Abstract: The main aim of this study is to identify the most
influential variables that cause defects on the items produced by a
casting company located in Turkey. To this end, one of the items
produced by the company with high defective percentage rates is
selected. Two approaches-the regression analysis and decision treesare
used to model the relationship between process parameters and
defect types. Although logistic regression models failed, decision tree
model gives meaningful results. Based on these results, it can be
claimed that the decision tree approach is a promising technique for
determining the most important process variables.
Abstract: Sleep stage scoring is the process of classifying the
stage of the sleep in which the subject is in. Sleep is classified into
two states based on the constellation of physiological parameters.
The two states are the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and the
rapid eye movement (REM). The NREM sleep is also classified into
four stages (1-4). These states and the state wakefulness are
distinguished from each other based on the brain activity. In this
work, a classification method for automated sleep stage scoring
based on a single EEG recording using wavelet packet decomposition
was implemented. Thirty two ploysomnographic recording from the
MIT-BIH database were used for training and validation of the
proposed method. A single EEG recording was extracted and
smoothed using Savitzky-Golay filter. Wavelet packets
decomposition up to the fourth level based on 20th order Daubechies
filter was used to extract features from the EEG signal. A features
vector of 54 features was formed. It was reduced to a size of 25 using
the gain ratio method and fed into a classifier of regression trees. The
regression trees were trained using 67% of the records available. The
records for training were selected based on cross validation of the
records. The remaining of the records was used for testing the
classifier. The overall correct rate of the proposed method was found
to be around 75%, which is acceptable compared to the techniques in
the literature.
Abstract: The next stage of the home networking environment is
supposed to be ubiquitous, where each piece of material is equipped
with an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag. To fully support
the ubiquitous environment, home networking middleware should be
able to recommend home services based on a user-s interests and
efficiently manage information on service usage profiles for the users.
Therefore, USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technology, which
recognizes and manages a appliance-s state-information (location,
capabilities, and so on) by connecting RFID tags is considered. The
Intelligent Multi-Agent Middleware (IMAM) architecture was
proposed to intelligently manage the mobile RFID-based home
networking and to automatically supply information about home
services that match a user-s interests. Evaluation results for
personalization services for IMAM using Bayesian-Net and Decision
Trees are presented.
Abstract: In a lowland dipterocarp forest, we assessed the impact of canopy openness (CO) and the resultant changes under different logging systems using hemispherical photography. CO was assessed in a primary forest and two forests logged selectively using reduced impact logging. At one site, 3-m-wide strip cutting was conducted for line planting. From the comparison of CO among the three sites, we found significant changes caused by logging. However, no significant difference was observed between the two logged sites. Strip cutting treatment did not affect CO. One year after, significant canopy closure occurred in both of the logged sites. Canopy closure was significant regardless of the disturbance element, logging gap, skid trail, or strip cutting line. Significant establishment of seedlings within a year was observed in the strip cutting line. Seedling establishment seemed to contribute to rapid canopy closure and prospected to affect to the survival and growth of planted trees.
Abstract: The study on the tree growth for four species groups of commercial timber in Koh Kong province, Cambodia-s tropical rainforest is described. The simulation for these four groups had been successfully developed in the 5-year interval through year-60. Data were obtained from twenty permanent sample plots in the duration of thirteen years. The aim for this study was to develop stand table simulation system of tree growth by the species group. There were five steps involved in the development of the tree growth simulation: aggregate the tree species into meaningful groups by using cluster analysis; allocate the trees in the diameter classes by the species group; observe the diameter movement of the species group. The diameter growth rate, mortality rate and recruitment rate were calculated by using some mathematical formula. Simulation equation had been created by combining those parameters. Result showed the dissimilarity of the diameter growth among species groups.
Abstract: Avoiding learning failures in mathematics e-learning environments caused by emotional problems in students with autism has become an important topic for combining of special education with information and communications technology. This study presents an adaptive emotional adjustment model in mathematics e-learning for students with autism, emphasizing the lack of emotional perception in mathematics e-learning systems. In addition, an emotion classification for students with autism was developed by inducing emotions in mathematical learning environments to record changes in the physiological signals and facial expressions of students. Using these methods, 58 emotional features were obtained. These features were then processed using one-way ANOVA and information gain (IG). After reducing the feature dimension, methods of support vector machines (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and classification and regression trees (CART) were used to classify four emotional categories: baseline, happy, angry, and anxious. After testing and comparisons, in a situation without feature selection, the accuracy rate of the SVM classification can reach as high as 79.3-%. After using IG to reduce the feature dimension, with only 28 features remaining, SVM still has a classification accuracy of 78.2-%. The results of this research could enhance the effectiveness of eLearning in special education.
Abstract: The objective of this research seeks to transmit a distance training model to the community in the upper northeastern region. The group sampling consists of 60 community leaders in the municipality of sub-district Kumphawapi, Kumphawapi Disrict, Udonthani Province. The research tools rely on the following instruments, they are : 1) the achievement test of community leaders- training and 2) the satisfaction questionnaires of community leaders. The statistics used in data analysis takes the statistical mean, percentage, standard deviation, and statistical T-test. The resulted findings reveal : 1) the efficiency of the distance training developed by the researcher for the community leaders joining in the training received the average score between in-training and post-training period higher than the setup criterion, 2) the two groups of participants in the training achieved higher knowledge than their pre-training state, 3) the comparison of the achievements between the two group presented no different results, 4) the community leaders obtained the high-to-highest satisfaction.
Abstract: In this paper, the use of beam search and look-ahead strategies for solving the strip packing problem (SPP) is investigated. Given a strip of fixed width W, unlimited length L, and a set of n circular pieces of known radii, the objective is to determine the minimum length of the initial strip that packs all the pieces. An augmented algorithm which combines beam search and a look-ahead strategies is proposed. The look-ahead is used in order to evaluate the nodes at each level of the tree search. The best nodes are then retained for branching. The computational investigation showed that the proposed augmented algorithm is able to improve the best known solutions of the literature on most instances used.
Abstract: In this paper we present a novel approach for wavelet compression of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals based on the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) coding algorithm. SPIHT algorithm has achieved prominent success in image compression. Here we use a modified version of SPIHT for one dimensional signals. We applied wavelet transform with SPIHT coding algorithm on different records of MIT-BIH database. The results show the high efficiency of this method in ECG compression.
Abstract: As a structure for processing string problem, suffix
array is certainly widely-known and extensively-studied. But if the
string access pattern follows the “90/10" rule, suffix array can not take
advantage of the fact that we often find something that we have just
found. Although the splay tree is an efficient data structure for small
documents when the access pattern follows the “90/10" rule, it
requires many structures and an excessive amount of pointer
manipulations for efficiently processing and searching large
documents. In this paper, we propose a new and conceptually powerful
data structure, called splay suffix arrays (SSA), for string search. This
data structure combines the features of splay tree and suffix arrays into
a new approach which is suitable to implementation on both
conventional and clustered computers.
Abstract: Cutting tools are widely used in manufacturing processes and drilling is the most commonly used machining process. Although drill-bits used in drilling may not be expensive, their breakage can cause damage to expensive work piece being drilled and at the same time has major impact on productivity. Predicting drill-bit breakage, therefore, is important in reducing cost and improving productivity. This study uses twenty features extracted from two degradation signals viz., thrust force and torque. The methodology used involves developing and comparing decision tree, random forest, and multinomial logistic regression models for classifying and predicting drill-bit breakage using degradation signals.
Abstract: In this paper we have proposed three and two
stage still gray scale image compressor based on BTC. In our
schemes, we have employed a combination of four techniques
to reduce the bit rate. They are quad tree segmentation, bit
plane omission, bit plane coding using 32 visual patterns and
interpolative bit plane coding. The experimental results show
that the proposed schemes achieve an average bit rate of 0.46
bits per pixel (bpp) for standard gray scale images with an
average PSNR value of 30.25, which is better than the results
from the exiting similar methods based on BTC.
Abstract: Software metric is a measure of some property of a
piece of software or its specification. The aim of this paper is to
present an application of evolutionary decision trees in software
engineering in order to classify the software modules that have or
have not one or more reported defects. For this some metrics are used
for detecting the class of modules with defects or without defects.
Abstract: Measurements of capacitance C and dissipation
factor tand of the stator insulation system provide useful information
about internal defects within the insulation. The index k is defined as
the proportionality constant between the changes at high voltage of
capacitance DC and of the dissipation factor Dtand . DC and
Dtand values were highly correlated when small flat defects were
within the insulation and that correlation was lost in the presence of
large narrow defects like electrical treeing. The discrimination
between small and large defects is made resorting to partial discharge
PD phase angle analysis. For the validation of the results, C and tand
measurements were carried out in a 15MVA 4160V steam turbine
turbogenerator placed in a sugar mill. In addition, laboratory test
results obtained by other authors were analyzed jointly. In such
laboratory tests, model coil bars subjected to thermal cycling resulted
highly degraded and DC and Dtand values were not correlated. Thus,
the index k could not be calculated.
Abstract: Finding the shortest path between two positions is a
fundamental problem in transportation, routing, and communications
applications. In robot motion planning, the robot should pass around
the obstacles touching none of them, i.e. the goal is to find a
collision-free path from a starting to a target position. This task has
many specific formulations depending on the shape of obstacles,
allowable directions of movements, knowledge of the scene, etc.
Research of path planning has yielded many fundamentally different
approaches to its solution, mainly based on various decomposition
and roadmap methods. In this paper, we show a possible use of
visibility graphs in point-to-point motion planning in the Euclidean
plane and an alternative approach using Voronoi diagrams that
decreases the probability of collisions with obstacles. The second
application area, investigated here, is focused on problems of finding
minimal networks connecting a set of given points in the plane using
either only straight connections between pairs of points (minimum
spanning tree) or allowing the addition of auxiliary points to the set
to obtain shorter spanning networks (minimum Steiner tree).
Abstract: A new hybrid coding method for compressing
animated polygonal meshes is presented. This paper assumes
the simplistic representation of the geometric data: a temporal
sequence of polygonal meshes for each discrete frame of the
animated sequence. The method utilizes a delta coding and an
octree-based method. In this hybrid method, both the octree
approach and the delta coding approach are applied to each
single frame in the animation sequence in parallel. The
approach that generates the smaller encoded file size is chosen
to encode the current frame. Given the same quality
requirement, the hybrid coding method can achieve much
higher compression ratio than the octree-only method or the
delta-only method. The hybrid approach can represent 3D
animated sequences with higher compression factors while
maintaining reasonable quality. It is easy to implement and have
a low cost encoding process and a fast decoding process, which
make it a better choice for real time application.
Abstract: The phylogenetic analysis using the most conservative
portions of 18S rRNA gene revealed the phylogenetic relationship
among the two populations where DNA divergence showed that the
nucleotides diversity value were -0.00838 for the Tanjung Dawai,
Kedah and -0.00708 for the Cherating, Pahang populations
respectively. The net nucleotide divergence among populations (Da)
was -0.0073 indicating a low polymorphism among the populations
studied. Total number of mutations in the Tanjung Dawai, Kedah
samples was higher than Cherating, Pahang samples, which are 73 and
59 respectively while shared mutations across the populations were 8,
and reveal the evolutionary in the genome of Malaysian T. gigas. The
tree topology of both populations inferred using Neigbour-joining
method by comparing 1791 bp of partial 18S rRNA sequence revealed
that T. gigas haplotypes were clustered into seven clades, suggesting
that they are genetically diverse among populations which derived
from a common ancestor.
Abstract: Nowadays data backup format doesn-t cease to appear raising so the anxiety on their accessibility and their perpetuity. XML is one of the most promising formats to guarantee the integrity of data. This article suggests while showing one thing man can do with XML. Indeed XML will help to create a data backup model. The main task will consist in defining an application in JAVA able to convert information of a database in XML format and restore them later.
Abstract: Due to heavy energy constraints in WSNs clustering is
an efficient way to manage the energy in sensors. There are many
methods already proposed in the area of clustering and research is
still going on to make clustering more energy efficient. In our paper
we are proposing a minimum spanning tree based clustering using
divide and conquer approach. The MST based clustering was first
proposed in 1970’s for large databases. Here we are taking divide and
conquer approach and implementing it for wireless sensor networks
with the constraints attached to the sensor networks. This Divide and
conquer approach is implemented in a way that we don’t have to
construct the whole MST before clustering but we just find the edge
which will be the part of the MST to a corresponding graph and
divide the graph in clusters there itself if that edge from the graph can
be removed judging on certain constraints and hence saving lot of
computation.
Abstract: The ARMrayan Multimedia Mobile CMS (Content
Management System) is the first mobile CMS that gives the
opportunity to users for creating multimedia J2ME mobile
applications with their desired content, design and logo; simply,
without any need for writing even a line of code. The low-level
programming and compatibility problems of the J2ME, along with
UI designing difficulties, makes it hard for most people –even
programmers- to broadcast their content to the widespread mobile
phones used by nearly all people. This system provides user-friendly,
PC-based tools for creating a tree index of pages and inserting
multiple multimedia contents (e.g. sound, video and picture) in each
page for creating a J2ME mobile application. The output is a standalone
Java mobile application that has a user interface, shows texts
and pictures and plays music and videos regardless of the type of
devices used as long as the devices support the J2ME platform.
Bitmap fonts have also been used thus Middle Eastern languages can
be easily supported on all mobile phone devices. We omitted
programming concepts for users in order to simplify multimedia
content-oriented mobile applictaion designing for use in educational,
cultural or marketing centers. Ordinary operators can now create a
variety of multimedia mobile applications such as tutorials,
catalogues, books, and guides in minutes rather than months.
Simplicity and power has been the goal of this CMS. In this paper,
we present the software engineered-designed concepts of the
ARMrayan MCMS along with the implementation challenges faces
and solutions adapted.
