Abstract: This article presents the simulation, parameterization and optimization of an electromagnet with the C–shaped configuration, intended for the study of magnetic properties of materials. The electromagnet studied consists of a C-shaped yoke, which provides self–shielding for minimizing losses of magnetic flux density, two poles of high magnetic permeability and power coils wound on the poles. The main physical variable studied was the static magnetic flux density in a column within the gap between the poles, with 4cm2 of square cross section and a length of 5cm, seeking a suitable set of parameters that allow us to achieve a uniform magnetic flux density of 1x104 Gaussor values above this in the column, when the system operates at room temperature and with a current consumption not exceeding 5A. By means of a magnetostatic analysis by the finite element method, the magnetic flux density and the distribution of the magnetic field lines were visualized and quantified. From the results obtained by simulating an initial configuration of electromagnet, a structural optimization of the geometry of the adjustable caps for the ends of the poles was performed. The magnetic permeability effect of the soft magnetic materials used in the poles system, such as low– carbon steel (0.08% C), Permalloy (45% Ni, 54.7% Fe) and Mumetal (21.2% Fe, 78.5% Ni), was also evaluated. The intensity and uniformity of the magnetic field in the gap showed a high dependence with the factors described above. The magnetic field achieved in the column was uniform and its magnitude ranged between 1.5x104 Gauss and 1.9x104 Gauss according to the material of the pole used, with the possibility of increasing the magnetic field by choosing a suitable geometry of the cap, introducing a cooling system for the coils and adjusting the spacing between the poles. This makes the device a versatile and scalable tool to generate the magnetic field necessary to perform magnetic characterization of materials by techniques such as vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), Hall-effect, Kerr-effect magnetometry, among others. Additionally, a CAD design of the modules of the electromagnet is presented in order to facilitate the construction and scaling of the physical device.
Abstract: This study compares three meta heuristics to minimize makespan (Cmax) for Hybrid Flow Shop (HFS) Scheduling Problem with Parallel Machines. This problem is known to be NP-Hard. This study proposes three algorithms among improvement heuristic searches which are: Genetic Algorithm (GA), Simulated Annealing (SA), and Tabu Search (TS). SA and TS are known as deterministic improvement heuristic search. GA is known as stochastic improvement heuristic search. A comprehensive comparison from these three improvement heuristic searches is presented. The results for the experiments conducted show that TS is effective and efficient to solve HFS scheduling problems.
Abstract: Active Vibration Control (AVC) is an important
problem in structures. One of the ways to tackle this problem is to
make the structure smart, adaptive and self-controlling. The objective
of active vibration control is to reduce the vibration of a system by
automatic modification of the system-s structural response. This
paper features the modeling and design of a Periodic Output
Feedback (POF) control technique for the active vibration control of
a flexible Timoshenko cantilever beam for a multivariable case with
2 inputs and 2 outputs by retaining the first 2 dominant vibratory
modes using the smart structure concept. The entire structure is
modeled in state space form using the concept of piezoelectric
theory, Timoshenko beam theory, Finite Element Method (FEM) and
the state space techniques. Simulations are performed in MATLAB.
The effect of placing the sensor / actuator at 2 finite element
locations along the length of the beam is observed. The open loop
responses, closed loop responses and the tip displacements with and
without the controller are obtained and the performance of the smart
system is evaluated for active vibration control.
Abstract: This paper present a MATLAB-SIMULINK model of a single phase 2.5 KVA, 240V RMS controlled PV VSI (Photovoltaic Voltage Source Inverter) inverter using IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor). The behavior of output voltage, output current, and the total harmonic distortion (THD), with the variation in input dc blocking capacitor (Cdc), for linear and non-linear load has been analyzed. The values of Cdc as suggested by the other authors in their papers are not clearly defined and it poses difficulty in selecting the proper value. As the dc power stored in Cdc, (generally placed parallel with battery) is used as input to the VSI inverter. The simulation results shows the variation in the output voltage and current with different values of Cdc for linear and non-linear load connected at the output side of PV VSI inverter and suggest the selection of suitable value of Cdc.
Abstract: A numerical simulation of micro Poiseuille flow has
performed for rarefied and compressible flow at slip flow regimes.
The wall roughness is simulated in two cases with triangular
microelements and random micro peaks distributed on wall surfaces
to study the effects of roughness shape and distribution on flow field.
Two values of Mach and Knudsen numbers have used to investigate
the effects of rarefaction as well as compressibility. The numerical
results have also checked with available theoretical and experimental
relations and good agreements has achieved. High influence of
roughness shape can be seen for both compressible and
incompressible rarefied flows. In addition it is found that rarefaction
has more significant effect on flow field in microchannels with
higher relative roughness. It is also found that compressibility has
more significant effects on Poiseuille number when relative
roughness increases.
Abstract: The integrity and issues related to electrostatic performance associated with scaling Si MOSFET bulk sub 10nm channel length promotes research in new device architectures such as SOI, double gate and GAA MOSFET. In this paper, we present some novel characteristic of horizontal rectangular gate\gate all around MOSFETs with dual metal of gate we obtained using SILVACO TCAD tools. We will also exhibit some simulation results we obtained relating to the influence of some parameters variation on our structure, that having a direct impact on their threshold voltage and drain current. In addition, our TFET showed reasonable ION/IOFF ratio of (104) and low drain induced barrier lowering (DIBL) of 39 mV/V.
Abstract: In this paper, fluid flow patterns of steady incompressible flow inside shear driven cavity are studied. The numerical simulations are conducted by using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for different Reynolds numbers. In order to simulate the flow, derivation of macroscopic hydrodynamics equations from the continuous Boltzmann equation need to be performed. Then, the numerical results of shear-driven flow inside square and triangular cavity are compared with results found in literature review. Present study found that flow patterns are affected by the geometry of the cavity and the Reynolds numbers used.
Abstract: This paper presents a dynamic adaptation scheme for
the frequency of inter-deme migration in distributed genetic algorithms
(GA), and its VLSI hardware design. Distributed GA,
or multi-deme-based GA, uses multiple populations which evolve
concurrently. The purpose of dynamic adaptation is to improve
convergence performance so as to obtain better solutions. Through
simulation experiments, we proved that our scheme achieves better
performance than fixed frequency migration schemes.
Abstract: Target tracking and localization are important applications
in wireless sensor networks. In these applications, sensor nodes
collectively monitor and track the movement of a target. They have
limited energy supplied by batteries, so energy efficiency is essential
for sensor networks. Most existing target tracking protocols need to
wake up sensors periodically to perform tracking. Some unnecessary
energy waste is thus introduced. In this paper, an energy efficient
protocol for target localization is proposed. In order to preserve
energy, the protocol fixes the number of sensors for target tracking,
but it retains the quality of target localization in an acceptable
level. By selecting a set of sensors for target localization, the other
sensors can sleep rather than periodically wake up to track the target.
Simulation results show that the proposed protocol saves a significant
amount of energy and also prolongs the network lifetime.
Abstract: This paper presents the use of anti-sway angle control
approaches for a two-dimensional gantry crane with disturbances
effect in the dynamic system. Delayed feedback signal (DFS) and
proportional-derivative (PD)-type fuzzy logic controller are the
techniques used in this investigation to actively control the sway
angle of the rope of gantry crane system. A nonlinear overhead
gantry crane system is considered and the dynamic model of the
system is derived using the Euler-Lagrange formulation. A complete
analysis of simulation results for each technique is presented in time
domain and frequency domain respectively. Performances of both
controllers are examined in terms of sway angle suppression and
disturbances cancellation. Finally, a comparative assessment of the
impact of each controller on the system performance is presented and
discussed.
Abstract: In the past years, the world has witnessed significant work in the field of Manufacturing. Special efforts have been made in the implementation of new technologies, management and control systems, among many others which have all evolved the field. Closely following all this, due to the scope of new projects and the need of turning the existing flexible ideas into more autonomous and intelligent ones, i.e.: moving toward a more intelligent manufacturing, the present paper emerges with the main aim of contributing to the analysis and a few customization issues of a new iCIM 3000 system at the IPSAM. In this process, special emphasis in made on the material flow problem. For this, besides offering a description and analysis of the system and its main parts, also some tips on how to define other possible alternative material flow scenarios and a partial analysis of the combinatorial nature of the problem are offered as well. All this is done with the intentions of relating it with the use of simulation tools, for which these have been briefly addressed with a special focus on the Witness simulation package. For a better comprehension, the previous elements are supported by a few figures and expressions which would help obtaining necessary data. Such data and others will be used in the future, when simulating the scenarios in the search of the best material flow configurations.

Abstract: Supersonic hydrogen-air cylindrical mixing layer is
numerically analyzed to investigate the effect of inlet swirl on
ignition time delay in scramjets. Combustion is treated using detail
chemical kinetics. One-equation turbulence model of Spalart and
Allmaras is chosen to study the problem and advection upstream
splitting method is used as computational scheme. The results show
that swirling both fuel and oxidizer streams may drastically decrease
the ignition distance in supersonic combustion, unlike using the swirl
just in fuel stream which has no helpful effect.
Abstract: The paper presents a simple and an accurate formula
that has been developed for the conduction angle (δ) of a single
phase half-wave or full-wave controlled rectifier with RL load. This
formula can be also used for calculating the conduction angle (δ) in
case of A.C. voltage regulator with inductive load under
discontinuous current mode. The simulation results shows that the
conduction angle calculated from the developed formula agree very
well with that obtained from the exact solution arrived from the
iterative method. Applying the developed formula can reduce the
computational time and reduce the time for manual classroom
calculation. In addition, the proposed formula is attractive for real
time implementations.
Abstract: The main aim of this research is to develop a methodology to encourage people's awareness, knowledge and understanding on the participation of flood management for cultural heritage, as the cooperation and interaction among government section, private section, and public section through role-play gaming simulation theory. The format of this research is to develop Role-play gaming simulation from existing documents, game or role-playing from several sources and existing data of the research site. We found that role-play gaming simulation can be implemented to help improving the understanding of the existing problem and the impact of the flood on cultural heritage, and the role-play game can be developed into the tool to improve people's knowledge, understanding and awareness about people's participation for flood management on cultural heritage, moreover the cooperation among the government, private section and public section will be improved through the theory of role-play gaming simulation.
Abstract: To investigate the energy performance of solar shading devices, this paper carried out a survey on the current status of solar shading utilization in buildings in Ningbo and performed building simulations to evaluate the energy savings potential by adopting different solar shading devices. Results show that solar shading utilization in this area is not popular and effective, and should be considered firstly in the design stage since the potential for energy savings is up to 6.8% for residential buildings and 9.4% for commercial buildings.
Abstract: Due to the stringent legislation for emission of diesel
engines and also increasing demand on fuel consumption, the
importance of detailed 3D simulation of fuel injection, mixing and
combustion have been increased in the recent years. In the present
work, FIRE code has been used to study the detailed modeling of
spray and mixture formation in a Caterpillar heavy-duty diesel
engine. The paper provides an overview of the submodels
implemented, which account for liquid spray atomization, droplet
secondary break-up, droplet collision, impingement, turbulent
dispersion and evaporation. The simulation was performed from
intake valve closing (IVC) to exhaust valve opening (EVO). The
predicted in-cylinder pressure is validated by comparing with
existing experimental data. A good agreement between the predicted
and experimental values ensures the accuracy of the numerical
predictions collected with the present work. Predictions of engine
emissions were also performed and a good quantitative agreement
between measured and predicted NOx and soot emission data were
obtained with the use of the present Zeldowich mechanism and
Hiroyasu model. In addition, the results reported in this paper
illustrate that the numerical simulation can be one of the most
powerful and beneficial tools for the internal combustion engine
design, optimization and performance analysis.
Abstract: Modeling of the dynamic behavior and motion are
renewed interest in the improved tractive performance of an
intelligent air-cushion tracked vehicle (IACTV). This paper presents
a new dynamical model for the forces on the developed small scale
intelligent air-cushion tracked vehicle moving over swamp peat. The
air cushion system partially supports the 25 % of vehicle total weight
in order to make the vehicle ground contact pressure 7 kN/m2. As the
air-cushion support system can adjust automatically on the terrain, so
the vehicle can move over the terrain without any risks. The springdamper
system is used with the vehicle body to control the aircushion
support system on any undulating terrain by making the
system sinusoidal form. Experiments have been carried out to
investigate the relationships among tractive efficiency, slippage,
traction coefficient, load distribution ratio, tractive effort, motion
resistance and power consumption in given terrain conditions.
Experiment and simulation results show that air-cushion system
improves the vehicle performance by keeping traction coefficient of
71% and tractive efficiency of 62% and the developed model can
meet the demand of transport efficiency with the optimal power
consumption.
Abstract: In this paper a stochastic scenario-based model predictive control applied to molten salt storage systems in concentrated solar tower power plant is presented. The main goal of this study is to build up a tool to analyze current and expected future resources for evaluating the weekly power to be advertised on electricity secondary market. This tool will allow plant operator to maximize profits while hedging the impact on the system of stochastic variables such as resources or sunlight shortage.
Solving the problem first requires a mixed logic dynamic modeling of the plant. The two stochastic variables, respectively the sunlight incoming energy and electricity demands from secondary market, are modeled by least square regression. Robustness is achieved by drawing a certain number of random variables realizations and applying the most restrictive one to the system. This scenario approach control technique provides the plant operator a confidence interval containing a given percentage of possible stochastic variable realizations in such a way that robust control is always achieved within its bounds. The results obtained from many trajectory simulations show the existence of a ‘’reliable’’ interval, which experimentally confirms the algorithm robustness.
Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of the partial state
feedback stabilization of a class of nonlinear systems. In order to
stabilization this class systems, the especial place of this paper is
to reverse designing the state feedback control law from the method
of judging system stability with the center manifold theory. First of
all, the center manifold theory is applied to discuss the stabilization
sufficient condition and design the stabilizing state control laws for a
class of nonlinear. Secondly, the problem of partial stabilization for a
class of plane nonlinear system is discuss using the lyapunov second
method and the center manifold theory. Thirdly, we investigate specially
the problem of the stabilization for a class of homogenous plane
nonlinear systems, a class of nonlinear with dual-zero eigenvalues and
a class of nonlinear with zero-center using the method of lyapunov
function with homogenous derivative, specifically. At the end of this
paper, some examples and simulation results are given show that the
approach of this paper to this class of nonlinear system is effective
and convenient.
