Abstract: This paper investigates the solutions of two-point fuzzy boundary value problems as the form x = f(t, x(t)), x(0) = A and x(l) = B, where A and B are fuzzy numbers. There are four different solutions for the problems when the lateral type of H-derivative is employed to solve the problems. As f(t, x) is a monotone function of x, these four solutions are reduced to two different solutions. As f(t, x(t)) = λx(t) or f(t, x(t)) = -λx(t), solutions and several comparison results are presented to indicate advantages of each solution.
Abstract: Deployment of pneumatic muscles in various
industrial applications is still in its early days, considering the relative
newness of these components. The field of robotics holds particular
future potential for pneumatic muscles, especially in view of their
specific behaviour known as compliance. The paper presents and
discusses an innovative constructive solution for a gripper system
mountable on an industrial robot, based on actuation by a linear
pneumatic muscle and transmission of motion by gear and rack
mechanism. The structural, operational and constructive models of
the new gripper are presented, along with some of the experimental
results obtained subsequently to the testing of a prototype. Further
presented are two control variants of the gripper system, one by
means of a 3/2-way fast-switching solenoid valve, the other by means
of a proportional pressure regulator. Advantages and disadvantages
are discussed for both variants.
Abstract: The scientific achievements coming from molecular
biology depend greatly on the capability of computational
applications to analyze the laboratorial results. A comprehensive
analysis of an experiment requires typically the simultaneous study
of the obtained dataset with data that is available in several distinct
public databases. Nevertheless, developing a centralized access to
these distributed databases rises up a set of challenges such as: what
is the best integration strategy, how to solve nomenclature clashes,
how to solve database overlapping data and how to deal with huge
datasets. In this paper we present GeNS, a system that uses a simple and yet innovative approach to address several biological data integration issues. Compared with existing systems, the main
advantages of GeNS are related to its maintenance simplicity and to its coverage and scalability, in terms of number of supported
databases and data types. To support our claims we present the current use of GeNS in two concrete applications. GeNS currently contains more than 140 million of biological relations and it can be
publicly downloaded or remotely access through SOAP web services.
Abstract: Thermo-chemical treatment (TCT) such as pyrolysis
is getting recognized as a valid route for (i) materials and valuable
products and petrochemicals recovery; (ii) waste recycling; and (iii)
elemental characterization. Pyrolysis is also receiving renewed
attention for its operational, economical and environmental
advantages. In this study, samples of polyethylene terephthalate
(PET) and polystyrene (PS) were pyrolysed in a microthermobalance
reactor (using a thermogravimetric-TGA setup). Both
polymers were prepared and conditioned prior to experimentation.
The main objective was to determine the kinetic parameters of the
depolymerization reactions that occur within the thermal degradation
process. Overall kinetic rate constants (ko) and activation energies
(Eo) were determined using the general kinetics theory (GKT)
method previously used by a number of authors. Fitted correlations
were found and validated using the GKT, errors were within ± 5%.
This study represents a fundamental step to pave the way towards the
development of scaling relationship for the investigation of larger
scale reactors relevant to industry.
Abstract: Network-Centric Air Defense Missile Systems
(NCADMS) represents the superior development of the air defense
missile systems and has been regarded as one of the major research
issues in military domain at present. Due to lack of knowledge and
experience on NCADMS, modeling and simulation becomes an effective
approach to perform operational analysis, compared with
those equation based ones. However, the complex dynamic interactions
among entities and flexible architectures of NCADMS put forward
new requirements and challenges to the simulation framework
and models. ABS (Agent-Based Simulations) explicitly addresses
modeling behaviors of heterogeneous individuals. Agents have capability
to sense and understand things, make decisions, and act on the
environment. They can also cooperate with others dynamically to
perform the tasks assigned to them. ABS proves an effective approach
to explore the new operational characteristics emerging in
NCADMS. In this paper, based on the analysis of network-centric
architecture and new cooperative engagement strategies for
NCADMS, an agent-based simulation framework by expanding the
simulation framework in the so-called System Effectiveness Analysis
Simulation (SEAS) was designed. The simulation framework specifies
components, relationships and interactions between them, the
structure and behavior rules of an agent in NCADMS. Based on scenario
simulations, information and decision superiority and operational
advantages in NCADMS were analyzed; meanwhile some
suggestions were provided for its future development.
Abstract: Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing process with capabilities that include: producing new
part directly from 3 Dimensional Computer Aided Design (3D CAD)
model, building new part on the existing old component and repairing an existing high valued component parts that would have
been discarded in the past. With all these capabilities and its advantages over other additive manufacturing techniques, the
underlying physics of the LMD process is yet to be fully understood probably because of high interaction between the processing
parameters and studying many parameters at the same time makes it
further complex to understand. In this study, the effect of laser power
and powder flow rate on physical properties (deposition height and
deposition width), metallurgical property (microstructure) and
mechanical (microhardness) properties on laser deposited most
widely used aerospace alloy are studied. Also, because the Ti6Al4V
is very expensive, and LMD is capable of reducing buy-to-fly ratio
of aerospace parts, the material utilization efficiency is also studied.
Four sets of experiments were performed and repeated to establish repeatability using laser power of 1.8 kW and 3.0 kW, powder flow
rate of 2.88 g/min and 5.67 g/min, and keeping the gas flow rate and
scanning speed constant at 2 l/min and 0.005 m/s respectively. The
deposition height / width are found to increase with increase in laser
power and increase in powder flow rate. The material utilization is favoured by higher power while higher powder flow rate reduces
material utilization. The results are presented and fully discussed.
Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the
advantages of using large-diameter 0.7 inch prestressing strands in
pretention applications. The advantages of large-diameter strands are
mainly beneficial in the heavy construction applications. Bridges and
tunnels are subjected to a higher daily traffic with an exponential
increase in trucks ultimate weight, which raise the demand for higher
structural capacity of bridges and tunnels. In this research, precast
prestressed I-girders were considered as a case study. Flexure
capacities of girders fabricated using 0.7 inch strands and different
concrete strengths were calculated and compared to capacities of 0.6
inch strands girders fabricated using equivalent concrete strength.
The effect of bridge deck concrete strength on composite deck-girder
section capacity was investigated due to its possible effect on final
section capacity. Finally, a comparison was made to compare the
bridge cross-section of girders designed using regular 0.6 inch strands
and the large-diameter 0.7 inch. The research findings showed that
structural advantages of 0.7 inch strands allow for using fewer bridge
girders, reduced material quantity, and light-weight members. The
structural advantages of 0.7 inch strands are maximized when high
strength concrete (HSC) are used in girder fabrication, and concrete
of minimum 5ksi compressive strength is used in pouring bridge
decks. The use of 0.7 inch strands in bridge industry can partially
contribute to the improvement of bridge conditions, minimize
construction cost, and reduce the construction duration of the project.
Abstract: In this paper a new maximum power point tracking
algorithm for photovoltaic arrays is proposed. The algorithm detects
the maximum power point of the PV. The computed maximum
power is used as a reference value (set point) of the control system.
ON/OFF power controller with hysteresis band is used to control the
operation of a Buck chopper such that the PV module always
operates at its maximum power computed from the MPPT algorithm.
The major difference between the proposed algorithm and other
techniques is that the proposed algorithm is used to control directly
the power drawn from the PV.
The proposed MPPT has several advantages: simplicity, high
convergence speed, and independent on PV array characteristics. The
algorithm is tested under various operating conditions. The obtained
results have proven that the MPP is tracked even under sudden
change of irradiation level.
Abstract: Several methods have been proposed for color image
compression but the reconstructed image had very low signal to noise
ratio which made it inefficient. This paper describes a lossy
compression technique for color images which overcomes the
drawbacks. The technique works on spatial domain where the pixel
values of RGB planes of the input color image is mapped onto two
dimensional planes. The proposed technique produced better results
than JPEG2000, 2DPCA and a comparative study is reported based
on the image quality measures such as PSNR and MSE.Experiments
on real time images are shown that compare this methodology with
previous ones and demonstrate its advantages.
Abstract: The use of additions in cement in manufacturing,
mortar and concrete offers economic and ecological advantages. Cements with additions such as limestone, slag and natural
pouzzolana are produced in cement factories in Algeria. Several studies analyzed the effect of these additions on the physical and
mechanical properties as well as the durability of concrete. However,
few studies were conducted on the effect of local metakaolin on
mechanical properties and durability of concrete. The main purpose
of this paper is to analyze the performance of mortar and concrete with local metakaolin. The preparation of the metakaolin was carried
out by calcination of kaolin at a temperature of 850 °C for a period of 3 hours. The experimental results have shown that the rates of
substitutions of 10 and 15% metakaolin increases the compressive
strength and flexural strength at both early age and long term. The durability and the permeability were also improved by reducing the
coefficient of sorptivity.
Abstract: Atmospheric plasma is emerging as a promising
technology for many industrial sectors, because of its ecological and
economic advantages respect to the traditional production processes.
For textile industry, atmospheric plasma is becoming a valid
alternative to the conventional wet processes, but the plasma
machines realized so far do not allow the treatment of fibrous
mechanically weak material.
Novel atmospheric plasma machine for industrial applications,
developed by VenetoNanotech SCpA in collaboration with Italian
producer of corona equipment ME.RO SpA is presented. The main
feature of this pre-industrial scale machine is the possibility of the inline
plasma treatment of delicate fibrous substrates such as fibre
sleeves, for example wool tops, cotton fibres, polymeric tows,
mineral fibers and so on, avoiding burnings and disruption of the
faint materials.
Abstract: Overhead conveyor systems satisfy by their simple
construction, wide application range and their full compatibility with
other manufacturing systems, which are designed according to
international standards. Ultra-light overhead conveyor systems are
rope-based conveying systems with individually driven vehicles. The
vehicles can move automatically on the rope and this can be realized
by energy and signals. Crossings are realized by switches. Overhead
conveyor systems are particularly used in the automotive industry but
also at post offices. Overhead conveyor systems always must be
integrated with a logistical process by finding the best way for a
cheaper material flow and in order to guarantee precise and fast
workflows. With their help, any transport can take place without
wasting ground and space, without excessive company capacity, lost
or damaged products, erroneous delivery, endless travels and without
wasting time. Ultra-light overhead conveyor systems provide optimal
material flow, which produces profit and saves time. This article
illustrates the advantages of the structure of the ultra-light overhead
conveyor systems in logistics applications and explains the steps of
their system design. After an illustration of the steps, currently
available systems on the market will be shown by means of their
technical characteristics. Due to their simple construction, demands
to an ultra-light overhead conveyor system will be illustrated.
Abstract: In this paper, the computation of the electrical field distribution around AC high-voltage lines is demonstrated. The advantages and disadvantages of two different methods are described to evaluate the electrical field quantity. The first method is a seminumerical method using the laws of electrostatic techniques to simulate the two-dimensional electric field under the high-voltage overhead line. The second method which will be discussed is the finite element method (FEM) using specific boundary conditions to compute the two- dimensional electric field distributions in an efficient way.
Abstract: This study developed a high efficient and combined
biological and chemical filter treatment process. This process used
PAC (Powder Activated Carbon), Alum and attached growth
treatment process. The system removals of total nitrogen and total
phosphorus ratio of two were as high as 70% and 73%, moreover, the
effluent water was suitable to urban and agricultural water. Also the
advantages of this process are not only occupies small place but is
simple, economic and easy operating. Besides, our developed process
can keep stable process efficiency even in relative low load level.
Therefore, this study judges that use of the high efficient and
combined biological and chemical filter treatment process, it is
expected that the effluent water in this system can be reused as urban
and agricultural water.
Abstract: This paper proposes a three-dimensional motion capture and feedback system of flying disc throwing action learners with use of Kinect device. Rather than conventional 3-D motion capture system, Kinect has advantages of cost merit, easy system development and operation. A novice learner of flying disc is trained to keep arm movement in steady height, to twist the waist, and to stretch the elbow according to the waist angle. The proposing system captures learners- body movement, checks their skeleton positions in pre-motion / motion / post-motion in several ways, and displays feedback messages to refine their actions.
Abstract: One part of the total employee’s reward is apart from basic wages or salary, employee’s benefits and intangible remuneration also so called contingent (variable) pay. Contingent pay is connected to performance, contribution, cap competency or skills of individual employees, and to team’s or company-wide performance or to combination of few of the mentioned possibilities. Sometimes among the contingent pay is also incorporated the remuneration based on length of employment, when the financial reward is not connected to performance or skills, but to length of continuous employment either on one working position or in one level of remuneration scale. Main aim of this article is to define, based on available information, contingent pay, describe individual forms, its advantages and disadvantages and possibilities to utilization in practice; but also bring information not only about its extent and level of utilization of contingent pay by companies in one of the Czech Republic’s regions, but also mention their practical experience with this type of remuneration.
Abstract: Natural frequencies and dynamic response of a spur
gear sector are investigated using a two dimensional finite element
model that offers significant advantages for dynamic gear analyses.
The gear teeth are analyzed for different operating speeds. A primary
feature of this modeling is determination of mesh forces using a
detailed contact analysis for each time step as the gears roll through
the mesh. ANSYS software has been used on the proposed model to
find the natural frequencies by Block Lanczos technique and
displacements and dynamic stresses by transient mode super position
method. The effect of rotational speed of the gear on the dynamic
response of gear tooth has been studied and design limits have been
discussed.
Abstract: In this paper, we explore the applicability of the Sinc-
Collocation method to a three-dimensional (3D) oceanography model.
The model describes a wind-driven current with depth-dependent
eddy viscosity in the complex-velocity system. In general, the
Sinc-based methods excel over other traditional numerical methods
due to their exponentially decaying errors, rapid convergence and
handling problems in the presence of singularities in end-points.
Together with these advantages, the Sinc-Collocation approach that
we utilize exploits first derivative interpolation, whose integration
is much less sensitive to numerical errors. We bring up several
model problems to prove the accuracy, stability, and computational
efficiency of the method. The approximate solutions determined by
the Sinc-Collocation technique are compared to exact solutions and
those obtained by the Sinc-Galerkin approach in earlier studies. Our
findings indicate that the Sinc-Collocation method outperforms other
Sinc-based methods in past studies.
Abstract: Green house effect has becomes a serious concern in
many countries due to the increase consumption of the fossil fuel.
There have been many studies to find an alternative power source.
Wind energy found to be one of the most useful solutions to help in
overcoming the air pollution and global. There is no agreed solution
to conversion of wind energy to electrical energy. In this paper, the
advantages of using a Switched Reluctance Generator (SRG) for
wind energy applications. The theoretical study of the self excitation
of a SRG and the determination of the variable parameters in a SRG
design are discussed. The design parameters for the maximum power
output of the SRG are computed using Matlab simulation. The
designs of the circuit to control the variable parameters in a SRG to
provide the maximum power output are also discussed.
Abstract: Nowadays, there is little information, concerning the
heat shield systems, and this information is not completely reliable to
use in so many cases. for example, the precise calculation cannot be
done for various materials. In addition, the real scale test has two
disadvantages: high cost and low flexibility, and for each case we
must perform a new test. Hence, using numerical modeling program
that calculates the surface recession rate and interior temperature
distribution is necessary. Also, numerical solution of governing
equation for non-charring material ablation is presented in order to
anticipate the recession rate and the heat response of non-charring
heat shields. the governing equation is nonlinear and the Newton-
Rafson method along with TDMA algorithm is used to solve this
nonlinear equation system. Using Newton- Rafson method for
solving the governing equation is one of the advantages of the
solving method because this method is simple and it can be easily
generalized to more difficult problems. The obtained results
compared with reliable sources in order to examine the accuracy of
compiling code.
