Abstract: In this study, out-of-plane free vibrations of a circular
rods is investigated theoretically. The governing equations for
naturally twisted and curved spatial rods are obtained using
Timoshenko beam theory and rewritten for circular rods. Effects of
the axial and shear deformations are considered in the formulations.
Ordinary differential equations in scalar form are solved analytically
by using transfer matrix method. The circular rods of the mass matrix
are obtained by using straight rod of consistent mass matrix. Free
vibrations frequencies obtained by solving eigenvalue problem. A
computer program coded in MATHEMATICA language is prepared.
Circular beams are analyzed through various examples for free
vibrations analysis. Results are compared with ANSYS results based
on finite element method and available in the literature.
Abstract: The present research work investigates the seismic
response of reinforced concrete (RC) frame building considering the
effect of modeling masonry infill (MI) walls. The seismic behavior of
a residential 6-storey RC frame building, considering and ignoring
the effect of masonry, is numerically investigated using response
spectrum (RS) analysis. The considered herein building is designed
as a moment resisting frame (MRF) system following the Egyptian
code (EC) requirements. Two developed models in terms of bare
frame and infill walls frame are used in the study. Equivalent
diagonal strut methodology is used to represent the behavior of infill
walls, whilst the well-known software package ETABS is used for
implementing all frame models and performing the analysis. The
results of the numerical simulations such as base shear,
displacements, and internal forces for the bare frame as well as the
infill wall frame are presented in a comparative way. The results of
the study indicate that the interaction between infill walls and frames
significantly change the responses of buildings during earthquakes
compared to the results of bare frame building model. Specifically,
the seismic analysis of RC bare frame structure leads to
underestimation of base shear and consequently damage or even
collapse of buildings may occur under strong shakings. On the other
hand, considering infill walls significantly decrease the peak floor
displacements and drifts in both X and Y-directions.
Abstract: By textile science incorporating with electronic
industry, developed textile products start to take part in different
areas such as industry, military, space, medical etc. for health,
protection, defense, communication and automation. Electronic
textiles (e-textiles) are fabrics that contain electronics and
interconnections with them. In this study, two types of base yarns
(cotton and acrylic) and three types of conductive steel yarns with
different linear resistance values (14Ω/m, 30Ω/m, 70Ω/m) were used
to investigate the effect of base yarn type and linear resistance of
conductive yarns on thermal behavior of e-textile structures. Thermal
behavior of samples was examined by thermal camera.
Abstract: In emerging economies, recycling is an opportunity
for the cities to increase the lifespan of sanitary landfills, reduce the
costs of the solid waste management, decrease the environmental
problems of the waste treatment through reincorporate waste in the
productive cycle and protect and develop people’s livelihoods of
informal waste pickers. However, few studies have analysed the
possibilities and strategies to integrate formal and informal sectors in
the solid waste management for the benefit of both. This study seek
to make a strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT)
analysis in three recycling associations of Bogotá with the aim to
understand and determine the situation of recycling from perspective
of informal sector in its transition to enter as authorized waste
providers. Data used in the analysis are derived from multiple
strategies such as literature review, the Bogota’s recycling database,
focus group meetings, governmental reports, national laws and
regulations and specific interviews with key stakeholders. Results of
this study show as the main stakeholders of formal and informal
sector of waste management can identify the internal and internal
conditions of recycling in Bogotá. Several strategies were designed
based on the SWOTs determined, could be useful for Bogotá to
advance and promote recycling as a key strategy for integrated
sustainable waste management in the city.
Abstract: Reliability of long-term storage products is related to
the availability of the whole system, and the evaluation of storage life
is of great necessity. These products are usually highly reliable and
little failure information can be collected. In this paper, an analytical
method based on data from accelerated storage life test is proposed to
evaluate the reliability index of the long-term storage products. Firstly,
singularities are eliminated by data normalization and residual
analysis. Secondly, with the preprocessed data, the degradation path
model is built to obtain the pseudo life values. Then by life distribution
hypothesis, we can get the estimator of parameters in high stress levels
and verify failure mechanism consistency. Finally, the life distribution
under the normal stress level is extrapolated via the acceleration model
and evaluation of the actual average life is available. An application
example with the camera stabilization device is provided to illustrate
the methodology we proposed.
Abstract: Although, lanthanum carbonate has not been approved
by the FDA for treatment of hyperphosphatemia, we prospectively
evaluated the efficacy of the combination of Calcium hydroxyapatite
(CHAp) and Lanthanum Carbonate (LaC) for the treatment of
hyperphosphatemia on mice. CHAp was prepared by co-precipitation
method using Ca(OH)2, H3PO4, NH4OH with calcination at 1200ºC.
Lanthanum carbonate was prepared by chemical method using
NaHCO3 and LaCl3 at low pH environment, below 4.0. The
structures were characterized by FTIR spectra and SEM -EDX
analysis. The study group included 16 subjects-mice divided into four
groups according to the administered substance: lanthanum carbonate
(group A), CHAp (group B), lanthanum carbonate + CHAp (group C)
and salt water (group D). The results indicate a phosphate decrease
when subjects (mice) were treated with CHAp and lanthanum
carbonate (0.5% CMC), in a single dose of 1500 mg/kg. Serum
phosphate concentration decreased [(from 4.5 ± 0.8 mg/dL) to
4.05 ± 0.2 mg/dL), P < 0.01] in group A and in group C (to 3.6
± 0.2 mg/dL) at 12 hours from the administration. The combination
of CHAp and lanthanum carbonate is a suitable regimen for
hyperphosphatemia treatment because it avoids both the
hypercalcemia of CaCO3 and the adverse effects of CHAp.
Abstract: The performance of box-type solar cookers has been
reported by several researchers but little attention was paid to the
effect of the type of insulation material on the energy and exergy
efficiency of these cookers. This research aimed at evaluating the
energy and exergy efficiencies of the box-type cookers containing
different insulation materials. Energy and exergy efficiencies of five
box-type solar cookers insulated with maize cob, air (control), maize
husk, coconut coir and polyurethane foam respectively were obtained
over a period of three years. The cookers were evaluated using water
heating test procedures in determining the energy and exergy
analysis. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using
ANOVA. The result shows that the average energy input for the five
solar cookers were: 245.5, 252.2, 248.7, 241.5 and 245.5J
respectively while their respective average energy losses were: 201.2,
212.7, 208.4, 189.1 and 199.8J. The average exergy input for five
cookers were: 228.2, 234.4, 231.1, 224.4 and 228.2J respectively
while their respective average exergy losses were: 223.4, 230.6,
226.9, 218.9 and 223.0J. The energy and exergy efficiency was
highest in the cooker with coconut coir (37.35 and 3.90%
respectively) in the first year but was lowest for air (11 and 1.07%
respectively) in the third year. Statistical analysis showed significant
difference between the energy and exergy efficiencies over the years.
These results reiterate the importance of a good insulating material
for a box-type solar cooker.
Abstract: We present a framework of researcher knowledge
development in conducting a study in mathematics education. The
key components of the framework are: knowledge germane to
conducting a particular study, processes of knowledge accumulation,
and catalyzing filters that influence a researcher decision making.
The components of the framework originated from a confluence
between constructs and theories in Mathematics Education, Higher
Education and Sociology. Drawing on a self-reflective interview with
a leading researcher in mathematics education, Professor Michèle
Artigue, we illustrate how the framework can be utilized in data
analysis. Criteria for framework evaluation are discussed.
Abstract: Dengue outbreaks are affected by biological,
ecological, socio-economic and demographic factors that vary over
time and space. These factors have been examined separately and still
require systematic clarification. The present study aimed to investigate
the spatial-temporal clustering relationships between these factors and
dengue outbreaks in the northern region of Sri Lanka. Remote sensing
(RS) data gathered from a plurality of satellites were used to develop
an index comprising rainfall, humidity and temperature data. RS data
gathered by ALOS/AVNIR-2 were used to detect urbanization, and a
digital land cover map was used to extract land cover information.
Other data on relevant factors and dengue outbreaks were collected
through institutions and extant databases. The analyzed RS data and
databases were integrated into geographic information systems,
enabling temporal analysis, spatial statistical analysis and space-time
clustering analysis. Our present results showed that increases in the
number of the combination of ecological factor and socio-economic
and demographic factors with above the average or the presence
contribute to significantly high rates of space-time dengue clusters.
Abstract: Improved resource efficiency of production is a key
requirement for sustainable growth, worldwide. In this regards, by
considering the energy and tourism as the extra inputs to the classical
Coub-Douglas production function, this study aims at investigating
the efficiency changes in the North African countries. To this end, the
study uses panel data for the period 1995-2010 and adopts the
Malmquist index based on the data envelopment analysis. Results
show that tourism increases technical and scale efficiencies, while it
decreases technological and total factor productivity changes. On the
other hand, when the production function is augmented by the energy
input; technical efficiency change decreases, while the technological
change, scale efficiency change and total factor productivity change
increase. Thus, in order to satisfy the needs for sustainable growth,
North African governments should take some measures for increasing
the contribution that the tourism makes to economic growth and some
others for efficient use of resources in the energy sector.
Abstract: The objectives of the study were to determine the
marketing mix factors that influencing tourist’s destination decision
making for cultural tourism in the Chonburi province. Both
quantitative and qualitative data were applied in this study. The
samples of 400 cases for quantitative analysis were tourists (both
Thai and foreign) who were interested in cultural tourism in the
Chonburi province, and traveled to cultural sites in Chonburi and 14
representatives from provincial tourism committee of Chonburi and
local tourism experts. Statistics utilized in this research included
frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple
regression analysis. The study found that Thai and foreign tourists
are influenced by different important marketing mix factors. The
important factors for Thai respondents were physical evidence, price,
people, and place at high importance level. For foreign respondents,
physical evidence, price, people, and process were high importance
level, whereas, product, place and promotion were moderate
importance level.
Abstract: Electronic Word-Of-Mouth (eWOM) communities
represent today an important source of information in which more
and more customers base their purchasing decisions. They include
thousands of reviews concerning very different products and services
posted by many individuals geographically distributed all over the
world. Due to their massive audience, eWOM communities can help
users to find the product they are looking for even if they are less
popular or rare. This is known as the long tail effect, which leads to a
larger number of lower-selling niche products. This paper analyzes
the long tail effect in a well-known eWOM community and defines a
tool for finding niche products unavailable through conventional
channels.
Abstract: The capability of CNC gantry milling machines in
manufacturing long components has caused the expanded use of such
machines. On the other hand, the machines’ gantry rigidity can
reduce under severe loads or vibration during operation. Indeed, the
quality of machining is dependent on the machine’s dynamic
behavior throughout the operating process. For this reason, these
types of machines have always been used widely and are not
efficient. Therefore, they can usually be employed for rough
machining and may not produce adequate surface finishing. In this
paper, a CNC gantry milling machine with the potential to produce
good surface finish has been designed and analyzed. The lowest
natural frequency of this machine is 202 Hz corresponding to 12000
rpm at all motion amplitudes with a full range of suitable frequency
responses. Meanwhile, the maximum deformation under dead loads
for the gantry machine is 0.565*m, indicating that this machine tool
is capable of producing higher product quality.
Abstract: The building sector is responsible, in many
industrialized countries, for about 40% of the total energy
requirements, so it seems necessary to devote some efforts in this
area in order to achieve a significant reduction of energy
consumption and of greenhouse gases emissions.
The paper presents a study aiming at providing a design
methodology able to identify the best configuration of the system
building/plant, from a technical, economic and environmentally point
of view.
Normally, the classical approach involves a building's energy
loads analysis under steady state conditions, and subsequent selection
of measures aimed at improving the energy performance, based on
previous experience made by architects and engineers in the design
team. Instead, the proposed approach uses a sequence of two wellknown
scientifically validated calculation methods (TRNSYS and
RETScreen), that allow quite a detailed feasibility analysis.
To assess the validity of the calculation model, an existing,
historical building in Central Italy, that will be the object of
restoration and preservative redevelopment, was selected as a casestudy.
The building is made of a basement and three floors, with a
total floor area of about 3,000 square meters.
The first step has been the determination of the heating and
cooling energy loads of the building in a dynamic regime by means,
which allows simulating the real energy needs of the building in
function of its use. Traditional methodologies, based as they are on
steady-state conditions, cannot faithfully reproduce the effects of
varying climatic conditions and of inertial properties of the structure.
With this model is possible to obtain quite accurate and reliable
results that allow identifying effective combinations building-HVAC
system.
The second step has consisted of using output data obtained as
input to the calculation model, which enables to compare different
system configurations from the energy, environmental and financial
point of view, with an analysis of investment, and operation and
maintenance costs, so allowing determining the economic benefit of
possible interventions.
The classical methodology often leads to the choice of
conventional plant systems, while our calculation model provides a
financial-economic assessment for innovative energy systems and
low environmental impact.
Computational analysis can help in the design phase, particularly
in the case of complex structures with centralized plant systems, by
comparing the data returned by the calculation model for different
design options.
Abstract: Co metal supported on SiO2 and Al2O3 catalysts with
a metal loading varied from 30 of 70 wt.% were evaluated for
decomposition of methane to COx free hydrogen and carbon
nanomaterials. The catalytic runs were carried out from 550-800oC
under atmospheric pressure using fixed bed vertical flow reactor. The
fresh and spent catalysts were characterized by BET surface area
analyzer, XRD, SEM, TEM and TG analysis. The data showed that
50% Co/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited remarkable higher activity at 800oC
with respect to H2 production compared to rest of the catalysts.
However, the catalytic activity and durability was greatly declined at
higher temperature. The main reason for the catalytic inhibition of Co
containing SiO2 catalysts is the higher reduction temperature of
Co2SiO4. TEM images illustrate that the carbon materials with
various morphologies, carbon nanofibers (CNFs), helical-shaped
CNFs and branched CNFs depending on the catalyst composition and
reaction temperature were obtained.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the
physical and chemical characteristics of Serra da Estrela cheese and
compare these results with those of the sensory analysis. For the
study were taken six samples of Serra da Estrela cheese produced
with 6 different ecotypes of thistle in a dairy situated in Penalva do
Castelo. The chemical properties evaluated were moisture content,
protein, fat, ash, chloride and pH; the physical properties studied
were color and texture; and finally a sensory evaluation was
undertaken. The results showed moisture varying in the range 40-
48%, protein in the range 15-20%, fat between 41-45%, ash between
3.9-5.0% and chlorides varying from 1.2 to 3.0%. The pH varied
from 4.8 to 5.4. The textural properties revealed that the crust
hardness is relatively low (maximum 7.3 N), although greater than
flesh firmness (maximum 1.7 N), and also that these cheeses are in
fact soft paste type, with measurable stickiness and intense
adhesiveness. The color analysis showed that the crust is relatively
light (L* over 50), and with a predominant yellow coloration (b*
around 20 or over) although with a slight greenish tone (a* negative).
The results of the sensory analysis did not show great variability for
most of the attributes measured, although some differences were
found in attributes such as crust thickness, crust uniformity, and
creamy flesh.
Abstract: Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF, Mw=6,045) has been
reported to have high efficiency of wound repair and anti-wrinkle
effect. However, the half-life of EGF in the body is too short to exert
the biological activity effectively when applied in free form. Growth
Factors can be stabilized by immobilization with carbohydrates from
thermal and proteolytic degradation. Low molecular weight chitosan
(LMCS) and its derivate prepared by hydrogen peroxide has high
solubility. LM6A6DC was successfully prepared as a reactive
carbohydrate for the stabilization of EGF by the reactions of LMCS
with alkalization, tosylation, azidation and reduction. The structure of
LM6A6DC was confirmed by FT-IR, 1H NMR and elementary
analysis. For enhancing the stability of free EGF, EGF was attached
with LM6A6DC by using water-soluble carbodiimide.
EGF-LM6A6DC conjugates did not show any cytotoxicity on the
Normal Human Dermal Fibroblast (NHDF) 3T3 proliferation at least
under 100 μg/ml. In the result, it was considered that LM6A6DC is
suitable to immobilize of growth factor.
Abstract: This study estimates the seismic demands of tall
buildings with central symmetric setbacks by using nonlinear time
history analysis. Three setback structures, all 60-story high with
setback in three levels, are used for evaluation. The effects of
irregularities occurred by setback are evaluated by determination of
global-drift, story-displacement and story drift. Story-displacement is
modified by roof displacement and first story displacement and story
drift is modified by global drift. All results are calculated at the
center of mass and in x and y direction. Also the absolute values of
these quantities are determined. The results show that increasing of
vertical irregularities increases the global drift of the structure and
enlarges the deformations in the height of the structure. It is also
observed that the effects of geometry irregularity in the seismic
deformations of setback structures are higher than those of mass
irregularity.
Abstract: This paper presents Finite Element Method (FEM) for
analyzing the internal responses generated in thin rectangular plates
with various edge conditions and rigidity conditions. Comparison has
been made between the FEM (ANSYS software) results for
displacement, stresses and moments generated with and without the
consideration of hole in plate and different aspect ratios. In the end
comparison for responses in plain and composite square plates has
been studied.
Abstract: This paper proposes a rotational invariant texture
feature based on the roughness property of the image for psoriasis
image analysis. In this work, we have applied this feature for image
classification and segmentation. The fuzzy concept is employed to
overcome the imprecision of roughness. Since the psoriasis lesion is
modeled by a rough surface, the feature is extended for calculating
the Psoriasis Area Severity Index value. For classification and
segmentation, the Nearest Neighbor algorithm is applied. We have
obtained promising results for identifying affected lesions by using
the roughness index and severity level estimation.
