Abstract: The mechanical properties including flexural and
tensile of neat vinyl ester and polymer based on layered silicate
nanocomposite materials are discussed. The addition of layered
silicate into the polymer matrix increased the tensile and flexural
modulus up to 1 wt.% clay loading. The incorporation of more clay
resulted in decreasing the mechanical properties which was traced to
the existence of aggregation layers. Likewise, up to 1 wt.% clay
loading, the thermal behaviour showed significant improvements and
at higher clay loading the thermal pattern was reduced. The
aggregation layers imparted a negative impact on the overall
mechanical and thermal properties. Wide Angle X-ray Diffraction,
Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron
Microscopy were utilised in order to characterise the interlamellar
structure of nanocomposites.
Abstract: A numerical analysis of wave and hydrodynamic models
is used to investigate the influence of WAve and Storm Surge
(WASS) in the regional and coastal zones. The numerical analyzed
system consists of the WAve Model Cycle 4 (WAMC4) and the
Princeton Ocean Model (POM) which used to solve the energy
balance and primitive equations respectively. The results of both
models presented the incorporated surface wave in the regional
zone affected the coastal storm surge zone. Specifically, the results
indicated that the WASS generally under the approximation is not
only the peak surge but also the coastal water level drop which
can also cause substantial impact on the coastal environment. The
wave–induced surface stress affected the storm surge can significantly
improve storm surge prediction. Finally, the calibration of wave
module according to the minimum error of the significant wave height
(Hs) is not necessarily result in the optimum wave module in the
WASS analyzed system for the WASS prediction.
Abstract: Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a recent class of statistical classification and regression techniques playing an increasing role in applications to detection problems in various engineering problems, notably in statistical signal processing, pattern recognition, image analysis, and communication systems. In this paper, SVM is applied to an infrared (IR) binary communication system with different types of channel models including Ricean multipath fading and partially developed scattering channel with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) at the receiver. The structure and performance of SVM in terms of the bit error rate (BER) metric is derived and simulated for these channel stochastic models and the computational complexity of the implementation, in terms of average computational time per bit, is also presented. The performance of SVM is then compared to classical binary signal maximum likelihood detection using a matched filter driven by On-Off keying (OOK) modulation. We found that the performance of SVM is superior to that of the traditional optimal detection schemes used in statistical communication, especially for very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ranges. For large SNR, the performance of the SVM is similar to that of the classical detectors. The implication of these results is that SVM can prove very beneficial to IR communication systems that notoriously suffer from low SNR at the cost of increased computational complexity.
Abstract: Residues are produced in all stages of human activities
in terms of composition and volume which vary according to
consumption practices and to production methods. Forms of
significant harm to the environment are associated to volume of
generated material as well as to improper disposal of solid wastes,
whose negative effects are noticed more frequently in the long term.
The solution to this problem constitutes a challenge to the
government, industry and society, because they involve economic,
social, environmental and, especially, awareness of the population in
general. The main concerns are focused on the impact it can have on
human health and on the environment (soil, water, air and sights).
The hazardous waste produced mainly by industry, are particularly
worrisome because, when improperly managed, they become a
serious threat to the environment. In view of this issue, this study
aimed to evaluate the management system of solid waste of a coprocessing
industrial waste company, to propose improvements to the
rejects generation management in a specific step of the Blending
production process.

Abstract: In this paper, the noise maps for the area encircled by
the Second Ring Road in Riyadh city are developed based on real
measured data. Sound level meters, GPS receivers to determine
measurement position, a database program to manage the measured
data, and a program to develop the maps are used. A baseline noise
level has been established at each short-term site so subsequent
monitoring may be conducted to describe changes in Riyadh-s noise
environment. Short-term sites are used to show typical daytime and
nighttime noise levels at specific locations by short duration grab
sampling.
Abstract: SoftBoost is a recently presented boosting algorithm,
which trades off the size of achieved classification margin and
generalization performance. This paper presents a performance
evaluation of SoftBoost algorithm on the generic object recognition
problem. An appearance-based generic object recognition
model is used. The evaluation experiments are performed using
a difficult object recognition benchmark. An assessment with respect
to different degrees of label noise as well as a comparison to
the well known AdaBoost algorithm is performed. The obtained
results reveal that SoftBoost is encouraged to be used in cases
when the training data is known to have a high degree of noise.
Otherwise, using Adaboost can achieve better performance.
Abstract: Nowadays, people are going more and more mobile, both in terms of devices and associated applications. Moreover, services that these devices are offering are getting wider and much more complex. Even though actual handheld devices have considerable computing power, their contexts of utilization are different. These contexts are affected by the availability of connection, high latency of wireless networks, battery life, size of the screen, on-screen or hard keyboard, etc. Consequently, development of mobile applications and their associated mobile Web services, if any, should follow a concise methodology so they will provide a high Quality of Service. The aim of this paper is to highlight and discuss main issues to consider when developing mobile applications and mobile Web services and then propose a framework that leads developers through different steps and modules toward development of efficient and secure mobile applications. First, different challenges in developing such applications are elicited and deeply discussed. Second, a development framework is presented with different modules addressing each of these challenges. Third, the paper presents an example of a mobile application, Eivom Cinema Guide, which benefits from following our development framework.
Abstract: This paper presents a formant-tracking linear prediction
(FTLP) model for speech processing in noise. The main focus of this
work is the detection of formant trajectory based on Hidden Markov
Models (HMM), for improved formant estimation in noise. The
approach proposed in this paper provides a systematic framework for
modelling and utilization of a time- sequence of peaks which satisfies
continuity constraints on parameter; the within peaks are modelled
by the LP parameters. The formant tracking LP model estimation
is composed of three stages: (1) a pre-cleaning multi-band spectral
subtraction stage to reduce the effect of residue noise on formants
(2) estimation stage where an initial estimate of the LP model of
speech for each frame is obtained (3) a formant classification using
probability models of formants and Viterbi-decoders. The evaluation
results for the estimation of the formant tracking LP model tested
in Gaussian white noise background, demonstrate that the proposed
combination of the initial noise reduction stage with formant tracking
and LPC variable order analysis, results in a significant reduction in
errors and distortions. The performance was evaluated with noisy
natual vowels extracted from international french and English vocabulary
speech signals at SNR value of 10dB. In each case, the
estimated formants are compared to reference formants.
Abstract: This paper investigates the issue of building decision
trees from data with imprecise class values where imprecision is
encoded in the form of possibility distributions. The Information
Affinity similarity measure is introduced into the well-known gain
ratio criterion in order to assess the homogeneity of a set of
possibility distributions representing instances-s classes belonging to
a given training partition. For the experimental study, we proposed an
information affinity based performance criterion which we have used
in order to show the performance of the approach on well-known
benchmarks.
Abstract: Plastic waste is a big issue in Thailand, but the amount of recycled plastic in Thailand is still low due to the high investment and operating cost. Hence, the rest of plastic waste are burnt to destroy or sent to the landfills. In order to be financial viable, an effective reverse logistics infrastructure is required to support the product recovery activities. However, there is a conflict between reducing the cost and raising environmental protection level. The purpose of this study is to build a goal programming (GP) so that it can be used to help analyze the proper planning of the Thailand-s plastic recycling system that involves multiple objectives. This study considers three objectives; reducing total cost, increasing the amount of plastic recovery, and raising the desired plastic materials in recycling process. The results from two priority structures show that it is necessary to raise the total cost budget in order to achieve targets on amount of recycled plastic and desired plastic materials.
Abstract: This work presents a matched field processing (MFP)
algorithm based on Dopplerlet transform for estimating the motion
parameters of a sound source moving along a straight line and with a
constant speed by using a piecewise strategy, which can significantly
reduce the computational burden. Monte Carlo simulation results and
an experimental result are presented to verify the effectiveness of the
algorithm advocated.
Abstract: In this paper we consider the issue of distributed adaptive estimation over sensor networks. To deal with more realistic scenario, different variance for observation noise is assumed for sensors in the network. To solve the problem of different variance of observation noise, the proposed method is divided into two phases: I) Estimating each sensor-s observation noise variance and II) using the estimated variances to obtain the desired parameter. Our proposed algorithm is based on a diffusion least mean square (LMS) implementation with linear combiner model. In the proposed algorithm, the step-size parameter the coefficients of linear combiner are adjusted according to estimated observation noise variances. As the simulation results show, the proposed algorithm considerably improves the diffusion LMS algorithm given in literature.
Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the incidence
of pathogenic bacteria: Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia coli O157
and Staphylococcus aureus in cakes and tarts collected from thirtyfive
confectionery producing and selling premises located within
Tripoli city, Libya. The results revealed an incidence of S. aureus
with 94.4 and 48.0 %, E. coli O157 with 14.7 and 4.0 % and Salmonella
sp. with 5.9 and 8.0 % in cakes and tarts samples respectively;
while Shigella was not detected in all samples. In order to determine
the source of these pathogenic bacteria, cotton swabs were taken
from the hands of workers on the production line, the surfaces of
preparation tables and cream whipping instruments. The results
showed that the cotton swabs obtained from the hands of workers
contained S. aureus and Salmonella sp. with an incidence of 42.9 and
2.9 %, the cotton swabs obtained from the surfaces of preparation
tables 22.9 and 2.9 % and the cotton swabs obtained from the cream
whipping instruments 14.3 and 0.0 % respectively; while E. coli
O157 and Shigella sp. were not detected in all swabs. Additionally,
other bacteria were isolated from the hands of workers and the Surfaces
of producing equipments included: Aeromonas sp., Pseudomonas
sp., E. coli, Klebsiella sp., Enterobacter sp., Citrobacter sp.,
Proteus sp., Serratia sp. and Acinetobacter sp. These results indicate
that some of the cakes and tarts might pose threat to consumer's
health. Meanwhile, occurrences of pathogenic bacteria on the hands
of those who are working in production line and the surfaces of
equipments reflect poor hygienic practices at most confectionery
premises examined in this study. Thus, firm and continuous surveillance
of these premises is needed to insure the consumer's health and
safety.
Abstract: In this paper we analyze the core issues affecting
software architecture in enterprise projects where a large number of
people at different backgrounds are involved and complex business,
management and technical problems exist. We first give general
features of typical enterprise projects and then present foundations of
software architectures. The detailed analysis of core issues affecting
software architecture in software development phases is given. We
focus on three main areas in each development phase: people,
process, and management related issues, structural (product) issues,
and technology related issues. After we point out core issues and
problems in these main areas, we give recommendations for
designing good architecture. We observed these core issues and the
importance of following the best software development practices and
also developed some novel practices in many big enterprise
commercial and military projects in about 10 years of experience.
Abstract: In working mode some unexpected changes could
be arise in inner structure of electromagnetic device. They
influence modification in electromagnetic field propagation map.
The field values at an observed boundary are also changed. The
development of the process has to be watched because the arising
structural changes would provoke the device to be gone out later.
The probabilistic assessment of the state is possible to be made.
The numerical assessment points if the resulting changes have
only accidental character or they are due to the essential inner
structural disturbances.
The presented application example is referring to the 200MW
turbine-generator. A part of the stator core end teeth zone is
simulated broken. Quasi three-dimensional electromagnetic and
temperature field are solved applying FEM. The stator core state
diagnosis is proposed to be solved as an identification problem on
the basis of a statistical criterion.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to compare the effect of the ultrasonic pre treatment on the removal of heavy metals (Iron, Zinc and Copper) from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) by Denver Cell flotation. Synthetic AMD and individual metal solutions are used in the initial experiments to optimise the process conditions for real AMD. Three different process methods, ultrasound treatment followed by Denver flotation cell, Denver flotation cell alone and ultrasonic treatments run simultaneously with the Denver flotation cell were tested for every sample. Precipitation of the metal solutions by using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and application of the optimum frother dosage followed by flotation significantly reduced the metal content of the AMD.
Abstract: The paper considers a single-server queue with fixedsize
batch Poisson arrivals and exponential service times, a model
that is useful for a buffer that accepts messages arriving as fixed size
batches of packets and releases them one packet at time. Transient
performance measures for queues have long been recognized as
being complementary to the steady-state analysis. The focus of the
paper is on the use of the functions that arise in the analysis of the
transient behaviour of the queuing system. The paper exploits
practical modelling to obtain a solution to the integral equation
encountered in the analysis. Results obtained indicate that under
heavy load conditions, there is significant disparity in the statistics
between the transient and steady state values.
Abstract: The segmentation of endovascular tools in fluoroscopy images can be accurately performed automatically or by minimum user intervention, using known modern techniques. It has been proven in literature, but no clinical implementation exists so far because the computational time requirements of such technology have not yet been met. A classical segmentation scheme is composed of edge enhancement filtering, line detection, and segmentation. A new method is presented that consists of a vector that propagates in the image to track an edge as it advances. The filtering is performed progressively in the projected path of the vector, whose orientation allows for oriented edge detection, and a minimal image area is globally filtered. Such an algorithm is rapidly computed and can be implemented in real-time applications. It was tested on medical fluoroscopy images from an endovascular cerebral intervention. Ex- periments showed that the 2D tracking was limited to guidewires without intersection crosspoints, while the 3D implementation was able to cope with such planar difficulties.
Abstract: Nowadays, the challenge in hydraulic turbine design is
the multi-objective design of turbine runner to reach higher
efficiency. The hydraulic performance of a turbine is strictly depends
on runner blades shape. The present paper focuses on the application
of the multi-objective optimization algorithm to the design of a small
Francis turbine runner. The optimization exercise focuses on the
efficiency improvement at the best efficiency operating point (BEP)
of the GAMM Francis turbine. A global optimization method based
on artificial neural networks (ANN) and genetic algorithms (GA)
coupled by 3D Navier-Stokes flow solver has been used to improve
the performance of an initial geometry of a Francis runner. The
results show the good ability of optimization algorithm and the final
geometry has better efficiency with initial geometry. The goal was to
optimize the geometry of the blades of GAMM turbine runner which
leads to maximum total efficiency by changing the design parameters
of camber line in at least 5 sections of a blade. The efficiency of the
optimized geometry is improved from 90.7% to 92.5%. Finally,
design parameters and the way of selection have been considered and
discussed.
