Abstract: This paper describes studies carried out to investigate
the viability of using wireless cameras as a tool in monitoring
changes in air quality. A camera is used to monitor the change in
colour of a chemically responsive polymer within view of the camera
as it is exposed to varying chemical species concentration levels. The
camera captures this image and the colour change is analyzed by
averaging the RGB values present. This novel chemical sensing
approach is compared with an established chemical sensing method
using the same chemically responsive polymer coated onto LEDs. In
this way, the concentration levels of acetic acid in the air can be
tracked using both approaches. These approaches to chemical plume
tracking have many applications for air quality monitoring.
Abstract: There are very complex communication systems, as
the multifunction radar, MFAR (Multi-Function Array Radar), where
functions are integrated all together, and simultaneously are
performed the classic functions of tracking and surveillance, as all
the functions related to the communication, countermeasures, and
calibration. All these functions are divided into the tasks to execute.
The task scheduler is a key element of the radar, since it does the
planning and distribution of energy and time resources to be shared
and used by all tasks. This paper presents schedulers based on the use
of multiple queue. Several schedulers have been designed and
studied, and it has been made a comparative analysis of different
performed schedulers. The tests and experiments have been done by
means of system software simulation. Finally a suitable set of radar
characteristics has been selected to evaluate the behavior of the task
scheduler working.
Abstract: This work presents a novel means of extracting fixedlength parameters from voice signals, such that words can be recognized
in linear time. The power and the zero crossing rate are first
calculated segment by segment from a voice signal; by doing so, two
feature sequences are generated. We then construct an FIR system
across these two sequences. The parameters of this FIR system, used
as the input of a multilayer proceptron recognizer, can be derived by
recursive LSE (least-square estimation), implying that the complexity of overall process is linear to the signal size. In the second part of
this work, we introduce a weighting factor λ to emphasize recent
input; therefore, we can further recognize continuous speech signals.
Experiments employ the voice signals of numbers, from zero to nine, spoken in Mandarin Chinese. The proposed method is verified to
recognize voice signals efficiently and accurately.
Abstract: The service sector continues to grow and the percentage
of GDP accounted for by service industries keeps increasing. The
growth and importance of service to an economy is not just a
phenomenon of advanced economies, service is now a majority of the
world gross domestic products. However, the performance evaluation
process of new service development problems generally involves
uncertain and imprecise data. This paper presents a 2-tuple fuzzy
linguistic computing approach to dealing with heterogeneous
information and information loss problems while the processes of
subjective evaluation integration. The proposed method based on group
decision-making scenario to assist business managers in measuring
performance of new service development manipulates the
heterogeneity integration processes and avoids the information loss
effectively.
Abstract: In this study a neural network (NN) was proposed to
predict the sorption of binary mixture of copper-cobalt ions into
clinoptilolite as ion-exchanger. The configuration of the
backpropagation neural network giving the smallest mean square
error was three-layer NN with tangent sigmoid transfer function at
hidden layer with 10 neurons, linear transfer function at output layer
and Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation training algorithm.
Experiments have been carried out in the batch reactor to obtain
equilibrium data of the individual sorption and the mixture of coppercobalt
ions. The obtained modeling results have shown that the used
of neural network has better adjusted the equilibrium data of the
binary system when compared with the conventional sorption
isotherm models.
Abstract: Brain ArterioVenous Malformation (BAVM) is an abnormal tangle of brain blood vessels where arteries shunt directly into veins with no intervening capillary bed which causes high pressure and hemorrhage risk. The success of treatment by embolization in interventional neuroradiology is highly dependent on the accuracy of the vessels visualization. In this paper the performance of clustering techniques on vessel segmentation from 3- D rotational angiography (3DRA) images is investigated and a new technique of segmentation is proposed. This method consists in: preprocessing step of image enhancement, then K-Means (KM), Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) and Expectation Maximization (EM) clustering are used to separate vessel pixels from background and artery pixels from vein pixels when possible. A post processing step of removing false-alarm components is applied before constructing a three-dimensional volume of the vessels. The proposed method was tested on six datasets along with a medical assessment of an expert. Obtained results showed encouraging segmentations.
Abstract: This paper discusses applications of a revolutionary
information technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in
the field of the history of cartography by examples, including
assessing accuracy of early maps, establishing a database of places
and historical administrative units in history, integrating early maps
in GIS or digital images, and analyzing social, political, and
economic information related to production of early maps. GIS
provides a new mean to evaluate the accuracy of early maps. Four
basic steps using GIS for this type of study are discussed. In addition,
several historical geographical information systems are introduced.
These include China Historical Geographic Information Systems
(CHGIS), the United States National Historical Geographic
Information System (NHGIS), and the Great Britain Historical
Geographical Information System. GIS also provides digital means to
display and analyze the spatial information on the early maps or to
layer them with modern spatial data. How GIS relational data
structure may be used to analyze social, political, and economic
information related to production of early maps is also discussed in
this paper. Through discussion on these examples, this paper reveals
value of GIS applications in this field.
Abstract: In this paper, we have combined some spatial derivatives with the optimised time derivative proposed by Tam and Webb in order to approximate the linear advection equation which is given by = 0. Ôêé Ôêé + Ôêé Ôêé x f t u These spatial derivatives are as follows: a standard 7-point 6 th -order central difference scheme (ST7), a standard 9-point 8 th -order central difference scheme (ST9) and optimised schemes designed by Tam and Webb, Lockard et al., Zingg et al., Zhuang and Chen, Bogey and Bailly. Thus, these seven different spatial derivatives have been coupled with the optimised time derivative to obtain seven different finite-difference schemes to approximate the linear advection equation. We have analysed the variation of the modified wavenumber and group velocity, both with respect to the exact wavenumber for each spatial derivative. The problems considered are the 1-D propagation of a Boxcar function, propagation of an initial disturbance consisting of a sine and Gaussian function and the propagation of a Gaussian profile. It is known that the choice of the cfl number affects the quality of results in terms of dissipation and dispersion characteristics. Based on the numerical experiments solved and numerical methods used to approximate the linear advection equation, it is observed in this work, that the quality of results is dependent on the choice of the cfl number, even for optimised numerical methods. The errors from the numerical results have been quantified into dispersion and dissipation using a technique devised by Takacs. Also, the quantity, Exponential Error for Low Dispersion and Low Dissipation, eeldld has been computed from the numerical results. Moreover, based on this work, it has been found that when the quantity, eeldld can be used as a measure of the total error. In particular, the total error is a minimum when the eeldld is a minimum.
Abstract: Stainless steel has been employed in many
engineering applications ranging from pharmaceutical equipment to
piping in the nuclear reactors and storage to chemical products. In
this attempt, simulation of fatigue crack growth based on
experimental results of austenitic stainless steel 304L was presented
using AFGROW code when NASGRO mode laws adopted. Double
through crack at hole specimen is used in this investigation under
constant amplitude loading. Effect of mean stress is highlighted.
Results show that fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) and fatigue life
were affected by maximum applied load and dimension of hole. An
equivalent of Paris law for this material was estimated.
Abstract: European Union candidate status provides a
strong motivation for decision-making in the candidate
countries in shaping the regional development policy where
there is an envisioned transfer of power from center to the
periphery. The process of Europeanization anticipates the
candidate countries configure their regional institutional
templates in the context of the requirements of the European
Union policies and introduces new instruments of incentive
framework of enlargement to be employed in regional
development schemes. It is observed that the contribution of
the local actors to the decision making in the design of the
allocation architectures enhances the efficiency of the funds
and increases the positive effects of the projects funded under
the regional development objectives. This study aims at
exploring the performances of the three regional development
grant schemes in Turkey, established and allocated under the
pre-accession process with a special emphasis given to the
roles of the national and local actors in decision-making for
regional development. Efficiency analyses have been
conducted using the DEA methodology which has proved to
be a superior method in comparative efficiency and
benchmarking measurements. The findings of this study as
parallel to similar international studies, provides that the
participation of the local actors to the decision-making in
funding contributes both to the quality and the efficiency of
the projects funded under the EU schemes.
Abstract: Due to the recovering global economy, enterprises are
increasingly focusing on logistics. Investing in logistic measures for
a production generates a large potential for achieving a good starting
point within a competitive field. Unlike during the global economic
crisis, enterprises are now challenged with investing available capital
to maximize profits. In order to be able to create an informed and
quantifiably comprehensible basis for a decision, enterprises need an
adequate model for logistically and monetarily evaluating measures
in production. The Collaborate Research Centre 489 (SFB 489) at the
Institute for Production Systems (IFA) developed a Logistic
Information System which provides support in making decisions and
is designed specifically for the forging industry. The aim of a project
that has been applied for is to now transfer this process in order to
develop a universal approach to logistically and monetarily evaluate
measures in production.
Abstract: This research contribution is drafted to present the
orbit design, orbit propagator and geomagnetic field estimator for the
nanosatellites specifically for the upcoming CUBESAT, ICUBE-1 of
the Institute of Space Technology (IST), Islamabad, Pakistan. The
ICUBE mission is designed for the low earth orbit at the approximate
height of 700KM. The presented research endeavor designs the
Keplarian elements for ICUBE-1 orbit while incorporating the
mission requirements and propagates the orbit using J2 perturbations,
The attitude determination system of the ICUBE-1 consists of
attitude determination sensors like magnetometer and sun sensor. The
Geomagnetic field estimator is developed according to the model of
International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) for comparing the
magnetic field measurements by the magnetometer for attitude
determination. The output of the propagator namely the Keplarians
position and velocity vectors and the magnetic field vectors are
compared and verified with the same scenario generated in the
Satellite Tool Kit (STK).
Abstract: Fixed-point simulation results are used for the
performance measure of inverting matrices by Cholesky
decomposition. The fixed-point Cholesky decomposition algorithm
is implemented using a fixed-point reconfigurable processing
element. The reconfigurable processing element provides all
mathematical operations required by Cholesky decomposition. The
fixed-point word length analysis is based on simulations using
different condition numbers and different matrix sizes. Simulation
results show that 16 bits word length gives sufficient performance
for small matrices with low condition number. Larger matrices and
higher condition numbers require more dynamic range for a fixedpoint
implementation.
Abstract: The purposes of this research were 1) to survey the
number of drugstores that unlawful dispense of asthma prescription
drugs, in form of drug combinations in the Phaya Thai district of
Bangkok, 2) to find the steroids contained in that drug combinations,
3) to find a means for informing general public about the dangers of
drugs and for a campaign to stop dispensing them.
Researcher collected drug combinations from 69 drugstores in
Phaya Thai district from Feb 15, 2012 to Mar 15, 2012. The survey
found 30.43%, 21, drug stores, sold asthma drug combinations to
customers without a prescription. These collected samples were
tested for steroid contamination by using Immunochromatography
kits. Eleven samples, 52.38%, were found contaminated with
steroids. In short, there should be control and inspection of
drugstores in the distribution of steroid medications. To improve the
knowledge of self health maintenance and drug usage among public,
Thai Government and Department of Public Health should educate
people about the side effects of using drug combinations and steroids.
Abstract: A procedure for the preparation of clarified Pawpaw
Juice was developed. About 750ml Pawpaw pulp was measured into
2 measuring cylinders A & B of capacity 1 litre heated to 400C,
cooled to 200C. 30mls pectinase was added into cylinder A, while
30mls distilled water was added into cylinder B. Enzyme treated
sample (A) was allowed to digest for 5hours after which it was heated
to 900C for 15 minutes to inactivate the enzyme. The heated sample
was cooled and with the aid of a mucillin cloth the pulp was filtered
to obtain the clarified pawpaw juice. The juice was filled into 100ml
plastic bottles, pasteurized at 950C for 45 minutes, cooled and stored
at room temperature. The sample treated with 30mls distilled water
also underwent the same process. Freshly pasteurized sample was
analyzed for specific gravity, titratable acidity, pH, sugars and
ascorbic acid. The remaining sample was then stored for 2 weeks and
the above analyses repeated. There were differences in the results of
the freshly pasteurized samples and stored sample in pH and ascorbic
acid levels, also sample treated with pectinase yielded higher
volumes of juice than that treated with distilled water.
Abstract: A new multi inner stage (MIS) cyclone was designed to
remove the acidic gas and fine particles produced from electronic
industry. To characterize gas flow in MIS cyclone, pressure and
velocity distribution were calculated by means of CFD program. Also,
the flow locus of fine particles and particle removal efficiency were
analyzed by Lagrangian method. When outlet pressure condition was
–100mmAq, the efficiency was the best in this study.
Abstract: The phenomenon of global warming or climate
change has led to many environmental issues including higher
atmospheric temperatures, intense precipitation, increased
greenhouse gaseous emissions and increased indoor discomfort.
Studies have shown that bringing nature to the roof such as
constructing green roof and implementing high-reflective roof may
give positive impact in mitigating the effects of global warming and
in increasing thermal comfort sensation inside buildings. However,
no study has been conducted to compare both types of passive roof
treatments in Malaysia in order to increase thermal comfort in
buildings. Therefore, this study is conducted to investigate the effect
of green roof and white painted roof as passive roof treatment in
improving indoor comfort of Malaysian homes. This study uses an
experimental approach in which the measurements of temperatures
are conducted on the case study building. The measurements of
outdoor and indoor environments were conducted on the flat roof
with two different types of roof treatment that are green roof and
white roof. The measurement of existing black bare roof was also
conducted to act as a control for this study.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a simple circuit for
Manchester decoding and without using any complicated or
programmable devices. This circuit can decode 90kbps of transmitted
encoded data; however, greater than this transmission rate can be
decoded if high speed devices were used. We also present a new
method for extracting the embedded clock from Manchester data in
order to use it for serial-to-parallel conversion. All of our
experimental measurements have been done using simulation.
Abstract: The so-called all-pass filter circuits are commonly
used in the field of signal processing, control and measurement.
Being connected to capacitive loads, these circuits tend to loose their
stability; therefore the elaborate analysis of their dynamic behavior is
necessary. The compensation methods intending to increase the
stability of such circuits are discussed in this paper, including the socalled
lead-lag compensation technique being treated in detail. For
the dynamic modeling, a two-port network model of the all-pass filter
is being derived. The results of the model analysis show, that
effective lead-lag compensation can be achieved, alone by the
optimization of the circuit parameters; therefore the application of
additional electric components are not needed to fulfill the stability
requirement.
Abstract: This paper presents a computational methodology
based on matrix operations for a computer based solution to the
problem of performance analysis of software reliability models
(SRMs). A set of seven comparison criteria have been formulated to
rank various non-homogenous Poisson process software reliability
models proposed during the past 30 years to estimate software
reliability measures such as the number of remaining faults, software
failure rate, and software reliability. Selection of optimal SRM for
use in a particular case has been an area of interest for researchers in
the field of software reliability. Tools and techniques for software
reliability model selection found in the literature cannot be used with
high level of confidence as they use a limited number of model
selection criteria. A real data set of middle size software project from
published papers has been used for demonstration of matrix method.
The result of this study will be a ranking of SRMs based on the
Permanent value of the criteria matrix formed for each model based
on the comparison criteria. The software reliability model with
highest value of the Permanent is ranked at number – 1 and so on.
