Abstract: Since the driving speed and control accuracy of
commercial optical disk are increasing significantly, it needs an
efficient controller to monitor the track seeking and following
operations of the servo system for achieving the desired data
extracting response. The nonlinear behaviors of the actuator and servo
system of the optical disk drive will influence the laser spot
positioning. Here, the model-free fuzzy control scheme is employed to
design the track seeking servo controller for a d.c. motor driving
optical disk drive system. In addition, the sliding model control
strategy is introduced into the fuzzy control structure to construct a
1-D adaptive fuzzy rule intelligent controller for simplifying the
implementation problem and improving the control performance. The
experimental results show that the steady state error of the track
seeking by using this fuzzy controller can maintain within the track
width (1.6 μm ). It can be used in the track seeking and track
following servo control operations.
Abstract: Sensor network applications are often data centric and
involve collecting data from a set of sensor nodes to be delivered
to various consumers. Typically, nodes in a sensor network are
resource-constrained, and hence the algorithms operating in these
networks must be efficient. There may be several algorithms available
implementing the same service, and efficient considerations may
require a sensor application to choose the best suited algorithm. In
this paper, we present a systematic evaluation of a set of algorithms
implementing the data gathering service. We propose a modular
infrastructure for implementing such algorithms in TOSSIM with
separate configurable modules for various tasks such as interest
propagation, data propagation, aggregation, and path maintenance.
By appropriately configuring these modules, we propose a number
of data gathering algorithms, each of which incorporates a different
set of heuristics for optimizing performance. We have performed
comprehensive experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of these
heuristics, and we present results from our experimentation efforts.
Abstract: Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) aims at searching image databases for specific images that are similar to a given query image based on matching of features derived from the image content. This paper focuses on a low-dimensional color based indexing technique for achieving efficient and effective retrieval performance. In our approach, the color features are extracted using the mean shift algorithm, a robust clustering technique. Then the cluster (region) mode is used as representative of the image in 3-D color space. The feature descriptor consists of the representative color of a region and is indexed using a spatial indexing method that uses *R -tree thus avoiding the high-dimensional indexing problems associated with the traditional color histogram. Alternatively, the images in the database are clustered based on region feature similarity using Euclidian distance. Only representative (centroids) features of these clusters are indexed using *R -tree thus improving the efficiency. For similarity retrieval, each representative color in the query image or region is used independently to find regions containing that color. The results of these methods are compared. A JAVA based query engine supporting query-by- example is built to retrieve images by color.
Abstract: The National Bridge Inventory (NBI) includes more
than 600,000 bridges within the United States of America.
Prestressed concrete girder bridges represent one of the most widely
used bridge systems. The majority of these girder bridges were
constructed using 0.5 and 0.6 inch diameter strands. The main
impediments to using larger strand diameters are: 1) lack of prestress
bed capacities, 2) lack of structural knowledge regarding the transfer
and development length of larger strands, and 3) the possibility of
developing wider end zone cracks upon strand release.
This paper presents a study about using 0.7 inch strands in girder
fabrication. Transfer and development length were evaluated, and
girders were fabricated using 0.7 inch strands at different spacings.
Results showed that 0.7 inch strands can be used at 2.0 inch spacing
without violating the AASHTO LRFD Specifications, while attaining
superior performance in shear and flexure.
Abstract: Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a statistical
learning tool developed to a more complex concept of
structural risk minimization (SRM). In this paper, SVM is
applied to signal detection in communication systems in the
presence of channel noise in various environments in the form
of Rayleigh fading, additive white Gaussian background noise
(AWGN), and interference noise generalized as additive color
Gaussian noise (ACGN). The structure and performance of
SVM in terms of the bit error rate (BER) metric is derived and
simulated for these advanced stochastic noise models and the
computational complexity of the implementation, in terms of
average computational time per bit, is also presented. The
performance of SVM is then compared to conventional binary
signaling optimal model-based detector driven by binary
phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation. We show that the
SVM performance is superior to that of conventional matched
filter-, innovation filter-, and Wiener filter-driven detectors,
even in the presence of random Doppler carrier deviation,
especially for low SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) ranges. For
large SNR, the performance of the SVM was similar to that of
the classical detectors. However, the convergence between
SVM and maximum likelihood detection occurred at a higher
SNR as the noise environment became more hostile.
Abstract: In this paper we consider the problem of change
detection and non stationary signals tracking. Using parametric
estimation of signals based on least square lattice adaptive filters we
consider for change detection statistical parametric methods using
likelihood ratio and hypothesis tests. In order to track signals
dynamics, we introduce a compensation procedure in the adaptive
estimation. This will improve the adaptive estimation performances
and fasten it-s convergence after changes detection.
Abstract: Several valve stiction models have been proposed in the literature to help understand and study the behavior of sticky valves. In this paper, an alternative black-box modeling approach based on Neural Network (NN) is presented. It is shown that with proper network type and optimum model structures, the performance of the developed NN stiction model is comparable to other established method. The resulting NN model is also tested for its robustness against the uncertainty in the stiction parameter values. Predictive mode operation also shows excellent performance of the proposed model for multi-steps ahead prediction.
Abstract: The load frequency control problem of power systems has attracted a lot of attention from engineers and researchers over the years. Increasing and quickly changing load demand, coupled with the inclusion of more generators with high variability (solar and wind power generators) on the network are making power systems more difficult to regulate. Frequency changes are unavoidable but regulatory authorities require that these changes remain within a certain bound. Engineers are required to perform the tricky task of adjusting the control system to maintain the frequency within tolerated bounds. It is well known that to minimize frequency variations, a large proportional feedback gain (speed regulation constant) is desirable. However, this improvement in performance using proportional feedback comes about at the expense of a reduced stability margin and also allows some steady-state error. A conventional PI controller is then included as a secondary control loop to drive the steadystate error to zero. In this paper, we propose a robust controller to replace the conventional PI controller which guarantees performance and stability of the power system over the range of variation of the speed regulation constant. Simulation results are shown to validate the superiority of the proposed approach on a simple single-area power system model.
Abstract: Water recycling represents an important challenge for many countries, in particular in countries where this natural resource is rare. On the other hand, in many operations, water is used as a cooling medium, as a high proportion of water consumed in industry is used for cooling purposes. Generally this water is rejected directly to the nature. This reject will cause serious environment damages as well as an important waste of this precious element.. On way to solve these problems is to reuse and recycle this warm water, through the use of natural cooling medium, such as air in a heat exchanger unit, known as a cooling tower. A poor performance, design or reliability of cooling towers will result in lower flow rate of cooling water an increase in the evaporation of water, an hence losses of water and energy. This paper which presents an experimental investigate of thermal and hydraulic performances of a mechanical cooling tower, enables to show that the water evaporation rate, Mev, increases with an increase in the air and water flow rates, as well as inlet water temperature and for fixed air flow rates, the pressure drop (ΔPw/Z) increases with increasing , L, due to the hydrodynamic behavior of the air/water flow.
Abstract: The use of additions in cement in manufacturing,
mortar and concrete offers economic and ecological advantages. Cements with additions such as limestone, slag and natural
pouzzolana are produced in cement factories in Algeria. Several studies analyzed the effect of these additions on the physical and
mechanical properties as well as the durability of concrete. However,
few studies were conducted on the effect of local metakaolin on
mechanical properties and durability of concrete. The main purpose
of this paper is to analyze the performance of mortar and concrete with local metakaolin. The preparation of the metakaolin was carried
out by calcination of kaolin at a temperature of 850 °C for a period of 3 hours. The experimental results have shown that the rates of
substitutions of 10 and 15% metakaolin increases the compressive
strength and flexural strength at both early age and long term. The durability and the permeability were also improved by reducing the
coefficient of sorptivity.

Abstract: The development of many measurement and inspection systems of products based on real-time image processing can not be carried out totally in a laboratory due to the size or the temperature of the manufactured products. Those systems must be developed in successive phases. Firstly, the system is installed in the production line with only an operational service to acquire images of the products and other complementary signals. Next, a recording service of the image and signals must be developed and integrated in the system. Only after a large set of images of products is available, the development of the real-time image processing algorithms for measurement or inspection of the products can be accomplished under realistic conditions. Finally, the recording service is turned off or eliminated and the system operates only with the real-time services for the acquisition and processing of the images. This article presents a systematic performance evaluation of the image compression algorithms currently available to implement a real-time recording service. The results allow establishing a trade off between the reduction or compression of the image size and the CPU time required to get that compression level.
Abstract: The study applied a combination of organisational learning models (Senge, 1994: Pedler, Burgoyne and Boydell, 1991) and later adopted fifteen organisational learning principles with one of the biggest energy providers in South East Asia. The purposes of the current study were to: a) investigate the company-s practices on fifteen organisational learning principles; b) explore the perceptions and expectations of its employees in relations to the principles; and c) compare the perceptions and expectations between management and non-management staff toward the fifteen factors. One hundred and ten employees responded on a designed questionnaire and the results indicated that the company was practicing activities that associated with organisational learning principles. Also, according to the T-test results, significant differences between management and non-management respondents were found. Research implications are also provided.
Abstract: Direction of Arrival estimation refers to defining a mathematical function called a pseudospectrum that gives an indication of the angle a signal is impinging on the antenna array. This estimation is an efficient method of improving the quality of service in a communication system by focusing the reception and transmission only in the estimated direction thereby increasing fidelity with a provision to suppress interferers. This improvement is largely dependent on the performance of the algorithm employed in the estimation. Many DOA algorithms exists amongst which are MUSIC, Root-MUSIC and ESPRIT. In this paper, performance of these three algorithms is analyzed in terms of complexity, accuracy as assessed and characterized by the CRLB and memory requirements in various environments and array sizes. It is found that the three algorithms are high resolution and dependent on the operating environment and the array size.
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks can be used to measure and monitor many challenging problems and typically involve in monitoring, tracking and controlling areas such as battlefield monitoring, object tracking, habitat monitoring and home sentry systems. However, wireless sensor networks pose unique security challenges including forgery of sensor data, eavesdropping, denial of service attacks, and the physical compromise of sensor nodes. Node in a sensor networks may be vanished due to power exhaustion or malicious attacks. To expand the life span of the sensor network, a new node deployment is needed. In military scenarios, intruder may directly organize malicious nodes or manipulate existing nodes to set up malicious new nodes through many kinds of attacks. To avoid malicious nodes from joining the sensor network, a security is required in the design of sensor network protocols. In this paper, we proposed a security framework to provide a complete security solution against the known attacks in wireless sensor networks. Our framework accomplishes node authentication for new nodes with recognition of a malicious node. When deployed as a framework, a high degree of security is reachable compared with the conventional sensor network security solutions. A proposed framework can protect against most of the notorious attacks in sensor networks, and attain better computation and communication performance. This is different from conventional authentication methods based on the node identity. It includes identity of nodes and the node security time stamp into the authentication procedure. Hence security protocols not only see the identity of each node but also distinguish between new nodes and old nodes.
Abstract: Stochastic resonance (SR) is a phenomenon whereby
the signal transmission or signal processing through certain nonlinear
systems can be improved by adding noise. This paper discusses SR in
nonlinear signal detection by a simple test statistic, which can be
computed from multiple noisy data in a binary decision problem based
on a maximum a posteriori probability criterion. The performance of
detection is assessed by the probability of detection error Per . When
the input signal is subthreshold signal, we establish that benefit from
noise can be gained for different noises and confirm further that the
subthreshold SR exists in nonlinear signal detection. The efficacy of
SR is significantly improved and the minimum of Per can
dramatically approach to zero as the sample number increases. These
results show the robustness of SR in signal detection and extend the
applicability of SR in signal processing.

Mathematical formulations calculate solar heat gain by the external skin. Moreover, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed on the case study building to enhance effectiveness of the facade. The conclusion divulged difference of gained energy by the cavity and room with and without blind and louvers. Some solutions were introduced to surge the performance of natural ventilation by plunging the cooling loads in summer.
Abstract: Nowadays, quasi-continuous wave diode lasers are
used in a widespread variety of applications. Temperature effects in
these lasers can strongly influence their performance. In this paper,
the effects of temperature have been experimentally investigated on
different features of a 60W-QCW diode laser. The obtained results
indicate that the conversion efficiency and operation voltage of diode
laser decrease with the augmentation of the working temperature
associated with a redshift in the laser peak wavelength. Experimental
results show the emission peak wavelength of laser shifts 0.26 nm
and the conversion efficiency decreases 1.76 % with the increase of
temperature from 40 to 50 ̊C. Present study also shows the slope
efficiency decreases gradually at low temperatures and rapidly at
higher temperatures. Regarding the close dependence of the
mentioned parameters to the operating temperature, it is of great
importance to carefully control the working temperature of diode
laser, particularly for medical applications.
Abstract: The design of a steam turbine is a very complex
engineering operation that can be simplified and improved thanks to
computer-aided multi-objective optimization. This process makes use
of existing optimization algorithms and losses correlations to identify
those geometries that deliver the best balance of performance (i.e.
Pareto-optimal points).
This paper deals with a one-dimensional multi-objective and
multi-point optimization of a single-stage steam turbine. Using a
genetic optimization algorithm and an algebraic one-dimensional
ideal gas-path model based on loss and deviation correlations, a code
capable of performing the optimization of a predefined steam turbine
stage was developed. More specifically, during this study the
parameters modified (i.e. decision variables) to identify the best
performing geometries were solidity and angles both for stator and
rotor cascades, while the objective functions to maximize were totalto-
static efficiency and specific work done.
Finally, an accurate analysis of the obtained results was carried
out.
Abstract: The effect of shearing date on behaviors and performances of 20 pregnant Rahmani ewes was evaluated in four groups (5each). Ewes were shorn at 70, 100 and 130 days of pregnancy in the first three groups respectively, while the fourth group was maintained unshorn as a control. Some behavioral and physiological data related to ewes in addition, blood cortisol level were recorded. Results revealed a significant increase in the frequencies of comfort and eating behaviors, respiratory rate, pulse rate, lamb birth weight and blood cortisol level in early and mid pregnancy shorn ewes. Also, a slight increase in pregnancy period was observed for those ewes. On the other hand, social behaviors, and core temperature were not affected by shearing. These results conclude that prenatal shearing (early and mid-pregnancy) of ewes increases the frequencies of comfort and eating behaviors, and improves the survival rates of lambs by increasing their birth weights.
