesel production from these
raw materials could create problems of food supply. Producing
biodiesel from microalgae could help to overcome this difficulty,
because microalgae are rich in lipids and do not compete for arable
lands. However, no studies had compared vegetable and microalgae
oil-based biodiesel in terms of yield, viscosity and heat of
combustion. In the present study, commercial canola and microalgae
oil were therefore transesterified with methanol under a homogenous
alkali catalyst (potassium hydroxide) at 100oC for 1h. The result
showed that microalgae-based oil has a higher yield in biodiesel with
89.7% (g biodiesel/g oil) and a lower kinematic viscosity (22oC) of
4.31 mm/s2 than canola oil.
Abstract: Vermicomposting is the conversion of organic waste
into bio-fertilizers through the action of earthworm. This technology
is widely used for organic solid waste management. Waste corn pulp
blended with cow dung manure was vermicomposted over 30 days
using Eisenia fetida earthworms species. pH, temperature, moisture
content, and electrical conductivity were daily monitored. The
feedstock, vermicompost and vermiwash were analyzed for nutrient
composition. The average temperature and moisture content in the
vermi-reactor was 22.5°C and 42.5% respectively. The vermicompost
and vermiwash had an almost neutral pH whilst the electrical
conductivity was 21% higher in the vermicompost. The nitrogen and
potassium content was 57% and 79.6% richer in the vermicompost
respectively compared to the vermiwash. However, the vermiwash
was 84% richer in phosphorous as compared to vermicompost.
Furthermore, the vermiwash was 89.1% and 97.6% richer in Ca and
Mg respectively and was 97.8% richer in Na salts compared to the
vermicompost. The vermiwash also indicated a significantly higher
amount of micronutrients. Both bio-fertilizers were rich in nutrients
specification for fertilizers.
Abstract: In this work we study analytically and numerically the
performance of the mean heave motion of an OWC coupled with the
governing equation of the spreading ocean waves due to the wide
variation in an open parabolic channel with constant depth. This
paper considers that the ocean wave propagation is under the
assumption of a shallow flow condition. In order to verify the effect
of the waves in the OWC firstly we establish the analytical model in
a non-dimensional form based on the energy equation. The proposed
wave-power system has to aims: one is to perturb the ocean waves as
a consequence of the channel shape in order to concentrate the
maximum ocean wave amplitude in the neighborhood of the OWC
and the second is to determine the pressure and volume oscillation of
air inside the compression chamber.
Abstract: A complete CAD procedure to model a twisted-bladed
vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) is presented with the aim of
determining some practical guidelines to be used for the generation
of an easily-meshable CAD geometry to be adopted as the basis of
both CFD and FEM numerical simulations.
Abstract: Malting is usually carried out on intact barley seed,
while hull is still attached to it. In this study, oat grain with and
without hull was subjected to controlled germination to optimize its
enzymes activity, in such a way that lipase has the lowest and α-
amylase and proteinase the highest activities. Since pH has a great
impact on the activity of the enzymes, the pH of germination media
was set up to 3 to 8. In dehulled oats, lipase and α-amylase had the
lowest and highest activities in pHs 3 and 6, respectively whereas the
highest proteinase activity was evidenced at pH 7 and 4 in the oats
with and without hull respectively. While measurements indicated
that the effect of hull on the enzyme activities particularly in lipase
and amylase at each level of the pH are significantly different, the
best results were obtained in those samples in which their hull had
been removed. However, since the similar lipase activity in
germinated dehulled oat were recorded at the pHs 4 and 5, therefore
it was concluded that pH 5 in dehulled oat seed may provide the
optimum enzyme activity for all the enzymes.

Abstract: Discovering new biological knowledge from the highthroughput biological data is a major challenge to bioinformatics today. To address this challenge, we developed a new approach for protein classification. Proteins that are evolutionarily- and thereby functionally- related are said to belong to the same classification. Identifying protein classification is of fundamental importance to document the diversity of the known protein universe. It also provides a means to determine the functional roles of newly discovered protein sequences. Our goal is to predict the functional classification of novel protein sequences based on a set of features extracted from each protein sequence. The proposed technique used datasets extracted from the Structural Classification of Proteins (SCOP) database. A set of spectral domain features based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is used. The proposed classifier uses multilayer back propagation (MLBP) neural network for protein classification. The maximum classification accuracy is about 91% when applying the classifier to the full four levels of the SCOP database. However, it reaches a maximum of 96% when limiting the classification to the family level. The classification results reveal that spectral domain contains information that can be used for classification with high accuracy. In addition, the results emphasize that sequence similarity measures are of great importance especially at the family level.
Abstract: This is a cross-cultural study that determines South
African multinational enterprises (MNEs) entry strategies as they
invest in Africa. An integrated theoretical framework comprising the
transaction cost theory, Uppsala model, eclectic paradigm and the
distance framework was adopted. A sample of 40 South African
MNEs with 415 existing FDI entries in Africa was drawn. Using an
ordered logistic regression model, the impact of culture on the choice
of degree of control by South African MNEs in Africa was
determined. Cultural distance was one of significant factors that
influenced South African MNEs- choice of degree of control.
Furthermore, South African MNEs are risk averse in all countries in
Africa but minimize the risks differently across sectors. Service
sectors chooses to own their subsidiaries 100% and avoid dealing
with the locals while manufacturing, resources and construction
choose to have a local partner to share the risk.
Abstract: Renewed interest in propeller propulsion on aircraft
configurations combined with higher propeller loads lead to the question how the effects of the propulsion on model support disturbances
should be accounted for. In this paper, the determination of engine power effects on support interference of sting-mounted models is
demonstrated by a measurement on a four-engine turboprop aircraft.
CFD results on a more generic model are presented in order to clarify
the possible mechanism behind engine power effects on support
interference. The engine slipstream induces a local change in angle
of sideslip at the model sting thereby influencing the sting near-field and far-field effects. Whether or not the net result of these changes
in the disturbance pattern leads to a significant engine power effect depends on the configuration of the wind tunnel model and the test
setup.
Abstract: This paper presented two new efficient algorithms
for contour approximation. The proposed algorithm is compared
with Ramer (good quality), Triangle (faster) and Trapezoid (fastest)
in this work; which are briefly described. Cartesian co-ordinates of
an input contour are processed in such a manner that finally
contours is presented by a set of selected vertices of the edge of the
contour. In the paper the main idea of the analyzed procedures for
contour compression is performed. For comparison, the mean
square error and signal-to-noise ratio criterions are used.
Computational time of analyzed methods is estimated depending on
a number of numerical operations. Experimental results are
obtained both in terms of image quality, compression ratios, and
speed. The main advantages of the analyzed algorithm is small
numbers of the arithmetic operations compared to the existing
algorithms.
Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the
effect of abdominal exercises versus abdominal supporting
belt on abdominal efficiency and inter-recti separation
following vaginal delivery.30 primiparous post-natal women
participated in this study. Their age ranged from (25 - 35)
years and their BMI < 30 Kg/m2. Participants were assigned
randomly into 2groups, participants of group (A) used
abdominal belt from the 2nd day following delivery, till the end
of puerperium (6 weeks), while participants of group (B)
engaged into abdominal exercises program from the 2nd day
following delivery for 6 weeks. The results of the present
study revealed that although there was no statistical difference
in waist circumference between both groups, participation in
abdominal exercise program produced a pronounced reduction
in waist/hip ratio, and inter-recti separation and also caused
significant increase in abdominal muscles strength (peak
torque, maximum repetition total work and average power)
higher than the use of abdominal belt.
Abstract: The role of neighborhood center as semi public (the
balance space) is disappeared in bonding between private and public
in new urbanism. In this way, a hierarchical principle in the
traditional neighborhood center appears to create or develop the
conditions for residents` relationships and belonging. This paper
evaluates significant of hierarchical principles of the neighborhood
center in residents` territoriality and its factors. In this way Miandeh
neighborhood center from Boshrooyeh city was determined as a case
study area. Results indicated that a hierarchical principle is the best
instrument to improve the territoriality as the subcomponent of place
belonging in residents. The findings help the urban designer to
revitalization the neighborhoods and proceedings in organization of
physical space.
